3. The Magic Word Podcast at MAGIC Live!
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star
This
has been an incredible week in Las Vegas at MAGIC Live!
Over 1,800 magicians from around the world converged on
the city where we had the year's best party ever. With so
many people in attendance, it was impossible to get around
to chat with everyone, but I tried. As a result, some of
the daily updates were longer than the usual one hour.
You
can watch some special videos I shot, see some photos, read
the blog on what happened and who did it, listen to the
podcasts and download the MP3 files at http://TheMagicWordPodcast.com
Just scroll down to view all four episodes from all four
days.

acting on stage when he spoke against the TV business during
this convention.

5. August Issue of Linking Ring Features Convention
--------------------------------------------
Message by Dennis Schick (USA)
It
took extra efforts by The Linking Ring staff, but the August
issue features twenty-two pages of coverage of the I.B.M.'s
87th Convention in Jacksonville, Florida, July 15-18, 2015.
In addition, the cover shows eight performers in a colorful
montage, and there are seventy-five photos enhancing the
coverage. Included in the convention reporting are lists
of all the contest winners, and the announcement of The
Linking Ring Awards.
Speaking of extra effort, the untimely death on July 27
of Lee Grabel, considered by many as the last of the Grand
Masters of Magic, happened just as the August issue was
about to go to press. We "stopped the presses,"
in the tradition of important, late-breaking news, and were
able to include an In Memoriam to him. His obituary will
be in the September issue.
Also
in the August issue are articles on how Ring 60 in Austin,
Texas uses magic to help veterans and their families heal,
how Englishman Ian Adair creates a new magic effect every
day, a One-man Parade from Adair, and all the regular columns,
departments and trick sections -- one hundred sixty-four
pages in all.
Members
of the International Brotherhood of Magicians receive the
magazine as part of their membership. For more information,

8. The Magic Compass
--------------------------------------------
Message by Dal Sanders MIMC (US)
Two
months ago The Society of American Magicians quietly launched
a new service to help point magicians around the world towards
the very best online content dealing with the Art of Magic.
That service is called The Magic Compass.
Initially
The Magic Compass was conceived as a newsletter styled email
that would point readers toward magic's best viral videos,
top news stories, exclusive offers, contests, polls, tricks
and more. People can sign up for that newsletter at http://goo.gl/5LnzN9.
The S.A.M. even produced a video to explain the idea that
was voiced by Mac King. That video is at https://youtu.be/8AZOctEFnKs.
As
The S.A.M. was developing this service the need for an anchoring
website became apparent and that is why The Magic Compass
is also a website that is regularly updated with the latest
online magic information. That website can be found at
http://www.magic-compass.com.
Since
being launched, The Magic Compass has already delivered
news to thousands of readers. This week alone The Compass
has directed viewers to videos and posts of magician Nathan
J. Roberts making a little girl's parents reappear after
being deployed overseas, Justin Flom's Mega-Mix, Penn &
Teller's appearance on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon
and a Young and Strange magic Prank in England.
After
quietly launching The Magic Compass, The S.A.M. is now ready
for a full roll out. This service is not just for members
of The Society of American Magicians but for anyone with
an interest in The Art of Magic.

9. Festivals: Terms and Conditions - #371 - Kyle Peron
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kyle Peron (US)
magic4u02@aol.com
http://www.facebook.com/perondesign
http://www.kpmagicproducts.com
I use the chairs over the carpet for many reasons.
In
this day and age, there are terms and conditions applied
almost everything. You cannot buy anything or even take
part in a raffle without some form of terms and conditions
attached to it. It gets to a point where legality starts
to bring fear to the consumer. We get to a point of being
afraid to sign anything or agree to anything out of a nervous
feeling of it coming back to harm us later on.
In
the realm of working festivals this is also clearly seen.
It is a simple matter of fact that if you work with festivals,
terms and conditions will be applied. You will be asked
to review terms and conditions and to sign and abide by
them.
This
notion of having to sign and abide by a festival's terms
and conditions often is a strong deterrent for entertainers.
They fear having to be locked in and so tend to avoid the
market all together. But one does not have to fear terms
and conditions when working festivals.
It
is a matter of understanding terms and conditions, why they
are used for festivals and how best YOU can work with it.
The first thing one should understand is what is the real
underlying meaning of the phrase "Terms and Conditions"?
If
I could boil it down to one simple word, terms and conditions
would simply mean "protection". It really is as
easy as that. Terms and conditions "protects"
the seller of said product or service from damages or legal
issues as a result of the consumer.
I
bring this up because if you know this basic principle I
just stated, it is often much easier to understand how to
not fear it and how to work with festivals so that terms
and conditions becomes a simple part of doing proper business.
One
of the biggest issues that comes up with festivals concerning
terms and conditions is the feeling of being locked in with
no control. This is not always the case and it does not
need to be.
One
of the areas you need to understand is the difference between
working a festival as a vendor vs working the festival as
a paid entertainer. Here in lies a big difference in regards
to how terms and conditions are applied.
Many
associate terms and conditions as a one way street. They
fear that the festival is imposing it on them and they have
no control over it. Well in the case of coming in as a vendor,
this may be closer to the truth. The reason is that you
must look at it as you paying the festival money to occupy
a vendor space at their event. You are paying money for
a product or service THEY are providing directly to you.
Because you are paying for the usage of their spot, then
terms and conditions must be applied to protect the festival.
You do not have much power in in regards to demanding your
own terms simply because you are the one buying something
from them.
However,
festival terms and conditions does not have to be a one
way street if you work them as a paid entertainer. As a
paid entertainer, the tables are turned a bit. The festival
is coming to YOU and paying YOU for services and products
you are supplying to them. See the difference?
Because
they are paying you for your services and product, you have
a right to be able to "protect" yourself just
as much as they do. Think about it this way. If you go in
and by a washer, don't terms and conditions protect the
seller of the washer? Of course. So you must remember that
you also are selling a product and service. Because the
festival is buying your service, you have a right to terms
and conditions applied to what you are giving to them and
you should not fear it.
When
you are hired to be a paid entertainer, you may find that
the festival has their own terms and conditions and you
have yours as well. That is fine and it is natural for this
to happen. The problem lies in that entertainers often feel
they must sign and abide by the festivals terms 100%. They
feel either the festivals or their own terms must be chosen
but not both.
Remember
that terms and conditions can and should protect both parties.
When working with a festival, it is OK if the festival sends
you their terms and conditions for you to look over and
sign. However, this does not mean a one way street.
What
I will always do is be open and honest with every festival
I work. I will talk about my own needs for the show and
my own terms that ensures a smooth show for them and protects
me from situations they may not have even considered. As
a working professional who treats his magic business as
a business, most festivals understand this.
So
what I do is to make an addendum to their terms they send
to me. If a festival has a terms and conditions form that
they send my way, I can read it over and attach an addendum
to it. The addendum simply adds on my terms that should
be followed and also mentions any changes that I feel should
be made to theirs.
In
this fashion, you are working with the festival to make
sure that both parties are protected equally and all bases
are covered. Once the terms have been adjusted, they can
easily be signed by both parties.
As
you can see, this is a fair way of working and it takes
the fear out of working with festivals. The mindset should
be that you are a business working with another business
on a joint venture/agreement. If you understand this approach,
then you can go about working with them so both parties
are satisfied and covered.
***
I
have a new book out I would like you to know about all about
working the Festival market. If you would like additional
and detailed information on this topic, please see my book/ebook
at: http://www.kpmagicproducts.com/Festival_Magic.html
As
always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your
thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or

performed in the same places and had mutual friends in Japan,

13. FCM Announces 2016 Convention Info
--------------------------------------------
Message by Dennis Schick (US)
The
Fellowship of Christian Magicians (FCM) has announced details
for its 2016 International Convention. It will move back
to July (25-29), so mark your calendars. It will still be
in Nashville, Tennessee, and on the campus of Trevecca University,
as it was this year. But next year it will be held entirely
within the spacious Trevecca Community Church on the campus.
The theme for 2016 will be: "A Year of Second Chances,"
based on the Biblical verse 2 Corinthians 5:17.
The
emphasis throughout the five days of the convention is learning,
teaching, and sharing the performing arts of magic, clowns,
ventriloquism, juggling, puppets, face painting, balloons,
and drama/story-telling/chalk art. Of course the emphasis
is on applying each of these to spreading the gospel. There
are workshops, nightly shows, hospital visits, inspirational
talks, exhibitors, and even a flea market and an auction
to sell your unwanted things and stuff.

Magicians, go to their Website, www.fcm.org
