3. FISM - Currency Exchange Suggestions
--------------------------------------------
Message by Joan Caesar (Canada)
Currency
Exchange suggestions plus Things you shouldn't miss in Rimini
& Area
Extrapolating from several websites, it appears that the
11 things we shouldn't miss seeing are in no particular
order:
The
Beach and Ferris Wheel
The Augustus Arch
The Tiberio Bridge
The Fish Market area
The Historic Centre of town
Martiri Square
Fellini Park
Cavour Square
Surgeon's House,
The Amphitheatre
A day trip to San Marino
All
of the suggestions above have been described in previous
blogs and on the internet. Personally, I hope to have the
opportunity to see most of them before or during the FISM
convention.
I
have been asked the best way to exchange dollars for euros
while in Italy. Below are some tips I found on the internet
and through the FISM folks.
ATMs
are the best choice for day-to-day funds.
Banks
and post offices have cheaper rates of exchange than other
places
"No-fee"
bureau de changes are usually the most expensive places
to change money.
Exchanging
money at the airport is usually very expensive
The
2 closest post offices to the PalaCongressi are:
Postal Office Rimini 6
Piazza Tripoli, 4/5
47900 Rimini (RN)
+39 0541/390345
Postal
Office Rimini Center
Corso d'Augusto, 8,
47900 Rimini RN
+39 0541 634266
From
Gene Anderson:
Both
Chemical Bank and Dow CU use Travelex to exchange from USD
to other currencies.
Goggle "currency exchange in Italy" or search
terms to that effect. Paragraphs 2-4 in Rick Steves' https://www.ricksteves.com/travel-tips/money/cash-tips
give the reader lots of insight.

5. The Magic Word Podcast - Harry Allen - Clowning Around
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star
Harry
Allen is a well-known and much loved magic dealer who not
only sells magic, but also is a successful performer and
author, too. In this day and age with the proliferation
of online magic shops, Harry Allen and his business partner,
Irv Cook, are one of the hold-outs who continue to find
success in operating a true "brick and mortar"
shop specializing only in magic.
Part
of their success is that Harry continues to travel around
the world displaying at magic conventions in the dealers'
room. They don't necessarily jump on board and sell all
the "latest and greatest" that usually ends up
as a "flash in the pan" (no pun intended). They
sell the staples, the basic stuff that is wanted and needed
by every magician from thumb tips to double back cards to
crystal/silk cylinders and more. Yes, they do sell new items
that are hot on the market, but they are selective in choosing
what they sell.
Well,
this isn't intended to be a commercial for Daytona Magic
Shop, nor is this week's podcast focused on trying to push
you to their store. This week we talk about Harry, the man,
the magician, the comedian and all of those who influenced
him along the way. He talks about meeting some of comedy's
greats like Henny Youngman (Google him if you don't recognize
the name) and others. He also discusses some personal stories
about his family and his business and working comedy into
your act.
You

sites, listen to the podcast online or download the MP3

Although we have gained quite a following on Facebook, for
some reason, the numbers aren't keeping up on Twitter. Pop

100 by following us on Twitter at http://Twitter.com/MagicWordPod

6. The Magic Word Podcast - John Gaughan - Magic's Builder
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star
I
don't consider myself to be a "fan boy" and especially
act as such in front of anyone I talk with on the podcast.
But this week I must admit to being overwhelmed and overjoyed
at getting to spend time with John Gaughan in his workshop
among all of his collection. I have long been a student
of magic history and in particular, "The Turk",
the chess playing automaton. And to actually see "The
Turk" in Johnny's room was, well, awe inspiring. And
it was inspirational to hear the stories that John told
about magicians down through history plus those he built
for such as Siegfried and Roy, Doug Henning, David Copperfield
and so many, many more.
In
this podcast, we get to hear John talk about building and
creating illusions for magicians as he talks about some
of his successes and disappointments. He also tells us how
he got into wood crafting and repairing automata. I also
recorded a few videos of his workshop and his collection
which are posted on YouTube and linked through the blog.
You
can read the blog, view the videos, see some photos, listen
to the podcast online or download the MP3 files at: http://themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/john-gaughan
You can also download the podcast through iTunes, Stitcher,

7. Remarkable Magic #393 - Nick Lewin
--------------------------------------------
Message by Nick Lewin (US)
AbraCORNdabra,
a Great Convention.
I
want to take this opportunity to reminisce about a really
wonderful magic convention that I appeared in last month
in Des Moines, Iowa. It was the rather niftily titled AbraCORNdabra.
This was as smoothly planned and produced as any convention
I have ever attended. The most amazing thing was that every
single event seemed to start exactly on time. Who could
achieve such a magical feat? Lay it squarely at the hands
of Steve Daley or as he is affectionately known to audiences
around the country "Tiny Bubbles."
I
am writing this column while I am away from my office, and
the convention program, poster etc. are not at hand for
me to consult. However, I have delayed too long in writing
it and if I miss a name or two please forgive me! My memories
of the event are ALL fond and I enjoyed each and everyone's
participation in this delightful event. It was a truly special
occasion where I met old friends and also made new ones.
First
and foremost I have to say that the attention to detail
and professionalism shown by Mr. Daley was incredibly impressive.
He should have himself cloned and produce magic conventions
worldwide, or at the very least he should film a training
video for other folk planning to organize conventions! Starting
with the delightful guest entertainer packages that were
waiting for each and every one of his performing/lecturing
team---this was one heck of a class act!
The
hour time limit on lectures and the tightly structured shows
kept everything moving at a wonderful tempo, but still leaving
plenty of time to mix and mingle with our fellow magicians.
The Gala show ran a tad longer than Steve planned (though
about an hour less than I expected!) and still left the
crowd wanting more. Some of my highlights include working
with Murray Sawchuck, Christopher Carter, David Seebach
and the legendary Tom Mullica. I don't think I have ever
seen a magic gala hosted as smoothly as Tom achieved it.
He was a riot of laughs and managed to speed up the pacing
(of an already high tempo show) while delivering his laughs.
It was truly a delight for me to finally work with this
iconic showman. He is truly a master.
The
lecture series not only included great magic but some slightly
surprising and charming events such as Lupe Nielsen's lecture
on magic posters and Lynetta Welch's lecture on magical
fabrics, Another rather lovely touch was Kathryn Flocken
- an expert paper silhouette Artist who not only demonstrated
- but taught everyone the craft of paper cutting, just as
Dai Vernon presented it in his early years, and at the Magic
Castle.
Close-up
magic was well represented by performers such as Lupe Nielsen,
Trixie Bond, Randi Rain and the superb sleight of hand of
Suzanne The Magician. Suzanne's lecture was considered by
many of those present to be a convention highlight; sadly
I had to miss it due to a conflicting rehearsal. I will
look forward to catching Suzanne's act again at the Magic
Castle where she pulverizes the sophisticated audiences
whenever they are lucky enough to steal her from her hometown
commitments. If this sounds like a lot of magic in two and
a half days ---it was! Sadly I am only getting down some
of the highlights, as the magic, learning and fun went on
at a mighty pace throughout the event.
I
noticed that Steve has the dates set for the next five years
of AbraCORNdabra Conventions and I think he is right to
do so. This is one tightly compressed event that could well
be a major fixture on the "To Do" list of magicians
across the country. It was absolutely my pleasure to perform
and lecture at such an illustrious event! Congratulations
to all concerned for a job well done. I now look forward
to my next magic convention, when I will be performing and
lecturing at the TAOM Convention in my hometown of Austin.
Look
out for my new Ultimate Gypsy Yarn Routine, which is about
to go on pre-sale. This handling teaches you how to turn
a small piece of magic into a feature trick that fits flat
in your top pocket! This is the trick that made me want
to become a magician. You can check out my online magic

8. Festival - Banners and Car Magnets - #364 - Kyle Peron
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kyle Peron (US)
magic4u02@aol.com
http://www.facebook.com/perondesign
http://www.kpmagicproducts.com
I would like to take a moment to talk about two unique ways
in which to market yourself while at the festival. This
is in the form of banners and car magnet advertising. Both
have their pros and cons so I will try and touch base on
each of these so that you might be able to make the best
decision that best meets your own needs.
-
Banners: Banners come in all shapes and sizes and can be
done in flat colors to full photo images. I use a banner
when I have to set up my own BOR booth area or if I have
to provide my own staging area at a festival of a smaller
size. I usually get a banner that spans about 10 feet across
so that it will hang nicely from the two poles of my Quickstep
pop up canopy. This way people can immediately know who
I am, what I am about and spark some interest in my performances
that day.
If
you are going to use a banner, keep in mind that it must
read fairly quickly and at a distance. Festivals have people
walking from all areas and you want them to be able to see
and read your name or show title clearly. This means keep
it simple and provide enough contrast so that it is legible.
Too much information can work against you in this format.
You
can also use another banner system that is a banner that
retracts (like a roller shade) into a base. These are really
great to utilize because they pack down small and set up
quickly. You can have almost anything designed and printed
on them. It is a great way to extend your brand and get
your marketing information out there. Place it near your
performance area and include at least your name and website.
There are many companies out offering this type of banner
system. A quick search will yield great results for you.
I like to use a place called Postupstand.com as they do
a very nice job.
-
Car Magnets: Car magnets can be a great way to not only
let people know who you are and market yourself while at
the festival, but it also serves as a great way for the
festival staff and crew to know whose vehicle it is and
why you may be parked in a certain area. In some states,
these can make your vehicle be considered a commercial vehicle.
If so, put them on when you arrive and remove them when
you leave.
However,
I will make it clear that some folks have told me that in
certain states or areas it is illegal to advertise using
car magnets. As I am not a lawyer, I cannot fully confirm
this. I will just state it here that it might be best to
look into it before getting them done. In my direct area,
I have not known of anyone having any problems with this.
Car magnets can be made up at any sign place or stationary
store like Staples or Office Depot. Many printing places
are also able to do this and printing type places will also
be able to do this. Because it is usually done in vinyl,
it makes it easy to clean off and take off the car after
an event. As with your banner, the idea is to keep it simple
and readable so that even when you are driving, people can
get the information from the sign easily.
One thing to keep in mind when using car magnets is that
they can be taken off easily. This also means that others
can do the same. Be careful when using car magnets in locations
where you cannot see your vehicle or where you feel it might
not be safe to keep them on during the festival.

I
have a new book out I would like you to know about all about
working the Festival market. If you would like additional
and detailed information on this topic, please see my book/eBook

always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your
thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or

love to hear from you.

14. Why I will Attend The FCM Convention June 22
--------------------------------------------
Message by Dennis Schick, US.
Someone
asked me the other day why I am going to the 64th Annual
International Convention of the Fellowship of Christian
Magicians June 22-26, 2015. Here are my Top Ten answers:
(10)
I will learn new skills (magic, balloon twisting, comedy,
juggling, etc.) and can polish some I already have. More
skills mean higher demand.
(9)
The convention meets on a college campus (always a pleasant
experience which makes me feel younger), in Nashville, Tennessee
(a world-class tourist destination).
(8)
The costs of the convention, lodging, and meals are all
great bargains.
(7)
The focus throughout the convention is on clean, family
fun and entertainment.
(6)
There are free, public Gala Shows every evening, with great
gospel music.
(5)
I can sell some unwanted magic stuff in the Flea Market
and the Auction.
(4)
There are terrific vendors of all types in the Trade Show.
Some who do not show elsewhere?
(3)
Its relaxing and inspiring to go to the daily morning devotions,
the Hour of Power, and other faith-based events.
(2)
As a Magician I am challenged to become a better performer.
And the number one reason I am going to the FCM convention:
(1)
As a Christian I have an obligation to learn how I can more
effectively share the message of Jesus Christ.
For
more information, go to www.fcm.org.

Message by Stan Allen, MAGIC Live!
We
have a thing about secrets here at MAGIC Live! We fully
believe in the power of surprise. In the world of magic,
there's nothing quite so powerful. Except...
Every
now and then, on rare occasions, there comes along something
that actually trumps the emotion of surprise and wonder.
Or perhaps more accurately, enhances those emotions. The
following announcement is that rarest of things: a surprise
that actually increases impact upon being revealed.
It
began when my buddy Norman Beck came to me with an outrageous
idea. Upon hearing what he had in mind, I simply said, "It'll
never happen." Norman insisted he might be able to
bring this concept to fruition. I mentioned it to a friend
of mine and his reaction was the same as mine:
"No
way!"
Well,
as it turns out, thanks to Norman - Way!
Steve
Forte - The most sought after person on the planet in card
circles.
Ron
Conley - The leading poker expert in the world.
Bill
Malone - One of the most successful close-up magicians in
history.
What
would you give to be a fly on the wall watching these three
legends in session?
Now
is your one and only chance.
See
you at MAGIC Live - like no other magic convention in the
