Nice to read in the latest Stevens Magic News Letter:
"There must be something in the water there as relative
to its size, New Zealand has to have the highest proportional
ratio of any other country with well-known luminaries such
as Richard Webster, Wayne Rogers, Paul Romhany, Alan Watson
and others."

2. FISM - Obie O'Brien
--------------------------------------------
Message by Joan Caesar (Canada)
Obie
O'Brien has attended 13 straight FISM conventions, the first
in Vienna in 1976. He is one of the only North American
to have been to that many FISMs. He was originally attracted
to FISM because he wanted to see Juan Tamariz, Fred Kaps,
Pat Page, Billy McComb and Asconia all of whom would be
there and were mentioned in many magazines as being the
top performers in the world. He is looking forward to his
14th FISM in Rimini, Italy again to see top performers,
and also to spend time with friends.
FISM,
especially the competition is important to experience, he
says, because registrants are able to see best magicians
in the world, all at one time, before they become famous.
North Americans particularly, can judge the quality of competitors
in the rest of the world all in one go. It's a good yardstick
with which to judge our level against the world.
Obie
has visited northern Italy several times and is looking
forward to seeing more of this wonderful country. Interested
in history, he is anxious to see the historical Tiberio
Bridge and other important places of interest to World War
2 buffs that are in Rimini.
He
has judged both stage and close-up at more than 15 different
conventions around the world, most more than once. Obie
was a FISM judge three times. He was the Close-Up Coordinator
for the 2009 FISM World Championships of Magic in Beijing
China, FISM 2012 in Blackpool England & 2011 FISM European
Championships in England. He will have the same position
in Rimini.
Obie
is the founder and President of the 4F close-up convention
in the United States. 2015 marks the 45th occurrence of
this April convention, where people from 5 continents, comprising
18-20 different countries come each year to perform and
socialize with like-minded magicians. He is always scouting
for good talent to invite to 4F and expects to find a multitude
of talent at FISM.
Obie
is the FISM representative for the IBM.

4. The Magic Word Podcast #219 - Lee Earle - Clear Vision
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star
Lee
Earle has spent a lifetime as a magician and mentalist.
His path took him from performing comedy magic on the Recreational
Vehicle Park circuit then evolving to mentalism. For three
years he produced and performed séances in a show
entitled "Manifestations" in Phoenix, Arizona.
He became partners with Larry Becker and between them manufactured
and marketed products for the mentalist under their company
name, "Mentalism Unlimited".
Now
in his 70's, Lee traveled across the U.S. for his "Farewell
Lecture Tour" and stopped in Houston where we sat down
to talk about his career. Along the way, Lee tells us a
lot of interesting stories as well as talking about magic
versus mentalism all the while dropping gems of wisdom along
the way.
This
week there is a bonus audio file at the bottom of the blog
at http://themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/lee-earle
where you can get additional content. Available on through
Spreaker via the blog, Lee talks about the importance of
using sound in your show, the three support columns of mentalism,
and more content that he shared during his formal lecture.
You can read the blog, see some photos, listen online or
download the MP3 file at: http://themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/lee-earle
You can listen to the podcast through iTunes, Stitcher,
Tunein or Feedpress, too.
This
week a special thanks goes out to longtime supporter John
Graybeal. After making individual donations, he converted
to becoming an ongoing supporter of The Magic Word by pledging
his financial support through Patreon. Thank you, John,
for your commitment and for helping us to defray the monthly
production costs associated with producing this podcast.
It is because of supporters like you that The Magic Word
will continue. To learn more about how you can join the
many others like you who enjoy The Magic Word, please take
three minutes to watch the video at: http://www.patreon.com/TheMagicWord

I genuinely appreciate every listener who subscribes to
the podcast. Thanks for listening.
Next
week I head to Hollywood, California where I plan to record
more great chats with interesting magicians. Watch and listen
next week for Part One of My Week At The Magic Castle 2015.

5. Houdini Film Restored
--------------------------------------------
Message by George Schindler (US)
The
Society of American Magicians will bring Past National President
Harry Houdini back to its National Convention by presenting
the long-lost Harry Houdini classic movie The Grim Game
to the Marriott Hotel Downtown in Philadelphia (July 1-4)
.
This
1919 film is considered Houdini's best and was thought to
be lost to time until a complete print was recently rediscovered
and brought to Turner Classic Movies for restoration. The
last surviving copy obtained from the Houdini Estate in
1947 was owned by the late Larry Weeks who sold it to TCM.
The silent era will be screened with a new musical score.
The
owners of the Houdini Museum in Scranton, PA will be on
hand at the event to answer questions on the history of
the restoration. Only convention registrants will be able
to see this film.

6. Quarter Of A Million Dollars For Excellence In Magic!
--------------------------------------------
Message by Julie Eng (Canada)
Magicana
is pleased to announce on behalf of the Slaight Family Foundation
the creation of the Allan Slaight Awards to recognize outstanding
achievement in the pursuit of the impossible.
Initiated
by the Slaight Family Foundation to honour Canadian media
mogul and philanthropist Allan Slaight, and his lifelong
passion for and contribution to magic, Magicana will distribute,
on behalf of the Slaight Family Foundation $250,000, over
five years, to recognize excellence in magic.
The
Allan Slaight Awards will be distributed across five categories:
Sharing Wonder (Live or Digital), Sharing Secrets, International
Rising Star, Canadian Rising Star, and Lifetime Achievement.
The
Sharing Wonder category will recognize the most innovative
performance of magic over the past calendar year, either
in live performance or a digital medium. The goal is to
recognize exceptional performances, by exceptional artists.
Sharing
Secrets will recognize the most exceptional creative, innovative
or well-presented (live, in print, or digital) works that
advance the study of magic as a performing art. The focus
will be on the techniques that magicians use or can use
to advance the work. Works related to the history of magic
and its practitioners will also be considered in this category.
The International Rising Star award will recognize emerging
talent, while a separate award will be given to an emerging
Canadian talent.
A
Lifetime Award will recognize a person, company or organization
that has demonstrated a commitment to advancing magic as
a performing art, and made major contributions to that goal
throughout their lifetime.
The
word "magic" includes ancillary subjects such
as illusions, mentalism and sleight-of hand, and any other
branch that can be considered to fall under the broad rubric
of magic.
The Allan Slaight Awards are international in scope. Magicana
will accept submissions from performers, creators, writers,
designers, and anyone else with an interest in magic, wherever
they reside or perform. One can submit his or her own work
for consideration, or the work of any other individual or
organization. The portal for submitting works will be added
to the Magicana website this summer so that works created
in 2015 can be submitted for consideration.
Magicana
will publish and promote a "Long List" of submissions
under consideration with, where possible, links to those
submissions. A panel of three independent judges will review
the Long List in each category, and reduce the list to a
"Short List" of potential recipients. The judges
will then determine a final recipient in each category.
Winners
will be announced annually and awarded with the following
amounts:
Lifetime Achievement - $15,000
Sharing Wonder - $15,000
Sharing Secrets - $10,000
International Rising - $5,000
Canadian Rising - $5,000
The inaugural recipients (for work completed in 2014) will
be announced in Toronto on June 27, 2014.
Details
can be found on our website: www.magicana.com/awards

8. Remarkable Magic #387 - Nick Lewin

Message by Nick Lewin (US)
What's
coming up!
I
was delighted to get so many responses to my story last
week about that wonderful English magician David Nixon.
I was pleased to learn how many other performers held him
in equally high regard. My friend Tim Glander reminded me
that an excellent book was written about Nixon by Dr. Eddie
Dawes called, "Entertainer: With a Magic Touch!"
For those of you wanting to learn more about David Nixon
you can order the book from Amazon.
I
always enjoy the chance to meet some of my readers in person
rather than just over the Internet! I have a few shows and
dates coming up that I wanted to mention. If you have a
chance to stop by please make sure you take the time to
say a big old Texan "Howdy."
On
April 23rd I will be performing at a really neat theatre
in Austin called "The North Door." The show is
called "Magic Hour" and is produced by my friend
Patrick Terry, who will be performing along with Andrew
Goldenhersh and myself. The evening is to be hosted by comedian
Cami Alys. The show kicks off at 8.00pm and is billed as
an evening with magic, comedy, pizza and beer. That sounds
perfectly suited to my tastes! Tickets cost $20 in advance
and full details can be found at http://www.thenorthdoor.com
I
am a big fan of Goldenhersh and his unique brand of magic
and am really looking forward to working with him. Patrick
is an excellent magician/mentalist who is starting to make
quite a name for himself. It should be a really fun event
for our audience. If you live in the Austin area stop on
by for the fun.
On
April 28th I am lecturing for IBM Ring 313 (the John Fedko
Ring) in Irvine, California. I have been having a great
deal of success and getting some wonderful reactions with
my lecture and I'm looking forward to this event keenly.
The evening kicks off at 6.00pm with my lecture scheduled
for shortly after 7.00pm. Admission is free for members
and guests are asked for a $10 donation. You can get full
details about the on Ring 313's website at www.ring313.org/
My
lecture teaches some very cool tricks and then shows how
to blend them into a well-balanced show. I usually also
find time to tell some great stories about my mentors Billy
McComb, Ken Brooke and Maurice Fogel.
On
the evening of the 29th of April I will be enjoying an all
to rare evening at the Magic Castle, where I will be socializing
with my dear friend Piet Paulo. I hope to meet up with some
of my LA buddies during the evening. If you are around come
by and say "Hi." I only seem to average a couple
of visits a year to the Castle and I'm looking forward to
catching up with as many friends as possible!
On
May 2nd I will be performing back home in Austin in "Magic
At The Capital" at the historic Scottish Rite Theatre.
The event is presented by IBM Ring 60, as a fundraiser for
the upcoming TAOM convention in Austin. The show features
a fine group of performers including, Ian Varella, Kent
Cummins, Peter Hinrichs, Jeff Hapke and Scott & Kathy
Wells. The show begins at 8.00pm and costs $15 for Children
and $20 for adults. There is another, even family friendlier
show at 3.30pm on the day.
This
is magic the way it was supposed to be enjoyed, live and
in a glorious 100-year old vaudeville theatre! Last year
both shows were totally sold out so I recommend you apply
for your tickets ASAP. Visit the website http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/1380923
to get further details or order your tickets.
In
between all these shows and lectures I am putting the finishing
touches to our newest release to the magic world "Gypsy
Yarn," which should cause quite a stir amongst performers
who value extremely practical, visual and strong material.
I have gone to enormous lengths to make sure that this release
is something very special. This effect has been a feature
of my show for forty years and I wanted to get every detail
exactly right before marketing it. I truly believe I have!

9. Festivals - Advertising - #359 - Kyle Peron
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kyle Peron (US)
magic4u02@aol.com
http://www.facebook.com/perondesign
http://www.kpmagicproducts.com
Part
of being a success at working festivals is the ability to
build relationships with the client/s and having them really
see the value that you give to them. You want to be a solutions
provider and not just an entertainer. The more problems
you can solve for them, the more your perceived value grows
in their minds.
Part
of building this relationship is having them see large crowds
at your shows and many happy and smiling patrons. They want
their festival guests to be having a great time. A large
and happy crowd reacting favorably to what you are doing
gets back to the client really fast.
So
what are ways in which to ensure large crowds at your festival
shows? Well one is simply advertising your appearance at
the festival. Many entertainers make 2 assumptions when
it comes to festival advertising and promotion. They feel
like 1) it will be done entirely by the festival itself
and they will advertise your appearance there and 2) that
they are not allowed to help advertise their appearance.
Let
me talk a bit about both if I can. The first rule of thumb
is to never assume anything when it comes to working festivals.
This simply means always ask questions and always find out
the answers to questions you have.
Sometimes
festivals will indeed promote your appearance and will do
a fine job of doing so. Some will not advertise you much
at all and others may just state that a "magician"
or a "juggler" will be appearing but not state
your stage name etc.
This
is natural to happen as all festivals are different and
they handle advertising and promotion different as well.
One of the best things you can do for yourself is to offer
to help make their job easier by providing them with information,
photos, bios, web art, logos and anything you feel they
can utilize. By doing so, you are showing them you are a
professional, you are helping them tremendously and you
are ensuring a better chance that you will be advertised
properly.
If
you want to start to advertise yourself and your appearance
at the festival, it usually is never a problem. Just make
sure to touch base with your festival client ahead of time.
Ask them that you would like to help get the word out about
their festival and your appearance there and if that would
be OK with them.
It
is a win-win situation for them and so is usually never
a problem at all. Just always ask permission ahead of time
before you begin. In this way they know you are doing it,
can assist you with proper information and they get to see
the value you are giving to them.
One
of the best ways to advertise your appearance at the festival
is through a FREE method called online community calendars.
Many communities and municipalities have community based
websites. These websites are geared at letting people in
their communities know about important information.
As
a part of these community based websites, they usually will
have a calendar of events section. These calendars are set
up in such a way that anyone can freely post events and
community events to the calendar. It is usually done through
an online form page. Just enter in your information and
click the button and you are one.
The
beauty of this is that they are free of charge and can be
done quickly. There are a lot of them and you can find them
easily by doing Google searches for "Community Calendar
(town name)" or with a keyword such as "Calendar
of Events (township)". With a little Google searching,
you can find numerous online calendars to be able to place
your event information.
It
is a quick and easy way to get your information out there
to a vast audience who usually check the calendars for things
to do for their families.

I have a new book out I would like you to know about all
about working the Festival market. If you would like additional

13. Innovention Convention
--------------------------------------------
Message by Paul Stone
The
Innovention Convention which will be taking place in Liverpool,
England from 14 - 16 July is definitely one of the best
kept secrets in magic. We have carefully limited the amount
of advertising and publicising of this very unique event
because we are closing registrations when we reach the magic
number of 100 attendees. We have done this because we want
everyone who registers to be treated like a VIP and be guaranteed
a great seat for every session and show.
At the Innovention there will be an unrivalled opportunity
to spend quality time with all the performers, speakers,
and magic stars. The line-up of talent is top class with
our major headliner Jeff Hobson taking a rare few days away
from the Illusionists Show which is currently touring the
USA and building up to a return booking on Broadway. This
will be Jeff's only magic convention appearance in 2015.
A few of the other performers not only appearing on stage
but also taking in part in our 'Pros Speak' sessions are
Michael Goudeau, ( Guest Star for over 5000 shows in Lance
Burton's Fabulous show in Las Vegas ), Paul Zerdin ( four
time Royal Variety Show Star ), Sos & Victoria and Graham
P Jolley. John Fealey, a terrific comedy performer will
be there too and Bob Kohler is making only his second appearance
in UK in 15 years.
We are still planning to announce a couple more exciting
names, but we can tell you that Wayne Dobson, Mark Raffles,
Geoff Ray, Paul Ray, David Hemingway, Don Bevan, Keith &
Pam Cooper and Gerry Cottle will all be at the Innovention
too, so this really is a wonderful chance to rub shoulders
and spend quality time with many of magic's legendary names.
If you are a performer much of the emphasis of the Innovention
will be to help you to become a better and more successful
entertainer. The wealth of performing experience that the
artists appearing at the Innovention have to share with
those attending is unrivalled at any magic convention and
gained from literally thousands of stage and cabaret shows
all over the world.
The two Innovention venues are both unique too. The Hard
Day's Night Hotel and the Epstein Theatre are both located
right in the heart of Liverpool's City Centre, which is
now one of the most exciting cities in Europe to visit,
and it is particularly vibrant in July.
We are moving closer to 100 registrations so if you don't
want to miss out then go to www.innoventionliverpool.com
and register now before it is too late. And if you move
fast you can take advantage of a great offer too as the
website quotes a figure of 175 GB Pounds but until the end
of April when you register you will only be charged the
special pre-registration price of 155 GB Pounds.

16. The S.A.M. Convention Dealer's Room Will Be Special
--------------------------------------------
Message by Dal Sanders M.I.M.C. With Gold Star
The
Society of American Magicians have always had a close relationship
with magic dealers and magic shops. In fact the S.A.M. was
founded in the legendary Martinka's Magic shop in New York
City on May 10, 1902. The 2014 S.A.M. Convention in Philadelphia
is going acknowledge and honor that history by naming the
Dealers Room "Martinka's Magic Shop".
The dealers will come from around the world and include
MagicBase Pro - Bob Miller Magic, from Minnesota, Losander
and Tricksupply.com from Las Vegas, Joe Mogar and Meir Yedid
Magic from New Jersey, Zanadu - P&L Magic from Connecticut,
Penguin Magic from Indiana, Bob Little - Wild Man Wild,
SWC Magic and Flip Disc Production from Pennsylvania, BJW
Magical Jewelers from Michigan, Magic Art Studio from Massachusetts,
Card Shark from Germany, Cave of Wonders Magic from Texas,
John A. Greget Magic Lists from Arizona, Mike's Magic from
Virginia, Magic Backdrops from North Carolina, Happie Amp
and Daytona Magic from
well Florida.
We are even recreating Martinka's Back Room for this convention.
When you bought something at that iconic magic store you
would be ushered into the back room for instruction. We
will have a private back room for our Martinka's too. Imagine
getting the chance to learn from Losander the intricacies
of that floating table that you bought or having personal
instructions from Bob Little, Joe Mogar or Meir Yedid. Without
a doubt, this is not going to be an average "convention
dealer's room". The S.A.M. Convention will give you
Martinka's Magic Shop.
