The Unusualist - AKA Raymond Crowe - Specialty Unusual Optical Illusion
He'll make you laugh, cheer and gasp. He's a home-grown hero - an entertainer extraordinaire of the most unconventional kind. Magician, comedian, mime artist, inventor and master of illusion, he's a multifaceted Aussie genius who keeps you guessing until the last moment.

He's performed alongside Bon Jovi and Russell Brand, and for David Letterman, earned a standing ovation from more than 3000 magicians at an international convention, and was the only Australian chosen to perform on the famous NBC television special, The World's Greatest Magic. And word has it that he's set to be a favourite and finalist in this year's Australia's Got Talent

The Deceptionist - AKA James More - Specialty Death Defying Stunts
He's dark, handsome and a master of modern magic - combining a powerful stage presence with an outstanding talent for the art of illusion.

One of the rising stars of the scene, this British-born, enigmatic character has a smart, slick approach, delivering fast-paced, high-risk tricks and stunts that have been witnessed by millions of people around the world. His many charms have seen him win over international audiences through appearances on major television shows that include ITV's primetime entertainment extravaganza, Fool Us, where he performed for Penn & Teller and Jonathan Ross.

The Futurist - AKA Adam Trent - Specialty Technology Illusions
He's a star for a new generation of magic fans, fusing classic techniques, dancing, comedy and technology in a show that shatters stereotypes for those who think they've seen it all.

His edgy, fun style has been described as 'Justin Timberlake meets David Copperfield' and has put him on a fast-track to global fame. He's performed more than 300 live shows in 19 different countries over the past year and his star is still rising, with two major television shows set to air in the United States this October.

The Master Magician - AKA Luis De Matos - Specialty Mega Illusions
He's the king of conjuring, a superhero of stage illusion. Prepare to be astonished as one of the most renowned magicians of all time pushes the boundaries of the believable with a series of spectacular tricks and stunts that will redefine your idea of what is real.

Hailing from Portugal, he's a multi-award-winning performer and host of the BBC's The Magicians - a superstar of sorcery and a maestro of mentalism with a flair for the theatrical. His use of cutting-edge video techniques makes him truly one of a kind.

The Warrior - AKA - Aaron Crow - Specialty Weapon Magic
He's the ultimate strong, silent type - the man who has mastered some of the most dangerous acts of mentalism on stage without uttering a single word!

Using swords, paintball guns and highly powerful crossbows, Belgium's foremost international magic sensation creates acts that are as unusual as they are entertaining, leaving you on the edge of your seat in anticipation. Little wonder he took the planet by storm after winning first place at the World Championships of Magic.

The Hypnotist - AKA - Dr Scott Lewis - Specialty Stage Hypnotist
He's one of Sin City's greatest stars - the host of the longest- running hypnosis show in Las Vegas history. He's appeared on countless television shows and stages around the world, captivating audiences with his spellbinding talents and opening for major, high-energy musical performers such as Smash Mouth.

Combining the art of hypnosis with outrageous comedy, he taps the creativity of his audiences so they can unleash their inner artist and leave their self-consciousness behind - dancing, singing and strutting their way across the stage. One thing is certain - this is one act where you won't be getting sleepy...

The Manipulator - AKA - Yu Ho-Jin Specialty - Card Manipulation
He's renowned as one of the most masterful sleight-of-hand artists in the world, with dazzling dexterity and the ability to fool even the fastest eye. You'll never figure out how he does it, because he'll always keep his secrets up his sleeve.

Originally from South Korea, he has conquered stages around the world, winning multiple international illusion competitions, the highlight being 2012's FISM - the Golden Globes of the magic community. His act has become the benchmark of illusion.

5. Mystery School Monday" Show, Free To All At Mcbridemagic.tv
--------------------------------------------
Message by Jeff McBride (US)

Beginning in September, 2013, our format is changing somewhat. On the first Monday of each month, we will broadcast our usual hour long "Mystery School Monday" show, free to all at McBridemagic.tv. Every other Monday of the month we will have a different host opening the show with a 15 minute discussion, promptly at 7:00pm, which is free and open to all, discussing the subjects to be covered that week. Immediately following that 15 minute free session, we will be hosting weekly Locked Room sessions for Magic & Mystery School Members only. Because these sessions are closed, except to our Members, we will be free to go a bit deeper, discussing techniques and tricks in a way we would not be comfortable doing in sessions open to the public at large.

California Magic Theatre.

Before I begin this week's column I would like to thank my readers who took the time to communicate with me about last week's article about 'Focusing on Focus.' I had a great deal of interest in this topic and appreciate your emails.

My old friend Tim Glander sent me a note that included the following quote on the topic, Don Alan always taught me: "Edit, edit, edit! Stop trying to get 10 minutes out of that cup (s) and ball! Ya know Tim, I see these guys flogging that damn trick to death! After 2 minutes, you've lost them" (incidentally, Don's chop cup routine was 99 seconds, 300 words, 11 laughs with 5 effects. Can't get better than that!) I wanted to include that quote in this week's column.

I am very excited to be doing a mini-tour of Northern California this week starting with a corporate date in Sacramento on Thursday. After performing in Sacramento, Susan and I head off to Martinez where I am appearing at 'The California Magic Theatre on Friday and Saturday night.

I have heard many great things about the Magic Dinner Theatre and I am looking forward to being a part of the event. The 'CMDT' is the brain-child of Gerry Griffin and has become a very successful fixture in the magic world in California. With over 800 performances under their belt Gerry seems to have got the format right!

The evening begins at 7.30 and by 10.30 the audience are leaving having experienced close-up magic, a three-person stage show and some delightful fine dining.

7. Saving A Life - #312 - Kyle Peron

I am speechless for the first time in my life. As I type this I am still shaking. Tonight I saved a ladies life. All of it sounds so surreal to me. At the time I did not realize what was happening and that was a good thing. It was afterwards that I realized why she did what she did and said what she said.

I was at my psychiatrist office and even though many seats available, something told me to sit next to this lady and so I did. As soon as I sat down this lady wanted to talk. She was 72 and kept talking past tense and a lot of negative talk. It was talk of how her sounds were well and her husband past away. How everything seemed "done."

She talked about things in the past tense and kept saying "nothing left to do" and the phrase like "no reason for me to even be here." or "I do not want to be here anymore." At the time nothing dawned on me. I just was talking trying to cheer her up. I felt she was talking about location and now that everyone moved away, she wanted to move to a new place.

It was all talk of "completion" as if things were done for her. I kept talking to her and making her laugh or smile because I felt she just seemed down. I did not put two and two together.

Then she did something I will never forget. She said I have something here that I would like you to read. You are so kind I want someone to see it. It was her last will and testament. I read her will she wrote that day and had notarized. Even the letter felt down. She wanted to be cremated and her ashes "thrown away."

Even then I was not sure about what was taking place. I just knew to keep on talking to her and making sure she realized how much I appreciated her and that there are so many things she can do. I was a friend to her for those 20 mins we talked.

She went in to her apt. and when she came out I will never forget this. She stopped right near me with her dr. and she shook my hand firmly and stared in my eyes. As tears rolled down her cheek she said to me "THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart. You cheered me up in ways you will never know simply because you cared when no one else did. Thank you."

I said you are welcome and smiled and she walked away and as she walked out the door she was all smiles and she turned to me, smiled and waved.

It was in the truck when all of a sudden it was like a brick hit me in the face. It was that moment I realized this lady wanted to end her life. She was sharing with me her death wish. She wanted her life to end because it had no more meaning.

What I thought of her when saying "I do not want to be here" and "I have no reason to be here anymore" I thought was a location thing. In reality she was talking she did not want to be on the earth any longer. Showing her will to me was to validate that at least someone saw her wishes. Her story I realized at that last moment was her life story to be shared with at least someone.

I sat there shaking. I had no idea. Clueless perhaps or perhaps Gods way of allowing me to just be a friend to her when she needed one. Why did I sit next to her when I could have at anywhere I wanted. I think God wanted me to.

I will never ever forget this day or the help I provided to save a life. I never got the ladies name and I only hope what I did tonight will change her life forever.

I cannot believe that stupid, clumsy and dweeby me had the power to do much. I am a geek who likes art and magic. Tonight I saved a life and I am not sure how to feel. So many emotions to be honest.

But her handshake and her words and those tears and smile I will always remember.

We as entertainers can do very similar things. Not to save a life but to make a positive difference in the life of someone else. We all have a rare gift you never know who in your audience is having a bad day or what they may be facing in life or going through. To be able to make someone smile or to be a friend simply through a little magic and a little kindness is the best magic trick I think anyone can ever do.

As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you.

8. Shenanigans Irish Magic Convention
--------------------------------------------
Message by Brendan Byrne (Ireland)

Shenanigans is back!!! Juan Tamariz & John Archer are the first two acts to be announced that will appear at Shenanigans, the Irish magic convention which takes place on the outskirts of beautiful Dublin from 2nd - 4th May 2014.

The word Shenanigans is defined by one online dictionary as random adventures of an often silly nature. This pretty much sums up the atmosphere at Irish Magic Conventions. The Irish have a more colloquial term for it called 'craic', pronounced crack. It is a word used to portray a feeling of fun, happy times and great company. But that still doesn't describe the atmosphere you will experience and memories you will bring home from an Irish convention.

A full 3 day Gold Card includes Friday finger food, Saturday Banquet Dinner and Sunday Lunch and is an amazing €120. We also offer a half price WAG's registration for non-magician partners or guardians.

A couple (or junior and guardian) can attend all events together, enjoy Friday Finger Food, Saturday Gala Dinner and Sunday Lunch for a staggering €180. That's right. Two Gold cards, Two full dinners, rakes of finger food and Sunday Lunch. All in a top notch hotel at a top notch conference, with World Class talent for less than the price it would cost you to book an entertainer for a 6 yr. olds birthday party.

Find out more about the event, check out our amazing headquarters hotel and register at www.irishmagicconvention.com

We can't wait to show you the welcome we are famed for. See you all in May.

9. Houdini The Play
----------------------------
Message by Andrew Van Buren

Houdini The Play - stars BAFTA Award winning actor Stuart Brennan as Theo (Harry Houdini's Brother), Harry Potter star Evanna Lynch as Bess (Harry Houdini's wife) and Jamie Nichols as Harry Houdini.

Houdini is about the life of two of the greatest performers the world has ever known - the Houdini Brothers: stuntmen, illusionists, magicians. The play is set throughout - and beyond - the astonishing career of the great Harry Houdini.

Theatre Giant's creative director Peter Snee directs Stuart Brennan's sharply observed script with a creative dream team that includes costume designer Fraz Roughton, sound designer Daffyd Gough, composer Tord Brudevoll & magic consultant & advisor Andrew Van Buren.

Stuart Brennan (Theo) was still a student in 2001 when he founded Burn Hand Film Productions and to date has produced over 20 shorts and feature films, working with many stars including Rutger Hauer, Shane Richie, Edward Furlong, Sean Pertwee, John Noble, and Corey Feldman.

In the same year, he became the first Englishman to win the BAFTA Cymru Award for Best Actor, for his portrayal of boxing legend Howard Winstone in the film Risen. He was also made an honorary WBC World Boxing Champion in recognition of his boxing feats in the film.

More recently, he played the lead role in the feature film The Reverend opposite Tamer Hassan and played the lead male in the film Serial Killer. After Houdini, he will take the lead role in the film tomorrow, the first British film to be executively produced by film legend Martin Scorsese.

Evanna Lynch (Bess) is well known for playing Luna Lovegood in the Harry Potter film series. At the age of 14 she was cast in the fifth film in the series, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. She then went on to appear in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Parts 1 and 2.

Originally from County Louth in Ireland and now based in California, Evanna studied drama at the Centre for the Talented Youth of Ireland and continued her lessons while on the Harry Potter set.

Evanna has also guest starred as Princess Alehna in the first season finale of the Sky 1 TV series, Sinbad and is set to star in indie teen comedy GBF, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival this year.

Jamie Nichols (Houdini) trained at Bodens College of Performing Arts and recently played Luke Prospect in Rikki Beadle-Blair's Gutted at Theatre Royal, Stratford while other theatre credits include The Wedding Singer - the Musical, Eurobeat - Almost Eurovision (both at Millfield Theatre) and Jesus Christ Superstar (Wyllyotts Theatre).

The show is currently touring the UK. Blackpool Grand Theatre until 21st Sept. Swansea 24th - 28th Sept. Windsor 30th - 5th Oct. Dublin 7th - 12th Oct.

14. Mad As Hell!
--------------------------------------------
Message by Jeff McBride (US)

Each time we face a new challenge, we have an opportunity to break old patterns. We can react to challenges in old ways (as seen above), or move beyond our old habits and limitations, and resolve conflict in new and more enlightened ways. One of the best pieces of advice I've ever gotten from Max Maven is; "If you get mad…you lose."

So before the next time you get "mad as hell," read this short, but potent, Samurai parable.

http://www.onbeing.org/blog/the-little-monk-and-the-samurai-a-zen-parable/5496

"A smooth sea never made a skilled sailor"
-- English proverb
Facing Challenges and having Nothing to Lose!
When I think of all the times I encounter "trouble" along the road, I remind myself to reframe each experience as a "challenge", and that facing each of these challenges makes me wiser! Yes, that is right my friends… over the years I've stopped using the words "troubles" and "problems", and I've replaced both these words in my vocabulary with "challenges".

Hint: try this as an exercise! Just stop using the words and they seem to go away! Now all I have are "challenges"…. and I love a good challenge!

Why not take a risk and face your next challenge in a new way? There is NOTHING to lose!
If you win, you will be happy;
if you lose, you will be wise.
-- Zen wisdom
Hecklers, Critics and Bullies
Even the top pros face extreme challenges. Many of us encounter bullies, hecklers and haters. What to the pros do? Take a look at this film and find out. Maybe you'll find it to be as interesting as I did.

This documentary is titled Heckler, and I would consider it essential viewing for anyone who stands on a stage. (Thank you, Ferdinando Buscema for finding this!)

15. Update - Palmerston North Magic Circle Convention
--------------------------------------------
Message by Andrew Wilson (New Zealand)

Palmerston North 26th - 28th October 2013

Hosted by the Palmerston North Magic Circle (Inc.) and supported by IBM Ring 160

We (the convention committee and the PNMC) have agreed that numbers are encouraging enough not to invoke the price rise that might have followed the Early Bird invitation. Registration will continue to be the wonderful low price of $90 for adult magicians and $50 for wives, partners, assistants and all students in education.

The Night Before Cabaret will now take place in Valentine's Restaurant nearby in Featherston Street. Meet from around 7 p.m. and start buffet eating around 7.30 p.m. Cabaret will follow.

We are recommending The China Town Restaurant for a good and quick meal before the Gala Show.

Our favourite local eatery, the China Town Restaurant on Cuba St (where we tend to taker magic guests giving lectures) has been alerted to a group of magicians coming on Sunday 27th because it is very good value and very efficient.
