The New Zealand Royal Honour's List was circulated in the
media on the 31st December 2014 announcing that I had received
the Queen Services Medal (QSM) for services as a magician.
Naturally I was absolutely stunned when I was asked beforehand
if I would like to receive the award!
The
congratulatory correspondence I received from all over the
world was truly overwhelming and I will try and reply to
them all individually over the next few weeks.
The
investiture ceremony will take place at Government House
in Wellington sometime in May.
See
Nick Lewin's article # 7 for more information.

2. ISIS Behead Street Magician

The
terrorist group claims his actions were an 'insult to Islam'
and executed the Dynamo-style performer
A
street magician had his head chopped off by Islamic State
thugs for entertaining passers-by with his tricks.
The
talented performer, loved by children, was dragged away
while performing in the jihadists' "capital" of
Raqqa in Syria.
He
was later beheaded in a public square after his harmless
stunts, similar to those of Bradford-born superstar Dynamo,
were deemed to insult Islam.
A
local who fled to safety in Turkey called his murder "barbarism
and butchery."
The street magician was arrested by IS thugs during an impromptu
'show' on a street corner as he tried to bring some much-needed
cheer to the Syrian city.
He
was beheaded in public in a square after the religious fanatics
branded his harmless tricks as anti-Islam and an insult
to God because they created 'illusions and falsehood'.
They
denounced the terrified magician's show as haram - or forbidden
by the Koran - because it was idle entertainment and kept
locals from praying and attending the mosque.
The
activist who fled said: "The magician was a popular
man who entertained people with little tricks on the street
like making coins or phone disappear.
"He
was just called Sorcerer by people and children loved him.
He was doing nothing anti-Islamic but he paid for it with
his life

3. Banachek On The Magic Word
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star
This
week on the Magic Word the listeners get their Christmas
present...Banachek. Over the past several months, many of
you have requested that we post "more Banachek".
Well, this week you can enjoy a whole hour with Banachek.
During one of the rare times when he had an extended stay
at home here in Houston, we were able to get together for
lunch where I turned on the mic and recorded a proper Q&A.
Banachek
talks about his association and friendship with James "the
Amazing" Randi and Criss Angel and his upcoming tour
with the Supernaturalists. This promises to be a magic troupe
unlike any that has toured before including the currently
touring "Illusionists". Banachek says that Criss
promises that the Supernaturalists tour will revolutionize
magic just as Cirque du Soleil transformed the circus. The
tour begins next June at Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut.
You
can see some photos of those who will be on tour with the
Supernaturalists, watch a promo video of James Randi's new
award winning documentary, and enjoy our chat on The Magic
Word at http://TheMagicWordPodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/banachek
Have
a very Merry Christmas and be sure to come back next week
on January 1st for a wrap up of "This Year in Magic".

5. Ticketing For Your Show Plus More
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star
On
this week's podcast on The Magic Word, we have a "two-fer"
for you featuring two separate interviews. First up is a
chat with William Rader, a mentalist who books his own shows
in Denver, Colorado. In order to get more people into his
theaters around town, he developed a software program called
WellAttended.com that allows his patrons (and yours) easy
access to purchasing tickets online. He also talks about
how he finds venues to book his shows.
Next
up is the alliterative duo, Max Mahem and Logan Lethal,
who together are known as the "Nightmare Brothers Circus".
They work in downtown Manhattan in New York City's Time
Square area with a unique sideshow comedy magic show. They
had a dream and a passion and found an opportunity. I believe
their story could serve as an inspiration to others who
are interested in finding venues for their own shows.
You
can see some photos of these gentlemen, get links to some
cool websites, and hear the podcast at: http://themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/tickets-and-shows
You can listen online or download the MP3 file through the
website. Of course you can download the podcast through
iTunes in the podcast store. If you have an Android device,
I suggest you download "Podcatcher" to download
and listen to The Magic Word.

6. The British Are Coming
--------------------------------------------
Message by Dennis Schick
`The
British are coming! It has been a long tradition of The
Linking Ring to feature the largest Ring in the International
Brotherhood of Magicians (I.B.M.) in its January issue.
That is The British Ring, Ring 25, with over eight hundred
members. The Cover Story is about the Ring 25 president,
Alan Astra; the Parade is by Ring 25 magicians; and columnist
Peter Scarlet gives us his monthly report from Great Britain
in "The London Eyes." For a preview of the one
hundred and sixty-eight pages, READ ON.
As
you'll see on the cover of the January issue, the new president
of Ring 25 has red, curly hair. Why? You'll want to read
the seven-page profile on him and his wife, Barbara to find
the answer. There are lots of photos, too, showing their
colorful multiple careers over the past three decades
Ian
Adair, one of the most prolific writers in all of magic
history, has been coordinating the January Parade of Ring
25 members for nearly four decades. This time there are
seventeen effects included, brilliantly illustrated by Tony
Dunn, as always. You'll have fun with many of these.
Other
major features this month include: a continuation of insights
into the life of Charles Dickens and his connections to
magic; a review of the Fourth Biennial China Westlake International
Magic Convention by Dale Salwak; the first of a new series,
Commitment and Passion, paying tribute to John R. Browne
III; and a major article on soliciting grants for magic
programs, by magician and grant veteran Dr. Lynn Miner.
(Don't miss this one!)
The
regular columnists are back for your thoughtful consideration:
both editor Sammy Smith and International President Shawn
Farquhar devote their columns appropriately to resolutions;
Skip Way gives us some great advice on icebreakers, energizers,
and brain trainers for your Ring; veteran Bev Bergeron talks
about "You and sound on stage" in his column,
"Cutting Up Jackpots;" and John Tudor devotes
his "Experiments in Magic Theater" column to "Wish
Paper," a discussion of the first of twelve items from
his repertoire.
Of
course everyone likes to read the "trick" columns
each month, and The Linking Ring consistently has the best
trick columnists anywhere. Mike Powers turns his "The
Card Corner" over to Shannon Clark, who brings us "Another
Coincidence," (an evolution from Patrick Page); Joe
Turner's "Ways and Means" column features "Sidamo
(A Utility Concept for Mentalism)," by Atlanta magician
Chris Beason; the "Numismagic" column by Jean-Emmanuel
Franzis, features "The Wishing Well" by Dr. Michael
Rubinstein (a coin production routine); Andrew Woo's "Simple
Diversions" is called "Football Flip," a
heads or tails effect; Jeff Prace's "The Expert at
the Tech Table" brings us "LexiCON," created
by Josh Janousky; and Ed Solomon's "Storytelling Magic"
is called "X-traordinary," using tarot cards.
All
this is available to members of the world's largest magic
organization, the I.B.M., by hard copy, electronically,
or by PDF download. For more information, go to www.magician.org.

7. Remarkable Magic #376 - Nick Lewin
--------------------------------------------
Message by Nick Lewin
Our
Editor receives a very great honor.
Usually
a few days prior to the deadline for my weekly contribution
to Magic New Zealand I am busy scratching my head and trying
to find a topic that I consider relevant and will be of
interest to our incredibly international readership. My
first column of 2015 was an unbelievably easy choice and
it is with enormous pride and satisfaction that I get to
write it.
Alan
Watson has been recognized in the 2015 New Zealand New Year's
Honours list by Queen Elizabeth II and is to be awarded
The Queen's Service Medal (QSM). This is a truly unique
honor to be bestowed on a magician. The award will be presented
by the Governor-General of New Zealand Lieutenant-General
The Right Honorable Sir Jerry Mateparae GNZM QSO on behalf
Queen Elizabeth II at an investiture in May.
This
highly prestigious award was presented to Alan for his services
to the magical arts, which makes it not only a wonderful
tribute to Alan but also a powerful boost to the recognition
of our art form in general. To my knowledge this is the
only Royal award of its kind that has been presented to
a magician for his life work.
"I
was really thrilled for the magicians in New Zealand because
it meant our art form was being recognized with a royal
honor," Watson said of his surprise award. He says
he has no idea who nominated him for the award and wondered
at the detail in the biographical note issued by Government
House. "I was astounded, where did they get all this
information from?"
The
letter Alan received from New Zealand's Prime Minister The
Right Honorable John Key went on to elaborate on the reason
for the award by stating; "Our success as a nation
relies on citizens from all walks of life stepping forward,
helping others, seeking new ways of doing things, and reaching
for their dreams. You have made an outstanding contribution
to that success and enriched the lives of us all."
Everyone who knows Watson will appreciate the resonance
these words have when applied to Alan.
As
you may imagine a great deal of consideration and research
goes into the decision of presenting an award such as the
Queen's Service Medal. When you read the elements that went
into the choice of Watson to be granted this honor it is
an impressive list. Let me just mention just a few of the
previous awards that have been presented to Alan.
In
2010 Watson received The International Presidential Citation
from The Society of American Magicians. In 2006 he was the
recipient of the New Zealand Variety Artists Club Benny
Award for Lifetime Achievement. In 2006 he received Grand
Master of Magic Award, Supreme Award. 2005 also saw Watson
presented with The International Brotherhood of Magicians,
Presidential Citation. In 2002 Watson received the prestigious
J Marberger Stuart Foundation, DRAGON Award (jointly with
his wife Michele).
However
it isn't the awards that make Alan Watson such a great addition
to the magic community, it is his actions that have been
the reasons for receiving these accolades. He has promoted
magic tirelessly and selflessly his entire life, and raised
New Zealand's profile enormously in international circles
across the globe. In the last ten years he has arranged
$70,000 of sponsorship for young magicians to attend conventions
and lectures in New Zealand and Australia. Not just a proud
member of the magic world Alan is a proud 'Kiwi,' and never
prouder than when he can combine these two loves in this
sort of manner.
It
has been my privilege to work on Magic New Zealand with
Alan for the past seven years and I am always amazed at
the endless energy and enthusiasm that he dedicates to this
wonderful and totally free magical resource. Money is not
the motivation for Magic New Zealand or any of Watson's
magical projects---he makes a very fine living as a magical
performer! The reason that Alan shines as such a bright
star in the magic world is his sheer love of our art form.
I
take this opportunity to congratulate Watson on this wonderful
recognition for his contributions to magic over the years.
Those of us who are lucky enough to know Alan didn't need
any special awards to appreciate his singular achievements,
however the fact that half a world away in Buckingham Palace
this was noted and rewarded by Queen Elizabeth is something
very, very special. Congratulations my Kiwi brother.

This
will be a very short article this week but one I feel I
need to send out.
My wife lost her mom and I lost my mother-in-law on the
evening of New Year's Eve. The emotions and the crying and
the confusion shook us hard as it still does. The sheer
shock of having someone here one moment and gone the next
really makes one think how precious life is.
Do NOT take anything for granted, even the magic that we
perform and the ability to make a difference in the life
of another through the magical arts.
Do NOT shy away from making someone smile through your magic.
Do NOT walk away from doing a show for kids in need or handicapped
people simply because you are nervous or scared.
Let your magic make a difference to others. Share in the
beauty that is the art we all love so much.
Mom always made us smile and enjoyed the magic that we both
got to perform for her.
Mom we will miss you greatly now and forever.
NOTE: This article is written and dedicated to the memory
of Helene Austin. We love you.

As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your
thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or
suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly

9. Graham Walker, Older Brother Of Steve Walker
--------------------------------------------
Message by Graham Walker forwarded on by Joe Baynie
Hi,
I am Graham Walker, older brother of Steve Walker, Unrealist.
I
would like to take this opportunity to thank the many 4,000
or more friends, colleagues and acquaintances who sent messages
by email and Facebook, etc, after hearing of the passing
of my brother.
Over
the last 50 years or so, Steve and I have seen very little
of each other, being on different sides of the world. Our
meetings have usually been for official occasions, Weddings
and Anniversaries and, of course when he was attending functions
and conventions of his beloved
Magic Circle.
I
very rarely saw Steve perform on stage with his magic. It
has usually been up close and personal in small groups of
friends and families. However, I have always been proud
of his achievements and the manner in which he conducted
his life. The response from all of you shows that he was
well loved and respected.
Although,
being in England, I could not attend Steve's funeral, I
would like to say what a great job my sister, Joyce and
her husband, Karl did. They kept me well informed of everything
that had been done and carried us through.
On
behalf of myself and my wife, another Ann Walker, thank
you very much for your response to this sad occasion.
I
wish you all the best for Christmas and the New Year.
Graham
Walker

11. FISM - The Augustus Arch
--------------------------------------------
Message by Joan Caesar (Canada)
The
Augustus Arch
The Augustus Arch is something you should build into your
FISM calendar. It's well worth seeing! Built in 27 BC and
dedicated to the Emperor Augustus by the Roman Senate that
same year, is the oldest remaining Roman Arch in the world.
It's at the point where the 2 main roads in the Roman Empire
met - the Via Flaminia N-S and Via Emilia E-W.
The
arch has a single gate 9.92 metres (33 ft) high and 8.45
metres (28 ft) wide. The merlons (a solid wall between openings)
were added in the Middle Ages. It was restored in the 18th
century by Tommaso Temanza.
The
central arch, which is of exceptional size, is flanked by
two columns with fluted shafts and Corinthian capitals.
(In architecture, the 'capital' is the topmost part of a
column. It joins the column to the area above, broadening
the area of the column's supporting surface.) Four shields
placed next to the capitals each depict Roman gods: Jupiter
(King of the gods) and Apollo (god of prophecy, sunlight,
music and healing) on the Roman side, Neptune (god of the
sea) and Roma facing the city of Rimini.
The
gate's principal function, aside from the obvious, was to
support the lavish bronze statue of Augustus, depicted driving
a quadriga, an ancient Greek or Roman 2-wheeled chariot
that was drawn by four houses harnessed alongside each other.
The
main peculiarity of this arch is that the archway was especially
large for a gate of the time. Historians think that it was
made in this way because of the peaceful policy of Augustus,
who did not want the gate closed unnecessarily signaling
that they were in no danger of attack.
The
battlements on the upper part date to the medieval period
(10th century). It remained one of the city gates until
the Fascist period, when the city wall was demolished and
the arch was left as an isolated monument.

14. 'Imaginary Magic' At Fringe World, Perth
--------------------------------------------
Message by Bruce Glen (Australia)
Hey
Presto's Bruce Glen (The Gentleman Magician) will present
his new show: 'Imaginary Magic' at Fringe World, Perth,
Western Australia, in February.
A Storytelling Magic Show for Adults (but not necessarily
grown-ups) Imaginary Magic was created especially for Fringe
World.
A legendary Perth con-man exposed; lost manuscripts from
Wonderland; the hidden power of our minds revealed; Houdini's
feats recreated; the impossible rendered possible
and will there be a visitor from the spirit world?
Imaginary
Magic will challenge you to unlock your imagination and
explore why intelligent, rational people sometimes really
believe they have experienced strange, other-worldly phenomena.
When: 5:45pm 7-12 February, 2015
Where: TEATRO 2 (PG) The Pleasure Garden,
James Street, Northbridge, Perth
Book: www.fringeworld.com.au Tickets: $25.00

Magic
Castle's Most Awarded Performer
As Seen on David Letterman's Late Show
Pin-balling
between jaunty comedic riffs and mind-boggling sleight of
hand, magician John Carney will have you reeling with his
hilarious audience participation segments and embodiment
of multiple characters. Carney isn't quite like any magician
you've seen before.
One
of the top sleight of hand performers in the world, Carney
has won more awards from Hollywood's Magic Castle than anyone
in their history.
You
won't see any big boxes, tigers, dancing girls, or lasers.
Just a quirky, likable guy, cracking-wise and doing some
pretty amazing things. And all the while, you'll be laughing
yourself silly.

Carney
is family friendly, but not a kiddie show.
Recommended for ages 8 and up.
"High
Energy ... Combines magic tightly and inventively with his
comedy"
VARIETY
"Knocking
em' dead ... Personable and funny ... Got you laughing as
much as mystified"
DRAMALOGUE
"...
a blessing ... Carney's an amiable, quick-witted Iowan with
a twinge of sarcasm under his breath ... seamless technique
... makes a mockery of empiricism and the known mechanics
of the universe."
