Many
of you know I disappear to little Colon every August to
enjoy the original Abbotts Magic Get Together. I started
attending when I was twelve.
The

here's their wonderful, loving documentary. Oh, and I show
up at about 3:32 in a very loud shirt, eating pizza. Enjoy,
and maybe you'll join us next year!

8. Remarkable Magic #364 - Nick Lewin
--------------------------------------------
Message by Nick Lewin (US)
A
couple of gems for the working professional.
I
want to thank everyone who took the time to email me about
last week's column about 'The Act.' I seem to have hit quite
a nerve with a lot of people out there, and as always I
thoroughly enjoyed hearing your overwhelmingly positive
comments on thoughts. Incidentally I love to hear from you
even if you totally disagree with my opinions! You can always
reach me at nicklewin1@mac.com
I
have recently begun to review some of the newest magical
releases in the various magic journals I write for. Nowadays
brick and mortar magic stores are beginning to feature heavily
on the endangered species list. The business of choosing
how to transform your hard earned cash into commercial magic
via the Internet certainly has its own traps and pitfalls.
I hope I can help with some unbiased and practical input
on the matter.
I
am trying to concentrate on sharing commercial and "show
ready" routines, and will be focusing on comedy magic
and mentalism tricks/routines because this is my area of
interest and expertise. Most, but not all, of the items
I review are effects that I have actually purchased---because
that can give you a different perspective on them. I am
certainly delighted to write about items that I have been
sent at random, however my goal will be to continue to primarily
concentrate on the commercial appeal of a release.
There
is a trend recently by "professional reviewers"
to be rather scathing about the "one trick DVD"
and bemoan the fact that the publisher expects $35 dollars
and only teaches a specific effect. I couldn't agree less
with this viewpoint. A DVD that really allows you to learn
a worthwhile routine and then add it to your repertoire
is a wonderful thing and in my opinion beats out most releases
that are
packed with tricks (or more accurately ideas) that are only
partially thought out. In this world you have to pay for
polish and focus and to my mind $35 bucks is a ridiculously
small price to pay for someone's knowledge and experience.
In
my opinion a perfect example of a strong release is "Joe
Monti's Original Thumb Tie" DVD, you can find full
details at www.thumbtie.com If you buy this item you are
purchasing twenty plus years of experience that will allow
you to perform an extremely effective routine that has been
polished and perfected in the furnace of live performance.
If you want to add an effective thumb tie routine then look
no further you will not be disappointed.
There
is no wasted philosophizing or padding in this release,
your $35 buys you some zip strips and a short video that
does an excellent job of teaching you Joe's routine step
by step. If you want to add a classic trick to your show
that blends strong comedy with powerful magic, then this
could be one of the best purchases you can make. Always
important to me, every prop involved in this trick fits
in your back pocket and yet the action involved will fill
a living room or big theatre with equal ease.
Another
item that Monti is currently marketing is his "Three
Card Joe," an effect more commonly known as Chase The
Ace. Joe's routine is smooth, smart and thoroughly streamlined
for effective performance to contemporary audiences. Like
Joe's thumb tie routine part of the appeal in his handling
is that he has cut out every unnecessary element that gets
in the way of the intrinsic impact of the effect. Just follow
his deceptively casual instructional DVD, spend a few hours
in front of the mirror and you have a classic effect that
will stand you in good stead for years to come.
I
have performed different variations of Chase The Ace ever
since Ken Brooke taught me my first one in the mid 60's.
This one is the most direct and effective I have found,
no extra moves or wasted time, just a well thought out routine
that gets right to the point - maybe I should say cuts to
the chase! You also get beautifully made cards that have
been designed and manufactured to the highest standards.
After
45 years of professional shows, I still get a kick when
I discover truly definitive routines and I am grateful to
Joe for sharing his working material in this manner. Both
items are highly recommended to discriminating magicians.

9. Festival Marketing - Community Calendars - #355 - Kyle
Peron

Message by Kyle Peron (US)

Part
of being a success at working festivals is the ability to
build relationships with the client/s and having them see
the value that you give them. You want to be a solutions
provider and not just an entertainer. The more problems
you solve for them, the more your perceived value grows
in their minds.
Part
of building this relationship is having them see large crowds
at your shows and many happy and smiling patrons. They want
their festival guests to have a great time. A large and
happy crowd reacting favorably to what you are doing gets
back to the client really quickly.
So
what are ways in which to ensure large crowds at your festival
shows? One is simply advertising your appearance at the
festival. Many entertainers make 2 assumptions when it comes
to festival advertising and promotion. They feel like 1)
it will be done entirely by the festival itself and they
will advertise your appearance there and 2) that they are
not allowed to help advertise their appearance.
Let
me talk a bit about both if I can. The first rule of thumb
is to never assume anything when it comes to working festivals.
This simply means always ask questions and always find out
the answers to questions you have.
Sometimes
festivals will indeed promote your appearance and will do
a fine job. Some will not advertise you much at all and
others may just state that a "magician" or a "juggler"
will be appearing but not state your stage name etc. This
is natural to happen as all festivals are different and
they handle advertising and promotion differently as well.
One of the best things you can do for yourself is to offer
to help make their job easier by providing them with information,
photos, bios, web art, logos and anything you feel they
can utilize. By doing so, you are
showing them you are a professional, you are helping them
tremendously and you are ensuring a better chance that you
will be advertised properly.
If
you want to start to advertise yourself and your appearance
at the festival, it usually is never a problem. Just make
sure to touch base with your festival client ahead of time.
Ask them that you would like to help get the word out about
their festival and your appearance there and if that would
be OK with them.
It
is a win-win situation for them and so is usually never
a problem at all. Just always ask permission ahead of time
before you begin. In this way they know you are doing it,
can assist you with proper information and they get to see
the value you are giving to them. One of the best ways to
advertise your appearance at the festival is through a FREE
method called online community calendars. Many
communities and municipalities have community based websites.
These websites are geared at letting people in their communities
know about important information.
As
a part of these community based websites, they usually have
a calendar of events section. These calendars are set up
in such a way that anyone can freely post events and community
events to the calendar. It is usually done through an online
form page. Just enter in your information and click the
button and you are one.
The
beauty of this is that they are free of charge and can be
done quickly. There are a lot of them and you can find them
easily by doing Google searches for "Community Calendar
(town name)" or with a keyword such as "Calendar
of Events (township)". With a little Google searching,
you can find numerous online calendars to be able to place
your event information.
It
is a quick and easy way to get your information out there
to a vast audience who usually check the calendars for things
to do with their families.
***
I
hope this information has given you an idea of what can
be done with working the festival market. If you would like
additional and detailed information on this topic, please

always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your

12. World's Oldest Clown Dies At 98 In Montana
--------------------------------------------
Article forwarded by Phillip Peters (US)
Billings
Gazette
"Creeky
the Clown" dies
Floyd
V. Creekmore, better known as Creeky the Clown, died last
weekend after decades of making people laugh and helping
sick children feel better.
Creekmore,
of Billings, was 98.
"Creeky
was my mentor," said Lucky Seibert, a fellow Al Bedoo
Shrine clown. "He was always striving, and he'd always
help you" at clown competitions
.
"The clown group grew up around Creeky," Seibert
said. "It's sad to lose him."
Seibert
said he offered to apply clown makeup one last time for
his old friend for use during Creeky's funeral, but Creekmore
elected to be cremated.
"He
made a lot of friends nationwide with his clowning,"
said Clint Frank, of Billings, whose clown name is Cuddles.
"He was kind of the godfather of Al Bedoo clowns."
In
2012, Creeky earned a mention in the Guinness Book of World
Records as the world's oldest performing clown. Born July
14, 1916, in FergusCounty, Creekmore had been performing
since the 1980s and was recognized in February 2012 as "the
oldest clown still working" at the age of 95 years,
6 months.
His
fellow clowns knew Creekmore not only as a performer, but
as a teacher of clowns. "He taught us by the way he
did things," said Jim Nasby, who's known as
MADD MAXX when he's sporting clown makeup. "He taught
us how to throw a
pie right."
Nasby
recalled Creekmore's 90th birthday celebration. He was so
popular that his friends threw him five separate birthday
parties, Nasby recalled.
"He
and Betty were a wonderful couple," Nasby said, noting
that Creekmore's wife died two years ago at age 96. "I
think part of the reason he died was of loneliness."
Creekmore
told the Billings Gazette in 2004 that he joined the Al
Bedoo Shrine and donned makeup and oversized clothes and
shoes because he had a nephew in the Shrine Hospital in
Spokane, Wash., "and I decided right then that I wanted
to help out," Creekmore said. Creeky was honored in
1993 when the International Shrine Clown Association named
him Clown of the Year. He said a career highlight was
the time he and 16 other clowns picked up Red Skelton at
the Billings airport and drove the comedian to his hotel.
Skelton was so impressed with the clown entourage that he
spent time swapping clown stories with them in the hotel
lobby.
"He
was so spontaneous and funny," Seibert said of Creeky,
his friend and mentor. Seibert said he recently took first
place at the Pacific Northwest Shrine Clown Association
competition - a feat made possible by Creeky's absence.
"I
did what Creeky used to do," Lucky the Clown said.
"His mind was so sharp. He would come up with gags,
and then he'd teach us how to make the gag work."
During
one competition about 15 years ago, Creeky rigged a card
table to collapse on cue, which the audience found hilarious.
But at the crucial moment, the card table failed to collapse.
"When
your props don't work, they don't work," Creekmore
told the crowd, walking off the stage - to laughter and
applause.
Frank
- aka Cuddles - remembered one clown convention when another
clown hadn't prepared a routine for the two-clown skit competition.
"Ten minutes before the competition started, Creeky
told the guy, 'Come with me, and we will have a two-man
skit.' They ended up taking second place. That's the kind
of guy he was - so full of ideas."
Seibert
said many fellow clowns are expected to attend Creekmore's
funeral - but not in full makeup, and certainly not in comically
large shoes.
"I'll
wear a red silk jacket," Lucky said. "It'll be
kind of hard to smile."

13. Buy Magic Online?
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star
Last
March we explored Brick and Mortar magic shops; what they
offer, their relevance to magicians today plus a look at
their past, current status and possible future. One of the
comments left on The Magic Word blog was to have another
podcast that focused on the online magic business. You listen
to me so I listened to you.
So,
this week on The Magic Word we chat with representatives
from the e-commerce world of magic sales. Tim Trono from
Penguin Magic and Jason Brumbalow from Murphy's Magic Supplies
provide us with a perspective from the digital world where
buying magic is just a click away.
These
two gentlemen have a good handle on what's going on in the
world of online sales and talk a little about their business
models and why they believe online purchasing is a logical
progression in the evolution of marketing in general and
a nice supplement to the mom and pop magic shops.
You
can listen to this podcast on The Magic Word at:
http://themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/online-magic-shops
You can listen online or download the MP3 file through the
blog. Of course you can download it from iTunes or get the
podcast through your favorite podcather. You can listen
on your computer, your smart phone, your tablet, your laptop,
transfer to a flash drive and listen in your car, on your
jog, on your bike, and, well...you get the idea.
Thanks for listening and for your comments and suggestions.
I am doingthis for you. Heaven knows I'm not doing it for
money, because without your donations, there is no money.
I have no advertisers or sponsors. All the banners and ads
I generously provide as a service for you to find quality
merchants. And for those eight people (yes, only eight donors
over the past two years) who have donated and become "Friends
of The Magic Word" and the others who have purchased
some of the merchandise from the Shop, I give you a sincere
"thank you". And for
those who have been waiting to donate...well, now's a good
time! You can help The Magic Word via PayPal by sending

15. Major Project Almost Complete
--------------------------------------------
Message by Paul Romhany
For
the past six months I've been working almost full time produce
a TV pilot with Andrew Gerard. We've kept it quiet until
NOW as the project is almost complete.
I
was asked to produce a DVD using the works from Richard
Webster and Neal Scryer and their amazing collection of
books. It was no easy task as we knew it had to be done
right. The first person we wanted to get on board for the
first DVD was Andrew Gerard. Gerard has consulted for almost
all the major television stars of today and currently working
on another television show overseas.
This
project is like no other as Andrew and I decided we'd turn
the material from Scryer's books in to a TV show. With a
crew and six months work we have almost completed the project.
For
a sneak preview here I am talking about the work ...

This

watch me perform.
To
celebrate, The Hub Mall is putting on a special school holiday
week with 14 live shows featuring my exotic bird act that
I have become so well known for, some amazing illusions
and ventriloquism. Every child attending gets a free magic
wand and a souvenir picture.
Advertisements
can be spotted on the back of Christchurch city buses. Interestingly
it was the Hub Mall that gave me my first mall show at,
35 years ago.
I
continue to present my You've Got The Power anti-bullying
school show sponsored by major power company Trustpower.
Acclaimed top school show that appears in schools nationwide
throughout the year. www.elgregoe.trustpower.co.nz It is
this show that gained me recognition from Her Majesty The
Queen when she gave me The New Zealand of Merit for services
to education.
I
have always loved performing magic. I still feel the same
excitement as when I first started performing and I am grateful
that I can bring the thrill and wonder of seeing live magic
to so many folk nationwide.
My
favourite trick is producing a 6 foot silk from an empty
tube which I drape over my hand and walk out into the crowd.
Pulling the silk off my hand, I expose a live Macaw flapping
its huge wings. Seeing the audience respond, now that's
the moment that makes it all so rewarding.
I
want to thank so many magicians overseas and here in New
Zealand that have encouraged, helped and continue to mentor
me in my magical journey.
