2. Magician's Society Condemns Bullying
--------------------------------------------
Message by George Schindler (US)
In a strong resolution the National Council of the Society
of American Magicians Condemns "Cyber Bullying"
The National Council of the Society of American Magicians
has determined that various chat rooms and social media
have been improperly utilized as outlets for cyber bullying
which targets magic, magicians and youngsters who are interested
in magic.
Various magic forums serve a good purpose in sharing ideas
and thoughts which help to improve the skills of the performer,
some web sites either allow, tolerate or permit performers
to be the victims of absurd, hateful and hurtful attacks
against a fellow performer
The National Council of the Society of American Magicians
hereby adopted the following resolution condemning Cyber
Bullying:
The Society of American magicians opposes and condemns Cyber
Bullying in any and all forms including but not limited
to all forms of hate speech, the use of words which attack
physical appearance, gender, religious belief, sexual orientation
or nationality and opposes all kinds of needless and hateful
cyber bullying resulting from the publishing of private
information on magic related web sites.

This
week's podcast is in three parts with daily updates from
the tenth annual MINDvention. Lots of activities at this
little event that has ripples throughout the world of mentalism.
Nearly a dozen countries were represented and over 100 total
attendees enjoyed feting Bob Cassidy as this year's Guest
of Honor. His new book, "The Artful Mentalism of Bob
Cassidy Volume 2: Fundamentals" was introduced at this
convention. Lots of other top mentalists were in attendance
who performed and lectured like Docc Hilford, Jon Stetson,
Ross Johnson, John Riggs and many more.
I
had a chance to chat with a couple dozen of these guys during
the convention and posted daily updates as well as photos
on http://themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/

6. Remarkable Magic #327 - Nick Lewin
--------------------------------------------
Message by Nick Lewin (US)
Chan
Canasta. A Remarkable Men.
I
have recently taken to joking with agents, bookers and producers
that I am rather unique as magicians go because I don't
read minds! The field of corporate entertainment has become
so filled with mentalists that it usually gets a good laugh
from them.
Actually
it isn't quite true because I have been fascinated with
the field of mental magic for about 50 years, because of
three remarkable men who influenced me greatly before I
left my homeland of England. They all grasped something
that contemporary magicians are now rediscovering and sharing
with their audiences. Mentalism contains some of the strongest
effects in the entire lexicon of magic.
One
of my earliest memories of watching magic was sitting in
front of our black and white Decca television set and watching
Chan Canasta perform on one of his wonderful BBC television
series. It must have been the very early '60s and I really
can't remember if this was before or after my first interest
in magic. If it was before then it must have been a major
factor in my interest blossoming, if it was after then it
sealed the deal. I really had no idea of what he was doing;
let alone how he did it.
I
was recently gifted a copy of one of those pioneering TV
shows and was shocked to discover that I still had no idea
how many of his effects were accomplished. The man was amazing,
or as the TV credits informed us-'A Remarkable Man.' Not
only was his magic incredible but his presentation was so
superb that it stands up today as strongly as I remember
it from my childhood, and how often is that the case.
Born
in 1920 as Chananel Mifelew in Krakow, Poland he moved to
Great Britain in 1947 where he soon became a hugely influential
instigator in the birth of mentalism in the United Kingdom.
In 1951 he was featured in the first of his 350 performances
on BBC TV. Yes, 350 shows-that is a whole lot of magic!
He had a rather simple and yet totally overwhelming gimmick
when he performed, he didn't always succeed in his psychological
experiments.
This
simple factor did something very powerful, it made him appear
incredibly authentic. I don't remember my two other mentalist
heroes, Al Koran and Maurice Fogel, ever taking the chance
of being flat out wrong. It was sheer brilliance to take
chances the way Canasta did. By taking this approach he
succeeded even when he apparently failed.
While
never, ever claiming to be more than 'A Remarkable Man'
I really don't think there were many viewers who didn't
secretly believe that his abilities crossed some special
line. Each week I would wait to see the book test that inevitably
closed his TV shows. A bookcase was part of the backdrop
on his set and I would wait breathlessly for the moment
when he performed this particular effect.
Let's
not gloss over that little bombshell that I dropped in the
last paragraph. The book that was used by Canasta for the
book test was removed by a spectator from a bookshelf. How
cool is that, it was in a bookshelf! How many mentalists
have you seen who added that psychologically powerhouse
touch to their presentation? The man was pure genius. He
left me with a lifelong fondness for this particular effect
that has cost me hundreds and hundreds of dollars!
At
the height of his fame Canasta left behind his wildly successful
career as a performer and followed his true dream as a painter.
With successful gallery shows on both side of the pond he
turned this dream into a reality. The man was a genius.
If
you want to know more about Chan Canasta I suggest you find
a copy of the excellent book that David Britland wrote and
my dear friend Martin Breese published. The book is called
'Chan Canasta-A remarkable Man' and belongs in the library
of any true mentalist who is worth his salt.
If
you really want a master class in Mentalism then find some
video of Mr. Canasta performing his world-class feats of
magic and mindreading. No matter how much effort it takes
you to find a copy of his work it will be worth it. I've
said it before and I'll say it again, the man was pure genius,
and a truly Remarkable Man.
Chan
Canasta may have preceded the current 'Mother Of All Book
tests' but he was very definitely the 'Mother Of All Book
testers.' Trust me on this one-- his work has haunted me
for nearly half a century!

7. Making a Difference - #319 - Kyle Peron
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kyle Peron (US)
magic4u02@aol.com
http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com
http://www.kpmagicproducts.com
Recently
my wife and I got a chance to perform for a fun raiser for
Autistic children. We had a great time and a wonderful response
from our show which we customized for the evening. At the
end of the show I share (through magic) my own personal
story as I am handicapped as well.
As most of you know, I am a deaf magician and I am proud
of that fact. I do not want folks feeling sorry for me because
I do not feel sorry for myself. I get the chance to make
a difference by sharing my love for magic with others. We
ALL have that chance and all have that power to give back.
The best thing about that night was not so much a great
and fun show we ended up having. The best part was sitting
and talking with 2 handicapped teens and just talking to
them as I would talk to anyone else. I could tell so easily
how much they appreciated it. Just to chat on equal terms.
They both said they loved my message I placed in my last
routine as it meant a lot to them. That was real magic that
night. That is what makes me feel real good being able to
possibly help someone else. I am very blessed.
I personally know what it is like for people to look at
you differently or to think of you as different or not as
"normal" as others. As a deaf person I often was
treated that way and as a younger person it hurt a lot of
times. However, you start to get used to it even though
it is never easy to handle. As a magician and an adult,
I have a deeper appreciation for treating people fairly.
For trying to outreach a bit more when I can.
Maybe I am a bit closer to it because of my own handicap.
I am not sure, but I just feel as I am talking to people,
I treat them as just that.... "People". It does
not matter if they are in a wheelchair or not or whatever
the issue may be. They are still people and should be treated
that way. Everyone wants respect and that is what I try
to show as much as I can. I am certainly not perfect and
no one is, but reaching out is something I certainly can
at least try and do.
It is a matter of learning to look at people as people.
It does not matter what they may be seated in, how they
walk, how they move or even how their brain functions. People
are people and we all want respect and to be treated just
like anyone else. I know it may not always be easy to be
in the right mind-set but we certainly can try more often.

15. The Passing Of An Old Friend
--------------------------------------------
Message by Paul Daniels (UK)
A
blast from my past came leaping out of my email today. The
nephew of a ventriloquist called Harry Bowes wrote to tell
me that he had died a week ago. Most people will never have
heard of him but he had so many different ideas in his act,
which was mostly performed with his little boy doll, Reggie
Buttons. The name Buttons and Bowes was a natural for the
act.
Harry
had all sorts of stuff that 'talked' in his act, including
shoes. One of the features, and so well done, was his use
of two members of the audience who appeared to talk but
in reality only opened their mouths when Harry squeezed
their arms. One seemed to have a very low voice, and one
very high.
With
Harry's generous permission, I worked in the clubs doing
the card in wallet putting the voices into the two men who
'volunteered' to take part in the trick. Later, again with
Harry's permission, I passed the technique onto the British
comedy comedian/singer/impressionist David Copperfield,
a very popular club and occasional TV performer.
Show
business... it goes round and round.
Goodbye
Harry.
