3. Paul Daniels Magic Shows Now On DVD
--------------------------------------------
Message by Paul Daniels (UK)
Nope,
PDMS is not some new complaint or disease. For many many
years magicians from all over the world have been emailing
me about the Paul Daniels Magic Shows and thank you all
very much for the compliments.
Now
I do have some, converted to DVDs, from my own collections,
that I am selling off and if anyone is interested then they
can email me at thepauldaniels@gmail.com and I'll send out
the details.
Brendan,
who just bought a batch from me, sent this..."Thank
You for the amazing DVDs. The quality is really amazing
and I'm truly delighted with them. As you know I have been
collecting your shows for a long time and even though I
have some really near perfect quality ones, I haven't had
the time to transfer them to DVD and the hassle of trying
to find missing ones and better quality ones is exhausting.
So a big big thank you once again. I can't wait to buy more
from you."
Two
things: I am very pleased with the quality and also watching
them again has reminded me of how I and my team kept coming
up with good routines, even with old or standard tricks.
For example, smoking in public was banned and seen as 'not
good'... but we did the Smoke Vase with a new presentation,
and no cigarettes. All good stuff and I'm glad it is getting
'out there'.

6. Remarkable Magic #316 - Nick Lewin
--------------------------------------------
Message by Nick Lewin (US)
'Esther's Follies.'
As
a fully paid-up, card-carrying magician I have always obeyed
the first commandment of magic and never reveal a secret.
I just hate to do it-so I don't. In this week's column I
am going to flat out break this code. I am going to give
away one of the best-kept secrets in magic. Well it may
not be a strict secret but it is such a great show that
I just have to spread the word.
In
the heart of beautiful 6th street in Austin, Texas is a
historic little theatre located at number 521. It is the
Cactus Theatre and the home of 'Esther's Follies,' which
in my opinion is one of the smartest, funniest and coolest
revue shows to be found anywhere. Featured in the show is
Ray Anderson who has my vote as the funniest comedy illusionists
in the world.
In
the 30s and 40s the Cactus Theatre was owned by legendary
vaudeville performer Richard 'Skinny' Pryor, but the 'Esther's
Follies' band of entertainers started to create a legend
in the Spring of 1977 when Michael Shelton and Shannon Sedwick
leased the property. 35 years later it is a Texas classic
and continues going from strength to strength.
The
name, décor and theme of the show are reflections
of the late, great swimming and movie star Esther Williams.
The show is a collection of political skits, sketches, singing,
dancing, comedy and magic; that packs so much entertainment
into 90 minutes that it is almost a feat of magic itself.
It is as timeless as vaudeville and as topical as the morning
news.
In
fact, each night, the entertainment spills right out from
the showroom and onto bustling 6th Street. The rear wall
of the stage has two large windows that reveal all the action
going on in front of the theatre. Every single inch of the
theatre is also utilized to present a good-natured show
that has the audience howling from start to finish.
The
team of players present their entertainment at such a whirlwind
pace that you have to really focus to fully grasp what a
talented bunch they are. I can't speak highly enough about
their individual and collective skills. Original owner Shannon
Sedwick is still performing in the show and is a joy to
behold. She sets the tone of versatility and talent that
is the keynote of the troupe.
The
featured entertainer in the show is Ray Anderson, who has
spent thirty years in the show, polishing his illusion,
comedy, manipulative and audience participation into one
of the most carefully constructed performances in the magic
world. There isn't a dull moment when Anderson is onstage.
He has hit the point where there isn't a wasted word or
glance in his presentation; everything has a reason and
a pay-off.
Performing
immaculate and inventive large-scale illusions, or parodying
the genre, it is truly an object lesson in performing skills
to watch as Anderson does his thing-- Ray quite simply 'owns'
the stage. When Anderson brings two assistants onstage to
participate in his show, it is a primer in show biz savvy
to see how they are treated as guest stars and become a
major factor in the fabric of the show. The look of delight
on their faces as they return to their seats in the audience
says it all.
If
you are visiting Austin it is a no brainer for any magician
to catch this show as there is a huge amount to learn from
it. If you are in the mood to laugh and learn-- then fly
into Austin and catch this show regardless of where you
live. It is worth the journey. I have been playing Vegas
since the 70s and living here for nearly 20 years and this
show was more fun and superior to any magic/revue that I
have seen in Sin City.
I
will be writing a full story on Ray and 'Esther's Follies'
for the next edition of 'Vanish Magazine' and go into more
details about Ray and include photographs of the show. If
you chance to find yourself in Austin (not many finer cities
to be in) then contact the box office at www.esthersfollies.com
and line up your tickets. The show plays 5 times a week
with one show on Thursday and two shows on Friday and Saturday.
The theatre was jam packed when we visited so book up those
tickets in advance-you won't be sorry!
I
have just added three new items to the Online Store on my

Ultimate Signed Card in Envelope.'

7. Show Warm Up - Powerful Solution - #309 - Kyle Peron
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kyle Peron
magic4u02@aol.com
http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com
http://www.kpmagicproducts.com
Have you ever found yourself at a gig and the audience starts
coming down and most are seated? You are about to begin
but realize you can't start because more folks are still
either coming in or they are waiting on a "few"
others? Or your audience is seated but you cannot start
because it is not start time yet or because the client or
MC has not arrived yet to announce you or to say a few memos
and notes?
If you are laughing right now I know why. It is because
you have experienced this all too many times. Most of us
have. It comes with the territory. Unless you have the luxury
of being at a theater or similar venue, you do not have
the opportunity to stay in a green room till you can go
on.
Even if you did have that opportunity, often times you are
on stage or near stage in plain view of the audience simply
because you are supposed to be on in 5-10 minutes and you
need to do last minute things.
I bring this up because not only does it happen, but what
do YOU do about it? I do not mean what you do about the
MC or the client. I mean what do you do about that awkward
period of time where the audience is staring directly at
you but the show is not to start yet?
Most might try and ignore the audience and check your props
and such. Some might stay to the side of the stage and just
wait it out.
To me that never seemed right. It just seemed awkward and
in many ways rude to the audience. If the audience is out
there, then I like to acknowledge them in some way. Yes
the show has not started, but in many ways, that does not
mean I can't interact with them.
This time the audience is feeling you out. They have no
idea who you are and are trying to determine how this is
all going to go down. They want to know if they are going
to like YOU or YOUR show. By ignoring them, it sends the
wrong message. It sends the impression that you really don't
care and that you are just doing this because it is your
'job."
Now this may not be true at all. However, a lot of what
we do is based on perceptions and the first impression you
make is a big one. So I like to handle these situations.
I like to figure out ways and means in which to interact
with them before the show starts. Do I have to do this?
Absolutely not. Do I want to do this.. YES, YES and YES!!
Let me tell you why.
Just as much as they are "feeling" me out, I also
need a way to feel the audience out as well. Start a show
cold is often not as easy as starting the show warm. Starting
cold means you have no prior interaction with the audience
at all before the show starts. This is OK but just means
you have to work harder in the beginning of the show to
have the audience warm up to you and get to know you.
Now how cool would it be if the audience already knows you,
always loves you and has laughed with you before the show
starts? THIS is just one reason why I will interact with
them when the above situation happens. It gives me a chance
to scope out the audience. I can start to know who would
be a perfect helper and who I may need to stay away from
bringing up. It lets me know who the gigglers are and who
interacts well.
It is also so easy to do. You do not even need to do magic.
Just go out there and acknowledge the crowd and start talking.
Have fun with them. Get to know them and laugh along with
them. Get them excited. It is easier the more you do it
but it does make a difference.
There are many things you can do and I do a lot of them.
I will share with you a quick one that is just funny and
can change for any market but works.
I start by introducing myself and stating the show will
be starting real soon. But before we start I have a few
questions I need to ask them all. I then have them raise
their hands to the questions I ask them.
Raise your hand if you are here to have an awesome time?
Raise your hand if you are here to see some great magic?
Raise your hand if your wife dragged you here? (Used for
festival events and other markets and I stare at a guy who
looks bored).
Raise your hand if you like the color red?
Raise your hand if you like the color blue?
Raise your hand if you like the color Ugly Dirt Brown?
Raise your hand if you like Pizza?
Raise your hand if you love hot dogs?
Raise your hand if you LOVE green broccoli with Brussel
sprouts?
Raise your hand if you are ready for the show to start?
Raise your hand if you are tired of raising your hand?
Well that is what I thought so let's get the show started
with a little music, magic and a lot of fun.
As you can see this can be and is hilarious. After every
set of questions I improv off the reactions. It is so easy
to do and they expect it. This allows total interaction
and you can easily determine who will be a good helper later
in your show. By the time the show really starts, they already
like you and have warmed up to you.
Give it a try and work on your own means of interacting
before the show starts. You will be amazed at the results
it brings you.
As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your
thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or
suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly
at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you.

10. Information About Down In Flames Film
--------------------------------------------
Message by R.J. Lewis
We
just finished principal shooting on "Down In Flames
- The True Story of Tony 'Volcano' Valenci".
This
project involved many in the magic community, including
Peter, Michael Chaut, Todd Robbins, Richie Magic and the
Great Throwdini.
I
have a press release and photos included. We have 30 days
left to our fund-raising, so any place you could tell about
us would be appreciated.
R.J.
Lewis
------------------------------------
New Film To Be Hotter Than Fire Eating
Starting
on August 20, a compelling new film, "Down In Flames:
The True Story of Tony 'Volcano' Valenci", will begin
shooting in the New York area. The film follows title character
Tony 'Volcano' Valenci, a fire-eater trying to find his
way into the record books.
This
film will combine the talents of director William J. Stribling
and R.J. Lewis. The two previously worked together on the
award-winning short film, "Beyond Belief". This
dark comedy was Mr. Stribling's NYU thesis film about a
down-on-his-luck magician trying to make his troubles disappear.
"Beyond
Belief" has been an Official Selection of over 22 film
festivals across the globe, winning several awards and nominations
along the way, including Mr. Lewis taking home Best Actor
In A Short Film at the Los Angeles Comedy Festival.
The
duo are thrilled for the chance work together again. Mr.
Stribling is directing "Down In Flames" while
Mr. Lewis is the Executive Producer through his nonprofit
company Arjay Entertainment, Inc., a 501(c)3 charity in
the state of New Jersey. Cinematographer Alex Gallitano,
who shot "Beyond Belief," will join the crew as
Director of Photography.
The
crew will follow the exploits of Tony 'Volcano' Valenci,
renowned fire eater, as he takes on increasingly difficult
stunts to reach his goal of a world record. Featured in
the film will be world record holders David "Throwdini"
Adamovich, champion knife-thrower; Richie Magic, the "Human
Ashtray"; and Todd Robbins, light bulb-eating champion.
These record holders will comment on their association with
Tony and how they hope for him to succeed in his quest to
get his name in the record books.
"Down
in Flames" is a classic story turned on its head, but
one that connects with people on a deeper level. We all
have a little bit of "Tony" in us; that yearning
to push the boundaries and see what we're capable of achieving.
Mr. Stribling calls Tony "a character not unlike Don
Quixote. He's passionate, with dreams of grandeur, and just
crazy enough to go on this wild adventure. All he's missing
is a portly sidekick."
This
film is packed full of amazing feats, including fire eating,
fire juggling, fire blowing, light bulb eating, sword swallowing,
cigarette eating, and even Sky-Diving. Tony's quest for
greatness takes him on a wild journey, one that will both
inspire and entertain audiences and artists alike.
This
film is being shot "documentary-style," and you
can help by visit our indiegogo page: http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/down-in-flames-the-true-story-of-tony-volcano-valenci/x/3948057
Any
small donation will help this creative team create this
hilarious tall tale to the delight and intrigue audiences
all over the world. All donations are tax deductible.

12. Cancellation Of The Kramien Auction - September 1.
--------------------------------------------
Message by David Charvet (US)
I
have been informed by the Kramien family that due to medical
reasons they are cancelling the auction scheduled for Sunday,
September 1 and the show scheduled for August 31.
The
following is the message released by the family:
"August
22, 2013
To
Our Friends In the Magic Fraternity -
Over
the past several months, excitement has been running high
in anticipation of the Kramien Magic Auction, scheduled
for September 1, 2013. We have heard from many old friends,
performers, collectors and enthusiasts around the world.
Regrettably,
due to circumstances beyond our control we are taking this
opportunity to inform everyone that we must CANCEL the auction
at this time.
In
the last week, medical issues affecting both Stan and Rick
Kramien have necessitated this decision.
We
would like to thank David Charvet, who cataloged and organized
the auction. We would also like to thank David Goodman for
his help and understanding at this decision.
Especially,
we would like to thank all of you who planned to attend
and for your continued friendship.
Sincerely,
Stan

If
the auction is rescheduled, notice will be made on the Magic
New Zealand e-zine.

13. Show Undercutting
--------------------------------------------
Message by Paul Romhany
I
read your opening remark about some guy undercutting everybody
else in Auckland for the kids market. $75 for an hour show
is even lower than I used to charge when I was a teenager
doing kids parties! 25 years ago!!
One
can only assume this guy is desperate for work - there can
be no other explanation. I guess it's also the old saying
if you pay peanuts you'll get monkeys. History shows that
these people aren't around for very long due to their bad
business ethics and bad business choices. For them often
it's a short term fix to their financial problems and it's
not long term. In the long term they will suffer but sadly
in the meantime all the professionals who rely on the kids
market are also paying for this clowns mistakes.
You
raised the question does it happen elsewhere. I was talking
to a few friends here in Vancouver and it's just as bad,
although this could actually be a legal issue. There is
a local clown/magician who not only charges $75 an hour
but actually puts sites up on the internet using other performers'
names.
He
is using their names to get their hits on the internet,
and when you click on it he says he charges $75 where as
magician X charge $250. He then goes on to say how much
more value he gives than magician X.
I'm
no legal expert but I'm sure there is something that can
be done here. It's certainly harming the guys who he is
picking on.
Here
is an example where he attacks Matthew Johnson who performs
kid's parties and makes balloon animals.
http://hot-flashes-begone.blogspot.ca/
Matthew has warned him but this guy just keeps going.
I'm
sure Matthew would appreciate any advice on how to stop
this guy from using his name in a bad light like this.

Message by Ray Roch
Authored
by Ray Roch Edition: 1
Really
"Outside of the Box!"
Roch's
thinking is really "Outside of the Box" when it
comes to something so innocent as a little origami box built
in front of you in a matter of seconds out of just six playing
cards. Ray teaches how to quickly build, and gives away
his in depth secrets, which turns his Impossible Box into
a diabolical magical device for producing, vanishing and
switching.
The
moves which Ray showed us could have only be honed through
years of performance, but Ray is able to teach us the artifice
which makes the Impossible possible to master, and completely
adaptable to one's own routine and patter. Not only does
Roch give you a very magical and entertaining routine which
even fools magicians, but he also gives you the ability
to easily create an instant cost-nothing working prop anytime
for yourself or a unique souvenir for your volunteer which
that person will value and keep forever.

About
the author: Long time Magician, Ray Roch is the originator
of a DVD called "The Impossible Box", a chronicle
showing how to build and load an origami card box utilizing
6 playing cards.
There
are multiple methods of loading items shown during its construction,
including a bonus effect where the completed box mysteriously
moves and levitates. These effects, along with a routine
where a chosen card is found folded in a box are all included
in "The Impossible Box".
However
since the DVD was made, Ray made significant improvements
to his original concept and reveals them in his "No
Gimmick" Chop-Box book.
