2. Paul Daniels, Part Two - The Rest Of The Stories
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star
In
this conclusion of our chat, Paul Daniels moves from talking
about his television years and focuses more on his more
recent activities including performing as Max Malini at
the Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, his DIY accident where
he cut off a part of his finger, his legacy put down on
a new DVD called "Bravura", his current "live"
touring show, and more. Paul continues to live a most magical
and wonderful life, full of fun and interesting stories
from his international exploits. I appreciate him sharing
many of them with me on this podcast.
You can watch a video presentation of his famous Chop Cup
routine, see some photos and listen to the podcast on The
Magic Word Podcast at: http://themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/paul-daniels-part-2
And while you're on the website, please take two more minutes
to watch my video at http://www.patreon.com/themagicword
where for as little as one dollar a month you can do a lot
to support The Magic Word. If all of the listeners would
just commit to any amount regardless of how small of a donation,
it would help a lot. All funds go to offset the expenses
to the domain provider to host the podcast, software and
hardware and travel to conventions to interview these magicians.
As an aside, I don't always use the income for direct podcast
expenses. For example, all income this past month received
through Patreon supporters was given to the Magi-Fest to
help pay for a youth registration who may not have otherwise
been financially able to attend. I wish we could have given
more for this worthy effort.

3. American Masters Airs On Friday
--------------------------------------------
Message by William Bowers (US)
Magician
Ricky Jay is profiled on American Masters airing Friday,
January 23rd at 9 pm
For
the first time in the series' 29-year history, American
Masters profiles a magician: the inimitable Ricky Jay, one
of the world's greatest conjurers, a best-selling author,
historian, actor and leading collector of antiquarian books
and artifacts.
Journey
through the mysterious world of sleight-of-hand through
new interviews with Jay, his friends and collaborators,
including writer/director David Mamet. Tracing the story
of Jay's achievement, beginning at age four as apprentice
to his grandfather Max Katz, an accomplished amateur magician,
the documentary features rare footage of some of the most
influential magicians of the 20th century: Cardini, Slydini,
Al Flosso, Dai Vernon and Charles Miller.
Narrated
by Dick Cavett, the film also features rare performance
footage from Jay's one-man shows and classic TV appearances,
among them a hilarious turn with Steve Martin on Dinah Shore's
1970s program. Filmmakers Molly Bernstein and Alan Edelstein
explore the arduous demands of the magician's craft, the
use of language and storytelling central to the art, and
this ancient tradition's future.
"Ricky Jay: Deceptive Practice" on American Masters
airs on Friday, January 23rd at 9 pm on channel 3.

Magic
goings on in Texas!
I
want to focus this week on some great upcoming magical events
right here in the Lone Star State of Texas. We have many
fine magicians living here and there are quite a few cool
events to add to the magical calendar. If you live in neighboring
states then maybe you might plan on visiting us to catch
them.
February
28th is the date of the annual world famous magic auction
here in Austin. It is always a red-letter day for lovers
of magic who want to acquire that exciting rare prop or
book. This event has been around for over three decades
and they certainly do it right. You can get all the information
to join in the fun from their website at http://austinmagicauction.com
I
am very excited to be part of "Magic at the Vortex"
a really great magical event on January 21st. Fellow Austinite
magician Patrick Terry has been quietly turning this wonderful
little theatre complex into a new home for quality magic.
This is his third event at The Vortex and the two of us
will be performing an evening of unique magic. Performing
a guest spot in the show will actually be my first public
appearance in my new hometown and I am greatly looking forward
to it.
Patrick
Terry is a very talented magician who is also developing
quite a reputation as a magic producer. Terry was born in
Americus, Georgia and in 2002 moved to New York where he
started to really hone his performing skills, working with
one of my favorite groups of magicians --- the Monday Night
Magic team. Terry also appeared in many college and private
venues where his audiences included many celebrities and
even some members of a Royal Family or two.
In
2013 Patrick created and produced the first of his acclaimed
"Wondershow" productions in New York City. The
show, a modern vaudevillian experience with an emphasis
on the magical arts, quickly became a NY favorite. It is
considered by many to be a major vision of the way our art
form can be successfully presented to modern audiences.
On
March 20th and 21st Terry will be bringing his "Wondershow"
to Austin for its premiere engagement outside the Big Apple.
This production will also be housed at the delightful Vortex
theatre, which should prove to be a perfect venue for the
event. A unique showroom, elegant bar and delicious food
from one of Austin's ubiquitous food trucks make this the
perfect spot to spread the "Wondershow" brand.
Flying
in to participate in "Wondershow," will be my
good friend the multi-talented Andrew Goldenhersh. In my
opinion Andrew is one of the brightest lights in the contemporary
magic scene and it is always a delight to watch him present
his quirky and singular magic. Also being imported for the
event will be Marcus Monroe --- a rock star amongst jugglers,
and Vinny DePonto, an innovative conjuror hailed by the
New York Daily News as "delightful and terrifying."
Celebrated storyteller Peter Aguero will be hosting the
event, which will feature local performers and musicians
to round out the two-hour show.
To
find out more details about "Wondershow" and purchase
tickets (it will certainly sell out) visit the Vortex website
at http://www.vortexrep.org If you would like to view a
brief video from Patrick Terry's last performance in the
theatre, check it out at http://vimeo.com/116761601 I will
look forward to bringing you an in depth review of "Wondershow"
at a future date.
Rounding
out some other upcoming Texas magic, I am delighted to say
I will be presenting my magic lecture in the cities of Houston
on 26th January and in San Antonio on the 28th January.
If you want more details of these events then contact me
at lewinenterprises@gmail.com and I can give you all the
facts and figures.
I
should not forget to mention that Austin will be hosting
this year's annual TAOM convention from September 4-7th.
This is always a fabulous event and 2015 has a great line
up scheduled which even includes the opportunity to visit
the world famous "Esther's Follies." If you haven't
visited "Esther's
" then you may have missed
the chance to watch the amazing Ray Anderson. As I have
stated in the past, Ray is not just an outstanding magical
performer but may very well be the funniest magician working
today. I attended his show four times last year and each
visit was an education and a delight.
My
message is simple, if you want to catch some great magic
this year, then "all y'all" should think about
a trip to Texas. Don't even get me started on the barbecue
food and breakfast tacos you can enjoy during your visit!

Message by Kyle Peron (US)

I am very fortunate I get to perform most all shows with
my wife. This week I had to do a solo show and it got me
thinking a lot in regards to load in, set up, show performance,
break down and load out. A lot of it I took for granted
because we are a team and I do not do many solo performances.
The more I thought about it, the more I started to come
up with a concept I have known for years but never really
put down on paper. I had always thought of it but never
to this level.
I feel it is very important to our marketing and to our
business model and I am sure it would be for yours as well.
I call it T.A.G. (TAG). TAG stands for Time At Gig. I started
to realize I needed to know what my TAG time was and break
down my TAG time. Learn from it and study it and determine
in what ways I can make it benefit me.
First, TAG time can be broken down to include the following.
Each associated with a time element to it:
- load in at the show
- set up of the show once items are at performance "staging
area"
- performance of the show
- any after show add ons you may do
- break down of the show
- load out and pack up
In essence it is the total time spent from the moment you
arrive at the event till you pull away to head home or to
another gig.
Each of these (listed above) has a time associated with
it. Each of these TAG times may also differ according to
what market I may be working. A birthday party show may
have a TAG time less than say a corporate illusion show.
For me this revelation of defining it in this fashion really
made sense to me. I now have TAG times for every market
I do and every show.
Now why is this important? Well for most of us, we would
love and have done multiple show days. If you do not know
your TAG time, then you spend an awkward moment trying to
calculate when you can get to another gig. You end up spending
too much time figuring it out and that makes for human error.
It also causes possible problems with a prospect because
you are not on top of your game.
If I know my Birthday Party TAG time is 2 hour (example),
then I know I can easily use that to determine exactly when
I am available to do the next event. This makes doing double
or triple book days much easier.
I want to always find a balance. This means keeping my TAG
time reasonable without losing any quality to the show I
present and perform. If I can lower my TAG time while maintaining
a quality show, then this becomes a winning formula for
me.
I then can perform more events in a day and earn more income
in the process. I do not have to spend a lot of time figuring
out when I can do the next event, because I would already
know.
This can also allow you to locate areas where you can make
improvements. If you realize your TAG time is too long,
then you can dissect it using the list above. Find which
area is taking the most time and then figure a way to cut
that time down.
This could simply mean a better way of packing up your equipment
so you make less trips to and from the car.
The TAG principle really does work and I encourage each
of you to give it a try. Write it down and go through it
for each of your markets and shows. Have it written down
and learn from it. I know you will not only find ways in
which to improve it, but it can also benefit your business
greatly.
If you do give TAG a try, I would love to hear from you.

9. In Conversation With Abigail Spinner McBride #1
--------------------------------------------
Message from Anthony Darkstone
Europe/USA
We
sometimes come across the term, "Renaissance Man."
It is used to describe extremely talented and remarkable
people. Abigail Spinner McBride is an extremely talented
and remarkable Lady. Therefore, I have every reason to describe
Abigail as a "Renaissance Lady." She is a Spiritual,
Esoteric, and Versatile Musician, Singer, Dancer, Percussionist,
Writer, Priestess, Businesswoman, and a Magicenne. And for
the three people reading this who may not have heard of
her, she is also the wife of Jeff McBride. Graceful and
beautiful both inside and visually, she not only excels
at all of the above, but is also a true inspiration to all
those who know and cherish her.
In
the course of my "In Conversation" article on
Jeff McBride, I got to discover some of the talents and
skills of this remarkable Lady. In the interests of sharing,
I thought it only right to bring you some of my discoveries
with a focus on Magic.
http://www.cdbaby.com/Artist/AbbiSpinnerMcBride
AD: Thank you, Abigail, for taking the time to spend in
conversation. You are known for several accomplishments,
and it is, in some ways, a mite difficult to know where
to start, as I first saw you some years ago Fire Dancing
at a Vegas Halloween Party. I shall begin by asking you
to talk a little bit about your dancing and more specifically
your incorporation of Fire in your Dance.
AM:
My pleasure Tony. Always a joy conversing with a kindred
spirit. Fire. I think of fire as transformational. As with
all things that are transformational, it is to be respected
and honored and can, as we all know, be dangerous to those
who do not fully understand its power. For me, it is a vital
Spiritual element and the same thinking, of respect, knowledge
and honor, applies to all elements in the physical world.
Fire, as you know plays a vital role in all religious beliefs,
some more than others, but in one sense or another it is
present in many religious, spiritual, physical and psychological
concepts. It can be the flame of a single candle of devotion,
the eruption of a volcano or indeed the Sun itself and of
course, all things in-between.
Poets,
songwriters, philosophers, etc., have written of Fire. Often
we describe our passion for something or someone as "our
hearts being on fire, or ablaze,"
the light
of a single candle to open the darkness, the sacred fire
of many Spiritual Gatherings, etc. For me personally, the
lighting of the Shabbat candles in our family home just
before sunset on Friday evenings stirred something in me.
The ritual, as you know began in the tent of Abraham and
was performed by Sarah his first wife. Subsequently by Rebecca
his second wife. This is more than a tradition in a Jewish
household; it is a prayer ritual in which the flame plays
a vital role. It is part of the blessings of peace, light
& harmony. As a young girl, I was allowed to light a
single candle. The significance of the mystical quality
of the flame was written upon my soul, and as I grew, it
drew me deeper into the esoteric nature of Fire.
AD:
So, not surprisingly, Fire incorporated itself into your
dance performances and your quest for the mystical
AM:
Yes Tony. You yourself have spent time attending Shabbat
rituals, in Europe, America and also in Israel, and so perhaps
have a deeper understanding & appreciation of the significance.
And yes, I am very respectful of fire. I really feel that
Fire, in all its forms, must be respected. Incorporating
fire into some of my dance routines, my magic performances
and other allied activities was not something I did overnight.
I studied about how to incorporate fire within those activities.
Without proper training and study anyone deciding to, if
you pardon the cliché, "play with fire"
will indeed suffer the consequences.
AD:
I heard that you had an incident on stage one time, not
necessarily your fault
AM: Yes I did. In spite of my background and training, I
have first-hand experience with this. In 1993, during a
live performance, I made a bad mistake. I was supposed to
pick up a pre-set flash pot and set it discreetly on the
stage, so at the opportune moment, Jeff could step on the
switch and set off an impressive flash of sparks and fire
ah, that black powder flash, nothing quite like it. Unfortunately,
the flash pot had been pre-set backwards, and when I went
to pick it up, I hit the trigger and sent the explosion
off, right into the palm of my hand. The good news was that
I was wearing a full head Kabuki mask, so the audience couldn't
see the expression of pain and shock on my face. The bad
news was that I had to do a two minute fire-eating solo
right after the end of the Kabuki number, as everyone else
had a costume change then, so
the show went on, and
I did my fire-eating segment, while trying very hard not
to cry on-stage, not sure if I could move my hand enough
to hold the torch, not really sure about anything except
finishing the number and getting off-stage
where the
wardrobe assistant was waiting with a bucket of ice water,
and the paramedics were already on the way
. The show
went on without me, and I went to the hospital and got treated
for one of the worst burns the poor young doctor had ever
seen. I remember the paramedic telling me he was pleasantly
surprised by the fact that my hand was still attached to
my arm, and that's when everything gets hazy
. Through
the power of silvadene burn cream, positive visualization,
and actively seeking the lesson to be learned, I was able
to heal completely, and you can't even see the scars
.
So, yes, I have a healthy respect for the element of fire.
AD:
What a terrible experience. That has got to rank way up
high on the list of performance mishaps. I am glad that
was a long while ago and that you are completely healed.
A side of Show-Biz that, thank goodness, the audience never
gets to see or know about. You spoke to me earlier about
Fire being transformational
care to expand
AM:
Happily. Fire and all the elements are part of the nature
of all beings; or least, they should be. I know that like
Jeff and many of my close friends, you yourself are passionate
about the Esoteric. So you will understand when I refer
to an "inner calling to service" that draws me
to the elements. Fire, as I said before, is transformational.
It is part of Alchemy. I attend and often help facilitate
Sacred Fire Circles in the desert. Some of these are private;
others are open to those who feel the call to attend. Our
mutual friend Eugene Burger and many mutual Magician friends
have attended those several times. I call it and them, a
Family of Fire.
AD:
Yes indeed. I know that location in the desert well and
am honored to have performed ceremony there
so, apart
from the obvious mystical & esoteric aspects of these
ceremonies, there is also much to be learnt and applied
to Magical performances.
AM:
In a word, Yes. As we teach at The Mystery School - Magic
can be funny, dramatic, etc., but is always about Entertainment.
As our Dean, Eugene Burger states, "What do you want
your Magic to be?" Whatever answer a Magician or Magicenne
gives, it must always entertain. To do that well, all Magic
performances must contain an element of, at the very least,
mystery and at best, be Mystical to some degree.

13. FISM - Juliana Chen
--------------------------------------------
Message by Joan Caesar (Canada)
I
need to confess something at the very beginning. I love
Juliana. She's one of my favorite people, and I'm absolutely
delighted she'll be in Rimini, performing at FISM. Juliana
won First Place at FISM in 1997 in Dresden, Germany with
her signature card routine.
Juliana
possesses supreme manipulation skills in card manipulation.
She has the capacity to scale a stream of cards at incredible
distances. Aside from her sleight-of-hand wizardry, she
also captivates audiences with her beautiful illusions flavored
with dance, music and theatrics.
She
was the first female and first Chinese magician to win first
place at FISM. Since then she has been invited to perform
in many countries in Europe, Asia and North America. She
has performed in such illustrious theatres as the London
Palladium, the Princess Grace Theatre in Monte Carlo, Caesar's
Palace in Las Vegas, Tiger Palest in Frankfurt, the NHK
theatre in Japan and the Berlin Wintergarten.
Born
in China, she was selected to train at the Hunan Academy
for the Performing Arts. She began to train in ballet, and
later acrobatics and juggling. In her teen years she toured
internationally with the Guangzhou Acrobatic Troupe.
She
injured her leg several times, and was advised by doctors
to abandon foot juggling. While recovering, she saw Shimada
perform on television and was intrigued by the way he combined
magic and Japanese culture. She decided to learn magic.
Juliana is nothing if not determined. Four years after she
first began practicing, she was recognized as the best magician
in China when she won the All-China Best Magician competition.
Juliana
moved to Vancouver Canada in1988, where she worked in sales
and later graphics, while continuing to practice magic.
In 1992 her efforts were rewarded with a first place win
at the International Brotherhood of Magicians convention.
She
became a Canadian citizen; however in 2002 Juliana moved
to Las Vegas and in 2003 was nominated Stage Magician of
the Year by the Academy of Magical Arts in Hollywood. She
appeared on the cover of prominent magic magazines and in
several TV specials.
In
1999 Juliana became the artistic director of the Shanghai
International Magic Festival, held every two years. This
is the largest magic festival in China, sponsored by the
Shanghai Circus, TV and Media Group.
Juliana
was instrumental in helping to open China to Western magicians
by inviting the executives of the Chinese Acrobatic and
Magic Association to attend the IBM convention in Quebec
City, Canada. This encouraged the formation of an IBM Ring
in China and their eventual involvement with FISM.

Message by Adam Mada (Australia)
TV
MAGIC - are you a creator/inventor and want airtime for
your effects?
I'm
an Australian magician, being a resident on ABC 3 TV in
Australia, doing regular TV magic as you know burns material
up fast. I have many spots on National TV booked ready to
go for 2015.
I'm
after your help, if you're a creator or have new tricks
you are bringing to market, and want to have them featured
drop me a line. I'm after snappy modern effects that will
translate well on camera.

15. Schedule Unveiled For South Tyneside Magic Convention
--------------------------------------------
Message by Claire Buchan (UK)
Magicians
from around the world are being given the chance to learn
more about everything from mentalism to card play with the
return of a special, three-day event.
The
South Tyneside International Magic Festival (S.T.I.M.F.)
Convention, based primarily at the Customs House, South
Shields, returns with a weekend of lectures, workshops and
performances in March.
Event
organisers, South Tyneside Council and magician John Archer,
have just released a full itinerary for the popular event,
which annually attracts professional performers from around
the globe.
This
year's convention, which is expected to be a sell-out, will
open at 9am on Friday March 13 and begin with a children's
show and lecture by family magician Russ Brown.
After
lunch, there will be lectures by multi award-winning mentalist
Satori and card expert John Carey, who promises that "attendees
will leave with more than one idea to add to their repertoire."
At
the end of the day attendees will be given free entry to
a public Gala Show, featuring performances by six acts,
including illusionists Diamond and Jade and mind-reader
Luke Jermay, as well as access to an exclusive Midnight
Show for those able to stay awake.
Day
two will begin with lectures by eccentric and theatrical
performer Kieron Lefever and dynamic mind-reader, Atlas,
followed later by comedy magician The Great Nardini and
mentalist Luke Jermay. Saturday's afternoon session will
offer visitors the chance to enjoy a special close up workshop
with Luke, along with card masterminds John Carey and Gordon
Bruce.
This
will be followed by a second public Gala Show featuring
comedy magician Michael Finney, children's entertainer Dave
Andrews, illusionists High Jinx and many more.
The
South Tyneside International Magic Festival Convention 2015
will close on Sunday March 15, with lectures by card manipulator
Gordon Bruce and multi-award winning Michael Finney.
For
those eager to learn even more, there will also master-classes
available with Atlas and Looch and Satori at 3pm, although
these must be pre-booked at an additional cost.
A
variety of dealers will also be on hand throughout the convention,
with stalls open 9am to 6pm Friday, 9.30am until 6pm Saturday
and 10am until 2pm Sunday. An additional dealer showcases
will be held on Saturday only, offering visitors the chance
to hear from trade suppliers in more detail.
Magician
John Archer, who is assisting South Tyneside Council in
managing this year's event, said: "The line-up for
the South Tyneside International Magic Convention 2015 is
one of the most eclectic we've ever had, drawing in experts
from around the world to entertain and inform.
"I'm
confident that there is something on offer to suit every
specialism and I can't wait to welcome our regular attendees
and new friends."
Tickets
for the S.T.I.M.F convention, which runs from Friday March
13 to Sunday March 15, are available now priced at £65
per person. For more information, or to book, call 0191
4247986 or email events@southtyneside.gov.uk. Further details

16. The Incredible Dr. Jaks
--------------------------------------------
Message by Brad Zinn
The
Book
His beloved Book of Mysteries began its trip through various
magic owners, including friends of Jaks, a couple of attorneys,
and a magic manufacturer. At last, in 1987, Robert L. Bluemle
had the beautiful book in his hands. Inside the leather-bound
book were two trays of compartments that held the various
magic props. He commissioned a jewelry photographer to shoot
close-up shots of the book's exotic and artistic items in
bright color, and he became even more caught up in the life
of Siegbert Stanley Jaks. A short time later he contacted
Leo Behnke in Los Angeles, and they began to put together
the life of Dr. Jaks. Bob would write the biography, and
Leo collected the tricks and rewrote them so they were all
in a matching style.
For
over two years they gathered material, not only biographical
facts but photos of Jaks and his friends in Europe and America,
all the variations of his tricks, and most of the cartoons
and artwork that Jaks used in his magazine articles, advertising,
and correspondence. During this time, Bob also put together
a lecture about Jaks and his fabulous book of miracles that
was illustrated by slides of the props. This was presented
to various magic clubs, and was also a feature of the November,
1988, issue of M.U.M., the magazine for the Society of American
Magicians.
Through
the following years Bob maintained his interest in Jaks
by continuing to collect photos and information, but the
press of work and a divorce made his time much more valuable.
He finally moved to Vermont in 2001 to be closer to his
two daughters, and started to enjoy a retired life.
On
8 May, 2014, Robert Bluemle passed away at the age of 80,
and it looked as though the book about Jaks was doomed to
vanish forever. Ken Klosterman heard about the finished
but unpublished manuscript, and contacted Leo about publishing
it in the memory of Bluemle. Leo agreed, and after 28 years
the book was put into final shape for printing and distributing.
Two editions
There
are two editions available to close-up magicians, mentalists,
historians, collectors, or those who like an intriguing
story about a fascinating character. Although each book
has the identical text and medley of 70 of Jaks's tricks,
each cover has its own design.
Trade
Edition
The book of 296 pages is bound in a dark red cloth matching
the leather of Dr. Jaks's original book, matching headbands
and footbands, with gold titles on the spine and the front
cover. It also has a 24-page section of full-color photos,
and complete directions for the 70 Dr.Jaks tricks.
Collector's
Edition
This copy is printed the same as the other edition, but
is bound in dark red leather and is decorated in gold and
black to match the cover of the original Book of Mysteries.
There are endbands at the head and foot of the spine, a
special bookmark and a Dr. Jaks bookplate are enclosed,
and a colophon is tipped-in with the signatures of both
Ken Klosterman and Leo Behnke. Each copy is numbered as
one of fifty copies, and is enclosed in a red cloth-covered
slipcase.
Both
editions are available for sale from the publisher: Ken
Klosterman 6600 Smith Road Loveland OH 45140
After
28 years, the Dr. Jaks book is finally available so all
members of the magic arts can read about, and appreciate,
what the man did for our profession. He changed and paved
the way for future practitioners of those two arts to be
considered artists, as well as earn larger fees. Those two
fields of conjuring are the artistic presentation of close-up
and the legitimate presentation of mentalism.
Thank
you, Dr. Stanley Jaks . . .
"The Incredible Dr. Jaks"
Trade edition: $79.00
Collector's edition: $169.00

17. Blackburn And District Society Of Magicians
--------------------------------------------
Message by Dr Roger Woods (UK)
Dr Roger Woods AIMC* was installed as President of The Modern
Mystic League (Blackburn & District Society of Magicians)
for the third time on 11th January, 2015. He is a lawyer,
magician, musician, author, lecturer and publisher. His
interest in conjuring began with a David Nixon magic set
when he was ten years old. Roger was a Solicitor and then
Barrister with the Crown Prosecution Service for over twenty
five years, but since his retirement has been able to spend
more time with magic.
He
is an Associate of the Inner Magic Circle, previously Chairman
of The Modern Mystic League, and a member of the International
Brotherhood of Magicians (Order of Merlin Shield), the Northern
Magic Circle (President 2013 - 2014) and the Cavendish Knights
of Close up Magic.
Roger, who has five degrees in law and the arts, has lectured
extensively on law and magic since the 1980s. He offers
magic talks suitable for all kinds of clubs and societies.
He has written a number of books on magic history (several
co-authored with Brian Lead MIMC) and won many awards. Details
appear on his web site www.rogerwoodsmagic.co.uk.
Apart
from magic history and biography, Roger's main interest
lies in close up magic although he strongly believes that
a wide curiosity in all aspects of magic is the most fruitful.
Roger
has recently published two new books. Chris Van Bern: The
Busy 'B'; The original British magician and Variety Performer
is a biography of Chris Van Bern (1872? - 1950) christened
The Busy 'B' by The Magician Monthly in 1911 because of
his versatility as a variety performer.
His
presentations were original and he was something of a 'character'.
He became a member of so many local magic clubs throughout
the UK that it is believed his record has never been surpassed
by anyone. A generous man to all magicians he co-authored
A Whirlwind of Wizadry with De Vega. His career lasted over
40 years. There is a particular interest for The Magic Circle
as in 1946 he donated all his magic society medals and jewels
to the Society's museum. This paperback book is available
on Lulu.com price £12. The e book version is also
available on Lybrary.com price £8.26 (i.e. $12).
The
Centenary History of The Modern Mystic League (Blackburn
and District Society of Magicians) 1914 - 2014 is also available
on Lulu.com and the paperback version is priced at £30
and the e book version at £5. This book of 189 pages
tells the story of Roger's local society from the founding
by nine Blackburn gentlemen in February, 1914 to the present
day. Fully illustrated in colour, eleven chapters set out
the ups and downs of the MML with the final chapter detailing
the events of the Centenary year, 2014.
