2. Tammy Calvert Needs Help
--------------------------------------------
Message by Susan Lewin (US)
Hello
Alan: Here is a notice from Jade regarding Tammy Calvert.
Tammy is totally without funds. About $600 has been raised
so far to offset court fees. Thank you for your consideration.
Best wishes, Susan
Jade
Tjin
Some months ago Tammy and John Calvert sued Ohio physician
Randy Wolf in California for $63,000 of his unpaid $100,000
purchase price for "Magicarama," the Calverts'
world famous magic show, which was delivered to Dr. Wolf
in 2008. Attorney Jack Browne, who has been handling the
case for no fee, has informed Tammy that due to an adverse
ruling which must be appealed concerning California jurisdiction
over Dr. Wolf, additional court costs of $2,000 are necessary
before any more progress can be made on the case, and that
Tammy needs to have this sum by November 12th. Tammy's funds
are completely tapped out.
I
am reaching out to the magical community to help out this
cause for John and Tammy. If 2,000 magicians gave $1 to
help, it could very well make the difference between what
is right and wrong. It's the extra four quarters sitting
on your desk that you've overlooked every morning as you
work on your computer. Contributions can be made on PayPal
to EpicProductions@Juno.com.
You
won't miss your four quarters, and your action may prove
heroic. Tammy and I send you our heartfelt thanks in advance.
Thank you!

Owner
of 'Houdini House' on W. 113th St. wishes fans of the magician
would stop coming in droves. Traffic picks up around Halloween,
the day of the conjurer's death.
There's
no ghost, just a frustrated old man.
Fred
Thomas, 71, lives in the famous "Houdini House"
on W. 113th St. in Harlem - which becomes one of the city's
premiere tourist attractions every Halloween, the anniversary
of the master magician's 1926 death.
And
Thomas has had enough.

5. Bill Rauscher Introduces John Calvert And His Full Evening
Magic
--------------------------------------------
Message by Bill Rauscher (US)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3rBM8A8aZKU
See
John Calvert in 1995, age 84 performing his full evening
stage show in Lawrenceburg, Indiana. See Calvert at his
best with all his classic tricks and illusions: The Grand
Opening, Magazine Tear, Floating Organ, Nest Of Boxes, Spirit
Cabinet, Levitation, Drum That Can't Be Beat, Cannon Shot,
Dancing Hank, Blindfolded Audio--sharpshooting and so much
more.
Mr.
Calvert died September 27, 2013. He lived to be 102 and
was an icon of the magic world. He remains a "legend
of legerdemain." The charismatic Calvert was a magician,
actor, pilot, yachtsman, film producer, world traveler,
and adventurer. He is presented here, from the archives
of Bill Rauscher. The performance is shared with the permission
of his wife Tammy and his nephew Fred Calvert. May the memory
of John Calvert be preserved forever?
Mr.
Rauscher wishes to thank Rory Feldman for his efforts and
production skills in creating this memorial video. His Rory
Feldman Productions label has allowed this video to appear
here on YouTube.

6. Message By Andrew Wilson - Re: Palmerston North Convention
--------------------------------------------
Message by Andrew Wilson (NZ)
I
would like to thank all the magicians who came to the convention.
I believe they were surprised and appreciative of the talents
of all our headliners. Joe Monti was especially inventive
and entertaining and his Slydini tribute was expert and
amazing. Marcelo Insua was breathtaking with his coin matrix
work and also his 'any card at any number' presentation.
Other magical support from Michael Woolf, El Gregoe and
Sue, Joel Howlett, Bill Seagraves and Marlene, Joel Fenton,
Jon Zealando and Pip Milford-Hughes was invaluable too.
We had a very sociable and happy time from Saturday afternoon
to Monday lunchtime. The dealers were great and both headliners
sold out.
Professional
photographs were taken by Peter McDermott whose pictures
can be viewed at his website www.bestill.co.nz or email
to peter@bestill.co.nz. Please look him up. His photographs
of the Lifetime Achievement Award winners and others at
the convention are excellent.
A
lost purse was found in the dealers' room. It is a very
small black leather purse with two un-gaffed New Zealand
pennies and two silver coins. Tell me if you have lost this
purse and I will post it back to you (Andrew Wilson at jmwilson@xtra.co.nz).

7. Remarkable Magic #325 - Nick Lewin
--------------------------------------------
Message by Nick Lewin (US)
Clubs,
hugs, ducks and plugs!
I
want to cover a few topics in this week's column and will
begin by extending a really big congratulation to one of
my favorite young comedy magicians in Las Vegas-Adam London.
Adam has recently celebrated the 250th performance of his
Las Vegas show 'Adam London at the D.' This is a really
big milestone and I am delighted for his continuing success.
If
you are not familiar with Adam then I am convinced you will
know all about him before too much more time passes. He
is a wonderfully engaging comedy magician with a delightfully
warm style that is perfectly complimented by his ever so
slightly abrasive manner. I first met Adam when he was the
manager at Mac King's show in Las Vegas. He was a huge asset
to the show and a great loss when he left.
Harrah's
loss, however, was 'The D's' gain and Las Vegas landed one
of its freshest and funniest new afternoon shows. Having
single handedly created the genre of one-man afternoon shows
in Las Vegas nearly 20 years ago, I have always kept a close
eye on the market. When I first saw London's show I was
convinced it 'had legs' and it does, and its success couldn't
be happen to a nicer chap.
If
you have a chance to catch Adam during a visit to Las Vegas
don't miss it! The show highlights London's great likeability
and strong comedic sensibilities. It is rumored that he
honed and perfected his comedy skills by telling 'Knock,
Knock
' jokes during his time as a Mormon missionary.
Congratulations my friend, here's to another 250 shows.
I
am planning to visit with Adam and re-catch his show very
soon, in fact I want to combine it with a long overdue visit
to see Mike Hammer's show at the 'Golden Nugget.' Mike is
another very funny young man who has kept his one-man show
running and doing great business for even more shows than
London. I will look forward to writing a review of it for
Magic New Zealand, as I have heard many great things about
it from a wide variety of folk.
I
have been excited and delighted by the incredible compliments
and reviews that my book 'Cruise Magic 101' has received
in the year since it was published. We have shipped copies
to 13 different countries and I am very pleased that it
has been of such interest to so many performers.
I
was extremely flattered to read the following on Michael
Finney's Facebook page:
I
am having more fun than I thought I was going to, being
on the ship this long, (now 8 1/2 months) of the last 11,
I have had a couple dozen entertainers ask me how I got
this gig, and how they can go about getting ship jobs. First
get a copy of Nick Lewin's book on working the ships. It's
a great price for years of ship work information. Although
I had worked a few ships prior to its release about two
years or so ago, I bought it and must give it credit for
the helpful advice business and personal.
Long
time readers of this column will be aware of how much I
respect Michael and his work. He is an ultimate pro and
his kind words mean a huge amount to me.
I
have also been delighted at how many people have bought
the book who have NO interest in performing on a cruise
ship. It is crammed full of pointers and tips that are very
relevant in any performing venue. It even includes a great
trick, which modesty forebears I mention, is worth the twenty
bucks the book costs. Kudos to Steve Mitchell for insisting
I put it in! I still have a limited supply of copies available
via the online store on my website www.nicklewin.com if
you would like an autographed copy. I have several new items
becoming available in upcoming months-why not check them
out.
Finally,
I want to let you know that I will be lecturing and performing
at the upcoming '3 of Clubs' Convention in Vancouver on
the 8th-10th of November. There is a star-studded group
of magicians in attendance, including Shoot Agawa and Daryl.
I am very excited to be part of the event. Check out the
details on their website, it looks like being a really great
convention.
I
am particularly looking forward to experiencing Paul Romhany's
'Murder By Magic' show! Paul has one of the most fertile
minds in magic and as a huge murder mystery buff this event
should be a real blast. I'm just reminding him gently, but
Paul also promised to bake me a Kiwi/Canadian style meat
pie-I'm just mentioning it!

8. Magic - Art, Craft or Neither? (Bruce Gold - Part3)
--------------------------------------------
Message by Anthony Darkstone Europe/USA
Introduction
Bruce
Gold is a comedy magician, stand-up comic and Creative consultant
from Hollywood, California. He has appeared on numerous
TV shows in the USA including, Masters of Illusion, Evening
at the Improv, the sitcom Full House and Oprah.
He
is well known from his role as the manic magician in an
award winning "got milk" TV commercial. In early
October, his shows at The Magic Castle were greeted by wildly
enthusiastic audiences. The TV show Masters of Illusion
is now airing internationally and will be broadcast in The
USA in 2014. Variety Magazine described him as, "A
funny man of considerable charm who deftly combines humor
and hocus-pocus."

Magic
- Art Craft or Neither?
Commentary by Bruce Gold
Like
artists, magicians hope their work will be appreciated by
the public. Regardless of what style of conjuring we choose
to present, we all want our audiences to feel they're witnessing
something special and entertaining. If we wish to elevate
our work to the level of art, then we must refine our techniques
to perfection and strive to evoke ideas and emotions that
transcend the tricks themselves. When we accomplish this
we empower our audiences to take that final step between
artifice and art, when their experience shifts from, "how
does this effect work?" To, "how does this affect
me?"
Wonder
is the currency of our craft, but it is the ability to move
people and create strong emotional connections for them
that places your performance in the realm of art. It's been
said that great art reaches us on more than one level and
I believe this is true in magic also. If you managed to
accomplish this by presenting your own original effects,
then you're almost certain to be recognized among your peers
as a true and innovative artist.
I
must also acknowledge that almost anything, regardless of
how mundane or familiar it may be, can be elevated to the
level of art through a passion for perfection. Anyone who
has witnessed a Japanese tea ceremony can attest to this.
The
real question to ask yourself now is not whether magic is
an art, but if YOUR magic is artfully performed. Why not
think of yourself as an artist as well as a magician and
see if it inspires you. Here's how I recognize someone who
has the soul of an artist: They possess a profound and enduring
desire to be creative and to share their vision. They look
at the world and ask themselves, "What can I bring
that no one else can?"
What
can you bring to your art form?

Perth,
Western Australia
By
Tanya MacNaughton
A
picture of Harry Houdini in handcuffs piqued a young Paul
Cosentino's interest in the world of magic and illusions.
"I was fascinated - what's he doing and more importantly,
why is he doing it?" he said.
"When
I was a kid I was very shy and introverted and had a lot
of learning difficulties.
"My
mum taught me how to read and the reason I started doing
that was (because) the only way to learn magic was through
reading books."
For
this reason, Cosentino chose the Australian Literacy and
Numeracy Foundation as his charity as a contestant on Dancing
with the Stars, an experience he described as a "rollercoaster
ride."
"I
thought it would be a good challenge, lots of fun and (to)
learn something new," he said.
The
Grand Illusionist is no stranger to reality TV, having captured
Australian audience's attention as runner up on Australia's
Got Talent in 2011.
Since
then, Cosentino has won a Merlin award in 2012 for Most
Original International Magician (magic's equivalent of the
Oscars), filmed a three-part TV special The Magic, The Mystery,
The Madness and is about to embark on an extensive national
tour of the same name.
From
his first trick of making a coin disappear for his dad,
Cosentino now performs a combination of street magic, grand
illusion and escapes.
"I
think (audiences) will be surprised about how potent the
magic is live," he said.
"Sometimes
people can go 'oh, maybe it was a TV trick' even though
there's no TV magic at all, but when I appear in front of
your eyes or disappear or whatever it might be, it's very
hard to diminish and dismiss.
"And
same with the escapes, you think you're drawn into them
on TV, wait until you see it live."
While
Cosentino's upcoming tour will take him around Australia
and to New Zealand, he hopes to one day take his show to
America.
"The
ultimate would be to have my own show on Broadway one day
or Vegas."
"It's
the look on the audience's face when they see something
that's absolutely surprising and amazing that they can't
explain - it's that that really juices me up."
Cosentino
will perform at Riverside Theatre, Perth Convention and
Exhibition Centre at 1.30pm and 7.30pm on November 9.
Tickets from www.ticketek.com.au.
