Free Internet Radio Show, Successful Performercast Launching April 25!

The Successful Performercast is the free internet radio show where host Kris Sheppard interviews one full-time professional entertainer per week with the goal of inspiring and equipping those who are working to make the leap themselves. This is a show for all performers whether you're a magician, a comedian, a juggler, or anything in between. You'll hear and learn from the pros that are actually out there making a living doing what they love.

I focus on questions designed to learn about each entertainer's journey, struggles and victories while at the same time drawing out inspiration and tangible business advice that will help our listeners build their own businesses as entertainers.

It's launching on Friday, April 25 with six available episodes and will continue to release an episode every Friday with a different entertainer. The first six episodes will feature interviews with magicians Shawn McMaster, Scott Wells, Simon Coronel, George Tovar, Kostya Kimlat, and juggler Lindsay Benner.

More info can be found at www.successfulperformercast.com, and after launch can be downloaded and subscribed to via the iTunes podcast store, Stitcher Radio,

4. Save A Chicago Magic Landmark
--------------------------------------------
Message by Neil Tobin

There's a magic landmark in Chicago that's in danger of demolition, and local magicians are trying to get a letter-writing campaign off the ground to help save it. Here's the story: the building at 1800 Halsted that once housed the original Schulien's is at risk of being demolished and is on the official list of Most Endangered Historic Sites in Illinois.

You know the name: for over four decades, Matt Schulien held court at its bar and pioneered what would be known as Chicago-style close-up bar magic. Books have been written about his contributions to the art. Magicians like Doc Eason and Bill Malone have carried his legacy to audiences throughout the world.

Local performer David Parr has been working with a grassroots preservation group to save the building, but they can't do it alone. Even though Alderman Michele Smith is on our side, she needs more ammunition to help persuade the developer of the site's significance.

Could you please invite your readers to send emails to Alderman Smith informing her as to why saving this historic site is important to the magic community? She can be reached via her assistant, Matthew Allee: Matthew@ward43.org

For further information about the issue, here's a recent article-http://www.dnainfo.com/chicago/20140407/lincoln-park/historic-black-duck-building-at-risk-of-losing-magical-legacy

6. Remarkable Magic #347 - Nick Lewin
--------------------------------------------
Message by Nick Lewin (US)

Five movies using magic that I loved.

I love magic but no more than I love the other two big M words---Movies and Music. Well this week I want to list five movies that utilized magic in a way that really impressed me, or that I just really enjoyed. As in all my top five lists I am trying to avoid a couple of the obvious choices in favor of slightly less populist selections. In other words, I'm not including 'The Prestige' or 'The Illusionist' in this list, both movies that really didn't connect with me as deeply as they seem to have done with so many others.

F for Fake.
This 1973 gem is my very favorite movie about magic, deception and illusion. It was directed and stars the great Orson Welles, who was a big fan, and sometimes practitioner, of the magical arts. There are a small group of movie buffs (myself included) that feel that this is one of the really great and TOTALLY underrated movies by Mr. Welles. There is a great deal of subtlety in the content and structure of this movie that will appeal to any magician.

As an exercise in the relationship of editing to magic and the implied magic of causal relationships in film making, this movie will definitely support several viewings before you even begin to grasp the tongue in cheek brilliance of its director and star. How do you begin to describe it? If you are smart you don't, you just point out that it exists and hope a few people who haven't seen the film get to discover it.

I remember during a party in our Las Vegas home getting into a deep conversation about the movie with Johnny Thompson who was deeply desirous of obtaining a copy. I deserted my party guests and dubbed a bootleg copy of my bootleg copy for John. As a further hint, if you really enjoy the movie then you may want to order a copy of Robert Anton Wilson's third book in his 'Cosmic Trigger' trilogy which is an amazing analysis of a truly amazing piece of movie making.

Having spent nearly half my column eulogizing a movie you have probably never heard of, let me cover a couple more quickly……

Houdini.
I have a very soft spot for this hokey old movie starring Tony Curtis as the seminal magician from so many of our childhoods. I saw it at just the right time and it totally stole my heart with its romanticism and Technicolor simplicity. Coupled with William Lindsay Gresham's great biography Houdini took his place in my heart and made my future as a magician inevitable.

You haven't seen the movie? Oh my God, get going! Cook up popcorn and perhaps make it a double bill with 'Dancing in the Rain,' and have a good old-fashioned movie night.

The Linguini Incident.
Here is an obscure one! Directed by the late Richard Shepard (father of my longtime friend and director Tony Shepard) the movie stars David Bowie and Rosanna Arquette. It is a light-hearted and romantic look at a Houdini obsessed character Monte, played by Bowie, and a robbery caper. Is it a great movie? Not really but it is a movie that I thoroughly enjoyed and you might well too.

Casino Royale.
No, not the great James Bond reboot starring Daniel Craig. I am talking about the 1967 comedy romp starring both Peter Sellers and David Niven as secret agent 007. The movie also featured cameos by an extraordinary cast of stars, including Orson Welles as the arch villain Le Chiffre. It is once again Mr. Welles who brings in the magic element, when he performs a magnificently theatrical Asrah illusion during the climatic casino scene in the movie. It had some real gravitas.

As a further reflection on the magic of editing it is worth pointing out that during this pivotal showdown between the characters played by Welles and Sellers the two actors refused to be in the studio at the same time! The movie was filmed at the height of Mr. Sellers 'crazy time' and he was something of a nightmare to work with, but this scene worked out pretty darn well in my opinion. The 15-year old version of me who saw this movie in the cinema when it was released just loved it and found it highly inspirational.

The Incredible Burt Wonderstone.
I know how universally hated this movie was by magicians in America-I just don't know why? My guess is that for many of us it really treated magicians in a very dismissive manner and with NO degree of awe or exaltation. I thought the film was consistently funny and nicely kept to a low key level. This is not a movie that went for big laughs, however I thought it kept the laughs going throughout at a nice pace. I particularly enjoyed Jim Carey's turn as Steve Gray, a 'street magician' who resembled David Blaine to a very high degree.

I loved the casually insensitive handling of Olivia Wilde's assistant/magician character Jane in the movie. I also thoroughly enjoyed Alan Arkin's role as Rance Holloway (I especially love the name) in the production. Hey, enough trying to justify a movie that was so thoroughly panned by magicians--- suffice to say, "It made me laugh!"

7. Festivals - Travel Distance - #338 - By Kyle Peron

Travel distance will be a big factor not in only what fees you charge but also how you market to these various festivals.

The first decision you must make is whether you want to sleep in your own bed at night or if you are willing to travel greater distances and stay at hotels. The choice really is yours and it is one you want to decide upon before you start your marketing efforts.

You must decide just what your festival performance area will be and how far you are willing to go to get there. I find that having a map and drawing a large circle from my home to the farthest area I am willing to work is a great way to start figuring out not only my travel radius but also travel fees. I call this zone mapping.

For myself, my travel radius is about 100 - 150 miles from my home base. I then draw circles in pen for every twenty miles out from my base. This is my way of gauging how far a festival is from me and how much I should add on for an appropriate travel fee. It also easily tells me if I may need to add a hotel fee for shows further away. I keep this map on the wall in my office and near my phone. It can be a great tool when you are making or taking a call.

There are many software programs and online apps that allow you to be able to customize maps for yourself. Use these as they are great tools. You might want to place the final zone map in an application called Dropbox.com so you have access to it wherever you go.

If you do make the choice to travel farther distances for your festival shows, then include hotel accommodations in with your contract and add this price to your day rate. The idea here is to still keep it simple for the festival group to make a decision. I find that adding the fee to my day rate makes it easier for them and does not confuse them. I have also found that many times some hotels are corporate sponsors of the event and the festival committee has access to some of these rooms. Free accommodations, everyone wins.

I don't believe that it is a good practice to offer a standard base fee + gas fee + travel fee + hotel fee. If you lay it out like this, it discourages festivals. It works against you. Learn what YOU need to do the show and create a base fee that covers all of your costs.

I have also experienced, at some of the larger festivals, that hotels in the area often sponsor the festival or fair you are attending. If you can, you can always ask or check on the festival website to see who the sponsors are for that year. If a hotel is a sponsor for the festival, you may be able to get the rooms comped for you as a means of promoting the local hotel that keeps you.

If you have a big hotel chain, with locations everywhere you plan to work, you could try to obtain them as a sponsor of your own. They not only supply you with the accommodations you need but pay so much money for each festival you perform at. In exchange, they get mention at every show you do. This can work well for you and you never know unless you ASK. I know this can happen, as I have seen it in my travels.

If you cannot get a sponsor for your hotel stay, then you may still want to try and keep your hotel room cost down. It is always a good idea to check into hotels in the area of the festival. A hotel that is both easy to get to and affordable, is most ideal. I say a close hotel, as often times you will not get out of the festival until the festival closes and you then get permission to enter the grounds with your vehicle to pack back up. This means it could be a long and tiring night. A hotel that is close works wonders for this situation.

When it comes to accommodations, you may not want to be too particular about where you stay. Lower rates have been the norm at some hotels if you do your homework prior to heading out on the road. Also, look into the entertainment books for the city or area that you will be performing for. If you are doing a tour and doing several festivals in the same area, these entertainment books can save you money on meals, hotels etc. Also, you may want to use your credit card rewards points if you have them. Most places will deduct a fee from your hotel stay and in some cases you may get the night for free.

AAA is another great idea for the festival performer who is traveling farther away from home for his or her shows. Not only will it save you in the event of a vehicle breakdown, but you can get some great savings on hotels, rental cars etc. I have AAA and have been very glad I have had it on many occasions.

Now do not get confused here. Many of you may be saying why doesn't the festival put you up at a hotel? Well some of them can and some may offer to do it. However, my goal is to make it easy on the festival. What I do is know ahead of time if I feel I have to stay overnight. This is often my choice and not the festivals. I am the one deciding if I need to stay or not.

Because of this, I try and make it easy on the festival. If I know I need a hotel room, I simply add it to my base fee when I offer my packages to the festival. By doing it in this fashion, I can choose the hotel I want to stay in and make it easy for myself and for the festival in the process.

I am happy to announce that my newest book, "Festival Magic", is finished and is NOW available at http://www.kpmagicproducts.com/Festival_Magic.html This 112pg book is filled with the most up to date information on how anyone can work and succeed in the festival and fair markets.

As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you.
