4. The Magic Word #220: My Week at The Magic Castle 2015
- Part One
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star
I
have annually been bringing you daily convention coverage
this time of the year from the prestigious Fechter's Finger
Flicking Frolic (F.F.F.F.). Unfortunately this year the
stars didn't align as I would have wanted them. An opportunity
came up for me to perform at The Magic Castle, so I took
that week-long engagement. I always have the best time out
here and they treat their performers like royalty. We even
get our own personal butler while in the Castle who sees
to our every need.
This
week's "Magic Word" is the first of several upcoming
podcasts recorded while I was in Los Angeles, California
performing in the Close-Up Gallery. I arrived a few days
early to attend the Swap Meet to sell a few things and to
visit with some friends in and around the Castle. In this
podcast, we chat with Newell Unfried and Howard Hamburg
sitting in "Dai Vernon's Corner" where they "one-up"
each other regaling stories from long ago in the Castle.
They talk about Dai Vernon, Jimmy Grippo, Earl Nelson, and
many, many more. This is a podcast that's chock full of
stories. Although the stories take up most of this podcast,
we do have a little time left to visit Bill Goodwin, Magic
Castle Librarian and "Magic Castle Close-Up Magician
of the Year" who talks about the collection of videos
that supplement the books in the library.
You
can read the blog, see some photos, listen to the podcast
online or download the MP3 file on the website at: http://themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/the-magic-castle-2015-part-one
You can also download it from iTunes, Stitcher, TuneIn and
FeedPress.
Stay
tuned for more podcasts from The Magic Castle over the next
several weeks. I have two additional recordings already
edited, lined up and ready to go...and I still have six
more days out here to record even more chats! I'm excited
and I hope you will be, too!

5. FISM - Rimini's Ferris Wheel
--------------------------------------------
Message by Joan Caesar (Canada)
Rimini, like London, has an enormous panoramic Ferris wheel
running during the summer season. It is the largest working
Ferris wheel in Europe.
The
wheel is more than 55 meters high, and its 42 see-through
gondolas can carry 6 people each, with a capacity of 2000
people per hour. Each trip lasts 4-6 minutes.
It boasts a breathtaking 360 degree view of both Rimini
and the Adriatic as well as the local countryside. It stands
near the port of Rimini just a few steps from the sea and
is easily seen from many parts of the city's tourist area.
One
tourist said on Trip Advisor, "Since Rimini is about
beaches, you need a bird's eye view to get the idea of the
whole city. It is a huge and beautiful wheel especially
at night when a multitude of neon colours are reflected
off the wheel. The cost is expensive but easily worth it.
Entrance tickets often give discounts to other attractions."
The cost last year was 8 Euro.
--------------------------------------------
6. FISM - Day Trip To San Marino
--------------------------------------------
Message by Joan Caesar (Canada)
Day Trip to San Marino
I
have planned to fly to Rimini before FISM in order to visit
San Marino. With regular bus service between Rimini and
San Marino, it's an easy trip, and popular with tourists.
One service stops at approximately twenty advertised locations
in Rimini and within San Marino, with its two terminus stops
at Rimini railway station and San Marino coach station,
respectively. The cost of the 50 minute trip is about 7.50
Euro.
San
Marino, officially the Republic of San Marino, is the third
smallest country in Europe, after the Vatican and Monaco,
and is the world's oldest surviving sovereign state and
constitutional republic in the world. It is surrounded by
Italy, and only 10 km (about 6 miles) from Rimini. It is
an immensely popular day trip from surrounding Italy, so
join the crowds climbing up to Castello della Cesta and
pick up an extremely kitsch souvenir. No way am I missing
the opportunity to visit San Marino before FISM begins!
It lies 657 metres above sea level with spectacular views
of the surrounding countryside and Adriatic coast. Legend
has it that the founder of San Marino, a stonemason arrived
from the island of Rab in Dalmatia, climbed Mt. Titano to
found a small community of Christians, persecuted for their
faith in 301.
San
Marino is made up of a few towns dotted around the mountain
sides. The capital of San Marino is itself called 'San Marino'
and is situated on a mountain top. The capital is surrounded
by a wall and three distinct towers overlook the rest of
the country. The site "San Marino: Historic Centre
and Mount Titano" became part of the UNESCO World Heritage
List in 2008. San Marino is 20 times bigger than Monaco
and half the size of Liechtenstein.
There
is a 1.5 km aerial tram connecting the city of San Marino
on top of Monte Titano with Borgo Maggiore, a major town
in the republic, with the second largest population. For
the tourist the tram gives the best available views of Borgo
Maggiore, as the gondola cars sweep low over the rooftops
of the main town square. From here a further connection
is available by local bus to the nation's largest settlement,
Dogana. Service is provided at roughly fifteen minute intervals
throughout the day.
The
upper station of the tram is situated close to a tourist
information office. However, the lower station in Borgo
Maggiore has a number of retail and catering outlets situated
within its overall structure.

7. Kellar Exhibit Hall To Recreate Martinka's Back Room
--------------------------------------------
Message by George Schindler (US)
Martinka's
Magic shop in New York City was where the Society of American
Magicians was founded on May 10, 1902.
In
the tradition of that iconic shop, the Society will recreate
its private "back room" in its Harry Kellar Exhibit
Hall, (dealer room), at its convention in Philadelphia July
1-4. When you bought something at that iconic magic store
you would be ushered into the back room for instruction.
The convention will have a private back room for our Martinka's
too. Without a doubt, this is not going to be an average
"convention dealer's room".
.
Exhibitors will come from around the world and include,
MagicBase Pro - Bob Miller Magic, from Minnesota, Losander
and Tricksupply.com from Las Vegas, Joe Mogar and Meir Yedid
Magic from New Jersey, Zanadu - P&L Magic from Connecticut,
Penguin Magic from Indiana, Bob Little - Wild Man Wild,
SWC Magic and Flip Disc Production from Pennsylvania, BJW
Magical Jewelers from Michigan, Magic Art Studio from Massachusetts,
Card Shark from Germany, Cave of Wonders Magic from Texas,
John A. Greget Magic Lists from Arizona, Mike's Magic from
Virginia, Magic Backdrops from North Carolina, Happie Amp
and Daytona Magic from Florida .
Visit
the Convention page at www.magicsam.com for details and
dealer links.

8. Remarkable Magic #388 - Nick Lewin
--------------------------------------------
Message by Nick Lewin (US)
Making
your own breaks.
When
I hear magicians complaining about lack of work I secretly
suspect that what they need is a little more imagination
to keep their datebooks filled. As my teacher Mr. Gurdjieff
used to say, "It is no use sitting with your mouth
open waiting for roast pigeon to fly into it". There
is usually something suitable awaiting your attention ---
if you just look hard enough for it.
In
honesty, I think magicians are one of the most resourceful
of all the entertainment genres. Most of them have been
putting on their own shows and promoting them since they
were kids, even if we were mostly recruiting friends and
family. It kinda' goes with the turf when you are a young
magician who is eager to show off his talents.
I
consider the current wave of independent one/two man magic
plays and performances in L.A. a very healthy and exciting
new direction for the magical arts. Combined with the national
development of weekly magic events such as New York's Monday
Night Magic, Boston's Mystery Lounge, San Francisco's Magic
Dinner Theatre and Santa Monica's Magicopolis; a whole new
vitality is being breathed into the magic scene.
During
the '70s and 80's my wife and I were always finding suitable
rooms in Los Angeles and producing special one-night events
that featured my often rather eccentric magic offerings.
The first of our L.A. shows was in 1978 when we presented
a Buddy Holly séance at the Ice House in Pasadena.
It was a fun evening and got us rolling in the right direction.
Lenny Bruce and Elvis séances were to follow in the
very near future.
Throughout
the '80s we presented long form editions of my show on multiple
occasions in other L.A. clubs including; The Horn, Carlos
& Charlie's (now The House of Blues), The Playboy Club,
The Laugh Factory, The L.A. Cabaret and The Laugh Stop.
In fact for a while, every Monday, we transformed The Laugh
Stop in Newport Beach into the Magic Stop. We replaced the
pictures of comedians with photos of magicians and added
a couple of close up tables and created a fun magic event.
In
fact it was the success of our transformation of the Laugh
Stop into a magic venue, on its dark night, that gave Michael
Callie his first thought of building the rather nifty Magic
Island in Newport Beach and later in Houston. He was amazed
to see his comedy room packed out every Monday, that and
a couple of visits to the Magic Castle convinced him that
there was a real commercial potential in magic as an entertainment
product.
During
the '80s I spent a great many weeks headlining in many different
comedy clubs in Las Vegas. It was during a one week gig
performing at the Maxim Hotel that the room manager Cazzy
Cadwell and I dreamt up the idea of me presenting a one-man
magic show in the afternoons. The only afternoon entertainment
precedent in town was a fairly tacky mini production show
entitled Viva Las Vegas that presented shows at 2.00 and
3.00 pm week.
We
met with a great deal of skepticism about the prospect of
paying audiences turning out for our bare bones afternoon
show. Heck, the show was just myself doing an hour's worth
of my comedy show. I was however lucky enough to have a
very fine director to convert my act into a full scale theatrical
show, his name was Tony Shepherd and a great deal of our
success was due to the efforts of both Tony and my brilliant
publicist, the late Florence Troutman.
Amazingly
enough our show was packed out from the first week of our
run. It had always been my theory that if a day-show in
Branson could bring in an audience then the concept would
work just as well in Las Vegas. My initial two-month booking
ended up stretching out to a run of nearly five years, and
I only decided to call it quits when I discovered the hotel
was closing. I wasn't unduly upset as it had been an exhausting
run performing two sixty-minute shows a day, six days a
week, 48 weeks a year for nearly five years. I was actually
delighted to return to my corporate and cruise gigs.
One
of the toughest things we had to do to keep the show running
smoothly was schedule a suitable replacement for my vacation
weeks. Many magicians considered the two one-hour sets at
1.00 and 3.00 to be a tough gig! Amongst those who subbed
for me were Johnny Thompson, Tom Mullica and Paul Kozak.
Then we had a stroke of luck when Mac King filled in for
a week, it was instantly clear that he was a perfect match
for that market/time slot, and instantly he became my perfect
wingman. After I finished my run, Mac glided right into
the slot and when the Maxim finally closed its doors he
continued with the format at Harrah's. Many years later
his show is still running there and has proven to be a huge
success. Mac has my utmost respect not just for his talent
but his stamina!
As
in most of my columns in Magic New Zealand there is something
of a hidden message here. One of the joys in being a magician
is going out and finding a venue where you can slot into
their schedule. Whether it is for a night, a week or multiple
years it is quite possible to create your own breaks and
opportunities in our business. Make the most of the showrooms
that already exist in your neighborhood and present them
with a package that really makes sense and will work for
both yourself and them. Learn to create a win/win scenario
and you will never be short of a way to advance your career,
make a little money and have some fun!

9. Festival Myths - #360 - Kyle Peron
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kyle Peron (US)
magic4u02@aol.com
http://www.facebook.com/perondesign
http://www.kpmagicproducts.com
Many
entertainers never get into the festival market because
of fears and beliefs that are often misunderstood and not
accurate. These are what I like to call "festival myths".
These are beliefs that entertainers have that hinder them
from going into this market or exploring it further. In
this chapter, I hope to go over a few of the more common
myths that are associated with festivals and try to explain
the meaning behind them and what I have found to be true.
1)
There just are not any festivals in my area.
I have found that this myth is completely false no matter
what area of the country you live in or even what country
you are from. This is a common belief that hinders entertainers
from making a jump into a great market that might be just
perfect for their style of entertainment.
The
key to solving this myth is to do some simple research.
I am sure you will find there are many more festivals and
events out there you might be aware of. I certainly know
this was the case when I started looking into this market
myself.
I
only knew of 3 large ones. What I found out was that every
township in my area had at least 3 festivals each year.
They all had a summer or spring street festival and they
all usually had a fall festival of some sorts. Some of them
had even more. This opened my eyes to realizing there was
a huge amount of work that I could tap into if I only researched
it and marketed to it.
Let
us do some simple math. Right now think of every township
in your general location. Let us say you can think of 15
of them off the top of your head. If our research proves
that every township has at least 3 festival style events
each year, then we are safe to say that we can multiply
our 15 townships by 3 festivals each. This means that just
off the top of your head, and in less than a minute, you
have realized the potential for 45 festival gigs you could
very well be working. If you really sit down and study it,
the numbers are quite staggering.
I
am sure it may be a bit different out your way, but I think
if you research it more, you may find there is a lot more
out there then you first thought. Give it a try as it will
only cost you time. I am sure you will realize that doing
my simple test above and doing some research online, or
at your local library or tourist bureau, you will find that
the potential for working many festivals truly is there
for the taking.
2)
Festivals only hire magicians with illusions.
You really do not have to own or perform illusions when
doing or working a festival. I know this to be the case
over my many years of experience in offering family-style
entertainment for the many festivals my wife and I have
worked. This is a myth that often gets misunderstood.
Festivals
do not require illusions at all. You do not have to feel
that in order to work festivals you must do illusions. I
have worked many festivals without them and have done very
well. The festivals want you to draw a crowd and to keep
the folks their happy and entertained. That is their bottom
line solution they want you to provide for them. You can
do this with or without illusions.
3)
Festivals always give you what you want.
Many entertainers are under the assumption that because
you are an entertainer, you will get everything you want
and ask for; from a great stage to great parking. This is
a total myth and is often not the case at all. In many instances,
you know more about how to run a festival and the entertainment
area then they do. This is not a bad thing, because you
can use this to offer them solutions they have not even
thought of. By listening to them, you can provide solutions
and benefits that meet their direct need and may also benefit
you in the long run.
4)
Festivals always give you a great stage.
Through my vast experience, I can tell you that this is
very much a myth. You will find that festivals very often
provide you with anything from a street corner to a full
indoor stage and everything in between. The reason for this
could be based upon the festival's budget and the confusion
happens because the festival and the performer have very
different interpretations of just what the word "stage"
means. As a festival performer, you will learn to adapt
to your situations. We will talk more about stages and staging
later in the book.
5)
Festivals always give you great sound and provide it for
you.
This too is a myth and like stages, festival sound can vary
from providing nothing at all to actually having a sound
person ready for your show. Know and learn sound and about
sound equipment and you will be able to know what exact
questions to ask that specifically meet the requirements
for your own show. Many systems that people will use at
festivals are just not good quality. Remember, if the audience
cannot hear you, there is no use even performing.
6)
Festivals always have great crowds and fantastic audiences.
Well, this is only partially true. Festivals vary in size
from small local community festivals to larger 2 day events
with over 50,000 people. Yes, you will have fairly nice
crowds, but keep in mind this also depends on just how good
your show is and also on where your performance area is
located within the festival. You also must remember that
there are a lot of distractions and events going on at the
festival. Each one of these is bidding for your audience's
time. You want to make your show fun, magical and visual
to get people to stop, watch and stay with your show. I
have ways in which you can make sure you draw a big crowd
no matter where you are located within a festival. We will
discuss more on this in a later chapter.
So
how do we learn to alleviate these problems and pitfalls
from happening? Well let me go over a few rules of thumb
that I use that have worked great for me and maybe some
of you are using as well.
-
Listen: This sounds funny but a common problem is that many
performers always sell, sell to the prospect or client and
never truly listen. They are so hung up on their show and
needs that they forget to be a solutions provider to the
client.
If
you stop to listen to them and even ask them what problems
are they running into that you can help them with, they
will gladly tell you. They will probably be delighted to
know someone cares about their needs and will be a golden
opportunity for you to be able to help yourself out by helping
them meet and solve their problems.
Self-Contained:
I have learned to always keep my show 100% self-contained.
This means that I think of my shows as if the client has
absolutely nothing and is providing me with nothing. If
I think in this way, I know that I can and will ALWAYS be
ready for any set up or situation I run into.
This
means I carry my own sound system with mics and lapels and
patch cords to patch into any and all sound systems I run
into. It also means I carry all props and signs and advertising
for my own show. By always carrying this with me, I know
I never have a problem with working with a bad sound system
because I am always ready and have my own to work with.
-
Never Assume: Never assume that any festival knows what
they are doing. The fact is, some will and some will not.
You never can be quite sure so never get into the assumption
mode. Always ask very detailed questions and if the person
does not know, ask kindly if you can talk with the sound
person for the day and get a direct contact with that person.
It works better when there are no assumptions being made.
-
You're in Control: This means that it is your show you are
putting on and so you need to make sure your show and you
are in control at all times. You learn to adapt your show
to handle different situations and also learn ways in which
to draw up a crowd no matter where you are located at a
festival.
**
I have a new book out I would like you to know about all
about working the Festival market. If you would like additional
and detailed information on this topic, please see my book/ebook
