Message by Paul Daniels (UK)
Once again I have agreed to appear at The Balham Comedy
Festival. I am told that will happen on July 15th. Apparently
I was the Hot Ticket last year
how nice is that?
Spread
the word folks
If the setup is the same as last year
Twitter
is @BalhamComedy and it will be 7.30 @thebedfordpub and
tickets will be on sale at balhamcomedyfestival.com
We
had a great time with the tour of "Back Despite Popular
Demand" but this year I have too much to do with private
and corporate jobs. The live public shows will be spasmodic
I'm afraid.
Don't forget you can catch Debbie most Sunday mornings on
iPlayer for Radio Berkshire.

6. The Magic Word Podcast #230: Magic Words over the Year
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star
During
the past several years, I have asked my guests what their
favorite "magic word" was. That is to say, what
is their philosophy or Mantra. Basically, what is important
to them. I have had a lot of different answers from over
a thousand different guests. But the one overriding answer
that I heard most often was "passion", "fun",
and "love".
In
this special podcast, I took a suggestion from a listener
who suggested that I edit together a bunch of responses
into one podcast. It seemed like a good idea at the time,
but it took well over ten hours to prepare. Fortunately,
I was on my flight from Houston, Texas to Milan, Italy on
my way to FISM and I had some time. So, I didn't sleep the
whole way over just for you. Instead, I edited together
a random sampling of "magic words" from a variety
of guests that I hope you will enjoy.
You
can read the blog, listen to the podcast or download the
MP3 files at: http://themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/magic-words
Of course you can hear it through iTunes, Stitcher, Tunein,
or FeedPress. Next week, expect some great stuff from my
daily updates from FISM in Italy.
Arreverderci,
and thanks for listening.

10. Chair Suspension: Kid Control - #366 - Kyle Peron
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kyle Peron (US)

If you perform this illusion or if you do not, perhaps the
reason is because of the fear of the unknown. It is the
fear of how to control the child and prevent them from doing
something that may harm the illusion or themselves.
Several
things I do try to do are as follows:
My
wife and I perform at every show. For me, she is crucial
to the success of the illusion when I perform it. She is
there to hold the board on the resting chair when the child
is helped up. She is there at the child's head area during
the suspension and helps to look at the child and read any
tell-tale signs of the child getting uneasy. When this happens
she talks to the child to calm them down and sends signals
to me that tells me that I may need to finish the illusion.
If
you perform the illusion yourself, this can still be done.
It just means you paying attention to these areas and making
it a part of your routine. This way you are always in the
right place at the right time for spotting and checking
as the routine of the illusion takes place.
I
know building trust between the child and my self is crucial
for me. I know this is a critical key for me to determine
if the child is a better candidate for the illusion or not.
Over the years I have gotten pretty good at finding children
that want to help out and determining the proper child.
My
warm up for the routine is also a critical part of the routine.
It is here where I try and calm the child, build trust in
them with me and let them know we are to have fun. I never
ever just rush into it and place a kid on this illusion.
I have to respect that the child needs to know they will
be ok and they will have fun and that they can trust me.
In
the warm up I bring the child up to assist. Instead of just
placing them on the illusion, I do a small routine with
them upfront down on their level. The main thing I am looking
for is engagement with me and getting them to laugh. Laughter
is a tell-tale sign that the child is having fun, is ok
and trusts me in what we will do.
Nothing
is 100% guaranteed to be safe, but there are ways in which
you can minimize anything from happening if you are conscious
of it and make it a point to strive to not let your love
for the effect overpower your common sense.
In
over the hundreds and hundreds of performances of this illusion,
I have not once had any problems or issues with it or a
child. I think that is partially because I do strive to
make an effort of putting safety before anything else. I
am lucky I guess and I thank God that I am able to perform
it the way I do. I know this is not to say that it will
never happen, but I think my way of thinking about this
illusion, helps me a great deal in knowing when I can perform
it and when it is best to be left out of the show.

11. FISM - Film Director, Federico Fellini
--------------------------------------------
Message by Joan Caesar (Canada)
Join
us at FISM in Rimini, to see the birthplace of Federico
Fellini, (1920-1993), a world renowned Italian film director
and scriptwriter and one of the most famous people born
in Rimini. Known for his distinct style that blends fantasy
and baroque images with earthiness, he is considered one
of the greatest and most influential filmmakers of the 20th
century. After reading outlines of his works on Wikipedia,
I'm bound to rent some of his films on DVD before I leave
for FISM. Read the following to learn why.
In
a career spanning almost fifty years, Fellini won five Academy
Awards including the most Oscars in history for Best Foreign
Language Film
Although
Fellini adapted key events from his childhood and adolescence
in films such as I Vitelloni (1953), 8½ (1963), and
Amarcord (1973), he insisted that such autobiographical
memories were inventions.
In
the spring of 1956, Fellini wrote Nights of Cabiria. The
film was inspired from news reports of a woman's severed
head retrieved in a lake and stories by Wanda, a shantytown
prostitute Fellini met on the set of Il Bidone. The movie
won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film at
the 30th Academy Awards and the star, Masina, won the Best
Actress Award at Cannes for her performance.
Fellini
was not without controversy. In spite of being condemned
as a "public sinner" for La Dolce Vita the film
broke all box office records. As scalpers sold tickets for
1000 lire, crowds queued for hours to see the "immoral
movie" before the censors banned it. At an exclusive
Milan screening on February 5, 1960, one outraged patron
spat on Fellini while others hurled insults. Denounced in
parliament by right-wing conservatives, undersecretary Domenico
Magrì of the Christian Democrats demanded tolerance
for the film's controversial themes. The Vatican's official
press organ, L'Osservatore Romano, lobbied for censorship
while the Board of Roman Parish Priests and the Genealogical
Board of Italian Nobility attacked the film.
The
shooting of 8½ began in 1962. Nominated for four
Oscars, 8½ won awards for best foreign language film
and best costume design in black-and-white.
Increasingly
attracted to parapsychology, Fellini met the Turin magician
Gustavo Rol in 1963. Rol, a former banker, introduced him
to the world of Spiritism and séances. In 1964, Fellini
took LSD under the supervision of his psychoanalyst. Fellini's
hallucinatory insights were given full flower in his first
colour feature Juliet of the Spirits (1965), about a housewife
who rightly suspects her husband's infidelity and succumbs
to the voices of spirits summoned during a séance
at her home.
To
help promote Satyricon in the United States, Fellini flew
to Los Angeles in January 1970 for interviews with Dick
Cavett and David Frost. In February, Fellini scouted locations
in Paris for The Clowns, a docu-fiction for television based
on his childhood memories of the circus and a "coherent
theory of clowning.
Over
a period of six months in 1973, Fellini shot the Oscar-winning
Amarcord. Loosely based on the director's 1968 autobiographical
essay My Rimini, the film depicts the adolescent Titta and
his friends working out their sexual frustrations against
the religious and Fascist backdrop of a provincial town
in Italy during the 1930s. The movie became Fellini's second
biggest commercial success after La Dolce Vita.
Fellini
was also an artist. Organized by his publisher in 1982,
the first major exhibition of 63 drawings by Fellini was
held in Paris, Brussels, and New York. A gifted caricaturist,
much of the inspiration for his sketches was derived from
his dreams. Under the title Fellini's Designs, he published
350 drawings in pencil, watercolours, and felt pens.
On
September 6, 1985 Fellini was awarded the Golden Lion for
lifetime achievement at the 42nd Venice Film Festival. That
same year, he became the first non-American to receive the
Film Society of Lincoln Center's annual award for cinematic
achievement.
Fellini
won the Praemium Imperiale, the equivalent of the Nobel
Prize in the visual arts, awarded by the Japan Art Association
in 1990.
In
July 1991 and April 1992, Fellini worked in close collaboration
with Canadian filmmaker Damian Pettigrew to establish "the
longest and most detailed conversations ever recorded on
film". Described as the "Maestro's spiritual testament"
by his biographer, excerpts from the conversations later
served as the basis of their feature documentary, Fellini:
I'm a Born Liar (2002) and the book, I'm a Born Liar: A
Fellini Lexicon.
In
April 1993, Fellini received his fifth Oscar for lifetime
achievement "in recognition of his cinematic accomplishments
that have thrilled and entertained audiences worldwide".
On June 16, he entered the Cantonal Hospital in Zurich for
an angioplasty but suffered a stroke in Rimini two months
later. He suffered a second stroke and fell into an irreversible
coma. Fellini died in Rome on October 31, 1993 at the age
of 73, a day after his fiftieth wedding anniversary. The
memorial service was attended by an estimated 70,000 people.
Fellini,
Masina and their son Pierfederico are buried in a bronze
sepulchre sculpted by Arnaldo Pomodoro. Designed as a ship's
prow, the tomb is located at the main entrance to the Cemetery
of Rimini. The Federico Fellini Airport in Rimini is named
in his honour.

Message forwarded by Phil Temple (US)
Sad
News: Just got word from Byron Walker that Marge Albo died
earlier this week from lung cancer. Dr. Bob Albo and Marge
were well known to magic collectors around the world, and
Bob's numerous publications on the art of magic line the
shelves of collectors worldwide.
Marge
was ever-present at Dr. Albo's side throughout his career
both as a noted physician and collector of all things magical
(not to mention his working with the Golden State Warriors
and Oakland Raiders as Team Physician for decades). The
passing of these two good friends leaves a void that cannot
be filled. RIP dear friends . . .
