3. Alex Ramon - Man In Motion
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, A.I.M.C. with Silver Star
On
a recent visit to South Lake Tahoe, California, I visited
with Alex Ramon who is currently starring in his one man
show "Illusion Fusion" at the Horizon Casino.
Only in his mid-twenties, Alex has been seen by more audiences
than most magicians have in a lifetime. After winning the
Lance Burton Award, he later was tapped to co-star with
Brad Ross in a worldwide two year tour in "Disney Live!
Presents 'Mickey's Magic Show'".
Kenneth
Feld then offered Alex the Ringmaster position in the Ringling
Bros. Barnum & Bailey Circus "Zing Zang Zoom"
which had a magic theme. So for the next two years Alex
was the "Zingmaster" presenting magic for thousands
of spectators every day across the U.S.
Not
one to slow down, Alex just completed his second year at
the Horizon Casino with the "Illusion Fusion"
show. Learn how he accomplished all this and more on the
two part podcast of The Magic Word at http://TheMagicWordPodcast.com

4. Dean Hankey - The "Dean" of Success
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, A.I.M.C. with Silver Star
Dean
Hankey chats on this week's The Magic Word Podcast about
finding financial success with your magic. Dean leads webinars
and conferences on the subject, but here he tips a couple
great ideas that you can easily and immediately incorporate
into your marketing mix. Among other great ideas, he talks
about engaging with potential clients and how to ask the
right questions to maximize your financial success while
building a long term, mutually beneficial relationship with
that customer.

6. Remarkable Magic #336 - Nick Lewin
--------------------------------------------
Message by Nick Lewin (US)
Pop
and me in the Junkyard.
I
am very excited to be working a rare public gig in Los Angeles
next week on 5th February. It is going to take place in
Simi Valley, and it is part of the entire wave of Magic
Dinner Theatre that is taking place currently in the States.
I am really jazzed to be part of the opening of an entirely
new magic event, 'Junkyard Magic.'
The
series of shows will take place on the first Wednesday of
each month at the Junkyard Café; a stone's throw
from the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library. If you have
never been to the museum I highly recommend that too! The
magic evening kicks off with a no host bar at 6.30pm followed
by dinner at 7.00 and the show beginning at 8.00.
The
regular host for the 'Junkyard Magic' evenings is going
to be that 'man out of time Pop Haydn.' In spite of our
long friendship, it will be the first time I have worked
a gig with Pop and I am looking forward to it greatly. He
is a great magician and one of magic's true characters.
I can only imagine with the two of us sharing the stage,
the spirit of Billy McComb might be sitting in the back
of the room sipping a Captain Morgan and coke!
A
six-time winner of the 'Magician of the Year' award from
the Magic Castle, Pop combines superb magic with a great
deal of charm and humor to bedazzle his audience. I will
have to be careful not to get so caught up in watching his
show that I forget to set my props. I am sure a great deal
of the audience appeal of this new monthly gig for the regular
audiences will be watching what new tricks he pulls out
his bag each month.
I
will be performing basically my award winning Las Vegas
'Comedy Magic' show, which kicked off the trend for one-man
magic shows in Sin City back in the early '90s. If you have
never seen my show but are just familiar with my writing,
I invite you to come along and see what I actually do! To
all my old Castle friends I warmly invite you to catch up
with where I am at nowadays. Incredible as it seems it has
been 28 years since I worked a full week at the Magic Castle-and
it could be another 28 'till I do so again!
Full
details about the show are available on the website at www.junkyardmagic.weebly.com
or to make a reservation call 805.520.5865. The cost of
the evening including meal and show is a very modest $30
and I am confidently expecting it to be a splendid evening.
I think it is very exciting prospect to be a part of opening
up a new venue for magic and getting to perform a full-length
show in such an intimate setting.
As
an added bonus you do NOT have to wear a tie for the evening!
In fact Pop even encourages his audience to text during
his show, he is a big believer in the power of social networking
and encourages this scandalous behavior. Personally I think
something is wrong if the audience has enough time on their
hands to be texting or Facebooking mode during my show.
However, feel free if it makes you happy!

As magicians many fear or argue that technology is not magic
or that it in some way it is "cheating" our audiences.
They feel that we must be pure and stick to the classics
and use the classic tools of our trade to make magic happen.
I
can understand this concept and I can understand where this
line of thinking comes from. It is logical in nature and
does carry some weight to it.
However,
technology is magic if you look at it in the right way.
When a child flips a switch and a light comes on, is that
not magic to that child? When we have an MRI done and it
captures images the dr needs, is that also not magical in
nature?
Science
and technology in general has always been magical. I am
sure the electric light was seen as impossible to many.
This impossibility became reality. Something Impossible
made possible through science and technology. When seen
by folks for the first time, I am sure in invoked a sense
of awe and astonishment.
Now
go back and read the last paragraph. Read it over to yourself.
Isn't this exactly what happens when we create magic for
the audiences we perform for?
Think
about it. We find something impossible and make it possible.
Impossibility becomes reality and creates a sense of awe
and wonder. Sound familiar? It should cause science and
technology has done this over and over throughout the years.
So
as magicians we should remember we are entertainers first.
We use magic to create entertainment. If this is true, then
why not embrace technology to create the magic that we entertain
with?
I
am sure the very first sound system ever used in magic was
probably seen as pretty magical even if not used as a magical
effect. It still may have invoked a sense of awe. Yet now
it is common place.
Many
magicians these days are embracing science and technology
to create wonderful moments for their audiences and to create
magic that is vastly different and fresh.
Magician
Marco Tempest is a perfect example. Instead of fearing technology,
he has embraced it to a point where the technology becomes
the magic. Technology and magic collide to create things
never seen before. It becomes fascinating for people.
I
think he and others understand that science and technology
can and should become tools for us to use. We learn and
acquire these tools and use them in such ways in which to
create magical moments. The more tools we know, the more
we can pull from to create.
I
think the important thing to remember is that technology
can open up our mind to fresh ideas. However, we also must
be careful in its usage. As I stated before it is my belief
that presenting technology alone, without the inclusion
of magic, can become dangerous.
In
other words, if I rolled out an HD TV on to the stage and
went "tada", chance are your audience is going
to say, "ok, so what." It's not magical as it
is just technology being shown.
However,
if that TV is mixed with magical concepts it can become
magical in nature. If the magician apparently reached into
the TV and interacted with the image on screen, then technology
combines with magic in a way in which the audience is baffled
by. It becomes magic.
If
we want magic to grow, then we can't fear technology or
science. We need to learn from it and embrace it and find
ways in which to use it to grow ourselves and the art that
we love so much.
As
always I would love to hear from you. Please feel free to
contact me at magic4u02@aol.com. I look forward to it.

14. Showbiz Nostalgia Of A Few Of The Greats In Our Recent
Past
--------------------------------------------
Message by Walter Blaney
For
a bit of magic nostalgia, go to the Hocus Pocus Magic shop
website. http://hocuspoc.wordpress.com/2014/01/ You will
see a "Note from Paul Gross, longtime owner and entrepreneur
and magic historian. Then go to "Archives" and
you will see his "notes" which start in 2014 and
go back to 2004.
To
see what I'm talking about, start with the first page of
the archives, in 2014. Simply go to http://hocuspoc.wordpress.com/2014/01/
Then
start scrolling down. First you will see Mark and Nani Wilson
in their Magic Land of Allakazam. Keep scrolling down. Stop
again when you see a photo of Edgar Bergen and his "old
maid Effie Klinker". This video is priceless. Steve
Allen introduces Bergen, and you will see Edgar with Charlie
McCarthy, then Effie Klinker and finally Mortimer Snerd.
These
are wonderful clips of probably the all-time best ventriloquist
entertainer ever.... long time radio, TV and movie star.
I grew up watching him week after week, year after year.
Later on I got to work on a show with him, and spent a day
with Bergen when he was working at Knotts Berry Farm. I
finer gentleman you will never meet.
Scroll
down to see Blackstone Jr. vanish his birdcage with a dozen
kids holding on to it. Keep scrolling to see early clips
of Siegfried and Roy, The Amazing Ballantine, Jay Marshall
and Lefty, Senor Wences and Milo and Roger. All are great
names from our past.
I
hope you enjoy these videos.
