2. Hey Presto: Sydney Magic Shop Goes Up In Puff Of Smoke
--------------------------------------------
Article forwarded on by Bernard Reid (NZ)
A
magic shop went up in a puff of smoke in Sydney's CBD overnight,
but firefighters must have been dismayed to find that this
was no illusion.
Fire
crews were called to the Hey Presto Magic Studio, which
bills itself as the largest magic shop in the southern hemisphere,
on Pitt Street in the CBD at 3.25am on Monday to find the
ground-floor building completely smoke logged.
Superintendent
Tom Cooper, from Fire and Rescue NSW, said the source of
the blaze was believed to be packets of flash paper, commonly
used in magicians' tricks.
Flash
paper ignites with a brilliant flame, and can create the
illusion that flames are coming from a person's fingertips.
"Magicians
use it because, as soon as it is ignited, it consumes itself
completely without smoke or anything like that. It's basically
paper treated with nitric acid," he said.
Superintendent
Cooper said packets of the highly flammable paper ignited
for some reason in the shop's storeroom.
While
the damage from the fire was relatively small, the large
amount of smoke set off an automatic fire alarm and activated
the building's sprinklers.
"The
sprinklers activated, which caused major damage to that
shop and two floors below. On one floor there is believed
to be a computer shop which was water damaged," Superintendent
Cooper said.
"There
was minor damage by fire, but a lot of damage by the water."
It
took five fire crews about three hours to extinguish the
blaze and make the building safe.

6. Podcast: Flim & Flam - Mentalism & Comedy In
Gatlinburg, Tennessee

Message by Scott Wells, A.I.M.C. with Silver Star
Are
you bold enough to approach theater owners and pitch a show
that you don't yet have? This week on The Magic Word Podcast,
Bill Gladwell talks about how he pitched a mentalism show,
won the deal and developed a show that led to a seven year
theater contract in the tourist mecca of Gatlinburg, Tennessee.
A little later, Keith Fields came over from Britain and
now also entertains nightly in the same theater with his
British humor that slays his sold out audiences every night.
You
can listen to my chat with Bill and Keith as they talk about
working in the theater, street performing, developing an
act, routining, and more. You can find it on The Magic Word
at: http://themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/gladwell-and-fields
or you can download it from the website on your MP3 player
for later listening. Of course it is also available through
the free app at http://app.cat/themagicword/ or on iTunes
and by subscription to the RSS feed or various podcatchers
for any device.
To
correct a link from last week, I posted the wrong URL here
on the New Zealand E-Zine for visiting the chat I had with
Steve Bargatze, Rick Merrill and David Corsaro on writing
comedy. Please be sure to check out that educational podcast

7. Remarkable Magic #350 - Nick Lewin
--------------------------------------------
Message by Nick Lewin (US)
Remarkable
Magic #350. Bob Sheets; the close-up magical entertainer
who has it all.
Susan
and I had the pleasure of attending the 50th birthday party
of C.J. Johnston last week here in Austin and it was a great
occasion with fine food, friends and drink. There was a
lovely additional touch that I want to describe in some
detail in this week's column, which was the magical entertainment
presented by legendary close-up performer Bob Sheets.
I
have known Bob since I arrived in America four decades ago
but never had the chance to really spend much time with
him. I have certainly never got the opportunity to observe
him in action in a fairly typical house party environment
as I did last Saturday. It was impressive to observe just
how skilled he really was in presenting his comedy close-up
show to a group of about seventy houseguests. Let me give
you a run-down of the show.
The
attendees at the party seemed a nice blend of magician 'type'
people and genuine civilians. It would be difficult to estimate
who enjoyed Sheets' performance the most, the magicians
or non-magicians. There was certainly plenty of fine entertainment
for both groups during Bob's 45-50 minute show and if magic
was not your cup of tea---there were also non-stop laughs
to enrich the experience.
Bob
Sheets is the epitome of an experienced close-up entertainer
and it took about a Nano-second of time for him to let the
audience know they were in skilled hands and to settle back
and relax. His all-important opening routine had the audience
laughing and enjoying the show instantly employing a blend
of stand-up comedy, sight gags and some very nifty coin
magic. Sitting at the back of the oversized living room
I was impressed to observe the manner in which Bob worked
the room and had the audience settle into comfortable viewing
positions.
Sheets
had a large, thin wooden table that served double duty in
containing his props as well as creating an ideal performance
surface. At no time did Bob sit at the table preferring
to keep his dominance as a performer and not blend in with
the guests. His casual but natty performing outfit was very
definitely sleeveless and eliminated any of those 'up his
sleeve' misconceptions that lay audiences love to harbor.
His trademark derby hat framed a face that seldom failed
to house a contagious smile.
Much
of Sheets' work fell into the category of stand-up sleight
of hand and was extremely visible to the entire room. On
the few occasions he delved into more traditional 'table
top' magic, the audience readjusted their sight lines accordingly.
On these occasions Bob made up for any loss in visibility
by extending the focus of his show to participants in the
action who sold the magical effects by their animated reactions
to the magic.
I
was sharply reminded by what a baffling effect The Professor's
Nightmare can be when a little thought is put into its presentation.
Bob's handling of this effect and The Color Change Silks
were ample proof that with some refined handling and subtle
deconstruction these classics have a huge entertainment
potential. In a gloriously twisted manner the rope from
the 'Nightmare' ended up being not quite cut and restored.
The length of rope did however add a lovely handling highlight
to an extremely original cards across routine. The rope
finally managed to penetrate Bob's body in a very clean
manner. Sound complicated? Not really but you probably had
to be there to fully follow the continuity, so I won't waste
more words.
Another
highlight of the show was Bob's signature Card Stab. There
are few effects that are more effective than a well-presented
card stab----and this one was a beauty! Watching the audience
crowd around Bob after the show many of them seemed to be
discussing this effect. It was certainly a perfect example
of strong comedy adding rather than subtracting from a clear
cut and highly focused effect. Bob's use of four cards allowed
the routine to routine to build very nicely and added to
the audience impact.
After
his closing effect Sheets received a well-deserved standing
ovation and was a wonderful addition to a well-planned and
highly enjoyable event. Bob's strong comedy and equally
powerful magic was a delightful compliment to his warm personality
and assured interaction with the audience. It was really
fun to be in his audience and I was deeply impressed by
such mastery of the art of in-home entertainment.
Oh,
and much as I loved the show Sheets followed the Golden
Rule of entertainment and left us all wanting more at the
end of his set, there is the mark of a true pro!

8. Chair Suspension: Plan B - #342 - By Kyle Peron
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kyle Peron (US)

http://www.kpmagicproducts.com
When performing the chair suspension illusion, there is
one problem that keeps coming up time and again from folks.
You get the child up there and they suddenly get nervous
or scared and so you are left in an awkward position.
Now
I always float the Birthday child when performed at those
types of events. This poses even more of an issue because
of the need to make them the star of the show. In most cases,
floating the child has become something I agreed to do.
Let
me go over some of what I do and have discovered that will
help you a great deal.
First
thing is you never ever force the trick on a child. You
must learn to read them and if at any moment you get a signal
that says "this is not right for them", you end
it right then and there. No exceptions. Do not force doing
the effect simply because of your love for it or because
you think you have to.
I
also never perform the illusion for children under 5 years
of age. That gets a bit borderline. You can do a 5 year
old but you must handle it carefully and correctly and be
prepared.
When
I bring a child up, the first thing I do is NOT immediately
place them on the illusion. Instead I do a little bit with
them first on their level. The aim of this is to get them
laughing and smiling. If they do, they build trust in me.
During this time, I am reading them. I am seeing if they
are calm and relaxed or tensed up.
Now
what should you do if the child is not right for the illusion
or gets scared? Well the one thing I never do is send the
kid back. That just makes them cry and feel bad and makes
me look a bit like the bad guy. However, I can also not
force them on the illusion.
If
I want them to be the star of the show, I can do that and
do it so successfully that the parents and client thanks
me time and again. This is not an ego thing but to how you
just how powerful this solution is to having a plan B.
Like
anything, the only person who knows what is to happen is
YOU. So if a child is scared or I cannot do it with them,
I go right into my plan B approach.
I
state that the child is so amazing that I want to do something
never done before. Because he/she is so incredible on this
day I am going to make THEM the magician and I will only
assist. THEY will use their magic to make a friend or sibling
float and they will do it themselves.
In
order to do this I give them a hat and I also give them
my jacket. I tell them with my jacket they are gaining my
magic as well. The hat keeps that magic locked inside. I
place it on them and smile. "Do you feel the magic?"
They always say yes and they feel wonderful.
"I
now am giving you the magic my friend and so I will only
help but YOU will do the magic and float your friend here."
I have them step to the side. I get the other person (usually
an older child who I know I can do it successfully with)
and have them lay down etc.
Now
I so all the handling I would normally do. However, all
the focus and attention is on the child. They will wiggle
their fingers or wave a wand at different times. The entire
time I am ensuring them that they themselves are doing the
magic. THEY are causing the child to float and not me. I
am empowering them through this process.
When
you do it this way, it is an amazing thing because they
are still made to look like the star of the show. You empower
them and it is still a great photo opportunity for the client.
You
never have to send a child back or make them feel bad. Instead
you immediately go into this plan B without any second thought
and so it looks planned. To the audience it looks like you
meant for that to happen all along.
Try
this out if you perform this illusion and I am sure you
will see just how wonderful this works.
I am happy to announce that my newest book, "FESTIVAL
MAGIC", is finished and is NOW available at http://www.kpmagicproducts.com

9. Magic - Art, Craft or Neither? (Alexandria The Great)
--------------------------------------------
Message by Anthony Darkstone
Europe/USA
During
this series, I have had many of the top names in the Industry
giving us their thoughts on this intriguing topic. Included
amongst those have been remarkable female performers such
as, Suzanne The Magician, Victoria Skye, etc. . . This week
we have the amazing (a very apt and carefully chosen adjective)
Alexandria The Great. She is not a Magical Entertainer in
the accepted use of the phrase. She is an Escape Artist.
Inspired by the movie,
"Houdini"
starring Tony Curtis, she, in a few short years, achieved
International renown as The World's Leading Female Escape
Artist. With many prestigious TV shows & Press to her
credit, she describes herself thus: "I've survived
escapes never attempted elsewhere: achieved several world
records: set myself apart in a niche dominated by men. Today,
my trademark escape is breaking out of a bulletproof cell
-but it only came about after I broke free of numerous other
"boxes" I've been willingly locked in over the
years (either by myself, others or society): "normal",
"female", "wife" "mother";
"too heavy" "too old", "not smart
enough", "not pretty enough", "girls
not allowed." . Writing in The Huffington Post, Jason
Hughes wrote, "Escape artist Alexandria the Great had
the judges and the audience at Radio City Music Hall on
the edges of their seats during her death-defying stunt.
It was the first live show of "America's Got Talent,"
and Alexandria certainly delivered in the entertainment
department.
You
can watch her demonstrate on YouTube & on her site.

Magic-
Art, Craft or Neither
.
Magic can be any of the above as it depends on what the
performer wants to show the audience. In its simplest form,
magic is either craft or art. Most novice magicians who
buy an effect only want to show a trick. To the general
public magic is trick execution. Elevating magic involves
more than simply execution. A true craftsmen or craftswomen
looks to perfect their illusion.
To
do so requires time and dedication, as the magician wants
the conjuring to appear easy and natural. To make something
look effortless takes an incredible amount of time and effort.
Many magicians are more than willing to put in such work
to have their audience appreciate the gravity of the effect
- their magic.
For
some, magic is more than just craft. Magic as art is not
simply to perform something flawlessly and effortlessly.
Though these efforts can be part of the recipe, sometimes
magic as art has little to do with the trick or illusion
itself. It has more to do with wanting to take their audience
to another place. To create something that gets their audiences
not to simply appreciate the skill on stage but lifts them
out of their seats and takes them on a journey. Magic as
art creates something new and allows the audience to not
only feel but experience the magic with the magician.
In
escapes, the goal of most escape artists is to get their
audience to the "edge of their seats." Not easy
to do nowadays with the sophistication of audiences, the
advent of the internet (where you can see anything and everything)
and the plethora of reality shows like Fear Factor who take
people and put them in "escape artist" mode and
they appear as stunts. So how do you standout? How to you
get your audience to appreciate your craft or art?
For
me, when I build my escapes, I always think of the audience.
I look not from the stage but from the house seats in deciding
what I will create. I need to understand how my audience
thinks and what they feel and see. In many ways, it is like
building a roller coaster. Essential elements like timing
and pace are vital in my art form.
When
building a roller coaster engineers do not simply start
their riders at the top of the coaster and drop them. A
good roller coasters starts off slow and builds tension.
The ride engineers take the riders up the first hill slowly
and deliberately. You hear every click and feel the car
shake, as the rider climbs laboriously up that first hill.
The riders are given plenty of time to experience the subtle
nuances and contemplate their fate.
I do the same with my escapes. I want my audience to fully
understand what I am about to go through and I invite them
to feel what I feel. This becomes the great challenge with
shows like America's Got Talent or TV in general; on TV,
it is difficult to have enough time to take an audience
on the full ride. On America's Got Talent, one of the biggest
challenges was not the execution of the escape but trying
to do my art in 90 seconds. It is more like a meal at a
fast-food place than a great restaurant. I feel escapes
or any form of magic, to be great or to be art, needs to
be a 4 course meal not a fast food drive thru. I prefer
my audience to appreciate the meal and savor the flavor,
not just gobble down fast food!
In
deciding to do America's Got Talent I thought deeply about
what I wanted to show and how I could show it well. My goal
was that my escapes needed to be art. To do so I thought
carefully about not just execution but creating something
new. Something that had not been done before.
There
is a great quote from the scholar and inventor Richard Buckminster
Fuller: "You never change things by fighting the existing
reality. To change something, build a new model that makes
the existing model obsolete."
I set out to do something that I hoped would elevate the
art form and make the old model obsolete. In my first escape,
I did my version of Houdini's Bride Jump. I call mine the
Underwater Leap of Faith as the escape is literally that
to me. Instead of putting on a pair of cuffs and a small
chain around my arms and jumping in like Houdini did I decided
to go further.
In
my version, I did handcuffs, leg cuffs, a small chain between
my hand and leg cuffs so I could not raise my hands to swim
to the surface. I then added a lead weigh belt and an additional
25 feet of chains and 8 padlocks. To create something new
and make the old version obsolete, I did the escape underwater
in full view and the kicker was just before I jumped in,
instead of sucking as much air as I can as every other escape
artist has done in an underwater escape, I blew my air out
going underwater on little to no air in my lungs!
Why
would I do such a thing? Because, merely jumping in and
escaping handcuffs or any amount of restraints had been
done before. Jumping in and blowing my air out - now that
was a first! Though we did what we could to show all the
restraints and tried to explain how this new version was
different, the only real way we could make my audience feel
was to ask them to blow their air out, raise their hands
and try and hold their breath with me. We also asked them
to put their arms down when they took a breath.
It
was amazing to see all the hands that were up including
2 of the judges and that after 45 seconds that all the hands
were down and I went another minute before I managed to
escape. To see the judges not only at the edge of their
seats but out of them was truly a moment I will cherish.
It is also fun to look at the YouTube response to the escape
and see how many people posted their breath hold times and
the genuine fear and concern they posted for me. I set out
to raise the bar and get my audience to come with me to
the bottom of the pool and by the responses they really
did.
I feel it is vitally important that when any artist performs,
they must create the experience that they want the audience
to have. This art form doesn't come from the stage but,
from the audience out. I attempt to bring my audience with
me on my journey. In the end, I hope to touch them in a
way that they had not expected and in its highest form,
create an experience that will be talked about for a long
time. My goal is always to elevate the art form and leave
people wanting more. Every performer should always strive
to not simply copy but, as Richard Buckminster Fuller so
aptly suggested, build a new model that makes the existing
model obsolete.

12. Shenanigans 2014 In Ireland
--------------------------------------------
Message by Gunnar Kr. Sigurjónsson,
Shenanigans
2014, The Irish Magic Convention, was held in Dublin, the
first weekend in May. About 200 magicians attended and had
a brilliant time.
In charge of planning and organizing were Brendan Byrne
and Nevin Cody
and what a great job those two did!
The
first session on Friday, was about Kids entertainment openers,
with Jeremy Le Poidevin, Quentin Renolds and Neville Wiltshire.
In the evening there was a close-up show with Bruno Copin,
Quentin Renolds, Ramón Riobóo, R. Paul Wilson
and David WIlliamson.
The Friday ended with the one and only Juan Tamariz - One
Man Show.
On
Saturday we had lectures with John Carey and Quinten Renolds.
Then lectures with Morgan & West, Bruno Copin, Ramón
Riobóo, John Archer and David Williamson. On Saturday
night we had a Banquet Dinner & Show with: Emcee John
Archer, Pat Fallon & Catherine, Morgan & West and
Quentin Renolds, followed by Late Night Live in the bar,
which was quite colourful.
Sunday
had lectures with Morgan & West, Joe Barry, R. Paul
Wilson and then of coures Juan Tamariz. The evening ended
with the Gala Show, starring: Andy James, Morgan & West,
John Archer, Graeme Shaw, Juan Tamariz. Emcee was Aonghus
McAnally.
Over
20 people signed up for a Juan Tamariz Masterclass on Monday
and it dragged for over 5 hours, with Juan warming up as
each hour passed. Fantastic!
As
you can see, The Shenanigans had a brilliant line-up and
it's safe to confirm that it was excellent! Everybody had
a fantastic weekend in Dublin and the sessions that went
into the wee hours, are perhaps some of the greatest moments
of magic, not to mention the bonding of friendship all around
the world. The next Shenanigans will be in 2017 and people
are already looking forward to it.

13. The "Wow" Factor Lecture At MINDvention
--------------------------------------------
Message by Danny Archer (us)
Charles
Gauci is one of Australia's foremost mentalists. For over
fifty years, he has entertained audiences in Australia and
around the world. A published author, Charles is the creator
of some of the best-selling effects in mentalism and magic
including Eye to Eye, Body Language, Houdini Card Mystery,
plus many others too numerous to mention.
His
latest lecture, "The Wow Factor", features effects
from his professional repertoire which are commercial, practical,
and most importantly easy to perform.
Each
of the effects will establish in the audience's mind that
the performer has a well above average mentality and will
condition them to accept that the miracles he performs are
genuine feats of a super mind. Charles has had a prolific
career as a creator and performer and he will be sharing
some of his original mentalism creations. The schedule is
bulging with great mentalism performers and creators and
there is one more special event I am working on. Stay tuned.

14. Final Curtain - Bob Bluemle
--------------------------------------------
Article forwarded on by Mel Kientz (US)
The
Arizona Republic
Robert
L. "Bob" Bluemle, 80, retired attorney and magician,
died Thursday, May 8th, surrounded by family in Williston,
Vermont.
The son of Orville Wesley Bluemle, newspaper editor, and
Marguerite Fadely, court clerk, organist and pianist, Bob
spent his youth in Anderson, Indiana, and Phoenix, Arizona.
He earned his bachelor's degree and MBA at Indiana University,
where he served as Student Body President and was voted
outstanding graduating senior in 1955.
He received his Juris Doctor from the University of Michigan
Law School in 1959. In 1960, Bob moved back to Phoenix with
his wife, actress Sarah Jane Miller, where he launched a
long and successful career in securities and tax law and
raised two daughters, Tiffany and Elizabeth. Together, Bob
and Sarah also had an active creative life, hosting international
theatre troupes, writing and producing variety shows for
the Arizona Bar Association, and helping to found the Scottsdale
Center for the Arts.
Known for his lightning-fast wit, mischievous sense of humor,
and dashing sartorial style, Bob's greatest passions were
magic, travel, photography, writing, and family. At the
age of ten, Bob discovered Bert Easley's Magic Shop, and
a young magician was born. Known to fellow performers as
Dr. Juris and to children as "Magic Uncle Bob,"
Bob specialized in close-up magic and mentalism.
Magic Uncle Bob
He was an active member and officer of the International
Brotherhood of Magicians, the Society of American Magicians,
and Ring 55 in Phoenix, and was a regular contributor to
magic periodicals, including The Linking Ring and M.U.M.
He also wrote film reviews and articles on travel, as well
as an unpublished biography of European magician, Dr. Stanley
Jaks. Bob's college stint as emcee of a USO show sparked
his love of travel that included visits to over 100 countries.
Robert's
tribute to Dr. Stanley Jaks on the cover of
M.U.M. magazine for magicians
An intrepid adventurer, he was especially drawn to places
of mystery or shamanism, among them Easter Island, Nazca,
Macchu Picchu, Stonehenge, Nepal, China, Africa, and Tibet.
By his own account, Bob found the greatest joy in being
a husband, father, and grandfather. He was both dignified
(rarely seen without a tie and blazer) and playful, whether
fashioning dancing ballerinas from table napkins or pulling
coins from a child's ear. An accomplished prankster while
on a tour of English crop circles, Bob wielded a cleverly
concealed laser pen to convince fellow tourists they were
seeing a UFO.
In 2001, Bob moved from Phoenix to Burlington, VT to be
closer to his family. He was predeceased by his daughters'
mother, Sarah Jane Miller, and his second wife, Carol Bidstrup.
He is survived by his daughters, Tiffany and Elizabeth Bluemle,
daughters-in-law, Liz Shayne and Josie Leavitt, and grandsons,
Will and Jake Shayne (all of Burlington, VT) and his last
romantic companion, Gloria Russell of California. Bob's
family is grateful to the amazing Dr. Karen Sokol and to
his many wonderful caregivers at Shelburne Bay, particularly
his trusted friend and caregiver Elizabeth Wathugi, and
the Vermont Respite House for their caring support of Bob
in his final years and days.
As a mid-career attorney
A tribute to Bob's life and spirit will be held in Burlington
on Sunday, June 8th from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. in the Lake Lobby
at Main Street Landing (entrance at the corner of Battery
and College Streets). Please let family members know if
you are planning to attend by emailing bobstribute@gmail.com.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to
the Vermont Respite House at 99 Allen Brook Lane, Williston,
VT 05495.

15. The Gimmick MagiZette, India
--------------------------------------------
Message by Salil Kumar 'Solyl' Kundu (India)
Regarding
the upcoming Issue of TGM-A tribute to Aldo Colombini-Our
Request to the All Magicians around the world.
Aldo Colombini has been a great friend since "the Magigram
days". The expression in quotation marks was Aldo's
favorite. Whenever we talked about Edwin and his Magigram,
Aldo used to mention that period with those three words.
Anyway, Aldo was, from the very beginning of The Gimmick
MagiZette, India's Premier and Ace Magic related e-zine-until
his last days the mainspring of this project.
Therefore,
keeping everything in mind, we all in TGM plan to pay our
homage to this gentleman magician whose heart was as big
as his physique. Our forthcoming issues-number six, Volume
Three of TGM; we plan to dedicate in memory of Aldo Colombini.
However,
without the support of YOU; it is not possible for us to
make it a successful venture. Especially those of you, who
personally knew this great magic artist, please do come
forward. We earnestly request you all, please send in your
view, your personal feelings, your comments, or whatever
you have to say about Great Aldo and want to add in the
Aldo issue of TGM. Please don't forget to include any photographs
of Aldo of any occasion that you have in your collection.
Magic fraternity along with TGM team will remain ever thankful
to you for your kind consideration.
Please
do remember that the deadline of submission is June 10th,
2014.
Thanks
in advance for your time and kind consideration in advance.

Kumar 'Solyl' Kundu solylkundu@gmail.com
P.S. In case you've not seen a copy of TGM, please ask me
without obligation.
