2. Want To Be One Of The Illusionists?
--------------------------------------------
By Stan Allen, Editor of MAGIC Magazine
Each
month in Magic New Zealand, I mention one or two major stories
in the current issue of MAGIC Magazine. And we certainly
have those stories this month: Sos & Victoria and their
amazing family, Bizzaro, How to work Fringe Festivals, and
Festivals for the Rest of Us! But there are also little
items that might turn out to be huge to the right reader.
This
month, we have a short interview with Simon Painter, the
producer of The Illusionists touring show. Toward the end,
he mentions that there is a second unit of the show being
assembled, and that he's looking for acts. He explains what
he wants and what you should do if you think you fill the
bill.
This
little story and a lot more can be found in the August 2013
issue of MAGIC Magazine. Visit www.MAGICmagazine.com.

5. Review On The I.B.M. 85th Annual Convention
---------------------------------------------
Message by Becki Wells (US)
The
International Brotherhood of Magicians just completed a
successful 85th Annual Convention in Phoenix, Arizona.
The
event was attended by over 500 magicians and guests from
around the world. New events at this convention included
the I.B.M. Lance Burton Teen Seminar, attended by 24 young
magicians from around the U.S.A, Canada, England, Japan,
and Thailand; and the Magic Film Festival which featured
three full length magic films.
Registrants
enjoyed four days of lectures, demonstrations, contests,
close-up shows and over 25 magic dealers. Three evening
shows at the Orpheum Theater featured the best in magic.
André
Kole was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award and
he, along with his son Tim, treated the audience to a performance
that will long be remembered. Finally, congratulations to
our attendees for participating in the Share The Magic Program
- through the sale of special convention pins and two auctions,
the I.B.M. raised over $6,000.00 for the Michael Finney
Foundation which supports such programs as Operation Smile
and Wounded Warrior.
Remember
next year the I.B.M. and the S.A.M. are producing a Combined
Convention July 1-5, 2014 in St. Louis, MO. For more details

Message by Nick Lewin (US)
Maurice
Fogel Revisited.
If you have been following my writings you are probably
aware of the huge respect I have for the late, great Maurice
Fogel. I wanted to write another brief column about this
magnificent showman and try and define why he holds such
a huge place in my heart both as a person and a performer.
If
you never saw Maurice perform then you missed a very visionary
entertainer who understood things that would not become
standard thinking until several generations after his death.
Fogel was more than just a 'mindreader,' he was an
all round entertainer with an understanding of his medium
that is only now being appreciated by those of us who were
lucky enough to experience his approach.
There
was nothing about Fogel's work that said, 'Look how clever
I am', he appeared to share amazing abilities in a humorous
and totally human manner. His incredibly dynamic presentation
was tempered by a humorous approach that maximized the impact
of his amazing feats. An audience could never have a moments
doubt that this was a very real person who just happened
to be performing unbelievable effects.
If
an audience had a tendency to believe in psychic phenomena
then they had every reason to believe that what Maurice
did was genuine. For non-believers, Fogel's humorous approach
allowed them to enjoy what he did and retain a 'wink and
a nod' about the nature of his material. To put it another
way, he had the best of each and every world.
The
impressive result of the 'Fogel Approach' was to disarm
and up-end the average audience's expectations. That to
me is the most effective way to make a real dent in the
audience's skepticism about a performers 'hidden powers.'
Max Maven and Jon Stetson are just two of the contemporary
mentalists who have understood this approach and used the
insight to pay great dividends in their work, and I love
both of them.
Maurice
managed to be larger than life and yet very much part of
your life, it was a very neat juggling act that was as effective
as it was endearing. No one likes a smart-ass, (though magicians
love to buy their ideas) who puts their abilities beyond
that of their viewers, and the same is true of any magician
who takes himself too seriously. There is nothing more 'icky'
than a magician who doesn't realize his audience is a jump
ahead of him.
Rather
than appear obnoxiously proud of his skills, Fogel just
appeared delighted that they were functioning and working.
This created an invisible bond with his audience that allowed
his spectators to become part of his triumphs. This was
the ultimate 'win-win' way to sell believability of the
unbelievable.
Mentalism
is now the 'approach de jour' of professional magicians;
Fogel was years ahead of his time in his choice from the
magical menu. It would be amazing to see the impact of a
Fogel performance now that what he did is the mainstream
of magical entertainment instead of a sideline. He would
kick ass big time!
What
can you take away from my 'Fogel Revisited' column here
in Magic New Zealand? Well, if you want to know more details
about my frequently expressed praise about Maurice's approach
to Mentalism then you might want to read some of my previously
published writings. However it would be even better if you
seek out the routines and writings about this giant of magical
entertainment--there is MUCH to learn.
I was proud to be a friend of Maurice; I learned a huge
amount from this remarkable performer and what I learned
is more valid today than ever before. English mentalist
Derren Brown is a contemporary master of mental magic but
he stands on the shoulders of Fogel, who was as ahead of
his time as he was part of his time. It sometimes seems
that every magician wants to be a mentalist now; to paraphrase
the song Fogel was a mindreader before mindreading was cool.
He was a true hero to me.

8. The Magic Community - A Heart-Felt Story - #305 - Kyle
Peron
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kyle Peron
magic4u02@aol.com
http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com
http://www.kpmagicproducts.com
The magic community is just that, a community. Any community
is based on neighbors and peers and hopefully friendships.
Like any community, there are problems to be solved, battles
to be won and people who just do not see eye to eye. The
magic community is no different.
We are a community of brother and sisters who share in the
art of magic. But like any community there are differences.
There are factions. There are politics and strife. Some
think they know everything and others feel shunning others
is their right. There is stealing and "borrowing".
There are battles and differences. This should be expected
in any community whether right or wrong.
But I am not here to dwell on the negative. I am here to
share with you something I have seen in the past few weeks
that has just made me so damn proud to be in this magic
community.
I will share with you my personal account and my personal
story. I do this not for folks to feel sorry for me. I do
it to show you something far more important and far more
amazing.
Over the years I have dealt with so much in my life. I am
a deaf performer and I have an acute anxiety disorder. I
seem to get medical issues at the drop of a pin. It has
never been easy and often a struggle. However, I have never
given up and I press forward to do the best I can and to
enjoy the art of magic that I love so much.
Recently, I had a major setback. I was having major difficulty
breathing and it was determined my nose (in short) was very
messed up. There was no other option for me but fairly heavy
surgery to address the issue. At the same time I have an
acute anxiety disorder. One of my triggers is breathing.
If I cannot breathe well, I panic. And if you have ever
experienced panic and panic attacks, you know there is not
much worse to have to deal with.
Your body reacts even though your mind is telling you it
is ridiculous. You feel no control over anything. It is
as if you lose total control over functions. You can't focus
and you literally feel like you are going to die. I have
had it under control for years, but they switched my meds
on me. Now this nasal issue came up at the same time and
let's just say I was and have been in really bad shape.
The past few weeks have been hell for me and that is putting
it nicely. But why do I tell you all of this. I share this
to let you know of how I have seen the magical community.
I have never seen such an outpouring of love, respect, well
wishes and prayers then I have received over the past few
weeks from the magic community. My magic brothers and sisters
every single day sending me messages of hope and encouragement.
Some folks do not even know me but took the time out of
their busy day to drop me a line to make me feel better
and to let me know they are thinking of me. I have had so
many friends help me with the shows I have had to cancel
due to my illness. They have come to help me out and support
me.
I never once asked these folks to do this for me. They ALL
did it on their own because we are a magic community. We
are peers in magic. We are brothers and sisters sharing
the art we love so much.
I am in tears writing this. You have no idea how much this
all has meant to me. Every letter, every post and every
email makes me smile as I struggle each day to get better.
To know my magic community is out there for me makes me
realize just how darn cool it is to be in the magical arts.
I am in the final stages of healing and I hope to be back
to my great self very soon. I still have a ways to go but
I know the magic community will be there to assist me and
help me and cheer me up when I need it the most.
To ALL of you I say a heart-felt thank you.
As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your
thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or
suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly
at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you.

PS: I dedicate this article to the one person who has been
by my side through hell and back. My wife Kelly. Without
her I am nothing. Without her I would never be able to handle
this. I love you babe.

11. Wayne Houchin Lecture in Auckland 12th July 2013
--------------------------------------------
Message by Mike Easterbrook (New Zealand)
There
was me and around 65 other interested magicians who came
along for this entertaining and thoughtful lecture by this
young creative entertainer from the USA.
Unless
you read the reports or had seen the You Tube clips of Wayne,
who is a genuinely nice person being set on fire by some
weirdo you wouldn't know that this had happened. A real
trick in itself, but it's been a while since this deliberate
act and he looks good. Only touching on the issue very briefly,
when he warmed his fingers with a lighter during a card
trick and said "I learned this from being on TV in
the Dominican Republic!"
We
watched him perform his magic which opened with his 'Thread
from the eye' which certainly had the cringe factor but
not so bad you couldn't watch it till the end. I think there
would have been maybe one or two in the room who said they
would perform it, or maybe that was 'they would like to!'
after he asked for a show of hands on who would!
He
explained several of his very entertaining and quite baffling
routines including his presentation of the Monte Cristo
deck, Sinful and some others. He didn't do a whole lot of
stuff but what he did do he did very well, and the explanations
were lucid and well thought out.
Even
when Wayne said "any questions?" our own Jon Zealando,
(a creative person in his own right,) said "Only about
a thousand!"
Touching
on creativity he mentioned Escher (the Dutch artist) and
Michael Ammar as two of his inspirational idols. Also performed
and explained were TnR card (Counterfeit Hollingworth),
Blackjack Triumph, and Stigmata.
All with Wayne's own personal touches. Good skills!
He
ended his lecture with a mention that he sometimes has years
of experimenting, often from start to finish around 3-4
years before he has got the trick to where he wants it to
be.
Food for thought for those who came along to watch I'm sure.
Who has bought a trick from a dealer in the morning and
put it into the show that afternoon?
I thought it was great. Come again Wayne.
