Highlight this week for Michele and I was seeing Australian
Illusionist Cosentino present his Twisted Reality show.
His show flowed well with a wonderful mixture of illusions
and close-up segments and showed his maturity as a dynamic
and confident performer.
Rosemary
McCarthy, owner of International Entertainment Ltd (New

3. September Linking Ring Features Singapore Magician
--------------------------------------------
Message by Dennis Schick, US
The
cover story of the September issue of The Linking Ring is
a profile of Wee Kien Meng, of Singapore, who performs as
"Mr. Bottle" Why you ask? You'll just have to
read the profile to find out. The issue also features continuing
coverage of the I.B.M. Convention in Jacksonville in July.
Seventeen pages are devoted to reviews and photos for the
Big Three events, as well as the lectures.
There
are also reviews of the Kapital Kidvention by John Cloninger,
and the annual convention of the Fellowship of Christian
Magicians (including a brief history of the FCM) by Dennis
Schick, as well as articles about "The Magic of Winning
Kids Over," by Sammy Smith, and "Marketing Magic,"
a new series from Kent Cummins about how to make money in
magic.
Of
course there are all the regular columns (Cutting Up Jackpots,
Polishing the Rings, Experiments in Magic Theatre, The Therapy
of Magic, and The Longon Eyes), and the always-popular Trick
Section (The Card Corner, Simple Diversions, Expert at the
Tech Table, and Situationally Yours). The One-Man Parade
this month is from our cover subject, Kien, who brings us
eleven effects, with terrific illustrations by Tony Dunn.
Ring
Events brings reports of events by Ring 26 (New York City),
Ring 317 in Suffolk County, New York, and Ring 392, a brand
new Ring in Blowing Rock, North Carolina. There are twelve
new books, DVDs and tricks reviewed in the Hocus in Focus
section; and eight magicians are honored in the Broken Wand.
And
don't forget the advertisers. Their support of the magazine
helps hold down the costs to bring it to you. Please read
all of them, go to their Web pages and look around, and
when you buy something from them, say you saw their ad in
The Linking Ring.
There
are one hundred and fifty-six pages in the September issue
of The Linking Ring. Members of the International Brotherhood
of Magicians can read it online right now while they wait
for the printed copy to arrive in the mail. For more information
on the I.B.M., go to www.magician.org.

Brookledge:
L.A.'s Mysterious
Secret Showplace
by
Bernie Shine
Attorney, Correspondent, Provocateur
The
Magic Castle is a private club and the home of the Academy
of Magic Arts, created by brothers Milt Larsen and Bill
Larsen Jr. The place opened in 1963 in an old Victorian
mansion in Hollywood, California. As a young man in law
school, I was a professional magician who would often appear
in their close-up room in the early 1970s. I was introduced
to the place by Dai Vernon, the world's greatest magic mentor,
who became a friend and ultimately a client.
Bill
Larsen passed away in 1993, but brother Milt is still with
us, as is Bill's widow, Irene. Bill's daughter, Erika, is
now the President of the Academy of Magic Arts. The Larsen's
are the first family of magic, preserving both the art and
promoting the artists.
Irene resides in a Spanish-style estate in the Hancock Park
area of Los Angeles, with a magical history of its own.
In 1929 it was the home of magic manufacturer Floyd Thayer.
He named it "Brookledge," a tribute to a brook
that runs through the property. In 1933 he built a showroom,
workshop, and theatre adjacent to his home to showcase his
high quality props, and it became the Thayer Magic Studio.
It was transformed into a private gathering place for the
finest magicians from all over the world. They would often
stage shows in the theater, demonstrating their latest and
greatest effects to their peers. It was the business and
social hub for magic in 1930's Los Angeles.
In
1942, Thayer hung up his top hat and sold the property and
his business to the Larsen family. Like this author, William
Larsen, Sr. was an attorney as well as a professional magician.
His sons, Bill and Milt, grew up in Brookledge, and the
place continued to be a meeting place for conjurors and
prestidigitators-- ultimately inspiring the Larsen brothers
to create The Magic Castle®, a venue envisioned by their
father.
Brookledge stayed in the family, and became the home of
Bill and Irene Larsen and their children. Daughter Erika
grew up there, and in 2009 she came up with the idea to
return the property to what it once was. She opened the
theatre, studio, and outdoor areas as a private venue for
friends and guests for invitation-only variety arts performances
which have become known as "The Brookledge Follies."
It is indeed a magical place, with the restored theatre,
an exotic secret garden and that wonderful bridge-covered
brook running through the property. But the real magic transcends
the location and is attributable to the charm, humor, and
grace of 79 year old Irene and of her daughter, Erika, who
produces these shows, bringing a unique brand of vaudeville-inspired
talent to Brookledge every month. Erika's daughter Liberty,
is a frequent performer in the Follies and is following
in the same family tradition.
Last night I was once again their guest for a moon lit garden
reception and show, followed by an after-party, all with
an eclectic group of attendees-- an odd ball mix of magicians,
performers, celebs, and a wide array of other interesting
invitees.
This
particular show featured magician Michael Cabonaro, marionettist
Matt Scott, vocalist Ursula Knudson, and ventriloquist Jay
Johnson, with music directed by house musician Kristian
Hoffman.
Carbonaro performed a spooky Spirit Cabinet effect, his
variation of something that's been a classic since the mid-1800s.
Carbonaro was often seen as "The Magic Clerk"
on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and is the host of the
cable show The Carbonaro Effect. It was a pleasure to see
some of his presentations.
My friend Jay Johnson is one of the finest ventriloquists
in the business. He did a 20 minute closing set with his
singing vulture puppet that delighted the audience. Jay
won a well-deserved Tony Award© in 2007 for his Broadway
Show, "Jay Johnson, the Two and Only," a production
that transcends ventriloquism to be a touching and entertaining
theatrical experience. Jay is also known for his work as
the character "Chuck" on the television series
"Soap," where he was always accompanied by his
alter ego, a puppet named "Bob." Bob also sometimes
appears at Brookledge.
On
other occasions, I have seen a wide variety of avant-garde
performers, such as frequent host magician Rob Zabrecky,
Prince Poppycock, Puddles Pity Party, as well as sword swallowers,
burlesque queens, dancers, fire eaters, contortionists,
comics, and even a guy who put himself inside a giant balloon.
Often brilliant, sometimes bizarre, the venue is more Felliniesque
than Shakespearean.
"A place you can hardly believe exists. A fairy tale
come to life. Not only is it a historical landmark, it is
simply magical." -- Paul Reubens (aka: Pee-wee Herman).

6. Children's Magic: A Fun Simple Prop! - #374 - Kyle Peron

I thought I would share an interesting and simple prop I
use at my shows that is really not magical in nature at
all but serves several purposes. I was talking to a friend
about it the other day and thought I would share it with
you all.
It
is interesting to note that when doing children's magic,
it is often the journey you take people on that is often
times more fun for the audience then the main effect itself.
This tends to be the nature of kid show performances. Kids
want to have fun and the journey you take them on should
be as much fun if not more fun than the main trick itself.
With
this in mind, I love the use of funny props or comedy props
used in the course of the show that really have nothing
to do with magic but are used to make the journey and experience
a fun one for all who are watching, both kids and adults.
If we are there to entertain, then we do not always have
to spend 100% of our time entertaining with just magic alone.
There
are also times in a kid show performance where you know
people are going to do certain things. This cannot be any
truer than when performing for a birthday party. You just
know from the nature of a birthday party performance that
certain things will happen in the course of the show by
the adults or parents. These are often things you cannot
control and are not in nature wrong by any means but can
slow down the performance.
One
of these situations that happen for me all the time is when
people want to take photos during the performance. When
little Joey is up on stage, mom and dad are inclined to
want to snap photos left and right. This really does not
bother me at all because I am there to make Joey and his
parent's day the most magical possible while solving the
problems they hired me for.
I
started thinking that there must be a way in which when
this happens, I can be prepared so that I can add humor
to this moment and not cause the show to slow down the pace.
I wanted to devise a way in which the situation was prepared
for by me in some fun manner.
When parents did take photos during the show, the problem
for me became that the shots and flash would go off leading
to a kind of bad photo because the parent has no idea when
to snap a good shot. This happens simply because they do
not know the show or what I am going to do next. I tried
to figure out a fun way to give them a cue to take a good
shot but have it play for laughs and be entertaining to
the show format itself.
The solution was a simple clapper board used in movies.
I got mine at a novelty store for a few bucks. You can probably
find them most anywhere if you keep your eyes open. Now
I place my stage name on the board and my website URL. I
keep this behind my table at all times and I am ready to
go.
This can be used in several ways. If you see someone about
to take a shot, you can scream, "WAIT!!!!!" then
run back get the clapper board, pose and get the laugh and
a decent shot at the same time. The other way is if the
parent does not know when a good shot might be there for
the b-day party child. This is when you can cue them and
take out the board, pose and say, "Kodak Moment Take
One!". In both ways it gets a laugh but serves a purpose.
Now
I have created comedy in the show and the show still flows
even when a situation like this comes up. It not only helps
the parents, but it shows how much of a professional I am
that I have thought of something for the situation when
it occurs.
Also, the beauty of having your name and URL on the board
is that now every single photo that is taken is branded
with your information. You know they will show the picture
around long after you leave. This is effective marketing
done in a fun manner. Long after you are gone, the photo
on the fridge will be marketing you and anyone they show
the photo to.
It
is a fun little prop that I have had a lot of fun with and
hope you all may as well. Enjoy.

honorees this year is Psychic Sideshow (EvilDan and Colleen
the
Sideshow Queen)
Magical Guests: Geoff Williams, Lothar Malmberg, Charlie
Hayden, David
Corsaro, and Jimmy C.
From
the UK, Leslie Melville will be in attendance. To see Leslie
perform is to love him. His story telling and magical skills
blend into a presentation of sheer perfection. He can take
an ordinary effect and turn it into an entertaining show
stopper.
The
longest running bizarre magic convention has grown over
the years and expanded to include mainstream magic as well.
Come spend a weekend recharging your magical batteries by
witnessing some of the best and some of the most original
magic you'll ever see.
The
Gathering hosts a number of lectures, a works in progress
session, a
Friday night bizarre show and a Saturday night evening dinner
show.
One
of the most talked about and anticipated events of The Gathering
is the hospitality suite. Loaded with food and drink, this
space is opened after the last event of the day is over
and is open until the last soul leaves. A friendly place
where invaluable magic talk takes place as well as catching
up with old and new friends while discussing life. A great
place to hang, relax, and recharge with anyone and everyone.

12. The Magic Compass
--------------------------------------------
Message by Dal Sanders MIMC (US)
Two
months ago The Society of American Magicians quietly launched
a new service to help point magicians around the world towards
the very best online content dealing with the Art of Magic.
That service is called The Magic Compass.
Initially
The Magic Compass was conceived as a newsletter styled email
that would point readers toward magic's best viral videos,
top news stories, exclusive offers, contests, polls, tricks
and more. People can sign up for that newsletter at http://goo.gl/5LnzN9.
The S.A.M. even produced a video to explain the idea that
was voiced by Mac King. That video is at https://youtu.be/8AZOctEFnKs.
As
The S.A.M. was developing this service the need for an anchoring
website became apparent and that is why The Magic Compass
is also a website that is regularly updated with the latest
online magic information. That website can be found at http://www.magic-compass.com.
Since
being launched, The Magic Compass has already delivered
news to thousands of readers. This week alone The Compass
has directed viewers to videos and posts of magician Nathan
J. Roberts making a little girl's parents reappear after
being deployed overseas, Justin Flom's Mega-Mix, Penn &
Teller's appearance on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon
and a Young and Strange magic Prank in England.
After
quietly launching The Magic Compass, The S.A.M. is now ready
for a full roll out. This service is not just for members
of The Society of American Magicians but for anyone with
an interest in The Art of Magic.
