3. Copperfield Magic Museum - Zaney Blaney Ladder Levitation
--------------------------------------------
Message by Walter Zaney Blaney (US)
My
original Zaney Blaney Ladder Levitation is going into what
amounts to the Smithsonian Institute Museum of Magic. But
even better, it's going into the "David Copperfield
International Museum and Library of the Conjuring Arts"
in Las Vegas. David and I are both extremely happy that
my illusion will have a perfect "resting place"
for centuries to come.
It's
my original prop I created in 1965, in the original fiber
cases that traveled the world over with me for 43 years,
was seen on all my TV appearances, and is now a part of
magic history. David convinced me to build the first copy
for his 1986 China TV Special, and he kept it in his road
shows for four years straight. He still occasionally puts
it in his nightly shows at the Hollywood Theater in the
MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas.
If
you wish, please take a look at this link:
http://www.cbsnews.com/pictures/david-copperfields-museum-of-magic/
It's a picture tour through the museum by Copperfield himself
for a CBS News program.
(Click
on arrows at the center of the right and left borders of
the first picture to see all the photos and an explanation
of what is being shown.)
David
recently gave me a personal three hour tour of his museum,
and I was in awe at the size and scope of so many original
props of the past greats of magic. It was a real feast for
my eyes, just an unbelievable collection, beautifully presented
in room, after room, after room.

4. Potter & Potter Auctions Catalog Now Online

the collection of John Salisse, MIMC - and a few great objects

6. Remarkable Magic #344 - Nick Lewin
--------------------------------------------
Message by Nick Lewin (US)
Five
really great Tricks.
There
are so many great tricks that I have seen over the years
that compiling my list of five greatest tricks this week
is going to prove another very tough experiment in exclusion!
I decided to continue in my previous footsteps as I compose
my list and to keep the list highly personal and based on
the impact that they hit me with as performed by specific
performers.
The
Zig Zag Lady.
While I am not much of a fan of Grand Illusion I would have
to say that this effect is truly a classic and deserves
to be very close to the top of my list. The reason is simple,
it really, really fooled me for many years, and I just couldn't
get my mind around a solution. Eventually after seeing enough
mediocre versions I tumbled to all the subtleties involved.
I still wish I hadn't.
As
presented originally by its creator, Robert Harbin this
was an amazing visual mystery. The manner in which he presented
it had a great deal to do with the stunning impact. In a
low key and casual manner Harbin would assemble the prop
onstage, in front of the audience, before he presented it.
This was amazingly strong theatre and made the trick even
more astounding than it would otherwise have been. I have
never seen anyone present the Zig Zag better than Harbin.
Micro
Macro.
I first witnessed this masterful piece of magic performed
by Jon Tremaine in the magic shop on Tottenham Court Road
in London. He fooled me so much that I couldn't believe
I would be able to perform it myself after I purchased it.
I got the trick home and was amazed at how simple Bro John
Hamman's thinking was in achieving such an amazing effect.
It was simple but oh so subtle. Would it actually fool anyone
when I presented it myself? After a little practice the
answer was YES-everyone.
Years
later I was fooled all over again by the same trick when
I saw Ron Wilson perform it in the Close-Up Gallery in the
Magic Castle. When Ron stood up at the completion of the
trick it was a total mind blowing experience to me. It was
a perfect blend of performer and material.
Card
Under Ashtray.
I don't think I have ever witnessed finer misdirection than
standing around in Davenports Magic Shop in London watching
Pat Page improvise around this effect. It was a lesson in
magic that I will never, ever forget. It was one of the
first times that I realized the incredible effectiveness
of being able to repeat an effect. Every time my card arrived
under that overflowing ashtray on the counter I gasped in
amazement at Pat's ability to break one of magic's Ten Commandments
as demonstrate the power of repetition made possible by
faultless technical skill.
The
Vanishing Birdcage.
I am not much of a fan of this effect generally speaking,
mostly because it usually doesn't look that much like a
real birdcage. Couple that with the incredibly unnatural
manner in which the cage needed to be handled and it ended
up leaving me cold, until I saw it performed by Billy McComb.
There is a wonderful video of Billy performing it on YouTube
that perfectly captures his masterful presentation.
The
freedom with which the cage was handled in the method McComb
used was the first quantum leap forward in his routine.
Without going into details, the amended prop and the handling
it allowed just put the trick into another league. The finishing
touch was the way the cage seemed to vanish under a translucent
handkerchief, it was so much more effective than the standard
vanish. When that silk floated gently to the ground the
illusion was perfect.
The
Broomstick Levitation.
To watch Richiardi perform this effect was a pure magical
treat of the highest order, however I am going to focus
here on another performer and his remarkable handling of
this seminal piece of magic. That magician is Piet Paulo
and unlike most of the other performers I have listed here
I am happy to say he is still with us, although sadly no
longer performing on a regular basis. You will have to wangle
an invitation to his grandson's next birthday party if you
want to catch this legend performing.
Piet
had a handling of this classic effect that was a masterpiece
of angles. Every movement and the placement of each and
every prop were psychologically and esthetically perfect
to maximize the illusion. I must have seen him present the
broomstick live on scores of occasions and it never failed
to give me a thrill. The way he handled the applause points
in the effect are a lesson in showmanship that bears a great
deal of study by aspirant magicians.

7. Festivals - Be A Solutions Provider - #335 - By Kyle
Peron
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kyle Peron (US)

http://www.Facebook.com/perondesign
Too many entertainers hit the festival market with how great
they are. This is fine to be proud of yourself and your
show, but if I am a festival person, I want and need more
than that. I need and want someone who I can benefit from
and who can solve some of the problems I am faced with each
year. I need what is called a "Solutions Provider".
A solutions provider becomes very valuable to your client
and your perceived value in their eyes becomes much greater.
To many festival clients, an entertainer is nothing more
than another product they pay for, use, and throw away when
they are done. It is sad to think of it this way, but this
is very often the case. As an entertainer who wants to keep
working with these festivals year after year, I have come
to learn that building relationships with these clients
means I have to become more than just a product to them.
I have to add value to what they do. I have to listen to
their needs, meet their needs and show them how they can
benefit from this.
A festival prospect wants someone who understands that their
festival committee is doing the jobs of 15 people but 3
people to do it. They want someone who can understand that
on any given day, their committee and helpers are pulled
in 15 different directions.
Remember that the art of success in festivals is to always
listen to the prospect. In listening, you can really find
out what their needs are and change a negative into a positive
by being a total solutions provider. Being a solutions provider
does not mean that you have to give in completely without
getting anything in return. It simply means to listen to
what they say, find out their needs and offer a mutual solution.
I have found that there are various degrees of entertainment
at the festivals I work. These range from wonderful and
fantastic performers to those you wonder how they even tied
their shoes in the morning. I have found that it really
does vary but it seems like it is the smaller festivals
that are more likely to have the entertainment that is questionable.
The reason for this is that the local festivals are usually
put together by a volunteer group that changes from year
to year. These people are not sure of what entertainment
is out there or how to go about finding it. They often will
use references from friends or relatives and this does not
always lead to quality.
However, this is a great thing for us festival magicians.
By this, I mean that we can be a solutions provider for
them easily. They are often very happy and eager to get
my information and I can provide solutions they are wanting
and craving.
The local festivals I have found are often committee based.
Most of them are more than willing to not only want your
information but any solutions you can provide to them to
make their jobs even easier. This is a great way to build
a relationship with these folks early on.
Train yourself to listen to their needs and you can also
use this line. "What can I provide to you for next
year that can really help make your festival event the very
best that it can be?" or...
"I know how tough it is putting together entertainment
for your festival each year and I would love to help make
it easier for you if I can. I have performed at numerous
festivals just like yours over the years and perhaps my
knowledge might be of help to you in solving some of your
issues or problems. PLEASE feel free to let me help you
if I can be of service."
This usually always gets them talking. Most of the time
they want to talk to someone about everything they have
to do. LET THIS HAPPEN! This is a gold mine for you if they
start talking about other things. It allows you to listen
in and to solve the problems that they mention. Through
this process you not only get in for the entertainment but
you can often times help them through other services you
can provide.
I am happy to announce that my newest book, "FESTIVAL
MAGIC", is finished and is NOW available at http://www.kpmagicproducts.com/Festival_Magic.html.
This 112pg book is filled with the most up to date information
on how anyone can work and succeed in the festival and fair
markets.

thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or
suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly

Magic
- Art, Craft or Neither? - Part 2 of 2
Now
consider a magician's performance of, let's say, "The
Miser's Dream." It's a fairly easy effect that many
beginning magicians perform, and must be crafted correctly
or the audience will figure out how it's done and that could
spoil the mystery for them. A creative, talented magician,
however, can turn The Miser's Dream into a masterpiece.
The basics are the same whether an amateur or an accomplished
magician perform it; what makes the effect compelling and
memorable is the patter, story, drama and, in some cases,
staging or costumes.
Magicians
attend conferences, conventions, lectures, and symposiums
where they see many of the same effects and illusions that
they've seen before, but they go to the events to appreciate
and learn from the artistry of various performers: the clever
patter, the smart, stylish psychological and physical misdirection,
audience reaction, and how individual magicians tailor the
delivery to put their own particular spin on it. This artistry
is where the fun comes in and makes a performance impressive
and outstanding; and if you're the magician on stage, your
artistry makes your performance more profitable in terms
of great reviews, repeat business, and further opportunities.

12. Michael Jackson Hologram Conjures Billionaire's Patent
Lawsuit
--------------------------------------------
Article forwarded on by Mel Kientz (NZ)
The
Reporter
By
Eriq Gardner
Isaac
Brekken/Getty Images
"Michael Jackson: One"
Two years ago, a hologram of Tupac Shakur at the Coachella
Music Festival had people wondering about what might be
next in concert possibilities. Now, the technology that
created the spectacle has landed in the hands of a noteworthy
billionaire: Alki David, the eccentric one who attempted
to transform the television business with streaming technology
before Aereo stole his thunder and TV broadcasters unleashed
their legal guns on him.
Now, David finds himself on the flip side of the intellectual
property coin. His Film On and hologram-maker Musion are
the plaintiffs in a lawsuit filed on Monday against Cirque
du Soleil and MGM Resorts for allegedly infringing patents
to create a hologram used in the final scene of Michael
Jackson: One, the resident acrobatic production at Mandalay
Bay Theatre in Las Vegas.
MORE
PHOTOS: Inside Cirque's New Las Vegas Thriller 'Michael
Jackson One' http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/gallery/inside-cirque-s-new-las-576686
The
complaint filed in California federal court begins with
some history.
"In 1862, John Pepper and Henry Dircks invented 'Pepper's
Ghost,' an illusion technique, which, over the last 150
years, has appeared in movies, concerts, magic shows and
amusement park rides," says the lawsuit. "Today
a new incarnation of Pepper's Ghost exists -- Musion Eyeliner
technology. Musion Eyeliner uses a patented system to project
three-dimensional images virtually indistinguishable from
real life bodies."
David was apparently impressed upon seeing the technology
being used to create the deceased rapper Tupac appearing
on stage with Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg. He says he recently
bought the exclusive license to Musion's patent and has
started up a company called Hologram USA with a showroom
at the Film On Studios on Canon Drive in Beverly Hills.
Why? He's got plans. "We already agreed on hologram
performances with Flo Rida and the late Amy Winehouse,"
he says. "Many other shows are coming."
But
first comes some score-settling about who owns rights to
hologram technology. David says he's about to file a slew
of lawsuits. This Michael Jackson one is the first. The
new lawsuit mentions two patents at issue: One for a device
for displaying moving images in the background of a stage
and one for a projection apparatus and method for pepper's
ghost illusion.
"Although it has been widely acknowledged that Defendants
employ the technology to create a three-dimensional hologram
of Michael Jackson in Cirque du Soleil's Michael Jackson:
One, Defendants do not possess a valid license to practice
that technology."
The show has been enormously successful and has helped the
Michael Jackson estate reap almost a billion dollars in
revenue since the King of Pop's passing in 2009. The lawsuit
claims that since the technology behind the Tupac hologram
got so much press attention, the defendants knew or should
have known the system was patented. The plaintiffs demand
an injunction and maximum damages for willful infringement.
The hologram is the climax of the 26-scene show, which never
has a performer portraying Jackson onstage. Instead, the
show strategically uses video and audio footage of the singer
throughout the plot's peaks and valleys.
"His presence, even on video, is so powerful, that
it can be very tricky to use him," Welby Altidor, One's
director of creation, told The Hollywood Reporter (THR)
just before the show's opening in May 2013. "What we
wanted to do in this show is build Michael's presence through
his voice and feeling his shadow, to feeling him progressively
becoming more and more present throughout the show, until
we can create the longing. And then the apex, the moment
where we'll really feel that he's there and he's still with
us."
THR
has reached out to Cirque du Soleil and will update with
any response.
Meanwhile, the hologram technology has landed in the hands
of a Hollywood bad boy with a taste for the outrageous.
David tells THR, "This is by far the most exciting
business opportunity I have ever seen. Imagine running 100
meters against Usain Bolt or resurrecting Richard Pryor!"
