This
week's highlight for me was attending The Band of Magicians
show in Takapuna, Auckland. James Gales (Australia), Ben Hanlin
(UK), Brett Loudermilk (USA) and Adam Mada (Australia) are
four young magicians who have banded together to perform and
were well received by a packed out audience and helping to
create a positive interest in our younger generation for magic
here in New Zealand. See (9) on final section of their itinerary.

Chicago
style bar magic has a new home at the Chicago Magic Lounge!
Producer
Joseph Cranford has revived the long tradition of table, bar,
and stage magic at an amazing new performance space, the Uptown
Underground theater. Housed in the basement of a historic
1920's architectural masterpiece, the room evokes the image
of a Chicago speakeasy. The Magic Lounge takes over the theater
space every Thursday night starting at 7:30pm. Featuring a
revolving roster of magicians, mentalists, and illusionists,
the stage show starts at 8pm.
Headlining
for the month of September, it's me, Jeff Bibik! Come out
and have some laughs. At 10 pm the late show is called the
Magic Lab, and it could be the country's only magic open mic!
The stage is open to anyone to perform, from pros trying out
new routines to beginners sweating out their first show. It's
a great experience, if you are in or near Chicago, you must
see this place! 4707 N Broadway, Chicago.

4. Podcasts From Texas Association Of Magicians' Convention
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star
During
this past weekend, over 400 magicians and their families enjoyed
what I believe to be in the top ten of ALL magic conventions
I have ever attended. There were so many highlights that there
is no way I can tell them all in this brief update; however,
lucky for you, I was able to provide over three hours of audio
on The Magic Word Podcast with dozens of magicians. By listening
to these daily updates, you will have fun with me and learn
some stuff along the way. You can find the three daily updates
on the website at http://TheMagicWordPodcast.com
The
new content that was posted on Thursday September 10th was
recorded while I was in Las Vegas after MAGIC Live! I was
invited to attend a get-together at the production studio
of Team Scott Land who makes and performs with marionettes.
The unexpected discussion I had at the party led into stories
about the way Las Vegas used to be nearly 50 years ago when
the Rat Pack was in town and the "mob" had $1.00
shrimp cocktails and cheap buffets. Hear some tales about
Wayne Newton to Elvis Presley and much, much more this week
on The Magic Word Podcast at: http://themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/254-tales-from-old-las-vegas
I
want to also take a moment to publicly thank a few new members
of The Friends of The Magic Word. Welcome Walter E. McGurn,
Brandon Hudgeons, D.J. DeVaney, Dan Sclare, Peder Andersson
and Tommy Ellison to the exclusive group who believe in the
podcast enough to pledge your financial support. It is because
of committed listeners like you who appreciate and believe
in the podcast that I am able to continue with this project
each week. It is because of you that I am inspired to stay
up until the wee hours of the morning during magic conventions
editing and posting daily updates so everyone can keep up
to date on what's happening and enjoy (hopefully) great content
through my audio updates. Anyway, thanks guys and I hope your
commitment will inspire others to find a few bucks to donate
to the podcast, too.

Taom
2015. A Triumph of Magic, Music, Weirdness, and Women!
The
TAOM 2015 convention is now just a vision in the rearview
mirror--- and a memory, a very pleasant memory indeed. Hats
off to Trixie Bond and everyone connected to this event all
of whom helped to make it such a success. The convention was
held right here in my hometown of Austin and although I am
rather biased, I have to say that our wonderful little city
made quite a backdrop to the event.
Rather
than write an exhaustive list of what went on, I want to just
mention a few of my personal highlights from the three and
a half day event. I want to begin by saying how much I enjoyed
my own participation, I had a blast performing and lecturing
at the convention. I especially enjoyed my Monday morning
lecture, which was amazing well and enthusiastically attended.
Thank you for inviting me to be a part of it. I got to perform
with three very talented youngsters, James Irwin, Drake Stanton
and Ava Byers --- who were quite rightly billed as Our Stars
of Tomorrow!
The
theme of the convention was Magic, Music, Weirdness and Women.
This worked for me as I love all four of these things and
the event got the mixture just right. For a music buff like
myself, the addition of music in the lounge/bar area between
shows was a lovely addition. The weirdness was pretty firmly
under control given the location, but most magic conventions
could definitely use a dash more of it in my personal opinion.
There
were two Gala shows and each was excellent. The first Gala
featured many dear friends including Peter Samelson, John
Carney and Mark Merchant. The entire show was great but as
is so often the case the rather edgy comedy of ventriloquist
Mark Merchant rather stole the show. It really helps being
the only non-magician on a bill! I know I have been the only
magician on the Gala Shows at ventriloquism convention!
The
second Gala was an all female event (OK, Steve Daley was there
in his Tiny Bubbles persona. And very funny he was!) There
was plenty of talent on the bill including Ali Shelley, Margaret
Steele, Amanda Eve, Rachael Dunn, and Jesse Patterson with
the lovely and talented Jade making a fine headliner to the
bill. Hats off to an event that really highlighted the talented
women in our business.
During
the convention Lectures and workshops were presented by Bob
Fitch, John Carney, Jay Scott Berry, Oscar Munoz, Peter Samelson
and Robert Baxt --- they were all resounding successes. Another
crowd favorite was Brian Brushwood's Scam School. There was
much to learn from this skilled and talented group of lecturers
and performers.
The
Close-Up Show was well represented by Suzanne the Magician,
Peter Samelson, Jay Scott Berry, John Carney and Robert Baxt.
All of these performers wowed the crowd with their skills
and talents. The convention also hosted an excellent close-up
contest, in addition to stage contest, which highlighted our
very own Texas talent.
An
incredibly successful addition to the convention was the chance
to catch Austin's own Ray Anderson in a specially formulated
edition of his Esther's Follies show. A trip to Austin is
not complete without catching this amazing show. After 30
years the show is a tightly run triumph of production and
performing skills. The sensational Ray Anderson along with
his wonderful assistant/partner Ellana Kelter present magic
the way you want to see it! The skill and charisma they project
make each of them a national magical treasure. If you have
never visited Esther's and caught their show you have missed
the best magic show in the country in my opinion.
Well,
I missed a few items out I am afraid-you can't pack all the
details of that much fun into a couple of pages. I heartily
congratulate everyone involved and strongly suggest if you
love good magic you register early for next year's TAOM Convention
in beautiful Corpus Christi.
You
can check out my online magic store at where there are full
details of my Ultimate Gypsy Yarn and Color Changing Silks
routines! Go to www.lewinenterprises.com for video performance
footage.

Part
of being a success at working festivals is the ability to
build relationships with the client/s and having them really
see the value that you give to them. You want to be a solutions
provider and not just an entertainer. The more problems you
can solve for them, the more your perceived value grows in
their minds.
Part
of building this relationship is having them see large crowds
at your shows and many happy and smiling patrons. They want
their festival guests to be having a great time. A large and
happy crowd reacting favorably to what you are doing gets
back to the client really fast.
So
what are ways in which to ensure large crowds at your festival
shows? Well one is simply advertising your appearance at the
festival. Many entertainers make 2 assumptions when it comes
to festival advertising and promotion. They feel like 1) it
will be done entirely by the festival itself and they will
advertise your appearance there and 2) that they are not allowed
to help advertise their appearance.
Let
me talk a bit about both if I can. The first rule of thumb
is to never assume anything when it comes to working festivals.
This simply means always ask questions and always find out
the answers to questions you have.
Sometimes
festivals will indeed promote your appearance and will do
a fine job of doing so. Some will not advertise you much at
all and others may just state that a "magician"
or a "juggler" will be appearing but not state your
stage name etc.
This
is naturally going to happen as all festivals are different
and they handle advertising and promotion different as well.
One of the best things you can do for yourself is to offer
to help make their job easier by providing them with information,
photos, bios, web art, logos and anything you feel they can
utilize. By doing so, you are showing them you are a professional,
you are helping them tremendously and you are ensuring a better
chance that you will be advertised properly.
If
you want to start to advertise yourself and your appearance
at the festival, it usually is never a problem. Just make
sure to touch base with your festival client ahead of time.
Ask them that you would like to help get the word out about
their festival and your appearance there and if that would
be ok with them.
It
is a win-win situation for them and so is usually never a
problem at all. Just always ask permission ahead of time before
you begin. In this way they know you are doing it, can assist
you with proper information and they get to see the value
you are giving to them.
One
of the best ways to advertise your appearance at the festival
is through a FREE method called online community calendars.
Many communities and municipalities have community based websites.
These websites are geared at letting people in their communities
know about important information.
As
a part of these community based websites, they usually will
have a calendar of events section. These calendars are set
up in such a way that anyone can freely post events and community
events to the calendar. It is usually done through an online
form page. Just enter in your information and click the button
and you are one.
The
beauty of this is that they are free of charge and can be
done quickly. There are a lot of them and you can find them
easily by doing Google searches for "Community Calendar
(town name)" or with a keyword such as "Calendar
of Events (township)". With a little Google searching,
you can find numerous online calendars to be able to place
your event information.
It
is a quick and easy way to get your information out there
to a vast audience who usually check the calendars for things
to do for their families.

I
have a new book out I would like you to know about all about
working the Festival market. If you would like additional
and detailed information on this topic, please see my book/eBook

8. Magic & Mystery School - October 2015 Classes
--------------------------------------------
Message by Tobias Beckwith
We
are currently gearing up for all our autumn events at the
Magic & Mystery School, and just wanted to check in and
remind you about what's coming:
Focus
on Street Magic has become one of our most fun events. Each
year it is hosted by Jeff and Marco Morris from October 9-11.
At present, I see three spots still open for that class. If
you enjoy busking on the streets, in the parks or at other
interesting outdoor venues, this is a great chance to learn
from two masters, even while you make your Las Vegas debut.
Some of our students have actually covered their costs for
the class and the trip by working the streets while they are
here!
Master
Class for Mentalism (Oct. 14-17) has already been sold out
for months. But if you want to get your name on a waiting
list, contact Abbi by calling (702) 450-0021 or emailing Spinner@McBrideMagic.com
Magic
& Meaning 2015 is next, from Oct. 21-24. We're about 85%
sold out for that, so if you're thinking of coming, but haven't
registered and sent your deposit yet, now's the time. Our
special guest is the inimitable Max Maven, and we're all looking
forward to what Max has to share with us.
Also,
please note: This will take place at Sunset Station in Henderson
(there was an error in the Museletter a few days ago--sorry
about that). We have a special deal with them for discount
rooms, but it's only good if you register before September
15. Again: Now is the time!
Here
is the info from our web site:
The
2015 Magic and Meaning Conference will be held at the Sunset
Station Hotel and Casino located at
1301
W Sunset Rd
Henderson, NV 89014
(702) 547-7715
A
discounted room rate has been secured for attendees who reserve
their room by September 15, 2015 ($39 for October 21 and 22;
$109 for October 23 and 24-plus tax). To make your reservation,
please call the Sunset Station Casino's reservation number
at (888) 786-7389, and tell them you are part of the McBride
Magic, Inc. group, attending Magic and Meaning at Sunset Station.
Please note: reservations made online will not receive the
discount.
For
additional information or questions, please contact Katherine
Rettke, the Conference's Executive Assistant, at mmconference@magicalwisdom.com
That's
it for now. We look forward to seeing you all one day soon,
in Vegas, or in your own neck of the woods (let me know if
you think you might like to bring Jeff's show and lecture
to your area)!

11. The Society Of American Magicians, Proclaimed The Week
--------------------------------------------
Message by George Schindler (US)
Magic
Week Proclaimed Oct. 25-31, 2015
David Bowers, National President of The Society of American
Magicians, proclaimed the week of October 25 to October 31,
2015 as National Magic Week throughout the United States and
Canada.
For
more than forty years the Society has recognized the anniversary
of the death of Harry Houdini with a special "week"
of events to highlight the charitable work of the Society
throughout the year. During the year the members of the Society
donate performances for senior citizens in nursing homes,
in VA hospitals, for schools and libraries, and for children
who cannot afford the luxury of live entertainment. The free
shows are part of service programs sponsored by The S.A.M.
and follow the example set by Harry Houdini, a past National
President of the Society.
"Magic
Week" is when the magicians celebrate this service. Public
magic events and exhibits will be taking place all over the
country.
Each
year governors, mayors, and other governing bodies throughout
North America are requested to issue proclamations declaring
the last week in October as National Magic Week, encouraging
magicians to participate in the activities. For more details
and a history of this event, please go to: http://magicsam.com/national-magic-week-press-page/
