Criss Angel Magic Stunt Goes Horribly Wrong, 'America's
Got Talent' Magician Spencer Horsman Gets Trapped In Water
Filled Box
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2p9jyW2BhNw
A
video of a stunt going badly wrong at a Criss Angel rehearsal
for his upcoming show, The Supernaturalists, has emerged,
and it shows Spencer Horsman trapped inside a box filled
with water that was dangling dozens of feet above stage.
The
footage, which you can view below, will immediately remind
you just how dangerous the profession is. However, you should
be warned that the video is rather disturbing to watch,
so proceed with caution.

4. The Magic Word Podcast - Francis Menotti - The Absurdist
Magician
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star
Teller
calls Francis Menotti, "The future of magic."
Indeed, Francis is an iconic thinker and his performances
are certainly "out of the box". He says he has
often been called a "surrealist magician" but
he tends to think of himself as an "absurdist magician".
Whatever you want to call Francis Menotti, just don't call
him an average magician.
I
have seen and worked with Francis on many occasions and
have always found his performances and our chats to both
be inventive and thought provoking. In this week's podcast,
Francis talks about some of the thinking behind his art,
how he structures his act, and a peek at his creative brain.
You
can read the blog, watch a couple videos, see some photos,
listen to the podcast online, or download the MP3 files
at:
http://themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/francis-menotti
And as
usual, you can download and listen through iTunes, Stitcher,
Tunein and FeedPress.
I
will be attending FISM in Rimini, Italy in a couple weeks
looking for people to chat with on the podcast. If you see
me, please say hello. Who knows? You might end up on the
next Magic Word Podcast? Ciao bella.

7. FISM - Rimini's Malatesta Temple
--------------------------------------------
Message by Joan Caesar (Canada)
Rimini's
Malatesta Temple is a must-see during FISM. Consecrated
in 800 AD and completed in 1468, it is an important example
of the Italian Renaissance. It houses many Italian art treasures
including paintings and sculptures. Surprisingly, Pope Pius
II called it a temple of devil worship and condemned it.
This
is the mausoleum church of the Malatesta family who ruled
Rimini between 1295-1528. The concept of temple applies
to the structure because Leon Battista Alberti wanted to
mimic (which he did, at least in part) the architectural
structure of the ancient temples. The restoration works,
started in 1450 were never completed. The visitor can see
the church's marble façade which Alberti had encase
to capture the original medieval church.
In
1809 the edifice was deemed a cathedral, and is chronologically,
the third cathedral of Rimini. Try to find the time to visit
it during a tour of Rimini before or after FISM.
FISM
2015 will soon be both history and a wonderful memory to
those lucky enough to attend. I leave for Italy in just
a couple of days. Italy is a magnificent country. I'm looking
forward to spending time in Florence before traveling to
Rimini, then seeing many of the things I've talked about
during the past months. Thank you for your interest in my
blog during the past year.

8. Remarkable Magic #395 - Nick Lewin
--------------------------------------------
Message by Nick Lewin (US)
Be
yourself, everyone else is taken.
The
title of this column really contains the full text and message!
I is certainly not an original statement and I can't lay
claim to coming up with it. It is however a really important
concept that it is always useful to remind performers about.
Magic
is one of the rare creative forms where you can buy fully
developed, and carefully articulated hunks of material.
The fairly common jibe from comedians is that unlike a fully-fledged
comedian it is possible for a magician to go into a magic
store and buy an act. While this isn't quite true, it is
painfully close to being so - it just won't be much of a
show! This certainly isn't the case with a good comedy act.
The closest you could do is buy a book of jokes, and turning
joke book
gags into a professional act is like trying to rearrange
alphabet soup into a best-selling novel!
They
are wonderfully different art forms comedy and magic, but
when you combine them you are truly walking a bit of a tightrope.
There are many magnificent routines that are immaculately
thought out and detailed, which are sold to magicians as
complete units. There is a correspondingly large quantity
of magicians who are hobbyists and enthusiasts who quite
simply do not have the time, skill or opportunity to create
an entire show of original material. You can't beat a supply
and demand situation!
Hand
in glove with that last statement is the fact that a great
many magicians make a nice living or a nice addition to
the bank balance by using their skills to create cool routines
for other magicians to perform. I think it is fair to say
that there are quite a few writers/magical inventors who
wouldn't make nearly as much cash if they just performed
these routines themselves instead of retailing them to the
magical fraternity.
The
comedy world is a little different in so much as there are
relatively few amateur or hobbyist comedians. The people
who might fit into this description are usually referred
to as class clowns or office wags. Without the original
material needed to make it past an open mike night at the
neighborhood bar a "wanna' be" comedian's act
(or lack of it) pretty much just withers and dies on the
vine. This is just the way it is, it is all about the material
for a comedian, and it has to be original in this day and
age.
A
hobbyist magician often fails to appreciate the value that
is placed on an original joke, and when I say value I am
talking about hard cash! A simple original one-liner might
be sold to a comedian for several hundred dollars. You can't
make a living as a comic just by dipping into a Robert Orben
joke book from the '50s, or repeating the joke you heard
Jimmy Fallon tell on the Tonight Show the night before.
A comedy magician who is paying his dues can often get away
with comedy that a dedicated comedian can't. He can dazzle
you with his magic or baffle you with his bullshit and get
away with murder in the comedy department.
There
is nothing right or wrong about any of these facts, they
are just the way it is. Ninety percent of magicians simply
do not work often enough to fully develop strong original
acts, and an entire (huge) industry has sprung up to supply
them with made to order material. He can buy a great routine
that might even have a fully realized script that goes along
with it. This allows him to cut his learning curve down
immensely of course. However, there is one little problem
- several hundred or thousand other magicians may have bought
that same DVD or book.
The
sensible thing to remember is that the routine you purchased
may well be a fully finished product, but it is also just
a jumping off point for the creative performer. Learn the
rhythm and understand the structure of the routine you purchased
(and it is important to do that - don't change things around
before you know the workings of what you are tinkering with)
and then build on it. Make it your own and you will be entering
a new level of skill as an original performer.
The
very simplest way to make a piece of material your own is
by adding your own personality to it. You bought the material,
however if you borrow the style, timing and personality
of the person who created itm then you have become something
less than yourself in the scheme of things. By bringing
yourself into the mix you change the entire equation and
have become a co-creator, which is a very much stronger
role than merely someone who performs other people's words
and actions by rote. At first you might lose a laugh or
two or a little bit of impact when you initially develop
and transform that purchased material, however within
a surprisingly short space of time you might find something
much more important -yourself.
Or
to put it another way, "Be yourself, everyone else
is taken!"

five years, to recognize excellence in magic.
The
Allan Slaight Awards will be distributed across five categories:
Sharing Wonder (Live or Digital), Sharing Secrets, International
Rising Star, Canadian Rising Star, and Lifetime Achievement.
The
Sharing Wonder category will recognize the most innovative
performance of magic over the past calendar year, either
in live performance or a digital medium. The goal is to
recognize exceptional performances, by exceptional artists.
Sharing
Secrets will recognize the most exceptional creative, innovative
or well-presented (live, in print, or digital) works that
advance the study of magic as a performing art. The focus
will be on the techniques that magicians use or can use
to advance the work. Works related to the history of magic
and its practitioners will also be considered in this category.
The International Rising Star award will recognize emerging
talent, while a separate award will be given to an emerging
Canadian talent.
A
Lifetime Award will recognize a person, company or organization
that has demonstrated a commitment to advancing magic as
a performing art, and made major contributions to that goal
throughout their lifetime.
The
word "magic" includes ancillary subjects such
as illusions, mentalism and sleight-of hand, and any other
branch that can be considered to fall under the broad rubric
of magic. The Allan Slaight Awards are international in
scope. Magicana will accept submissions from performers,
creators, writers, designers, and anyone else with an interest
in magic, wherever they reside or perform. One can submit
his or her own work for consideration, or the work of any
other individual or organization. The portal for submitting
works will be added to the Magicana website this summer
so that works created in 2015 can be submitted for consideration.
Magicana
will publish and promote a "Long List" of submissions
under consideration with, where possible, links to those
submissions. A panel of three independent judges will review
the Long List in each category, and reduce the list to a
"Short List" of potential recipients. The judges
will then determine a final recipient in each category.
Winners
will be announced annually and awarded with the following
amounts:
Lifetime Achievement - $15,000
Sharing Wonder - $15,000
Sharing Secrets - $10,000
International Rising - $5,000
Canadian Rising - $5,000

14. Innovention Convention
--------------------------------------------
Message by Paul Stone
The
Innovention Convention which will be taking place in Liverpool,
England from 14 - 16 July is definitely one of the best
kept secrets in magic. We have carefully limited the amount
of advertising and publicising of this very unique event
because we are closing registrations when we reach the magic
number of 100 attendees. We have done this because we want
everyone who registers to be treated like a VIP and be guaranteed
a great seat for every session and show.
At
the Innovention there will be an unrivalled opportunity
to spend quality time with all the performers, speakers,
and magic stars. The line-up of talent is top class with
our major headliner Jeff Hobson taking a rare few days away
from the Illusionists Show which is currently touring the
USA and building up to a return booking on Broadway. This
will be Jeff's only magic convention appearance in 2015.
A
few of the other performers not only appearing on stage
but also taking in part in our 'Pros Speak' sessions are
Michael Goudeau, ( Guest Star for over 5000 shows in Lance
Burton's Fabulous show in Las Vegas ), Paul Zerdin ( four
time Royal Variety Show Star ), Sos & Victoria and mGraham
P Jolley. John Fealey, a terrific comedy performer will
be there too and Bob Kohler is making only his second appearance
in UK in 15 years.
We
are still planning to announce a couple more exciting names,
but we can tell you that Wayne Dobson, Mark Raffles, Geoff
Ray, Paul Ray, David Hemingway, Don Bevan, Keith & Pam
Cooper and Gerry Cottle will all be at the Innovention too,
so this really is a wonderful chance to rub shoulders and
spend quality time with many of magic's legendary names.
If
you are a performer much of the emphasis of the Innovention
will be to help you to become a better and more successful
entertainer. The wealth of performing experience that the
artists appearing at the Innovention have to share with
those attending is unrivalled at any magic convention and
gained from literally thousands of stage and cabaret shows
all over the world.
The
two Innovention venues are both unique too. The Hard Day's
Night Hotel and the Epstein Theatre are both located right
in the heart of Liverpool's City Centre, which is now one
of the most exciting cities in Europe to visit, and it is
particularly vibrant in July.
We
are moving closer to 100 registrations so if you don't want
to miss out then go to www.innoventionliverpool.com and
register now before it is too late. And if you move fast
you can take advantage of a great offer too as the website
quotes a figure of 175 GB Pounds but until the end of April
when you register you will only be charged the special pre-registration
price of 155 GB Pounds.
