Still "Zaney" After All These Years
A Chat With Walter "Zaney" Blaney
A Podcast by Scott Wells - The Magic Word

It was unusually warm and sunny in Houston on that Wednesday afternoon in
January three years ago. Houston's temperatures are often mild compared with the rest of the country's winter weather. Geoff Williams had just lectured for our magic club the night before and several of us were enjoying a nice lunch and social time together filled with camaraderie where we discussed all things magic. One topic led to another which eventually inspired me to turn on my audio recorder to capture a particularly interesting conversation.

After lunch, Walter "Zaney" Blaney and I went outside to sit on the patio to chat about Walter's passion to combat magic exposure. It led to the birth of the World Alliance of Magicians (W.A.M.) but due to some thorny issues, it was ill-fated. Walter also told me some funny stories about his performance of his famous "Ladder Suspension" as well as his association with NASA Astronauts.

This episode was originally slated to be aired for someone else's podcast, but has never aired until now. So here is a "lost episode" that definitely needs to be "found" and brought to light. It is only about a half hour long and is a fun romp.

You can listen online and/or download it from the website at

6. Remarkable Magic #287 - Nick Lewin
--------------------------------------------
Message by Nick Lewin (US)

McComb and the Note in Lemon.

Last week I had the great pleasure of spending some time in Mark Wilson's offices/warehouse in Valencia. I recorded the first half of an interview that will eventually appear as a two-part feature article in Vanish magazine. I had a great time peeping at the historic items that the 5000 square foot facility houses and I heard some great stories from Mark and Nani about their magical life together.

I got to share a story with Mark that he wasn't familiar with, and I want to use it as part of this week's column. I was reminded of the events that inspired the story when I saw framed artwork from the first edition of 'Mark Wilson's Course in Magic' on the wall. The other element in the story is my dear friend, hero and mentor Billy McComb.

McComb was our houseguest in Los Angeles and much midnight oil was burned, on a nightly basis, while Billy and I discussed magic and magicians. In late night conversations Billy and I had often discussed the 'Note in Lemon,' an effect that I loved and he felt was corny and not quite strong enough. I stuck to my guns and told Billy that before he totally disregarded the effect, he should at least perform it a few times. It was a very integral element in my show, and still is, and I felt strongly about it.

Billy returned from the Magic Castle one night with an early copy of 'The Mark Wilson Course in Magic,' He brewed a big pot of coffee, filled his pipe with Old Bruno Ready Rubbed Shag Tobacco, and settled down to read the book in an all night session. I took the opportunity to get an early night, not a usual occurrence when McComb was staying in your spare room!

The next morning (by which I mean early afternoon) when Billy emerged from his room, pipe already lit, he made a stately proclamation, "I'm going to give it a shot". By the time we had finished our first cup of coffee I got the details behind his dramatic statement. Billy was going to add the Note in Lemon to his show during his next cruise engagement. He was going to perform the routine exactly as Mark detailed it in his book. I was quietly elated, as it wasn't very often that I was in the position of directing Blilly's magical path.

I looked on this as something of a victory and I was waiting very excitedly to get his reaction, when he returned from his Sitmar Cruise gig ten days later. However when he returned he steadfastly refused to mention anything about the trick. I rather assumed that it had been a bit of a disaster, but waited for him to bring up the topic. No immediate response was forthcoming though.

Eventually I asked Billy how Mark's routine had worked out for him and if it had been a success. In a slightly aggrieved manner he responded that it had gone very well. In fact as the full story emerged it appeared that it had gone very well and instantly become a major addition to his act. Billy had in fact been far from pleased to find that it elicited more reaction and comments from passengers than some of the most highly prized original tricks in his repertoire.

It is very easy to overlook the impact of some of the classic effects in magic. There is something emotionally satisfactory about borrowing money from someone, destroying it and then restoring it. This is a simple three-act play in miniature, with a very satisfactory theatrical arc. While over the years I added many surprises and twists to the basic effect, I have never wavered in my belief that this is great piece of magic. Learning to perform it successfully is a lesson in theatre that will add greatly to your skills as a magical entertainer.

I've been getting some great reactions since the release of my 'Ultimate Linking Finger Ring Routine' and would love you to read about them. Check out my blog and web sites.

A good friend of mine posted an interesting question the other day. It sparked much debate and discussion and worthy of talking about it here so that we may all learn or gain something from it.

The question went like this: "So why is it that people hire someone to perform magic who is a magician, balloon artist, face painter, clown, fire eater, and DJ (AKA average at best jack or all trades and expert at none)?"

In the eyes of the consumer, they want a low price. I do not personally feel the consumer is always looking for a jack of all trades. In most cases they are looking for a particular need and a low price for that need. It just so happens that they sometimes they find this low price "need" with a person who claims to do everything.

Now why is the low price an issue these days? Well that is simple. It is this perception of lay people that all magicians are the same. They are not educated enough (most any ways) to understand that magicians are different and you can get what you pay for. They do not realize that (like consumer brands) each of us are different and provide a different level of experience and solutions.

This perception exists a lot because of 1) a lot of bad magicians out there and 2) the simple fact that folks have never hired a magician before and have no experience doing it. As wrong as this perception is, it exists and it is up to us as performers to change that perception.

Now in the consumer world, folks realize there is a difference in what we call "brands". They understand that a certain make and model of car may be better "in their mind" then another. This is based on perception built up by effective brand identity and brand marketing. In magic, this does not happen much unless someone understands there is a reason why we call it "Show Business".

It is up to us to see a need or a problem that the consumer has and to solve that problem with a solution. The more solutions we can answer that directly fixes a need for the client, the more our value increases. The perception of you starts to change and they see that you are vastly different than anyone else.

Any consumer will be willing to pay top dollar if they feel they are getting a solution that is by far better than anything else. They will pay top dollar for value. They will also pay top dollar if they know that the entertainer is meeting and solving more direct needs that they have. Why does anyone buy anything? In most cases it is because you have a problem you are trying to find a solution for.

It also goes beyond producing a good show. Any good magician will realize that part of solutions providing is the ability to give the client more then what they expect by solving needs they may not even be aware of in the first place.

The more problems you can solve for any client, the more value you have to them. It is once again about YOU making sure your prospects know you are different then magician A, B and C. If the consumer thinks we are all the same, it is up to YOU to change that perception through effective marketing and branding of yourself.

As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you.

8. Broken Wand - Imam Hossain
--------------------------------------------
Message by George Schindler (US)

The New York Post described Imam this way "His mobile face lures you with smiles, and then entraps you with a conniving leer." Best known for his unique style and as the proprietor of "Mostly Magic", the Greenwich Village nightclub in New York , Imam died in December 2012 at age 71 while visiting his family in Bangladesh .

Imam was born in 1941 the 3rd of 10 children. During his childhood his father invited a traveling street magician to perform for the family. This magician taught Imam a coin trick - his first and only formal magic lesson. Imam developed his sleights and routines, performed in his inimitable style. From age twelve he toured India as a dancer while co- producing and performing in plays, musicals and variety shows in a theatrical club. He graduated from Dhakar University, then went to Canada to receive his M. A. and Ph.D degrees in Engineering at the University of Ontario.

In 1970 he came to New York and became a regular performer at Dick Brooks' Magic Townhouse. While working as an engineer designing bridges during the day his evenings were spent from 1979 to 1993 at his famous "Mostly Magic" restaurant and club. He and his wife Evelyn Simon rarely took a night off from their club which previewed magical entertainers, singers and comedians. Imam was always the "star" performer.

His "Balls from the Mouth" "Money Money" (Miser's Dream) and "Climbing Rope Knot" effects were legendary and took him to England and to FISM. In 1989 he was named "Magician of the Year" by the Parent Assembly the Society of American Magicians. Imam loved performers and many now well known magicians, honed their talents at his club. He loved to showcase young performers. Imam is survived by his wife Evelyn and daughter Dena. When asked about philosophy of magic he always replied "show business is for evenings and weekends; daytime is for 'jobs'.

12. February Issue Of Genii
--------------------------------------------
Message by Richard Kaufman (US)

The digital version of the largest independent magazine for magicians, the February issue of Genii, is now online for computer viewing.

We have lots of audio and video this month:

Audio columns from Max Maven and Jon Racherbaumer;

Video from me, a great Coin Assembly by Yuji Wada, Dani DaOrtiz supplements
his column with video, and there are a lot of video clips of performance and magic in our cover story on MagoMigue (Miguel Puga).

MagoMigue is a twice FISM-winning Spanish magician whose work is about to
become much more widely known in the United States with the appearance of a
four-DVD set from Luis de Matos's Essential Magic Collection. Titled Allegro, the set covers a good deal of his repertoire, including several full acts-among them those he performed at FISM-with explanations. It's not all close-up, either-there's quite a bit of stand-up magic included. He's phenomenally good and the tricks are mind-blowing.

You'll find a free DVD in this issue courtesy of Essential Magic and Luis, which contains the following items by MagoMigue: "Card And Glass" performed and explained. The effect and method are great. One card is inside a glass that's isolated on stage. A spectator calls out a card. No sleights, total freedom. The card happens to be the one freely named by the spectator. A classic plot with a guaranteed method that you can use minutes later in front of an audience; "Cards Across"; and a performance only of MagoMigue's incredible "Bill in Lemon." All for you, for free! (For those reading the digital edition, the videos will be embedded in the article.)

Some months after FISM in July 2012, I sat down with ex-FISM president Eric Eswin for a look back at the 12 years of his term as President, the many changes he implemented, and his feelings about what happened in Blackpool last July. Eric brought FISM forward into the 21st century in vital ways and, despite the farrago in Blackpool, FISM's next outing in Italy in 2015 looks to be a winner in the capable hands of convention producer Walter Rolfo.

Adelaide Herrmann's fame has receded over the years into the shadow of her husband. Alexander Herrmann was the first great stage magician/theater celebrity in the United States, and while Adelaide performed as well as assisted him, that's been forgotten by many. Also forgotten was her autobiography, which remained unpublished until recently when Margret Steele brought it out through bramblebooks.com (where it is available for sale in both a hardcover, color limited edition and a black and white paperback). This month we excerpt several anecdotes from one of history's simultaneously most famous and forgotten female magicians.

We welcome a new columnist this issue, attorney Sara Crasson, who will be presenting a four-part series on magic, intellectual property, and the law. I've known Sara for many years through magic and she is able to bring a bracing clarity to the current state of affairs about how the law does and does not protect magic in various forms. 1,000 words on the topic tells you next to nothing: that's why we're bringing you a full legal paper on the subject. You'll find it interesting if you're contemplating whether to make a dub of that new instant download for a friend.

The "other month" returning columnists debut their new contributions for 2013 . Dani DaOrtiz ("ala Carte!") explains a really good version of a Hofzinser effect, "A Suit Freely Though Of"; Roberto Giobbi continues his long-running and popular "Genii Session" with a provocative essay on what he feels are "The Ten Best Card Tricks Ever"; David Kaye delivers "The Expert at the Kids' Table," wherein an alien presence visits our planet and discovers he doesn't know squat about performing for humans; David Britland teaches a completely self-working miracle inspired by Bob Ostin that's "Straight to the Point" in "Cardopolis"; John Gaughan meets Winged Victory and catches a card in "Chamber of Secrets"; Jon Racherbaumer will no doubt write something interesting in "On the Slant" (I haven't seen it yet); and trundling in at the tail end is "Light from the Lamp" with books reviewed by Eric Mead, tricks by David Oliver, and videos by Joe M. Turner.

* Every month Genii gives you more pages than any other independent magazine: a 104 to 112 page paper magazine mailed directly to you.

* Every month Genii gives you a FREE digital issue with supplementary video and audio columns that can be viewed on ANY computer, desktop or laptop, as well as on any tablet or smartphone, and we have special apps for both the iPad and iPhone (with apps coming soon for Android tablets and the Kindle Fire).
