2. Auction of The Le Grand David Spectacular Magic Show
--------------------------------------------
Le Grand David Spectacular Magic Company
Sunday, February 23rd, 10AM
For
over 35 years (February 1977 - May 2012), Marco the Magi's
production of Le Grand David and his own Spectacular Magic
Company delighted audiences of all ages in downtown Beverly,
becoming a New England institution. In 1999, the Guinness
Book Of World Records established that Beverly's wonder-working
troupe held the world record for the longest running stage
magic production. Le Grand David and his own Spectacular
Magic Company has been called "the Greatest Magic Show
of the last hundred years."
Featuring Marco the Magi, Le Grand David and a large performing
ensemble, the production premiered on February 20, 1977.
Three years later they were featured in a two-page spread
in Time Magazine (5/12/80), which garnered them national
and international recognition. The Le Grand David Spectacular
Magic Company was also featured in National Geographic,
The Christian Science Monitor and declared "The Best
Magic Show in the World" by Yankee Magazine.

3. What Does Karl Hein And Marc Salem Have In Common?
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, A.I.M.C. with Silver Star
Last
week on The Magic Word, Karl Hein sat down to record a podcast
about his approach to creating close-up magic. This week
Marc Salem (featured performer/lecturer at the upcoming
East Coast Mind Jam) talks about mentalism, performing in
legitimate theaters around the world, The Legendary 13,
Max Maven, working on television and much more.
Both
of these podcasts and more are available on The Magic Word
Podcast at http://TheMagicWordPodcast.com

4. March Issue of MAGIC Magazine
--------------------------------------------
Message by Stan Allen - Editor MAGIC Magazine
It's
a pleasure to feature Ryan Oakes on our March cover. He
seems to have it all: good looks, good magic - and he's
a really good guy! When he's performing, all three of these
come together. It's no wonder that his success continues
to grow each year.
This month, for the third month in a row, we take you behind
the scenes on a new television show. How exactly does a
creative game played by a few young magicians end up being
a pilot for the Syfy channel?
Also, we have the story of a woman who is not only starring
in her own illusion show, she's producing two other illusion
shows - also starring female magicians.
Then there's the amazing phenomenon of Rupert's Drops. These
teardrop-shaped glass droplets with a long tail can be pounded
with a hammer without breaking. Yet, when the tail is snapped
off, the droplet shatters into fine, dust-like glass particles.
It's all in the March 2014 issue of MAGIC Magazine
plus a lot more!

5. Paul Daniels - Re-Inventing The Wheel
--------------------------------------------
Message by Paul Daniels (UK)
I
confess I have never been one for remembering who invented
what when it comes to magic tricks. I am much more interested
in how to make stuff entertaining.
That
is not to say that I think it is right to take someone's
invention and steal it or to steal a routine that another
performer has honed by going through the process of self
observation and audience reactions. Indeed, after months
of thinking about the Nemo Rising Cards and getting it to
a standard I thought was right on my first performance of
this wonderful routine the club manager told me that another
pro had performed it the previous week so I dropped it immediately.
There's
a ton of magic out there. Why do the same stuff as another
pro?
For
this last tour I wanted to force a four figure number and
there are many number switching pads out there, some of
which by any stretch of the imagination, could never be
described as looking 'normal'.
I
also wanted to avoid any electronic stuff because in conversations
with audience members I know they suspect those props as
being magical anyway. Offices now have OCR machines for
handwriting and so whatever I was going to use had to be
OBVIOUSLY ungimmicked.
In
my search I came across an old identity card/bus pass holder
and the idea of using it for the old 'Gone to Lunch' effect
came to mind. I cut up card to fit the holder and I have
been using this apparently simple gimmick ever since, very
successfully.
Last
night, whilst tucked up in my bed, I was reading a book
published in 1977 and damn me there was EXACTLY the same
holder converted to use in almost EXACTLY the same way and
for EXACTLY the same purpose.
I
know I read this book when it first came out and I now believe
that somewhere in the back of my brain I must have thought
it was a good idea and stored it away for future use. I
did not invent it, I re-invented it.
Now
I suppose I should write and thank the author, who just
happens to be my longest and best friend Graham Reed. If
your son Tim shows you this Graham, don't expect royalties...

6. Remarkable Magic #339 - Nick Lewin
--------------------------------------------
Message by Nick Lewin (US)
The
next Five 'New Rules for Magicians.'
Here
is the second half of my top-ten list of 'New Rules for
Magicians.' As I mentioned last week I was lucky enough
to work with 'New Rules
' creator Bill Maher in the
early days of his career.
The
first time I met Bill Maher was on an evening that I was
acting as M.C. at the iconic LA nightclub 'The Horn'. I
was in the green room discussing the running order with
the club's booker when I spotted an unfamiliar name. I asked
the booker in what I hoped was a suitably quizzical manner;
"What exactly is a Bill Maher?" At that moment
a short and rather crumpled chap walked through the door
and with a big smile said; "I am you A%?@#$ !"
I have been a big fan ever since.
Rule
#6
If you aren't funny don't tell jokes. Not everyone is funny.
This is an honest to God truth: believe me I know I was
there once when Franz Harrary added a dash of verbal comedy
to his act. Comedy may not be pretty but it shouldn't be
painful. If you are not a naturally funny performer then
put away that Bob Orben joke book and instead find a trick
that creates a situation which is humorous.
New
Rule #7
Take a good look in the mirror and decide the kind of performer
you actually look like. Not what you want to look like but
what you actually look like. Don't fool yourself-your job
is to fool the audience! Make a realistic appraisal of what
you see in that mirror and perform accordingly. Of course
if you look at yourself in the mirror too early in the morning,
without shaving and are wearing the clothes you slept in-well
hey, maybe that David Blaine thing is the way to go.
New
Rule #8
Just because you paid a bunch of money for a prop doesn't
mean you have to extract an additional amount of time from
it in your show. In spite of owning that solid gold thumb
tip you bought from Joe Stevens (which was individually
crafted by Joe Porper and modeled on Pete Biro's actual
digit) you don't have to stretch the cigarette in jacket
to 30 minutes.
Use that one of a kind prop in the manner in which it was
intended: keep it in a box at home and only show it to magicians
to make them jealous.
Rule
#9
Don't treat your audience like idiots! Your job is to deceive
and the spectator's is to be deceived. There is no need
to assume that an audience is comprised of morons just because
they fulfill their half of the mutual bargain. Be grateful
they know the rules. Let's be honest you might not want
them to really tell you how deceptive your double lift is
after they have seen it 4 or 5 times in the course of a
routine.
Rule
#10
If they ask for 20 minutes then do 20 minutes! Go on be
a professional, there may be a reason that they asked for
20 minutes. Because you are going over well does not constitute
a better reason for doing 40 minutes. It is a fine exercise
in self-discipline to stick to your running time and at
worst will result in you getting home 20 minutes earlier
and/or not irritating the act who has to follow you
Thank
you for working through this list with me. I was highly
gratified by how many emails I got about last week's column
and if you are still interested I will add some bonus new
rules in the future just for good measure.

7. Manipulation for Kid's Shows - #330 - Kyle Peron

Message by Kyle Peron (US)

There
was a discussion that came up the other day about if anyone
did manipulative magic for kids. I said, "Yes I do
and I have a blast doing it." Of course I got the look
on others faces like I was insane or stupid. Perhaps they
know me too well. In all seriousness, I do it but the reason
why is because it is first not about me or stroking my ego.
It is about the child and it is HOW I do it.
The idea when doing billiard balls for kids is that you
can NOT do it as a show of skill only. Kids really do not
care and will eat you alive if you plan on attempting to
do it this way.
To
kids, a show of skill only triggers in their brains the
chance that the magician is trying to fool me and so I must
try to yell and scream every idea I have as to what is going
on.
Kids
do not want to be fooled. Kids want to have fun, to laugh,
to giggle and to be entertained. With this in mind, your
manipulations and routine has to have those qualities in
it.
Kids
use their own imaginations and live in this imaginary world.
Use your own imagination to make your manipulative routine
fun and have the qualities I mentioned above. You will find
the routine goes over much better. It suddenly is not about
showing off but becomes maybe a story being told through
the use of manipulation.
It really all comes down to presentation. Over the years
I have learned to realize that kids really enjoy the journey
we take them on more than the actual final effect itself.
So I always try to make the journey part of any routine
as fun and humorous and entertaining as I possibly can.
I
also realized that if I do manipulation in a kid's show
that I really must present it differently. Me standing there
showing off every move I know only impresses myself, does
NOTHING for the kids at all. It really bores them to tears
because there is no involvement with them. There is no interaction,
comedy or anything and so they are not quite sure how to
react to it.
Now
if you take the same ball and all of a sudden (this stated
as example only) you call it a friendly Martian and he always
beams up inside your little box or hat. And you tell this
story about this Martian and how he is bashful (color change
to red). And how he disappears when he is in the dark (your
hand or a silk), now you have created engagement.
In
other words, if you add more to it and change it around,
you suddenly give the kids something to grab a hold of and
something to have fun with. The kids love stories and love
their imaginations. Why not use this to your own advantage.
People
too often over think routines. The reason for this is that
we cannot stop thinking like a magician and think like a
lay person. Our minds are tuned to what great move I can
use and what prop would be cool. Instead we should be thinking,
"what is the best routine I can come up with and how
can I present this routine so that it is fun and most of
all entertaining to the kids I am performing it to?"
Also,
remember that kids live in a magic world. Everything around
them is magic. How the TV turns on is magical. We often
forget this. Because of this we can conclude that kids also
have a BIG imagination and love to use it if we as magicians
encourage them to do so. So use this imagination in developing
your routines.
It
is not so much of a stretch for kids to associate that the
billiard ball is not a billiard ball. The ball can be anything
from a Martian that turns red because he blushes a lot...
to a molecule in my science project that just does not want
to stay on my project. I mean it really can be anything
as long as I state that it is so. Kids will relate and use
their imaginations and go along with the fun.
Each
person has to decide what is right for them. However, if
you perform for as many young children as I do, you learn
to realize that it is not so much the "WOW" as
it is the journey you take them on. They want to laugh and
giggle and smile and have fun. Young children enjoy the
journey just as much as the magic if not more so. To a young
child a billiard ball means nothing to them. Vanishing it
means even less. You have to make it fun and engaging. =)
To
a child, a Martian is funny just as much as taking a ball
and calling or given it a human name. It is psychology of
a child. Watch children at play and you will see what I
am talking about.
As
always I would love to hear from you. Please feel free to
contact me at magic4u02@aol.com. I look forward to it.

12. Disillusioned: Confessions Of A Serial Magician
--------------------------------------------
Message by Matt Marcy (US)
For
the last several months - in between my regular shows -
I've been pouring my life into a new project called Disillusioned:
The Series. I've taken my magic-theater show (Disillusioned:
Confessions of a Serial Magician) and adapted it into a
web series that will be filmed this summer. I'm really proud
of it, and I've already got a fantastic director and production
team assembled.
Please
take a moment to check it out, learn about the series, watch
the trailer, and see how you can help make it happen at:
http://kck.st/disillusioned
It'd
mean the world to me if you'd help spread the word by simply
clicking the "Share" and "Tweet" buttons
on the page in that link (just below the video). Just two
clicks makes a HUGE difference.
And,
if you decide to become a backer of the series, I (and everyone
involved) will be forever grateful. Like forever, ever.
Thanks
so much for supporting my new project!

we offer. Another is if subscribe for one year, or renew,
or add one year to your subscription, you can get Ricky

The
digital edition of the March issue of Genii, the largest
selling magic magazine in the world, is now live.
*
The legendary Lubor Fiedler is on our cover. Complimenting
him on his creativity is like pointing at a gold nugget
and saying it's worth a lot of money: we all know it. Dustin
Stinett found time to write this month's feature on Lubor's
remarkable, difficult, sometimes heartbreaking story that
has the happiest of endings. The article includes three
videos.
*
Performing for teenagers
I remember it with horror.
Danny Orleans, has made performing for them one of his many
specialties. This issue, Mac King interviews Mr. Orleans
on this very specialized area in advance of the release
of a three DVD set The Art of Presenting Magic to Teenagers.
The article includes a video excerpt from the DVD set.
*
Roberto Giobbi begins a multi-part exploration of magic
theory in his new "Genii Session." (And it could
go on for a while
his recent Penguin Live lecture
ran for just over five hours!)
*
David Kaye knows all about stooging with children, and he
gives it all away in Free Stooges in this month's "Expert
at the Kids' Table."
*
Speaking of children, Tom Stone morphs into yet another
persona this month with a routine guaranteed to send the
little ones shrieking as they run from the room in "Lodestones."
*
Can't seem to get enough tricks with cannibals devouring
innocent pasteboards. On our smorgasbord this month is Chris
Kenner's "King Balloo's Feast" as we continue
our resurrection in the "Magic Man Examiner Vault."
*
Jonathan Pendragon seems positively calm (by comparison)
in the second installment of "Panmagium," where
he manages to meld Neil Gaiman, the Big Bang Theory, Charles
Dickens, Tom Stone, Lon Chaney, Sr., and Charlie Chaplin
into an intellectual phantasmagoria.
*
John Gaughan talks about an old wooden box in "Chamber
of Secrets." It's mahogany and birds fly out of it.
Yes, it's odd.
*
Less odd are the tricks in this month's "Magicana,"
as Andi Gladwin contributes a nice piece of mentalism from
Luke Jermay; Jon Racherbaumer tunes in to the Tokyo Workshop
for a piece of mentalism by Kazu Katayama involving dinner
rolls; and Ian Kendall gives us a good old fashioned card
routine.
*
Daniel Ulin returns this month for his regular "Knights
at The Magic Castle" in the Academy of Magical Arts
in Genii, with a potpourri of quotes from The Castle's denizens
and also a photo of Ozzy and Sharon Osborne
a non-sequitor,
indeed. There's a video in the digital issue of Daniel interviewing
Todd Robbins on the set of "Play Dead."
*
We'll tie it all up with reviews by John Lovick-looking
at books, David Oliver-looking at tricks, and Dustin Stinett-looking
at videos (his eyes now forcibly held open by bobby pins).
That's
our issue for March and hope you enjoy it! Printed copies
are, of course, already in the mail.
And
if you renew, or add one year to your subscription you can
get Ricky Jay's new DVD "Deceptive Practice" for

59
--------------------------------------------

News Press
Jeffrey
"Jeff" William Busby, 59
At
his home in Wallace, Idaho, beloved husband, son and brother,
Jeffrey "Jeff" William Busby, 59, passed away
Feb. 10, 2014. He was born Feb. 23, 1954 in Arvida, Quebec,
Canada; Jeff is the son of Colin "Buzz" and Mary
(Halasz) Busby.
At
age seven, Jeff borrowed a library book on stage magic and
was astonished to discover, "I could lie and cheat
honestly." Jeff contributed his first article to a
magic publication in 1969, a new technique that won the
prize for "Best Card Trick of the Year." By age
17, his sleight-of-hand performances earned him a reputation
as a "magician's magician," baffling well-known
experts with his creations.
Jeff
attended and graduated from Oakland High School of Oakland,
Calif. in 1972. He then attended Merritt College, Laney
College and the University of California, Berkeley.
Jeff
formed his own company in 1974, initially selling antiquarian
books. Since then, he has written and published more than
500 articles, 50 plus books and monographs; receiving many
prestigious awards for his work. One of magic's foremost
historians, Jeff 's writings are woven with history, giving
the reader a full understanding of how the technique or
theory is intertwined with the past.
Jeff
was a security consultant to numerous casinos in California
and Nevada, teaching how to detect cheating methods. He
also lectured on Counter Deception and the Detection of
Deception at Navel Postgraduate School, Monterey, Calif.
and in the Washington, D.C. area.
Jeff
married Victoria "Vicki" Grismer on Oct. 15, 1988
in Guasti, Calif. They moved to the Silver Valley in 1991
from Oakland, Calif.
He
owned and operated Jeff Busby Magic of Wallace -- an international
mail order business for professional magicians all over
the world.
Nothing about Jeff was ordinary. He had passion and a unique
way of looking at things. Not one to take short cuts, Jeff
put his heart and soul into everything he did. Audiences
found his performances moving and memorable.
Jeff
loved and enjoyed spending time with his beloved wife Vicki,
their beloved hedgehog "Pokey", and enjoyed listening
to all kinds of music. An avid reader, he loved to learn
and share his knowledge with others.
Jeff
is survived by his wife Vicki Busby of the family home of
Wallace; his parents Colin "Buzz" and Mary Busby
of Oakland, Calif.; his brothers and sister Colin Busby
and (Melody Tannam) of San Leandro, Calif., Margaret Lianne
(Rick) Murray of Missassauga, Ontario, Canada and Stuart
(Patricia) Busby of Rancho Cordova, Calif.; He is also survived
by several nieces and nephews and his beloved hedgehog Pokey.
A
Celebration of Jeff's Life will be held on Saturday, Feb.
22, 2014 at 11 a.m. at the Silver Valley Church of the Nazarene
of Kellogg. A reception and a gathering of family and friends
will be held at the Church Fellowship Hall following services.
The
family suggests that memorials may be made to Doctors Without
Borders, 333 7th Ave., 2nd Floor, New York, New York 10001-5004
or to the Wallace Public Library, c/o Wallace City Hall,

Valley Church Of The Nazarene, 631 S. Division Street, Kellogg,
