2. Broken Wand - Amos Levkovitch
--------------------------------------------
Message by Jonathan Pendragon (US)
My
good friend, Amos Levkovitch, passed away early Thursday
morning in Los Angeles, California.
He
won the Stage Magician of the Year award twice from the
AMA. He was known for his good nature towards all, I honestly
can't think of a single person who didn't like him. He will
be missed most because of this; his presence just brightened
the room and made everybody feel good.

3. Amos Levkovitch's Loses Battle With Cancer
--------------------------------------------
Message by Dale Salwak (US)
I
am saddened to say that after a two-year heroic battle with
cancer, the brilliant dove magician and the sweetest soul
you'll ever meet - has passed away.
I
first met Amos Levkovitch in 1972, in Santa Monica, California,
where we were performing together on a show produced by
Dick Barry. Instantly we felt a connection - and that connection
lasted all these years as we grew to be brothers in every
sense of the word.
As
performers we traveled the world together. We had more laughs
and good times between us than we could count - and many,
many deep conversations about the essentials in life. All
this I cherish. He was there for me and my family whenever
we needed him. Now we are here for his wife, Leonora, and
family, as we honor his memory and his legacy.
May
He whose peace passes all understanding continue to be with
them in the time ahead. Private services are scheduled for
Friday, June 28th, and a full report will appear in the
August issue of MAGIC

The Gift
By Jamie D. Grant
It was the worst night of Dan Harlan's life. A crime he
doesn't remember, a very public embarrassment, and a life-altering
aftermath. With that all behind him now, Dan Harlan reflects
on what happened and what a gift it may have been.

6. Remarkable Magic #307 - Nick Lewin
--------------------------------------------
Message by Nick Lewin (US)
A
word or two about microphones.
One
of the best friends that a performer has is his microphone
armed with a microphone you are suddenly not one of the
audience, but somebody of authority. The easiest way to
invite heckling is to work with no microphone and the best
way to overcome a heckler is to have volume on your side.
The
best thing about a good microphone is that it allows you
to use a much more conversational tone with the crowd and
not sound strained or awkward. That mic, however, is only
as useful as the sound system it is hooked up to and the
monitors that let you hear what the audience is hearing.
Often speakers need to be 're-angled' pointing away from
the stage so that you avoid feedback.
There
is a tiny borderline when you have to decide whether there
are enough people in your audience to justify/necessitate
the use of amplification. This is actually the exact spot
that draws the distinction between a close-up and stand-up
show. I usually work much larger shows but I would say the
dividing line is at around forty people-there are no fixed
rules though.
Contemporary
microphones divide into three basic flavors
1 Handheld (wireless or wired)
2 Lavalier (or body mic)
3 Head Set.
In
a perfect world, a headset gives the best overall performance
and is the least likely to feedback at the crowd. If you
are used to working with a headset then you pretty much
forget you are wearing it. The key element is just to make
sure that you have a brand new battery installed in the
unit immediately before show time.
One
really nice thing about a headset is that it should position
the microphone in exactly the right place to ensure it sounding
good-this sweet spot is just below and to one side of the
corner of your mouth. Make sure you have some band-aids
or flesh colored sticky tape on hand to help secure the
mic in this position.
Lavelier
microphones are a little more temperamental about their
sound quality and picking up your vocal. Generally speaking
the actual microphone is either attached to the lapel of
your jacket or the front/center of your shirt. The more
central the mic is situated the better the sound because
it fluctuates less when your head is turned to side.
If
you are going to use a wired hand held microphone it is
a good thing to make sure in advance that there is plenty
of lead attached to it. You don't want to discover there
isn't enough cord during the performance. You should make
sure this is taken care of when you have your sound check.
You can also set the height of the microphone stand.
A
hand held wireless microphone is generally a pretty solid
mic to use and keeps death defying feedback screams to a
minimum. If you use any hand held unit then you will need
a microphone holder to wear the mic in the correct position.
This position, incidentally, is approximately one hands
width below your chin.
I
always have a microphone holder in my pocket even if I am
using a head set, in case there is a problem with your main
unit. I always stipulate that a back-up microphone is available
(and turned on) at the side of the stage. This is a wise
move that will make you look like an 'uber-pro' on the occasions
when disaster hits the soundboard. You not only look prepared
but you are prepared.
I
talked about the correct style and usage of microphone holders
in my recent book on the 'Himber Linking Finger Rings' and
was surprised at how many people commented that they didn't
own a really good microphone holder-to me it is one of the
most inexpensive but vital utilities that a performer can
own.
I
have been using a microphone holder for many years, which
is based on the classic Johnny Paul design. I have adapted
it and added some great touches that result in making it
totally adjustable in every manner. I am just releasing
the holder through my online magic store and via my blog
site. It is available in a variety of colors and has a very
cool silk carrying pouch. I am already getting raves about
the effectiveness of the holder.
For
a very modest fee you can obtain the ultimate microphone
holder and be prepared when you plan to use it, and sometimes
more importantly when you don't! It is lightweight, sturdy,
fits any microphone and works perfectly. If you need one
then let me know, it could become one of your favorite purchases-even
if you own a $2000 headset!

7. Changing Client Perceptions- #303 - Kyle Peron
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kyle Peron
magic4u02@aol.com
http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com
http://www.kpmagicproducts.com
Ever
has a situation where the client is changing things on you
so often that you feel they don't respect you at all?
It
stinks when things happen like this. But it is a case where
the client or clients are making so many demands freely
without really seeing your value. Your value is the ability
to be a solutions provider to them. By doing so, they start
to listen to you and want to take your advice.
Too
many clients see us only as a product for which they are
buying. They do not see us as people who can immediately
and positively affect the outcome to their event. They forget
that we are entertainment professionals and have much more
experience putting on events then they have themselves.
It becomes our job to try and get them to change their perceptions
of us.
If
they can get to see us as a value to them, then things start
to change a lot. What I try to do is to get them talking
so that I can start "listening". As I listen,
I am engaged in what I hear as a problem for them that may
also be a problem for me. The more I listen, the more I
am tuned into hearing what problems they are faced with
and what solutions I can give to them to solve it.
Now
do we have to offer solutions that do not really benefit
us 100%? Of course not. However, being a solutions provider
gets them to change their perception of you and increases
your value to them. People of value tend to get treated
better.
So
how do you treat or handle a client who keeps changing things
on you throughout the entire booking process? We start by
listening to them first and locking in on what 1) you see
as a problem for yourself and 2) what the problem may be
for them. It also comes with a bit of careful client education
but done in a way that is not coming off as demeaning or
degrading.
For
example they might be changing things and your show run
times because of timing issues or scheduling issues. This
is when you can ask them, "It seems like you might
be having timing or scheduling issues. I know how that can
be when trying to plan an event like yours and wanting it
to be a huge success. Perhaps I can help you as I have done
events like this for years." This is kind and gentle
but gets them talking and listening to you. it is at this
point you can ask them what seems to be the biggest hurdle
they are facing. You then can offer a solution that works
best for them. In most cases, your solution works ideal
because it is something that may not have even considered.
Once
you get them talking openly to you, then it becomes both
parties working together as a team for the interest of each
other as a whole. You both talk together to work solutions
that benefit you both and not just the client.
So
what happens if you were scheduled to do multiple shows
in the same location and it ends up being that they want
these shows to now be like 5 mins each due to timing problems?
Well talking with them, you can find out what the timing
and schedule problem is. Perhaps a solution is to do one
large show at the beginning or end of their event making
it easier for them to not have to shuffle people around.
Perhaps you then offer to do strolling style magic instead
of multiple shows because it may help them with a spacing
problem that they have. By listening and offering solutions
that can help them, you are getting them to see you in a
different way.
When
the client realizes you are a nice guy who is more than
just a mere product, they will see the value you can have
to THEIR end result.
As
always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your
thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or
suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly
at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you.

9. Flooding In Calgary Alberta

Message by Brent Smith
Many
have been asking about us in regards to the recent flooding
in Calgary Alberta. The shop is located about 5 minutes
from the flooded zone and the main river going through town.
We are up on higher ground so the flooding, although has
impacted our family directly, has not come near the store
front yet. Thanks for all those concerned.

Message by Greg Britt (Elgregoe) New Zealand
This
is Greg Britt (Elgregoe) New Zealand, we are taking a break
from our busy schedule of school shows and returning to
join kid show and family performers from around the world
at the amazing Kidabra International conference August 6th
to 9th in Pigeon Forge, USA.
It
is a non-stop flow of presentations and performances from
many of the best in the business.
You
pick up the real tips on Kids Biz that no one has told you
and come away with a wealth of new material to drop straight
into your shows.
I
will be doing 2 lectures, one on getting those repeat bookings,
as most of our work is now repeat work I believe we have
a formula that works!
Also
a lecture dedicated to my mentor from Australia the late
Clifford Warne, How To Hold An Audience Without A Rope!
Clifford
gave me so many routines and taught me so much about how
to hook and hold your audience. Clifford was a very giving
person who was always there to help and advice magicians,
now I will pass some of the advice and routines he helped
us with that makes your magic connect.
I
will share stories, magic and Vent that hold your audience.
Clifford
Warne was one of the world's most televised family magicians.
I
look forward to meeting and making new friends at Kidabra.

Message by Paul A. Lelekis (US)
Paul
A. Lelekis has just placed his latest e-book, "Assemblies
& 4-Ace Tricks" for sale at Lybrary.com with 13
huge effects by Paul and his "take" on many classic
of magic by people like Marlo, Hamman, Christ, Collins,
Parker and others! This e-book is a monster...each and every
effect is a winner! This e-book is only $12.00!
Have
ever performed and felt a little bit embarrassed when you
continually ask, "...here, pick a card, any card..."?
These 13 effects are real show-pieces that don't ask the
spectator to pick a card! The couple of tricks that do ask
for a selection are secondary to the main effect and will
not be remembered as a "pick a card" trick. These
are very engaging, colorful effects with complete patter!
