Israeli Magician and Psychic Was CIA Spy, Says New Documentary
Uri Geller Used His 'Powers' Against Russia During Cold War
The Israeli magician and psychic Uri Geller worked as a CIA spy, according to a new documentary.

"The Secret Life of Uri Geller-Psychic Spy," by Vikram Jayanti, says Geller used his powers against Russia, including erasing Soviet floppy discs and changing the mind of an unnamed Russian leader in order to convince him to sign a nuclear arms reduction treaty, The Independent reported.

Geller admits in the film that his CIA handlers asked him to use telepathy to stop a pig's heart from beating, but he refused out of concern that he would be asked to do the same to a human, according to reports.

"When Jimmy Carter was elected President, one of the first things he did was to have Uri Geller give him a four-hour briefing on the Soviet psychic threat," Jayanti told the Independent.

Message by Scott Wells A.I.M.C. with Silver Star (US)

During my recent week of performing at Hollywood's Magic Castle in the Close-Up Gallery, I had a chance to visit with many friends in and around the Castle. I took a short drive to nearby Glendale to get my hair cut by Dean Dill who talked about the creation of his Dean's Box plus his association with the former King of Late Night TV, Johnny Carson. He also gave me some great card handling advice, too. I traveled to Venice to have martinis and lunch with Chris Korn then dropped by his apartment to chat with his house guest, Paul Vigil.

Back at the Castle, I chatted with Mark Wilson and Nani Darnell about the magic classes they teach at the Castle plus some fun stories about their first trip to China so many years ago. And speaking of fun stories, Howard Hamburg gave us some delightful tales about the Professor (Dai Vernon), Larry Jennings and Tony Giorgio. I had some other nice conversations with Jack Goldfinger, Doc Eason, Paul Green, Shoot Ogawa and others including my buddy from the Magic Newswire days, Cameron Ramsay.

All of this plus photos are available now at: http://themagicwordpodcast.com or you can go directly to the podcast at: http://themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/2013/6/14/my-week-at-hollywoods-famed-magic-castle

6. Remarkable Magic #306 - Nick Lewin

Message by Nick Lewin (US)

There is showing, and then there is over showing!

I thought I would write a column about the very simple and important topic of 'showing things' during a magic show, because it is really rather an important area. It is also a thing that needs to be done right, if they can't see it then they won't like it. However as the article progresses we will look at what exactly is too much when it comes to this topic.

One of the ground rules of a successful magic show is everybody getting to see what is happening and when it has happened. The key part here is to make sure that there is enough light that the item you are displaying can be seen. This sounds obvious but does need a little pre-thought. Displaying something in the dark doesn't count.

When you are exhibiting something in a cabaret style setting or at an after dinner show, there are often strangely placed shafts of light from above that can really assist you in your goal. Those beams of light (which don't turn off) that do so little to add atmosphere in a show, can be invaluable if you want to let the audience really see something clearly. Make sure you use them.

Other important factors in clearly displaying an item to your audience is how high in the air you hold it, what color is behind it and whether you really concentrate on the object as you display it. Always remember that the audience's eyes follow what the performer is looking at.

If you are in a position where your viewers might not be able to clearly make out what is being displayed then feel free to describe exactly what they should be seeing. The old McComb theory of - "Tell them what you are going to do, when you are doing it and when it is done."

That was a few words about 'showing' something, and for me the dead easy definition of showing something is 'making sure it is seen'. Let's move on to another aspect of this same topic - 'over showing'.

I have seen many performers (including some rather famous ones) get so caught up in the physical process of showing an object that the action of displaying it becomes a major part of the routine. Sometimes this is at the expense of taking the focus from the object that is involved in the action. Once a performer gets happy with his actions then he tends not to change them - even if they are wrong.

The correct way to display something for your viewer's attention is to do it simply and clearly with the very minimum of unnecessary movements and actions. Your goal is to show something and not to draw attention to yourself showing it. Ken Brooke used to insist that I 'got' the weight and feel of every object I performed with and if at all possible to toss it smartly in the air and catch it. Nothing makes a glass look empty like spinning it hand-to-hand in mid-air.

With manipulative magic, the too slow set up of an effect is often due to the performers consideration of his 'character' and how he might react. Hmm, maybe a short magic act needs to be equally driven by impact and character. Could you tighten up the preamble and add an extra trick to the show? Wouldn't that be just as effective in making your character an integral part of the show?

Illusionists often seem to me to spend a great deal too much time displaying items whose significance has already been grasped by their viewers. There is a certain amount of 'prop rapping' and 'blade banging' that needs to be done when presenting an illusion, however I have seen the process of displaying the props take up so much time that they actually weaken the effect by making the running time longer than it truly needs to be.

With illusionists there is also the more subtle business of choreography to consider. Now I have no problem with an elegant choreography that keeps things moving at a brisk pace, but I certainly see plenty of half-assed choreography that just detracts from the show by slowing it down.

Maybe you don't need that bit of business when you pick up each sword individually, run your finger down the blade, throw it in the air, catch it, twist and turn before thrusting it into the box. A lot depends on how many damn swords there are!

The journey between artistic and boring can be a mighty small one to lay audiences.

7. Festivals and Event Promotion - #302 - Kyle Peron

Message by Kyle Peron

Event promotion is simply the art of being able to get folks knowing about your shows and your appearance at the festival. Never assume the festival is going to do all of it for you or that it will be effective. There are a few things you can do before the festival date and also several you can do when you are at the festival to promote yourself effectively.

First you will want to be able to tell your festival client that you have a promotional packet that may make it easier for them to promote your appearance at their event. Some of what I include in mine are as follows:

- 8 by 10 photos (these can be electronic files or hard copies that can be mailed)
- photos set up for usage on their website
- a short write up about my show that can be used in promotions, posters or in their event program guide
- logo files in black and white as well as color
- a full bio if they want to use that for a press release etc.
- my contact information as well as website URL so that it can be placed on their festival website
- plus anything else that can be of help to them.

The idea here is to make it as easy for them to promote me as possible. Not only making it easier for them, but I ensure that they are branding me the right way and the way I want to be marketed.

It never hurts to ask them how they will advertise the festival and get them talking with you. This way you have a better idea of what you can provide to them to help them out. This helps build the relationship between you and your festival client and gives you more perceived value in their eyes.

When doing festivals, the vendors can be your very best friend. Never ignore them or you are missing out on something that can be very rewarding to you and your success.

During my shows and before my shows, I make announcements and talk about the vendors that are all near me. I mention them by name and tell people to go and see these vendors and then stop by and watch a free magic show for the entire family.

In this process of doing this you cannot believe how many vendors will come over to personally thank me for doing that for them. I certainly did not have to do that and they all thank me time and again for taking the time to help them out as well. This takes no effort on my part other than being aware of the vendors and being willing to talk about them before and during my shows.

This does several things for me:
- I make really great friends with the vendors around me. This makes it easier for me later on when I needed to move my car in for loading and unloading or have an issue or need to borrow something I may have forgotten. People become much more helpful and do not mind helping because they know me. It is their way of saying thank you.

- It allows me to really get the chance to talk to these people and network. From just doing this, I meet numerous vendors and get e-mails from all of them. We share each others festival and contact list information. This is a HUGE benefit as a lot of these people work the festival circuit as well and they have inside information that can be very valuable.

- One of the other great benefits is the fact that I make friends with several of the food vendors. This was key as it gets awfully hot during the festival season and I often times get offered free drinks, fries, smoothies and even bags of kettle popcorn. All of these things have been offered to me for FREE just because I was kind enough to think of them and help them generate traffic.

SOOOO the bottom line is to realize the importance of getting to know your vendors near you when at any festival event. You can gain so much useful information and it really can benefit you in numerous ways such as I mentioned above.

As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you.

(An ongoing series with Special Guests)

At the beginning of this series, I mentioned that I would be including thoughts and musings from various guests who have kindly shared their perspectives. To date, we have had Jason Andrews, Paul Draper, Yvonne Montijo, Ray Parker, and Victoria Skye. This week, I am enthused and delighted to welcome Dan Garrett.

Dan Garrett is a Past President of The Society of American Magicians and has appeared on the covers of The Linking Ring and M-U-M. He has been featured in several magic publications, performed at The White House and has several accolades to his credit. Inventor & Performer, his name has been synonymous with good Magical Entertainment for several decades.

He is highly respected within the Industry and is regarded as one of the greats by several of the World's Leading Magicians, including David Copperfield. I am indeed fortunate to call Dan Garrett a dear friend and have spent quality time with him over the years. At one time, I even had the honor to work alongside him as the co-Host of World Class Magic. Naturally, when I began this series I had to invite him as a guest to contribute his thoughts on the topic. He kindly obliged.

On an aside note, I absolutely urge you to visit his website and take some time to peruse some of his effects. In case you may wonder if this is an unashamed biased plug, it is; once you have looked at the items you will, not only wholeheartedly agree with me but also be pleased I gave you a heads-up.

MAGIC - Art, Craft or Neither

This question even now is being debated online, in magic newsgroups and in the social media. It is a debate that continues unabated through many generations. However, I think the answer is clear to anyone willing to look for it.

The workbook for Max Howard's workshop Performance Skills for Magicians is used by magicians who are fortunate enough to attend one of his intensive 4-hour sessions. The most recent workshop given by Max was an extra-charge event held at the 2012 S.E.A.M. Convention in Atlanta, GA.

Here are a couple of brief excerpts:

"The theatre is built on craft. It cannot exist without craftsmen. Writing the script, acting the play, designing and creating the scenery, lighting, costumes, makeup, all of it requires craftsmanship." - Max Howard

And now for my two cents:
"The performance of magic is built on craft. It cannot exist without craftsmen. Writing the patter, mastering the sleights, creating the context of the performance using other theatrical crafts such as acting, scenery, costumes, makeup and character development, all combine to create an artistic performance of magic.
This artistic performance should ideally not only amaze the mind, but affect the human heart (emotions) and reveal something of the human condition." - Dan Garrett's interpretation

I think I threw in a few bucks by mistake.

Clearly from this, magic is a craft. Magic can also be an art. All magic is craft, but not all magic is art. These statements are purely the application of proposition calculus; in other words, logic.

Max Howard says, "Art requires two elements: Craftsmanship and Passion." This is the definition I choose to use for describing magic in terms of "craft" and "art." Max Howard is a classically-trained actor and professional magician, who was the very first magician to win an Emmy Award for his magic. He is also a professional speaker and trainer of speakers. Max and his partner Diane Bray have written and star in a play about magic called "The War Wizard." In this play Max recreates a fictional account of a very real person, William August Reich. Reich, a post-Civil War magician, was known as Professor Gus Rich, Wizard of the Blue Ridge.

There are also two great references by my good friend and mentor Dr. Charles J. Pecor. The first is The Craft of Magic published by Prentiss-Hall. It is out of print, but maybe you can still find it… somewhere. The second is called Staging Magic: The REAL Secrets. This title is also out of print, but still readily available from me from my web site dangarrettmagic.com (just click on the link "For Magicians Only" and scroll down to find it.)

Charlie Pecor's credentials include a PhD in Theater. His doctor's dissertation is a fine reference of magic history, which was published by Emerson and West. Dr. Pecor directed me in a significant number of drama and comedy plays when I attended Georgia Tech. He also introduced me to some other people who changed my life, such as Duke Stern, Doty?, Tom Mullica and John Miller.

13. Wayne Houchin's First Australian Lecture
--------------------------------------------
Message by Garry

Monday June 24, 2013

Hey Presto Magic in conjunction with the Geniis are proud to present Wayne Houchin's first Australian lecture.

Genii Magazine calls Wayne Houchin, "One of the hottest magicians on the planet!" He has released some of the most popular magic effects in the past decade, headlined at the world-famous Magic Castle in Hollywood and Le Double Fond in Paris, and is the star of the Discovery Channel's Breaking Magic (AKA Magic of Science.) He has astonished audiences in more than 30 countries and he co-founded the popular website Theory11.

During his 90 minute lecture, Wayne Houchin presents an exploration of close-up, parlor and shock magic. In addition to covering several of his popular marketed effects including The Signed Coin in Can and Stigmata, Houchin presents brand new, unreleased magic. A wide variety of material is discussed including magic using string, coins, soda, photographs, lighters and more.
Here is a short demo video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xMmizIJST-M

"A world class entertainer who shares himself entirely with the audience. A must see for anybody who loves magic!" - SOMA, 2009 FISM Grand Prix Winner
"Wayne Houchin's lecture was one of the best we've had in years. His magic is fantastic, visual and amazing. But if you watch him and pay close attention, you might learn something far more important than tricks: How to connect with an audience, draw them into an experience and make them care." - Harry Lucas, Magic Circle Vienna

"Wayne Houchin is this generation's Houdini! One of the best lectures we've ever had." - Wizardz Magic Theater, Orlando
"Wayne Houchin is brilliant!" - Criss Angel, Mindfreak
"Wayne Houchin was incredible during his sold out, standing room only lecture! We enjoyed having him very much!" - Tannen's Magic, NY
"A cross between a con-man & a street magician, a fascinating live performer!" - Synthesis Magazine
"Houchin's lecture was excellent and one I highly recommend to any magician as a MUST SEE!" - Marc DeSouza
"Wayne Houchin's lecture depressed me. He's just a kid--half my age--and he's extremely talented. Aside from the insights into both conceiving and implementing great effects, Wayne knows what it takes to perform them. It's no wonder he has such a vast and devoted following (he packed Midwest Magic's lecture room--and many were faces I had never seen before.) I would most highly recommend Wayne's lecture to any group that appreciates talent and the rare combination of both ingenious creator and exceptional performer. It is not to be missed!" - Tim Felix, Midwest Magic

Convention Registration begins at 8:30AM with the Dealers/Flea Market Room doors opening at 9:00AM. The first lecture starts at 9:30AM. For a full schedule, go to our website - "Convention" link for additional information: http://tampamagicclub.com/

The convention will once again be held at the beautiful Embassy Suites hotel, 3705 Spectrum Blvd., Tampa, FL. If you need a room, call Melissa Spanola as she has a special rate of $129 per night. This rate is not available through the hotel registration number.

There will be a large Dealers Room, packed with Great Dealers from all over Florida. We will again have Flea Market tables in the Dealers Room that will be loaded with lots of outstanding magical treasurers. There will surely be something for everyone. If you would like to have a Flea Market table, while they last, call Ken Spanola, 813-885-2449. A flea market table is only $10 for paid convention registrants.

So as soon as you finish reading this:
Call Melissa Spanola at 813-885-2449 to make your Convention Registration
If you need a Flea Market table or would like to be a Dealer, call Ken Spanola at 813-885-2449. He'll even take your Convention Registration at the same time.
