2. FISM - Transportation In Rimini
--------------------------------------------
Message by Joan Caesar (Canada)
Travelling
from your hotel to the FISM venue will be easy. Many of
you will enjoy a morning walk through the park that stretches
from many of the hotel locations to the Palacongressi venue.
Others may prefer the public and well operated frequent
bus service. Busses will also take you to the other interesting
parts of Rimini you should make time to see while you're
there. From your hotel to the Palacongressi you can most
likely take bus no 7, bus no 18 or bus no 19, but it's best
to check with your hotel for details.
Public
transport in Rimini is provided by a city-operated bus service,
called TRAM, linking Rimini's urban area with the suburban
and outlying areas in Rimini province. The route of interest
to most visitors is the one that operates through the city
centre and continues along the beachfront, and on to Bellariva,
Marebello, Rivazzurra and Miramare. In all, there are 15
routes that comprise a network linking all corners of metropolitan
Rimini, and all making a stop at the city's rail station.
If
you're lucky, your hotel might offer you a free bicycle
during your stay. Mine did.
Rimini has a 1.3 million square metre large system of parks
and gardens inside the city, and a total of 2.8 million
square metres of green areas inside the city limits, including
river parks, sport facilities and natural areas. The city's
park system include a series of large urban parks, created
along the old riverbeds of Marecchia and Ausa Rivers.
In
Rimini there are about 42,000 public trees, belonging to
190 different species, predominantly linden, planes, maples,
poplars, pines and oaks. Twenty three of the oldest trees
are protected as "monumental trees" for their
age and their naturalistic value. They include the plane
of piazza Malatesta, the downy oak of Giovanni Paolo II
Park, the cypresses of Sant'Agostino, the elm of Viale Vespucci
and the linden trees of San Fortunato.
The city's cycling network was established inside the main
parks and boulevards, linking the most important monuments,
tourist attractions, beaches, and meeting places.

Magician
David Copperfield Performs His Best Trick Ever By Making
One Boy's Final Wish Come True
Magician
David Copperfield has wowed millions through his magic shows,
but his best trick of all may have been the way that he
made a wish come true for one special boy.
10-year-old
Aiden Davis has been battling cancer since he was three
years old. With a terminal diagnosis, Aiden made up a bucket
list. The last thing on it? To see David Copperfield perform.
A
social media campaign helped Copperfield learn about Aiden's
wish, and the Las Vegas magician went about fulfilling Aiden's
wish, and then some. He flew Aiden and his family to Las
Vegas and surprised them at their hotel room.
An
excited Aiden got his first limo ride on the way to another
first for both Aiden and David - a first picture in front
of the famous Las Vegas sign.
After
a bit more Vegas sightseeing, Copperfield took Aiden to
a place that is sure to appeal to any lover of magic
his "secret lair," a museum dedicated to the history
of magic.
Finally,
there was the show. But Aiden didn't just get to watch.
He got a bit of time in the spotlight and the best seat
in the house.
As
for Copperfield, he ends by giving thanks for Aiden's visit,
as this extraordinary young boy has been an example of strength
and courage for him and all who have been fortunate enough
to meet him.

5. The Magic Word Podcast - Martin Cox - How Bad Could It
Be?
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star
Sometimes
despite all you planning and rehearsal, magic goes wrong.
And what makes it worse is when someone is filming you and
posts it to YouTube. Such was the case for Martin Cox several
years ago when he was performing the Smash and Stab that
resulted in a volunteer's hand getting impaled.
On
this week's The Magic Word Podcast we talk with Martin Cox,
the magician in the video, about what happened and the subsequent
follow-up today. But there is so much more to Martin and
the first half of our one hour chat is about magic on television
and how it impacts the rest of us, approaching tables, working
with talkative adults in the back of the room during birthday
parties, the difference in timing in the U.S. vx. The U.K.,
developing your character, and much, much more. This is
a pretty jam-packed podcast that I'm certain you'll enjoy.
You
can read the blog, watch the video of "magic gone bad",

6. More Talent At SAM Philadelphia Convention
--------------------------------------------
Message by Mark Weidhaas (US)
Just
added to the amazing lineup of magic stars is magical instructor,
Hiawatha Johnson, Jr. and comedy magician, Mike Bent.
Hiawatha Johnson, Jr. is an accomplished magician, actor,
director, and teacher. He teaches dance at Randolph College,
and has been one of the main instructors at Tannen's Magic
Camp, having trained such magicians as David Blaine, Adrian
Brody, and Darren Romeo.
As a teenager, Mike Bent worked for Ray Goulet at the Magic
Art Studio in Watertown, MA. By the time he graduated from
Emerson College, where he studied children's writing, he
was performing his original magic and comedy routine at
clubs and colleges throughout the country. This led to a
performance at the prestigious Montreal Comedy Festival,
and numerous television appearances on HBO, Showtime, ABC,
NBC, CBS, Comedy Central and A&E. Per M-U-M, "There
is no one in the universe that creates magic routines and
comedy sight gags as novel and astonishing as Mike does.
Throughout the hilarity, the magic he performs is strong:
he doesn't let the gags get in the way of the mystery."
Philadelphia and the SAM convention is a family destination
for all. While the magician in your family is learning from
the experts, the non-magician will be entertained with our
excellent shows and contests. Philadelphia offers a grand
vacation for your entire family. Where's the best place
to celebrate July 4th? The place it all began: Philadelphia.
The
convention hotel is located downtown next to the famous
Reading Terminal Market, the famous indoor foodie paradise.
The Marriott Philadelphia Downtown is located at 1201 Market
Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 19107.
The
July 1-4, 2015 S.A.M. Convention registration and hotel

7. Remarkable Magic #383 - Nick Lewin
--------------------------------------------
Message by Nick Lewin (US)
Better
safe than sorry. Trust Me!
A
couple of years ago my company started to market a really
great microphone holder. It fits any sized mic and is easily
adjustable to be the perfect distance from your mouth. Which
is exactly one palm's width below your chin. It even comes
in a colorful silk bag so that it doesn't get lost in dark
backstage areas. It is made in the USA, and I am very proud
of it! Whenever you need a "hands free" mic experience
this product gets the job done perfectly---no matter what
microphone you are given to work with.
I
am fully aware that in this day and age most savvy pros
carry their own wireless microphones. I certainly do, it
is in many people's opinion the best available a Countryman
E6 Isomax microphone. However, inside its carrying case
I keep one of my microphone holders that I slip on my neck
behind my shirt just prior to showtime. I suggest doing
this on my website and had to chuckle about how many working
pros instantly and fully understood how vital this precaution
can be.
Last
night was one of those shows in a blue moon when this procedure
really paid off. My technical rehearsal in the afternoon
went great and my microphone sounded great. The backstage
sound check just prior to showtime was perfect. However,
the moment I opened my mouth for the first time onstage
all hell broke loose. There were enough squawks, shrieks
and loud electronic noises to scare a heavy metal band!
The backstage tech brought out a replacement transmitter/mic
for me to switch out, but having done so the same problem
repeated itself. It was the most painful way to spend that
all-important first four minutes of a show that you can
imagine.
After
doing all the usual lines, "How is that new sound equipment
from McDonald's working out for you guys?" etc. etc.
I instructed the techie to fetch me a hand held microphone.
I then flipped out my microphone holder from under my shirt
and single handedly placed the hand held wireless mic into
it. It is such an unobtrusive unit that many people, including
my sound guy, had no idea how the microphone so effortlessly
remained suspended there! I received a big round of applause
from the audience and it saved the day. The show began with
a nightmare opening and then went on to receive a standing
ovation at the end of my performance. I was never a boy
scout but I do revere their motto of "Be Prepared!"
Just
for the hell of it, let me add that everything I use in
my act such as lighters, pens, cards, and small props has
a duplicate item easily at hand in my case. Some items that
can't be easily duplicated if they are knocked over or broken
have entire additional tricks available on hand to replace
them. I can't begin to tell you how many times this has
smoothed out a potentially ugly moment in the show.
Even
when things go as smoothly as you could wish the sense of
confidence and ease of mind that this kind of preparation
gives you is astounding. There are so many other things
that can potentially go wrong when performing a magic show
why not eliminate the obvious ones right from the start.
It could well do more to instill the contagious sense of
confidence you are grasping for than that expensive new
battery controlled prop that you are lusting after. You
know, the one that is going to thrust your act into overdrive
and propel you into the big time. As long as the battery
works!
It
is useful to make a very thorough list of everything you
use during your act and tape it to the inside of your working
case. You can then mentally tick off each item prior to
showtime, and this helps to ensure that unnecessary surprises
won't hijack you during your show. Performing to real live
audiences, instead of the mirror in your living room, can
throw many a twist and turn in your direction, without having
to worry about the ones you could have avoided with just
a little advance preparation.
Yes,
you can buy one of my newly designed and updated microphone
holders for 30 bucks from my website. In fact I suggest,
like a huge number of top pros, you do! I have no shame
or hesitancy in plugging it here-just yesterday it saved
my ass and it might well do the same for you.
However, even if you don't want to purchase an Ultimate
Microphone Holder you might want to reflect a little on
my other Real World words of advice, simple as they are,
it has taken me decades of performing to fully formulate
them!

8. Show Evaluation - #354 - Kyle Peron
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kyle Peron (US)
magic4u02@aol.com
http://www.facebook.com/perondesign
http://www.kpmagicproducts.com
As magicians we fall in love with our art. We enjoy the
creation of routines and of our shows. We love what we create
as if it is our own work of art or masterpiece. It is like
a painter loving a painting they just created. We crave
it and enjoy it and long to perform it and protect it.
But often times I think we get a bit carried away with this
notion and ideal. Often times we fall in love with our own
creations that we fail to see that as much as we love them,
they just are not playing for the audience. They are not
being enjoyed as they should be from the layperson.
Is it possible to love something so much that we become
blinded to see that something simply is not working? Do
we often shrug it off and blame everything and everyone
but ourselves?
I have seen too many magicians blame anything and everything
as to why something did not play or totally ignore it altogether.
If we are to grow ourselves and grow our art, don't we need
to be honest with ourselves? Don't we need to look hard
at what we do and constantly evaluate our acts, routines
and our shows we develop?
Magic should be an ongoing process of learning. Creation
of any art is through the process of constant change and
evaluation for improvement.
I think we often get so hung up on the idea of how much
time we spent on creating something that we are unwilling
to give it up even when the audience is telling us it does
not play and does not work. Your audience will tell you
everything if you tune into it.
But if they tell you, you must be willing to listen to them,
hear them and evaluate accordingly. We often fall so much
in love with ourselves that we are unwilling to change and
that is a shame.
It is ok to realize that an act, routine or show is not
working. It is ok to realize that something is missing the
mark. It is ok to say to yourself, "This just is not
working."
Get into the habit of listening to your audiences every
show. Get into a habit of evaluating your show on the way
home while it is fresh in your mind. As yourself, what went
right and what went wrong? Define for yourself how the audience
reacted during each routine. Did they enjoy it? Were there
dead spots? Does it need more comedy? Was the routine to
long? Was the show not structured properly?
This self-evaluation is so important. If you are a professional,
then being a pro means always bringing the level of your
show up. It means changing with the times and making sure
you are playing not you YOU but to the audience. After all
without your audience who are you really? Just a lonely
person on stage by him/herself.

9. Movie On The Life Of The Amazing Randi

Article forwarded on by Phillip Sandler (US)
A
Movie On The Life Of The Amazing Randi, A Magician, Escape
Artist And Skeptic
"The
public really doesn't listen when they're being told straightforward
facts," says the Amazing Randi. The magician, escape
artist and tiny lion of principled skepticism, now north
of 80, leans forward in a black chair, all knees and elbows
and Old Testament beard. If it weren't for that sharpie's
suit he's wearing, the kind that looks like it has face
cards slipped between its every seam, and he could be some
wise-wizard marionette rigged up by the Henson Workshop.
Randi
is dismayed, thinking of frauds he's exposed, truths he's
fought for, and the fact that America still hasn't run its
psychics and UFO abductees and flim-flam preachers out of
the country on a rail. "They would rather accept what
some charismatic character tells them than really think
about what the truth might be," Randi says. "They'd
rather have the romance and the lies."

11. Beginner's Guide To Comedy Writing Aimed At Magicians
--------------------------------------------
Message by James Ward jwemerald@btinternet.com (UK)
I've
just published a beginner's guide to comedy writing aimed
at magicians, entitled Sleightly Amusing. It's available
as a Kindle download via Amazon and also as a paperback
(Amazon and/or Lulu publishing).
Sleightly
Amusing is a beginner's guide to comedy writing aimed specifically
at the magician. Written by Magic Circle member, James Ward,
the book is divided into two sections. In the first, James
outlines a number of gag-writing formulae which should quickly
get your comedy writing up and running. The second section
contains over 400 jokes, patter and bits of business written
and compiled largely with the magician and/or magical compere
in mind.
Sleightly
Amusing concludes with a useful bibliography of comedy writing
books to take your gags to a higher level if you feel suitably
inspired. James is a published author, in both fiction and
magical fields (having contributed to Abra, The Magician,
Mystery, The Budget, The Linking Ring and two editions of
Mind Blasters). As well as scripting gags for, among others,
Freddie Starr, June Whitfield, Roy Hudd, Radio 2, Radio
4, the World Service, BBC1, ITV, S4C (Wales) and German
television, James has performed stand-up comedy across Yorkshire
and at the Edinburgh Fringe.
Sleightly
Amusing (approx. 80 pages) is available as a paperback priced
£5.99 (Amazon) and only £4.79 at www.lulupublishing.com.
It's
also available as a Kindle download (at £3.99), either
to your e-reader or via your free desktop/tablet/smartphone
application (for which, see, in the UK, for example: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/digital/fiona/kcp-landing-page).

14. Magic Returns to Cape Cod - April 9-12, 2015
--------------------------------------------
Message by Angelique Steelgrave
Convention Co-Producer
Just
a reminder that the 2nd Annual Oceanside Magic Invitational
convention is only 10 weeks away! Magicians of all levels,
magic lovers, hobbyists, collectors, students of magic...all
are invited. There's still time to register for this year's
event, which takes place
literally "Oceanside" at the beautiful Red Jacket
Beach Resort in South Yarmouth, MA, USA.
OMI
is a friendly, welcoming weekend of magic and fellowship,
featuring some of the brightest stars in the magic community.
Following the 1st Annual OMI last April, this new convention
was praised by virtually all of 2014's headliners and attendees,
and word has been spreading. Jay Scott Berry proclaimed
it "...quite simply one of the finest boutique conventions
in the world."
SAM
President Ice McDonald stated, "I had the best time
at OMI. Markus and Angelique, the organizers, gave everyone
who attended a wonderful experience. Go witness the Fun."
Craig
Dickson of Wizard Craft Magic had this to say: "When
I was SAM National President, I wrote a column entitled
'Straight from the Heart'. This testimonial certainly is.
We have been to just about every convention in the world
over the past 30+ years, and bigger is seldom better.
What
we seek is a place to meet new people, see some great magic,
learn, share, laugh, meet up with old friends, relax, and
be in a place we would like to go on a vacation, and is
offered at a price a family can afford. This has it all
and so much more. It is now in our top three, and I truly
mean that. You can tell when things are done for the money,
or done from the heart, with passion. OMI is one that is
truly from the heart and by those with a true passion for
magic. Do yourself a favor; make this a must attend, April
2015. Come home, and join the family. See you there...."
Past
SAM President Bruce Kalver described OMI as "an intimate
convention that is loaded with magic all the time. Something
for everyone. One of my favorites this year!"
OMI
2015 features Lectures from:
Kozmo,
Harry Allen, Losander, Ariann Black, Oscar Munoz, Andrew
Pinard, Becky Blaney, and Kevin Heller, with a special presentation/discussion
with Alan Wassilak, creator of the "Basil the Baffling
and Chloe" cartoon in M-U-M.
There
are also Stage and Cabaret Shows, all-you-can-eat buffet
lunch on Friday and Saturday, an Auction, raffles, and more.
OMI's
2015 Dealers include:
Daytona
Magic, Kozmo Magic/Reel Magic Magazine, Losander, Wizard
Craft Magic, Diamond's Magic, Tailored Magic, Custom Magic
Cards, and John Henry's World of Magic.
All
activities (except for the Saturday show) are right at the
Resort; the Saturday show is at the nearby Dennis-Yarmouth
High School auditorium. This show is also open to the public-for
those unable to make it to the whole convention, try to
catch the show!
Visit
www.oceansidemagic.com for Schedule, Performers/Shows, Dealers,
and Registration info ($190 Magician, $135 Companion; daily
rates also available). To reserve your room at the Resort,
call 1-800-CAPE-COD and mention OMI for the special rate
of $115 plus tax per night.
IBM
President Shawn Farquhar also praised OMI after his appearance
there: "I attend many conventions, and few really understand
that the number one thing we want from the convention is
community. We spend enough time alone in our rooms practicing
and many spend plenty of time performing. It is rare to
find a place where we can share and learn from each other
in a comfortable and friendly environment. The Steelgraves
really understand this fundamental need, and have created
a special place in the world of magic."
It
is indeed a special place! For all who missed it, here's
a short glimpse of last year's OMI: http://youtu.be/7gtSjS2Epck
Don't
miss this extraordinary event. Hope to see you on Cape Cod
in April.
