5. The Magic Word Podcast - I.B.M. Convention Coverage
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star
Immediately
following my attendance at FISM in Rimini, Italy, and the
six days of daily updates, I flew to Jacksonville, Florida
where I attended the 87th annual I.B.M. convention. Once
again, I posted daily updates from the convention. You can
catch up on all the fun and stories and contest winners
by visiting http://TheMagicWordPodcast.com and scrolling
back through the past few blogs and podcasts to begin with
episode #238.
While
I was at FISM, I recorded an extended chat with Flip Hallema,
creator of the "Flip Stick" move. In our chat,
Flip talks about the creation of that move plus an exciting
project he's involved with regarding the anniversary of
Hieronymus Bosch's famous painting, "The Conjurer".
You can read the blog, see some photos, hear our conversation
and download the MP3 file at: http://themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/flip-hallema
If
you enjoy the podcasts and listen through iTunes, then you
can do me a big favor and it won't cost you anything. Please
visit the iTunes podcast store and leave your nice comment
along with a five star rating. This will go a long way towards
moving up this podcast in the ratings. I will sincerely
appreciate your help.

6. Calling All Australians
--------------------------------------------
Message by Nopera Whitley (New Zealand)
Calling
All Australians
If
you don't already know, the Wellington Magic Club are hosting
an International Magic Convention just across the ditch
in New Zealand's Capital.
We
have a massively talented lineup with eight world-leading
magicians headlining the event. This is going to be one
of those conventions that you don't want to miss!
There
are (cheap) direct flights to Wellington from most major
Australian cities, and it is only a 15 minute bus/taxi ride
from the airport to the convention hotel.
Eight
Lectures, two competitions, two public shows, one banquet,
and more. There are less than 20 spaces left so make sure
you don't miss out!
To
find out who the headliners are, and more details, visit
the convention website at www.wellingtonmagic.co.nz

7. Nick Lewin - Remarkable Magic #397
--------------------------------------------
Message by Nick Lewin (US)
It's
all in the mind, sometimes!
I
thought it might be an interesting topic to discuss the
huge expansion of mentalism as a commercial form in the
last few years. It has been quite a phenomenon here in the
United States and it appears that this is also a worldwide
trend. It doesn't seem so long ago that mentalism was (always
wrongly so) considered something of the unloved orphan child
of the magic world.
As
a magician some of whose favorite tricks and performers
come from the world of mentalism I am very excited by this
development. Much of my early enthusiasm for magic was generated
by my exposure to Chan Canasta, Maurice Fogel and Al Koran.
I have always proudly featured the occasional strong mental
effect in my comedy magic show and appreciate the texture
that they have added to my performance. A good mentalism
effect can be really great entertainment.
I
remember the antipathy that bordered on antagonism that
was often showered upon mentalists at the Magic Castle back
in the '70s and '80s. I was once in the old Palace showroom,
in the wine cellar, and witnessed a magician wait till Maurice
Fogel turned his back on the audience, and then mime the
actions of writing with his thumb to the crowd. I was shocked
and appalled. When I asked him after the show why he did
it, he replied, "Well, mentalists just try and fool
people." Yeah, unlike magicians!
I
can totally understand the huge growth in popularity of
mentalism in the United Kingdom and can explain it in two
words --- Darren Brown. Brown was the perfect persona, at
the perfect time to become a giant star in England. I have
been a little surprised that Darren decided not to pursue
his British success in the United States. I suspect his
approach to the art would quickly establish him in the USA
as a very big star.
The
interesting thing in America is the total lack of a major
breakout mentalist star on television in the USA. The huge
growth in mentalism here has been with corporate entertainment.
This field has become a major new market for the psychic
entertainer, some of whom are great and some who are less
than stellar. In fact there are so many new corporate mentalists
that I jokingly tell agents that I am the magician who doesn't
read minds.
The
two mentalists who have really done the most to energize
this new income/work stream in recent years are Jon Stetson
and Jay Alexander. Both of these performers deliver shows
that are high energy and just plain good entertainment.
Some recent converts to the art of presenting mentalism
get a little too hung up on being serious. This can have
a tendency to make them seem a little too slow and precious,
or dare I say it, pretentious.
I
was chatting with Jon Stetson earlier today (Since James
Brown passed on, Jon is now officially known as the hardest
working man in show business,) and as always was impressed
by his total grasp of the realities of being a performer.
Stetson made a point that I think is well worth repeating
here, "I never forget that it is a mind reading show,
and I never, ever forget to give them the show." Wise
words Mr. Stetson, very wise words.
Recently
there has been quite a wave of magicians presenting mentalism
in the cruise market and to my joy I sometimes get to work
with them onboard cruise ships. It has allowed me to see
some of the strengths and weaknesses they bring to the work
place. I recently worked with a rather highly regarded mentalist
from "down under" who performed a show that completely
underwhelmed the audience. He made a very simple error by
featuring several effects that involved giving some very
complex instructions to his onstage assistants. Sadly he
did so in such a hurried and muddled fashion that his assistants
had any no idea of what to do, or even what was going on
onstage.
Clarity
is of utmost importance when performing to an international
audience. While this performer used a lot of words (actually
way, too many) his actual meaning got lost in the shuffle.
Just like comedy magicians, it is an easy way for mentalists
to improve their shows by physically writing down their
scripts and then taking the time to edit out any extra words
that do nothing to strengthen or add to their performance.
With very few exceptions saying something in ten words is
a much better performing tactic than using twenty. Any hint
of being verbose doesn't add credibility to a performance;
it just slows down the proceedings and frequently smacks
of self-importance.
I
certainly look forward to seeing more mentalism performed
for audiences, however it might be a good thing for some
of the "newbies" to check out the two performers
I referenced above. They would also do well to study other
masters of the genre such as Max Maven and Ross Johnson.
There are many subtleties they could absorb to help them
on their journey.

details of my (almost sold out) Gypsy Yarn routine! Go to

When I wake up in the morning, the world is silent. Deathly
silent. No noises, no sounds, nothing. As a deaf person,
I cannot wear my hearing aids when I sleep. So every evening
the world sort of "shuts down."
Some say that they understand silence. That they can experience
quiet and they know what it is and feels like. In reality,
unless you are deaf or hard-of-hearing, you never truly
know what silence really is.
To someone like myself, silence, takes on a totally different
meaning. A hearing person, even in a silent or quiet time,
is still hearing sounds around them and processing them.
They dub this silence and that is fine.
To a deaf person, silence is exactly that. Silent. There
are no sounds. There are no noises. The simplest things
we do not hear at all. The world becomes totally still.
Every morning, I get to place my hearing aids back in. As
soon as I do, I have to learn how to hear all over again.
My brain and body have to adjust to what it deems as new.
It has to adapt.
This morning, I sat on the deck as my body and mind adapted
to the sound. It always is such a surreal experience. The
world literally and slowly opens up and awakens to me.
It starts with hearing the birds sing, kids playing ball,
people cooking on the grill and even the sound of wind blowing
through the trees. It awakens and it becomes alive once
again.
So many think nothing of this. Nothing at all. That is because
to them, this happens all the time. There is no change.
Because of that, we seem to take those simply sounds for
granted.
To me, those sounds... every last one of them is never ever
boring. It is never dull. It is never taken for granted.
Too many, those sounds are no big deal. To me, those sounds
are an orchestra and a symphony. They are simply BEAUTIFUL!
Losing my hearing some may say is a terrible thing. To me
it is a blessing in disguise. I learn to appreciate life
more little by little and I get to experience it every day
and for that I am forever grateful. That is the REAL magic
I get to experience every day of my life. When I do, I sit,
I am still and I SMILE!

11. The Beginning Of The Multiplying Bottles
--------------------------------------------
Message by Bev Bergeron (US)
This
is from a manuscript that I wrote about the Multiplying
10 years ago, plus a little added comments and sell on my
web site.
It
was 1953 and I was stationed at Sheppard Air Force Base
in Wichita Falls, Texas. I was doing very well with my magic
and comedy acts especially the pantomime Drunk Cigarette
act that I had been performing since 1946. At the suggestion
of two fellow Airmen who were also magicians, Tom Croster
and Paul Wilson, I made a trip to Antelope, Texas to meet
with a magician who my peers told me had a set of bottles
that I should put into my act. That is how I came to meet
Mr. Walter Roberts.
With
the help of Donald Bitz, an accomplished amateur magician
from Wichita Falls, Texas, we bought his magic collection,
which included three sets of the Abbott's Comedy Passé
Passé Bottles. The object of having three sets of
the Comedy Bottles was to structure them into a comedy act
where I would produce seemingly endless wine bottles from
two chrome cylinders. It was a good idea. It was the beginning
of my Bottle/Fountain Act. It was the beginning of the Multiplying
Bottles.
The
year before I had seen America's second showing of the famous
Dancing Waters at the State Fair of Texas. All I could see
was the fountains being used in a magic act. The stories
that I'd heard of Ten-Ichi's Great Water Act where fountains
of water were moved about the stage by magic, really started
to scream at me to re-create this great illusion. Luck was
with me as in the city of Wichita Falls lived a former president
of the Texas Association of Magicians, Ralph DeShong who
owned a small version of the act built for Al Wheatley (Chop
Chop) by Loyd Enochs; DeShong sold it to me. The prop was
old and unusable, but it gave me the starting point that
I needed to build my own self-contained fountain act.
The
Bottle and Water Fountain acts were married together in
1954 and has never stopped growing and being changed.
In
1960, I was asked by Joe Berg, magic dealer, to appear in
a public show in downtown Los Angeles sponsored by the Prestidigitators
Club. It was my first appearance with the Bottle/Fountain
Act on the West Coast. The act gained a standing ovation
from the full house. After the show George Boston, who was
working on network TV as an advisor at that time and also
had been an assistant to Blackstone, Harry Thurston and
others in his younger days, asked if I knew the story of
how the Multiplying Bottles came about. I said no I did
not since I felt that I had the original set.
George
told a story about his working in the Abbott's Magic Shop
in Los Angeles about 1951 when a "very rich Texan"
walked into the shop. The man seemed interested in magic
so George working on commission went to work with selling
him everything in sight. He sold him a set of the three
bottled Comedy Passé Passé Bottles. Since
the man did not hesitate in his purchase, George sold him
two more sets. When the man asked what he was going to do
with three sets, George said, "Produce the bottles."
I looked at George and smiled. Then I pointed out that the
Texan was not rich and I had bought the sets from him.
What
he had seen that night were "truly the original set
of the Multiplying Bottles."
I
used the Multiplying Bottles in the Air Force Talent Contest
in 1953 & 54. I was winning the contests as I went up
the ladder, but word was getting out about my doing the
Multiplying Bottles and magicians were asking where I got
them. I was doing the Bottles without the water and just
as a screwed up magicians who had bottle appearing. I pulled
them from the finals of the contest, to keep the magic world
from stealing my act. I was too late - it had happened.
In 1954, I was selected by the Air Force to go on the Ed
Sullivan TV show and represent the Air Force. My base would
not release me from duty to work the show - a long story,
I am not happy over.
In
1957, Charlie Dodson of Houston, Texas knowing I was not
happy with the brown paint job of Abbott's located an auto
paint shop that said it would paint my bottles to a Maroon
Metallic color and labels from a bankrupt wine company -
I had something no one else had. A year later, the color
was copied.
Now
you know most of the story of the Multiplying Bottles.

14. The World Premiere Of Billy Topit Master Magician!
--------------------------------------------
Message by Lance Burton forward on by Alfred Hayes
Hi
Friends!
I
am very excited to let you know about the World Premiere
of "Billy Topit Master Magician!" This press release
just went out to the Las Vegas media and the reaction has
been overwhelming. I have a number of interviews scheduled
over the next few weeks and, of course, I will let you know
about them as they come on-line.
Let's get right to it! Here is the info on the World Premiere!
Hope to see you there in person!
Lance
---------------------------------------
Lance Burton's "Billy Topit Master Magician" World
Movie Premiere
September 24th at Brenden Theaters in The Palms.
Event and Limited Release to Benefit Local Charities with
Red Carpet starting at 4 P.M. and Curtain Speech at 5:30
P.M.
Las Vegas (July 13th, 2015) - Produced and Directed by Lance
Burton with screenplay by Lance and Michael Goudeau, "Billy
Topit Master Magician" is not a biography of Lance
Burton's life but a fictional character in a fictional setting
that happens to be set in Lance's adopted hometown of Las
Vegas. "The one thing Billy and I share in common is
this, we both love magic and we both love Las Vegas. I guess
that is two things actually" stated Lance.
The independent comedy took over five years from idea to
theatrical release and has been Lance's labor of love since
retiring his stage show in 2010 at the Monte Carlo Resort.
The inspiration for the movie harkens back to Lance's childhood.
"When I was a kid I saw Bill Bixby in a TV series called
"The Magician." I loved that show. Through the
years there have been many films and TV shows with magician
characters and some were quite good. I just felt that I
could bring something to the table that was genuine. Something
based in reality. I didn't want to do the stereotypical
mysterious magician character. That's why Billy Topit is
a struggling magician, even though he is very skilled."
Lance has a long history in the television and movie industry
from his appearances on "The Tonight Show" with
Johnny Carson to starring in his own network TV specials
to being Magic Consultant on the blockbuster movie "Oz
the Great and Powerful," starring James Franco. "I
was fortunate enough to receive lessons from Lance Burton
and I got to have him as my private teacher for weeks, which
was great. I look at myself on the stage and there are certain
flourishes where I carry myself that definitely come from
Lance, who is just a great guy and a great teacher and great
magician," stated Franco in an interview for "Oz."
The cast of "Billy Topit Master Magician" is full
of many of Lance's friends, most of which are magicians,
jugglers, comedians, as well as actors. Louie Anderson,
Mac King, Robin Leach, as well as, Criss Angel all make
cameo appearances. "When my dear friend Lance asked
me to make a cameo in his movie (Billy Topit Master Magician),
I was honored. When I heard my scene was a twisted nightmare
- I thought perfect - I'm right at home," said Criss
Angel.
While there might be a nightmare scene in the movie Lance
went on to say, "This is a family friendly movie that
I hope will connect with people all over the world. It is
a love letter to Las Vegas. When I am no longer around,
I hope Billy Topit will still be inspiring people to visit
our city. I am also honored to be able to donate all of
the funds raised by the World Premiere and Limited Engagement
run at Brenden Theaters to three charities close to my heart,
Variety The Children's Charity of Southern Nevada, Las Vegas
Shriners and Nevada SPCA. I hope to spread a little magic
around the world with "Billy Topit Master Magician"
and here at home."

15. New Show We Are Producing For India
--------------------------------------------
Message by James George
James
George Inventor of the ITR and George Paul Banda an Ilda
winning Laser Show Artist, founder of Laseronics Cairo and
Laseronics USA. We have combined our talents and we are
producing an Amazing multimedia Illusion show for India...
I
am sure that many of you are immediately thinking that the
last thing India needs is a multimedia laser and illusion
show. How about clean water and sanitation, issues?
After living here for nearly three years, I can tell you
that India is developing at top speed and because of that
a more pressing issue is at hand that our show is designed
to address.
It's like watching one of those time lapse movies living
here, the changes have been so rapid and spectacular.
Sadly
many very serious issues are occurring as they seem to be
copying our western blue print as if it has been an error
free model, big mistake. It will be a very expensive one
if left uncorrected, an expensive one not just for India
either, but for the entire world.
They
could be leaping ahead by investing in concepts like Elon
Musk's Hyperloop solar powered transportation systems and
avoiding the Oil driven model of the west all together.
Oil spills and other environmental costs associated with
such short sided answers, considering Oil is also finite
and can only get more expensive over time. As solar develops
in efficiency we can expect prices to plummet just like
we have witnessed in the computer industry.
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2091213700/the-world-unity-project
Easily
avoiding the massive environmental consequences and pollution
as well. They simply have yet to be exposed to these advanced
ideas, same as many Americans, we are simply not taught
about these things and a lot of negative propaganda is spun
our way in order to serve the Big Oil interests and lobbyists
profits.
This
is only one example of many, many resort like communities
are popping up all over Bangalore like weeds, really nice
living spaces. A lot like the resorts you find in Hawaii
with massive pools, waterslides, hot tubs and waterfalls,
Tennis courts, Billiard tables, Ping pong, Gym and many
connected right next door to shopping centers and malls,
a short walk for all your shopping needs. But failing to
implement grey water systems and other technologies of recent
discovery from our mastery of Earthship Home technologies,
these could be implemented on a community wide scale so
easily right now. We want to show them this vision within
the context of our show and the impact it would have in
the long run.
So
don't get me wrong they are doing many things correctly,
but sadly missing the mark in regards to some of the more
advanced concepts and thinking that have been developed
by Michael Reynolds, (See the Garbage Warrior Documentary)
Buckminster Fuller, Jacque Fresco, Peter Joseph.
They
could easily be incorporating these designs as they are
developing right now and save literally trillions in costs
in the long term if implemented now, this is far too important
an issue not to be addressed as India develops. We plan
to travel this show to other developing Nations as well,
the timing couldn't be better.
Because
organic farming techniques are embraced no pesticides and
other health issues related to them come with these long
term fully integrated solutions.
Reducing
their long term costs in regards to health care. The show
we have developed is called the Unity for Humanity Project
it is a highly entertaining, visual and auditory spectacle,
a multimedia illusion laser show involving India's top musical
talent, dancing, illusions, over twenty vintage and modern
Moog Synthes and many high powered Yag yttrium lasers.
Watch
the Laseronics promo video to get an idea of our capabilities.
We use Three massive 75' wide video screens to communicate
and educate the vision of this advanced prototype community
of the future. Along with Video Mapping fireworks, and a
Laser Harp.
Our
goal of gaining massive media exposure and the attention
of the Government agencies and developers here in order
to implement these ideas and avoid so many costly errors,
and to bring this vision to their attention in a fun and
entertaining way.
Our
primary inspiration for the show is the Artist Christo's,
Jean Michel Jarre, Vangelis, Yanni, David Copperfield.
Our
goal is to expand individuals minds in regards to our current
state of the art technology to lay out the mechanics and
blue prints of these visions so people understand the small
steps and investments they can be making right now for massive
long term gains.
Fortunately
with the Internet today, these ideas can quickly spread
around the world thanks to You Tube and with your small
investment.
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2091213700/the-world-unity-project
Please
share this vision with your friends on Social media and
make a difference for our World, just a tiny thing all of
us doing together, can lead us to such massive positive
changes. Our show is the vehicle for the vision and the
leadership and inspiration to make it happen.
This
is ultimately the path to peace with all Nations, our entire
Military budgets worldwide could eventually be put towards
these solution focused visions. A massive benefit for our
entire world in a few short generations, how about we leave
this world in a better condition than we found it?.
We
can't do this alone, my partner and I have already invested
over $250,000.00 in equipment, we hope to make the first
few test run shows free to the audiences in India.
Why we are asking for your support and donations. Also the
transportation costs and hiring local talent, advertising
and PR Firm costs begin to add up.
So again we appreciate your support, and to personally say
thank you I am giving away a Free Alpha designed ITR this
includes our easy reset feature. Available to anyone who
donates $25.00 or more, simply send your correct address
and a copy of your donation receipt to Sorcerymfg@gmail.com
.
The
assumption here is that it is by our rational choice to
pursue these visions with intelligence. This vision holds
the potential to unite all of humanity independent of our
religions, races and differences.
This
is about our common ground, our common goals, the things
we all share in common, a product of our developing philosophy
symbolism, subscribe on You Tube if you would like to learn
more. For me this makes my illusion show meaningful, it
inspires me and I know this is special. Thank you for making
this happen.
We have programs available for larger donation sponsor's
we appreciate you passing this information along to those
who might share a common interest in this vision and its
promotion.
This
Show will be traveling throughout all major cities in India
and eventually around the world. We appreciate your support
of this kick starter vision, please make your contribution
right now and help us get this off the ground. Again thank
you to all of you for making this possible with all your
support and love for the ITR, without that we would not
have had the funds to get this project to this point.
Now with just a little more we are well on our way! Thank
you for making your donation right now and we look forward
to sharing this show with you on You Tube. We hope you enjoy
the Levitation Device we are offering as a reward.
Sincerely, James B. George & George P. Banda

16. Innovention Liverpool 2015! - Part 1
--------------------------------------------
Message by Mandy Davis (UK)
The
Innovention, held at the Hard Day's Night Hotel and organised
by Paul Stone, proved to be a relaxed event with some interesting
lessons on various aspects of performance.
Paul
opened the convention, late on Tuesday morning, with a description
of the joys of Liverpool. Our convention timetable was a
rough guide and contained no details of events beyond 'Session
1, Session 2' etc.
We
started with a talk, from Las Vegas star Jeff Hobson, on
the birth and design of the 'Illusionarium' - a showroom,
dedicated to magic, on one of the Norwegian shipping line's
boats. Jeff started the talk with a throwaway coin trick
that ended with a prop punchline. He showed us the promotion
film for the Illusionarium which had been put together by
the inventor of the Floating Table, Losander. The Norwegian
'Epic' was the last ship build by the French shipyards;
and Jeff was asked to come and perform during the maiden
voyage from Southampton to New York. He wasn't keen - but
the money offered was great!
Jeff
was asked to 'pitch a show' and his idea was to create a
dedicated spooky mansion in which the magic would happen.
They would also be able to accommodate other settings such
as steampunk to vary the shows that would be performed there.
He showed us photos of the entrance - a long lobby filled
with magic props and memorabilia, built as copies of originals
so that the guests could handle items as they walked through
to the theatre itself.
As
an aside Jeff insisted that we should never sell ourselves
too cheap - in the past he had lost shows that way - so
for this project he talked big numbers and was able to command
the money he needed for the project. He showed us a video
of a sword basket illusion which ended with the production
of two girls; he then showed us the effect again, this time
filmed on an iphone inside the basket - the first and only
time an illusion has been seen from the girls' viewpoint!
The
show is still running, with different performers every few
months. Jeff warned us that it's a constant struggle between
your vision of what works and a big company's idea of what
they want. When you are dealing with producers and directors
you need to remember that the magic comes last. Also, when
people have never produced or directed magic before, it's
the thing in a show that doesn't get enough rehearsal time
compared to the lighting and music etc.
It
was very interesting to learn that Jeff feels that it's
easier to replace magicians with actors than to replace
assistants who, basically do all the work when it comes
to illusions.
The
afternoon session was provided by comedy juggler and scriptwriter,
Michael Goudeau. He had performed as the opening act for
Lance Burton's show for over twenty years and used this
experience, and the years following as a scriptwriter, to
advise us on the difficult art of getting scripting right
for your act.
He
started by assuring us that NOBODY knows how to write comedy!
When he was sixteen years old he learned to do street shows
- from a book! Together with two friends he then went out
and performed - they did twenty-three shows that first day
and earned $100.00! They were hooked!
He
advised us to do as many shows as we possibly can because
if you can do twenty shows a week you are going to get better
at it. In Las Vegas, where he lives, you can perform anywhere
and don't need a license - a friend of his is earning $1000
a week on the Las Vegas streets performing shows.
While
working with his friends they would breakfast every Sunday
with all the jugglers in town - it was a time when everyone
helped each other with their comedy routines. Later Michael
joined Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus where
he studied at their clown school, later working for them.
He wanted to write comedy so he showed some of his jokes
to the people at the circus but they didn't teach comedy
as such so he called on a standup comedy teacher, learned
from him and then did things differently!
Michael
started to explain his methods by announcing 'Laughter comes
from the breaking of assumptions.'
For
instance, a blindfold gives the assumption that you can't
see - when Michael puts on a blindfold in his act and then
easily finds and picks up his knives he is breaking this
assumption. He believes that in every statement there are
many assumptions. When you come on stage wearing a costume
the assumption is that it has a back to it!
The
secret of writing comedy is to write as much as you can
- comedy writing needs a lot of practice. It is a real problem
to sit down and write funny.
He
asked us to give him assumptions about eggs. We came up
with that eggs are:
fresh
fragile
in a shell
have a yolk
This
showed us that the ability to write a list of assumptions
breaks it all down into manageable pieces. Then you have
to break those assumptions and put the surprise at the end.
For instance, assuming that the egg is fragile changes and
brings laughter when it turns out to be solid or hard boiled.
Michael
ended by talking about Character Paradox, giving examples
such as Charlie Chaplin, who is a tramp but a gentleman,
and Johnny Thomson, billed as Poland's Finest Magician,
whose magic goes wrong. We were urged to find a joke that
contrasts with our characters and play it with the volume
turned up. This works with both physical and verbal jokes
and we left this session feeling that we had received some
valuable information.
Part
2 will be published in next week issue of Magic New Zealand
