2. Paul Daniels' And Debbie McGee's Multi-Million Pound Home Flooded
--------------------------------------------
Vagner Vidal/INSNews

Paul Daniels' and Debbie McGee's home was dramatically flooded yesterday when the River Thames burst its banks and gallons of water poured into their home in Wargrave, Berkshire.

Fortunately, the couple were well prepared for the flood. Earlier this week Paul had earlier sent a tweet advising neighbours to place their belongings in inflatable paddling pools to minimise damage. He wrote: "Are you in danger of flooding. Get inflatable paddling pools downstairs and dump everything you can into them. You will save SO much stuff."

He later added: "Thank you to all those who asked about our flooding but don't worry. We prepared for it."

Although pictures of their riverside home indicate that they couple have been badly affected, Paul sounded positive. Yesterday he tweeted: "Nice to see a bight sunny day. The water is still about 15" below 1983 around here. Fingers crossed."

He added: "We are nowhere near as bad as some we are seeing on the news."

And in a final show of optimism he signed off with the words: "Right... I am off shopping now the Lovely Debbie McGee. Enjoy the sunshine folks. This is going to be great year."

Announcing The Auction Of The Le Grand David Spectacular Magic Show
Kaminski Auctions is pleased to announce the auction of magic illusions and props, memorabilia, original artwork and several significant bronzes from the Le Grand David Spectacular Magic Show of Cabot Street Cinema Theatre fame. The auction will take place at the Cabot Street Cinema Theatre, 286 Cabot Street, Beverly, Massachusetts, on Sunday, February 23rd, starting at 10:00 am.
For over 35 years (February 1977 - May 2012), Marco the Magi's production of Le Grand David and his own Spectacular Magic Company delighted audiences of all ages in downtown Beverly, becoming a New England institution. In 1999, the Guinness Book Of World Records established that Beverly's wonder-working troupe held the world record for the longest running stage magic production.

Le Grand David and his own Spectacular Magic Company has been called "the Greatest Magic Show of the last hundred years." Featuring Marco the Magi, Le Grand David and a large performing ensemble, the production premiered on February 20, 1977. Three years later they were featured in a two-page spread in Time magazine (5/12/80), which garnered them national and international recognition.

Bob Lund, founder of the American Museum of Magic in Marshall, Michigan visited the performance numerous times over the years and described the performance as "one of the great adventures of my life," and wrote to Marco, "I tell everyone who takes the tour of the museum that if they want to see the finest magic show in the world today, they must travel to Beverly, to see Le Grand David."

Over the years the awards and accolades were numerous, Marco was inducted by unanimous vote into the Society of American Magicians' Magic Hall of Fame in Hollywood, California. The Le Grand David Spectacular Magic Company was also featured in National Geographic, The Christian Science Monitor and declared the "The Best Magic Show in the World" by Yankee Magazine.

Marco, David and Company performed six times at the White House Annual Easter Egg Roll for over 30,000 guests and were invited as special guests to entertain the families of the Washington D.C. diplomatic corps by First Lady Nancy Reagan at the White House Christmas party.

Fans, historians and collectors of magic history alike will want to bid on the exquisite original artwork, superbly decorated stage magic illusions and props, hand painted backdrops, and the many fantastic posters created for the production over the years. Featured in the sale are several bronzes created by David F. Bull (father of Le Grand David). The largest weighs over 500 pounds and depicts Marco the Magi suspending Le Grand David on the bristles of a broom while members of the cast look on in wonder.

Preview hours for this exciting sale will be held at the Cabot Street Theater on Wednesday, February 19th through Saturday, February 22nd from 10:00am -5:00pm and from 8:00 am on Sunday, February 23rd day of sale. Bidding is offered in person, online, by absentee or phone bid starting at 10:00am EST. 4. Dr. Scott Lewis: Tragedy In Sydney

Article forwarded on by Mel Kientz

The Telegraph News - Jim Orourke

Hypnotist Scott Lewis, part of the Illusionists 2.0 magic troupe, dies in Sydney balcony fall

An American stage hypnotist in Sydney for a series of shows at the Opera House has fallen to his death at an inner-city apartment block.

The body of Scott Lewis, part of the Illusionists 2.0 magic troupe, from the United States, was found on a fourth floor balcony at Pyrmont about 9.40am.
Witnesses have told police they saw an object fall as many as six storeys at the Goldsborough Mort apartments in Pyrmont Street.

Police say there are no suspicious circumstances, but it is understood that inquiries will be made to determine if Dr Lewis was climbing from one balcony to another when he fell.

He was dead when ambulance crews and police arrived.

Tourist Rachael Waack (Waack), who is staying at the apartment block, said she was woken by the sound of a "whoomp" noise near her unit soon after 9am.
Ms Waack, from Yallourn North in Victoria, said she then heard a woman screaming hysterically.

"I went out to the walkway outside our apartment and saw a woman walking along with her head in her hands, screaming.

"She was saying 'do they know?, do they know?'," Ms Waack said.
"Then we saw the police arrive soon after that."

Dr Lewis, 50, was reported missing by fellow members of Illusionists 2.0 when he failed to get on the bus at the apartment block for an 11am matinee performance at the Opera House.

5. An Open Letter To Magic "Copy Acts" Worldwide
--------------------------------------------
Message by Jeff McBride (US)

Dear Copy Cat Acts,
As a magic teacher, I wish to educate artists on how to protect their original material. I also want other performers to know that it is not ethical to copy other artists' work without permission or agreements.

Young artists can prevent these situations from happening if they are well educated in the history of magic and well connected to the magic community. Here are three nuggets of wisdom for our students of the magical arts:

"Trust yourself. Think for yourself. Act for yourself. Speak for yourself. Be yourself. Imitation is suicide."
- Marva Collins

"No man was ever great by imitation."
-Samuel Johnson

"It is better to fail in originality than to succeed in imitation."
- Herman Melville

Please look deep within yourself. Good things take time, energy and patience to grow. If you nurture your creativity, you will develop your own style and original work. If you cannot create your own original work, you can ask for permission before you decide to take other people's material, art, or ideas and put them in your show. Often, other artists will help you with your projects.

Personally, I really enjoy helping young magicians make good choices when it comes to performing on TV. A few simple emails or a phone call to the originators would have prevented a situation like this from happening. Let us all learn from this, and grow in our understanding of each other and our magical art.

Yours in magical community,
Jeff McBride, founder of The McBride Magic & Mystery School

Magic Tube: A 'DIY' primer.

YouTube is such a pervasive and omnipresent element in this digital age that it seems almost ridiculous to write a column about its role and place in the magic world. However, I do think I have a couple of thoughts on the subject that warrant a few words in this e-zine about this delightful resource but potentially double edged resource.

Firstly let me be as positive as I can on the use of YouTube as a digital window into our wonderful world of magic with its rich and varied past. What a magnificent opportunity it gives contemporary magicians to understand the skills of performers who have paved the way for magic, as we now know it. Here are three tips for our younger readers to do a little YouTube research. Search the following headings on the YouTube homepage.

'Fred Kaps Magic.' A glorious storehouse of video material is available online featuring this brilliant and sophisticated performer. I am constantly shocked when I find younger magicians who are unaware of the stupendous talents that Fred brought to both his performance and routining skills. If you have never seen Kaps in action then you have a true joy awaiting you! Magic really doesn't get any better and there is a particularly rich archive here awaiting your search.

'Roy Benson Magic' Benson was a comedy magician who was way ahead of his time. His routines and comedy are timeless and play as funny today as they were on the day they were recorded. If Roy Benson is just a vague name from the past then do yourself a favor and bring him to life with the (sadly, way too few) black and white clips that YouTube supplies.

'Paul Daniels Magic' Paul, of course, is a very much present and powerful force in magic. He is a living legend in England who launched many magical careers with his various TV series. I would venture to state that no performer has performed as much (and varied) magic over the traditional tube. I left England before the Daniels tidal wave hit the air waves and have also never had the opportunity to see him perform live-thank heavens for YouTube! There are many younger performers in the United States, and around the world, who fail to recognize the enormous influence and talent, which made Paul a household name. Check him out on YouTube and you have a joyous experience ahead of you!

I make these three particular suggestions to our younger readers with absolutely no apologies to older readers who have already discovered these magnificent performers. The presence of YouTube's video gems may be unfamiliar to them and the hours of entertainment, education and laughter that lay ahead will make all that spam on your computer melt away into a minor inconvenience.

On a very different note, not everything about YouTube makes me as happy as the ability to watch the kind of performers I listed above. There is a disquieting amount of younger performers who make 'show and tell' videos, which are a disgraceful breach of magic's time honored code of non-exposure. YouTube is public-GOT IT! Explaining how moves, and worse still other performers routines are accomplished in order to 'get your name out there' is unacceptable to me.

Here is my addendum to the, admittedly brash, home truth; "Those who can't do, teach!" I would add; "Those who can't do OR teach shouldn't be encouraged to shoot crappy video on their iPhone and then post the results on YouTube!" You could argue with me till you are blue in the face and I will never agree that this 'advances' magic in any way.

I'm just going to touch on one other topic that relates to magic on the Internet. I recently re-posted a video that someone had created showing a 'side by side' comparison of two young Turkish magicians cruising to a big win on 'Turkey's Got Talent,' by copying verbatim routines by Jeff McBride, Mac King and Penn & Teller. In this case they could have renamed the show, 'Turkey has access to YouTube!'

I posted it hoping to spark a little lively debate about the way TV talent contest influence, and sometimes coerce their contestants into doing highly questionable things in order to come up with their 60-90 second bites. To me this particular video showed the very ugliest side of the situation.

Twenty minutes later I had to remove the post from Facebook! Within that space of time I received comments that ranged from racist to left field idiocy. Just for the record, "NO!" Because a performer has material on video it does NOT mean it is OK to steal it and present it as original material. Do I really need to say that? I guess so…………

The Weekend Of Wonder Offers Prize Package For Young Magician

Maxwell Blade and Jay Scott Berry are very happy to announce a Special Prize Package for the Youth Contest Winner at the upcoming "Magic at the Beach" convention. The package includes tickets, hotel and an exclusive guest spot on the "Stars of Tomorrow" Gala at the Weekend of Wonder in Asheville on May 2, 3 & 4.
The Weekend of Wonder is an International Festival of Magic, produced by Berry and Blade, showcasing a full spectrum of the Art from Close-up, Stage and Street Magic to One-Man Shows, Lectures, Workshops and All-Star Galas. A stellar cast of some of the world's greatest magicians will take part in this Celebration of Pure Wonder in beautiful Asheville, NC. Artists joining Max and Jay include, direct from Las Vegas, Jeff McBride, World Champion, Michael Ammar and from Hollywood, Magic Castle Award Winner, Andrew Goldenhersh. Local Celebrity Magician, Ricky Boone will be the Guest of Honor for what will be an annual event.

The lucky winner will take the stage on Sunday, May 4th, at The Asheville Community Theatre, joining John Venus, Eric Stevens and other rising young stars. He or she will also receive personal coaching and encouragement from Max, Jay and the other Master Magicians at the Festival.

"Jay and I started in magic at a young age", says Max. "We both feel very blessed at the success we've had and this is a perfect chance to help up-and-coming young artists". Jay heartily agrees, adding, "The whole idea of the Festival is to Amaze, Amuse and Inspire. The "Stars of Tomorrow" show is a professional showcase for promising young magicians. This is both an incentive as well as a reward for their dedication and commitment to the Art of Magic."
The first Weekend of Wonder was held in Hot Springs, AR, this past September. This ground-breaking event is the brainchild of Berry and Blade. "It was", Max admits, "A leap of Faith. We both shared this dream of bringing inspirational magic to the general public, making it accessible for all and a true family event. We agreed to keep ticket prices as low as possible and even offer many shows absolutely free. Our plan is to hold it annually in Hot Springs and now Asheville, with more cities soon to be added across the US and around the world."

The response to this first Festival was tremendous with sold-out shows and standing ovations. Local television, magazines and newspapers covered it extensively. The world's largest magic publication, "The Linking Ring" grabbed the scoop, printing two full articles on what it called, "A whole new concept in Magic Gatherings." Reporter Dennis Schick, raved, "It lived up to its name - WOW! From all aspects, it was wildly successful!"

"The Weekend of Wonder is a golden ticket into the world of pure imagination, perfect for children, families and everyone who loves magic", Blade explains. "Your journey begins at the Asheville Community Theatre. This state-of-the-Art venue will host all of the Main Events. These include The All Star Gala on Friday night, The Masters of Magic Gala on Saturday night, the One-Man Shows and Magic Lectures. The on-site Black Box Theatre, known as "35 Below" will host the Workshops.
From there you can venture in all directions to be amazed, amused and inspired. Tickets start at only $10 each and many of the shows throughout the Festival are free! Ticket Packages are very reasonably priced at only $150 adults and $100 for Children under 17. These are specially designed for Magicians or the general public and include Reserved VIP Seating to 10 of the Major Shows and Events."
With characteristic enthusiasm, Jay concludes, "Let's be honest, everyone has seen magic on TV. But that's not how magic was meant to be seen. The Art of Magic hasn't survived since the dawn of time because of television. It has survived because it is meant to be seen and fully experienced live, up-close, with no camera tricks and no second chances!"

Magic Creator and S.A.M. Member Uses His Latest Magic Project To Promote The Society of American Magicians

Brian Daniel South formerly of Creative Magic and now of Teach By Magic has launched a project for a new deck of cards on Kickstarter. It is called the Different Deck and it lives up to its name not only in card design but in the project as well. Here is the link to this project. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/872009742/different-deck-playing-cards-reinvented

As a proud member of The Society of American Magicians, Brian has included two elements to help support the organization.

1) He has set a goal that if met he will create a special promo card that will go in every single Different Deck EVER printed. That means that The Society of American Magicians will be promoted in Different Decks sold everywhere (and one of Brian's goals is the mass distribution of this product…not just online sales).

2) If you are a member of the S.A.M. (or are thinking about becoming a member) you can add $1.35 (get it 1 - 3 - 5) to any reward level that's $24 and up and Brian will add one more different deck to you reward.

17. Mind Summit Announced For Europe
--------------------------------------------
Message by Danny Archer (US)

Mind Summit, a new mentalism convention announced for Europe.

http:\\www.mind-summit.net

The first Mind Summit mentalism convention, will take place from June 8-10th, 2014 in Cologne, Germany.

The global boom in mentalism has been taking place for a number of years. Many magicians are now using and incorporating mentalism effects into their performances. Many others are seeking the right information on how they can add mentalism effects to their own shows. The Mind Summit will cater to anyone from novice to expert who has an interest in the field of mentalism.

The convention organizers are; Danny Archer from the US, who was the founder and one of the producers of MINDvention, the longest running public mentalism convention in the world, and Thomas Heine and Rainer Mees, from Germany who have extensive credentials in the world of mentalism as both creators, manufacturers and performers and they are the founders of Paralabs. These three bring years and years of mentalism and convention experience to the table.

The convention will take place at the beautiful Hotel Dorint (An der Messe Köln), Deutz-Mülheimer Str. 22-24, in Cologne (Köln), Germany.

Cologne is Germany's fourth largest city and the river Rhine runs right through the city. The venue is less than a ten minute ride from the Cologne/Bonn International Airport and there is a train station meters from the hotel's front door. The hotel has all the modern features and amenities that will make it a most enjoyable convention for the attendees. The hotel rooms are spacious and modern and the venue has all the ambience and technical requirements needed to host a first rate convention. Surrounding the hotel are a number of other hotels as well as many cafes and restaurants.

We are very pleased to announce three of our headliners. From American, a seasoned performer and a revered teacher that anyone interested in mentalism will know, Richard Osterlind. Richard has been a top corporate performer for over 40 years. He has traveled around the world entertaining presidents, heads of state, foreign dignitaries, CEO executives, sports figures, newscasters and audiences from every walk of life. In addition to performing and lecturing at the Summit, Richard will also be offering a full day Masterclass.

Our second headliner is Peter Turner from the UK. When trying to describe the impact that Peter Turner is making on modern mentalism, Bob Cassidy said it best.

"Peter is at the forefront of a new generation of mentalists to whom, in a very real sense, the torch has been passed. When you've tried Peter's material, I'm sure you'll agree that the torch is in the right hands" - Bob Cassidy

Also from the UK is Colin McLeod. He's not only considered by his peers to be one of the most creative minds in mentalism, he's also considered, by paying audiences, to be one of the most entertaining live performers they've seen. Colin has been writing and creating groundbreaking material for the last fifteen years. Some of which is used by performers all around the world, most of which he's kept to himself to stand out.

In addition to the convention, the producers will also be organizing Master Classes with some of the featured presenters (Osterlind and Turner will both be offering additional classes and instruction). These Master Classes will be limited in size and will take place either before or after the Summit. Details to be announced.

Registration for the convention will be 385 euros and there will be an early sign-up until March 8th for only 350 euros. The price includes convention registration as well as lunch for two days as well as coffee, cakes and drinks.

The producers are excited to be able to introduce and present such an event in Europe, and we are looking forward to an informative and entertaining convention and we hope that you will be able to join us.
