It Will Be A Magical Day On The Boulevard When Penn & Teller Are Honored With Star On The Hollywood Walk Of Fame

Emcee: Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, President/CEO Leron Gubler
Guest speakers: David Copperfield, Trey Parker and Matt Stone
What: 2,494th Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in the Category of Live Performance
Where: 7003 Hollywood Boulevard not far from the historic The Magic Castle
When: Friday, April 5, 2013 at 11:30 a.m.

Star ceremony will be live streamed on www.walkoffame.com

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce is prepping for a magical day on the Walk of Fame when magicians Penn & Teller will be honored with the 2,494th star on the famed Walk of Fame. “We selected the perfect spot for the star,” stated Ana Martinez, Walk of Fame Producer. “It will be unveiled at 7003 Hollywood Boulevard just steps away from the star of legendary Houdini and right down the street from the historic The Magic Castle!”

The Magic Castle, which is celebrating its 50th Anniversary this year, will be honoring Penn & Teller the following day on Saturday, April 6th with the coveted "Magicians of the Year" Award.

Gubler and guest speakers David Copperfield, Trey Parker and Matt Stone will help the duo Penn & Teller unveil the 2,494th Star in the Category of Live Performance at 7003 Hollywood Boulevard down the street from the historic The Magic Castle.

“Fans can watch the thrill LIVE on www.walkoffame.com!” said Martinez.

For more than 35 years, Penn & Teller have defied labels- and at times physics and good taste-- by redefining the genre of magic and inventing their own distinct niche in comedy.

The duo have been performing together since the late 1970s. With sold-out runs on Broadway, world tours, Emmy-winning TV specials, and hundreds of outrageous appearances on everything from Letterman to Leno, Friends to The Simpsons, Chelsea Lately to Top Chef, This comedy team show no signs of slowing down.

With an amazing six wins, as “Las Vegas Magicians of the Year,” Penn & Teller’s 10-year run at The Rio All-Suite Las Vegas Hotel & Casino makes them one of the longest-running and most-beloved shows in Las Vegas history, outselling every other resident magician on the Strip.

Their acclaimed Showtime series, “Penn & Teller: BS!” was nominated for 13 Emmys and is the longest-running series in the history of the network. The show tackled the fakes and frauds behind such topics as alien abduction, psychics, and bottled water. Their newest television venture, “Penn & Teller Tell A Lie” for the Discovery Channel premiered in October 2012. Penn is currently showing his business-savvy on the new season of NBC’s “Celebrity Apprentice.”

In the UK, Penn & Teller have recently completed the first series of their highly-lauded return to British television, “Penn & Teller: Fool Us!” The show is about up-and-comers and magic veterans who try to fool Penn & Teller for a chance to star in the duo’s hit Las Vegas show.

Along the way, Penn & Teller have written three New York Times best-sellers; hosted their own Emmy-nominated variety show for FX; starred in their own Emmy-winning specials for ABC, NBC and Comedy Central; and produced the critically-lauded feature film documentary The Aristocrats.

As individuals, they are just as prolific! Teller directed a version of Macbeth which toured the east coast to raves from the New York Times and Wall Street Journal. He has also written two books. Penn has written three books, including the 2011 New York Times best-seller, “God No!” hosted the NBC game show Identity, and donned his ballroom shoes for the 2008 season of ABC’s Dancing With The Stars.

With such inclusions as in the New York Times Crossword Puzzle, as answers on Jeopardy and Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, Penn & Teller have sealed their status as cultural icons and the preeminent duo in the history of comedy. Their well-deserved acclaim was once again reinforced when singer Katy Perry asked them to co-star in the video for her No. 1 song, “Waking Up in Vegas.”

4. Derren Brown - Infamous - An Initial Review
--------------------------------------------
Message by Crag Mitchell (South Africa)

“Infamous” is the title of Derren Brown’s much awaited new live stage show that opened in the dreary town of Dartford, England on Fri 15th March. Currently in previews - the show will soon be touring the hills of merry old Britain - before settling in for a likely West End run in 2014.

There has been great buzz surrounding the return of Andy Nyman to the creative team. Having collaborated on much of Derren’s early material, the show was somewhat of a triumphant reunion for the two performers ... and the promise of more ground-breaking material with Nyman in the role of Director and co-writer.

For those wanting all the details on this initial performance - a full review is available online at http://thoughtsontheworld2013.blogspot.com/

5. Remarkable Magic #294 - Nick Lewin

Message by Nick Lewin (US)

A midnight visit to David Copperfield’s lair. Part One.

I had a wonderful opportunity a few years ago to visit David Copperfield’s warehouse/office/museum complex in Las Vegas. It was a delightful experience and one that I will long treasure, and I want to share some aspects of it in this column. There were also a couple of neat surprises included that I won’t spoil, in case you get the chance to do the tour yourself.

I was spending the evening in the company of my old buddy Mike Weatherford who is the reviewer and entertainment columnist for the Las Vegas Review Journal. The evening started on a high note when we attended a concert at the Planet Hollywood Performing Arts Centre. The show featured Bob Dylan and Merle Haggard in concert and both of these legendary performers were at the top of their game. Not much gets better than that for me.......

We were set to meet David at exactly midnight in the entrance to his impressive facility in the industrial section of Las Vegas, which runs parallel to the infinitely more glitzy Las Vegas strip. In a golden afterglow from a near perfect concert, Mike and I joined a small group for the tour. It was clear from the start that this was going to be a very carefully conducted and constructed experience.

When we arrived inside the building we were seated in front of a spectacularly large ‘big screen’ TV and watched a short film about the singular career and achievements of Mr Copperfield. I knew the details about most of what I saw on the screen, but it was still highly impressive to see the information gathered in one presentation. After the video had finished David arrived in person and began the actual tour.

Let me say immediately, that if you wanted a lesson in charm and grace then you need look no further than the way David handled the tour. He made it personal and friendly and although you realized intellectually that he must have done hundreds of similar tours it didn’t feel that way for a single minute. He had performed at least two shows that day at the Hollywood Theatre at the MGM Grand, however you would never have guessed it by his energy level.

The largest element of the facilities contents were the stacks of travel cases containing the illusions that have been featured in David’s television and live performance career. To a performer like myself, it was astounding just to imagine the contents of the neatly stacked cases. It was so amazingly tidy and immaculately lined up that I suspect if one item had been out of place it would have been noticeable. I felt just a little guilty about the haphazard manner in which my tiny collection of props were stored.

The library and museum sections of the tour were as fascinating as anything I’ve ever witnessed in the magic world. Though Norm and Lupe Nielsen’s home and art gallery deserves a special shout out. Copperfield’s collection of posters and books was mind blowing and to a book freak like myself called out for a full exploration--which needless to say was not forthcoming. David commented that he owned half of Houdini’s library and you really don’t want anyone thumbing through that kind of memorabilia! I half-jokingly asked David why he just owned half of the Houdini collection, I believe I noted just a hint of chagrin in his response that the Library of Congress owned the rest!

The magic props on display were fascinating, especially intriguing were the collection of automatons - many of which dated back to Robert Houdin. There were many items that I was only familiar with from books and was not aware that they still existed in person. The magic props were arranged in artistic tableaus based around various themes. There were items of huge historical interest and some of intensely personal meaning to David. I particularly loved the collection of magic sets that occupied one display area.

One of the exhibitions was devoted to magical memorabilia connected to the late Orson Welles. It was apparent that Mr Welles had a special place in David’s heart as he had been the host of his very first television special. Next week I will tell you about a neat way that I was able to make my own mark on this remarkable collection and the Orson Welles segment in particular.

I have some great products and videos online. Check them out on my web site. www.nicklewin.com

6. Starting Cold - #293 - Kyle Peron

Over the years my wife and I have developed terms and phrases that we use to sum up situations at events. It is these codes that help us communicate important information without saying something that could be perceived wrong by the client. One such set of terms is the phrase "Starting Cold vs Starting Hot."

What we mean is that every event is different and you will always face different challenges based upon situations you find yourself in. As much as we like to be prepared for everything, you just never know how much you are going to be forced to adapt at any given time.

Starting cold or hot refers simply to the interaction you have with the audience prior to the show starting itself. If you start cold, it means to us that we have little to no interaction with the audience prior to the show starting. If we start hot, it means we have had a chance to interact in some way with the audience before the show starts.

Why is this important? I feel it is important because it really does effect the show and how you handle it. If you are forced to start cold, it simply means you may have to work a little harder in the beginning to 'warm up" the audience and to get them to know who you are and what you are about. Starting cold tends to make the audience evaluate you more in the beginning of the show to get a feel for you.

If you are starting cold, you may not want to just race right into the show or to an audience participation effect too early on. You need to establish yourself to them and then go into that type of a routine once that has happened.

So you can see that starting cold can certainly work and in many cases we are forced to. You just need to be aware that the show may need to be adapted to account for this.

If I have an option, I would much rather start the show hot. By doing so, I feel I do not have to work as hard because the audience is already warmed up to me. They have already interacted with me earlier and in so doing, have a sense for what I am about and the type of experience they may be seeing.

When I start hot, the audience is usually much more responsive early on in the show and this tends to lead to a much better audience interaction and reaction.

So how does one start hot? Well for me, there are many ways in which I can do this and a lot or very simple. It just requires you to be willing to extend yourself and make yourself available.

For example, get to an event early so you are not forced to rush. When I get to any gig, I always meet the client/s, shake their hands and show a deep interest in them. If we are celebrating a child or honoring a person, I will always greet them and show interest in them and their special day. It seems simple and it is. But doing this gets you interacting early. They get to see who you are and what you are like and start to get comfortable with you.

If you are done setting up, why not go around and just talk with folks and show a sincere interest in them. By doing so, it shows the folks you are accessible and friendly. If you get a chance to (and it is appropriate) do some close up or strolling magic for folks. Now even if you are not getting paid for it, this makes a HUGE difference. It does not mean you have to do it for a long period of time. It means seeing an opportunity to connect.

When I do things like this, it also helps me a great deal when it comes time for the show. I can scope the audience out as I am interacting. I can sense who might be a great helper or who I may want to avoid for one reason or another. I get a sense for who is outgoing and can realize they may be perfect for certain routines.

I also always ask their names. This is a HUGE thing I learned in business. When you network, make it a habit to ask for a name and remember it. People tend to feel much more at ease when you call them by name. It is a show of respect but it also says that you are a friend. It lets the audience know that you are connected to them.

When selecting a helper, if I am starting hot, then I can select the helper by calling out their first name and bringing them up that way. Usually it gets a much better reaction then saying, "um how about the guy in the red shirt in the second row." Business folks know the importance of learning names and the power it creates.

One example of how this entire theory works happened just a few weeks ago. I was asked to do a gig for a Lion's Club kid's night. When I got there I could easily see a huge age range of people. You had young kids, preteens, teenagers, adults and seniors. When walking in I could sense a feeling that the adults felt the show was just for the kids and the teens seemed to have a look on their face as if thinking that magic would be too childish for them.

This is where a starting hot principle kicks in. I knew that I needed to get out there and warm the audience up prior to the show start. I first talked to the client and then to the board members. Just shaking hands and showing an interest in them. Already I could see a change in perception. I then started to do some simple strolling magic for the younger kids. By doing so, I peeked the teen’s interest and drew them over. The adults could see what I was doing had skill and everyone seemed to just lighten up, relax and realize better who I am.

When the show started, it started hot. I already knew names, already had a report with the crowd and had a good idea of who I was selecting. It literally changed a possible average show into an amazing show experience.

As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you.

7. Broken Wand - Alexander Adrion
--------------------------------------------
Message by John Wade (UK)

Alexander Adrion who died in February in Cologne, Germany, at the age of 89 originally studied philosophy and psychology but turned pro magician in 1950. His full evening show of what he called Chamber Magic or Drawing Room Magic was highly regarded in Germany and in the tradition of Hofzinser, Robert-Houdin and Fredo Marvelli, playing in smaller theatres and salons.

He wrote seven books and many articles about magic and magical history for the general public and became known in the intellectual German press as a magician-philosopher and magician-poet. Although never a star in the modern sense he was highly regarded as a serious artist, no small achievement for a magician in Germany.

Annual Magic Show Features Chicago’s Best Magicians

Tinley Park, IL, March, 16, 2012 - The Magic Masters Magic Club will present its 68th Annual Magic Show and Banquet on Friday, April 19th in Hickory Hills, Illinois at the Lexington House banquet hall. The event will feature some of the Chicago area’s best magicians.

Audience members will be treated to a full evening of magic including close up table-side magic, an intimate parlor magic show performed before dinner, and a professional stage show after dinner. Tickets are only $30 each which includes a full dinner served family style. This family-friendly event begins at 6:30pm with dinner served at 7:30pm.

“We are really looking forward to our annual magic show and banquet this year,” said current club president Don Wiberg. “We have four of Chicago’s best magicians lined up to perform and it promises to be one our best shows ever.”

According to Wiberg, the Magic Masters of Chicago, a Tinley Park based magic club, has been putting on its annual show and banquet for more than 68 years, and is the longest running event in the Chicago magic community. The annual event has a reputation for showcasing outstanding magic talent.

“There is a lot of great magic talent in the Chicago area,” explained Wiberg, “but we have worked hard to select only the best magicians who would give our annual show both great variety and great talent. I am very happy with this year’s lineup and I know our audience will be happy too.”

Wiberg stressed that all the magicians performing have years of experience. Wiberg himself, who will be performing as the show’s Master of Ceremonies, has been performing magic for more than 63 years. Wiberg has been a member of the International Brotherhood of Magicians since 1953, and served as the organization’s International President from 1984-1985.

Opening the show will be “Circus Boy” Bobby Hunt. Hunt has more than 25 years of experience astonishing audiences with his unforgettable brand of stunts and physical comedy. Hunt has appeared onstage with such high profile acts as Weird Al Yankovic, The Beach Boys and Billy Ray Cyrus. Hunt’s unique talents were showcased on an episode of television’s “Ripley’s Believe It Or Not,” and he was also a featured performer with the world famous Ringling Brothers Circus.

Performing next will be award winning magician, Trent James. James, who is only 16, has won numerous awards including first place in Stage Magic at both the Texas Association of Magicians, 2012 and the International Battle of Magicians, 2012. James has also won first place and People’s Choice at the Abbott’s Magic Get Together, 2011. This past year, James was one of the few youth performers chosen to present his act at both the International Brotherhood of Magicians and Society of American Magicians annual conventions.

The evening’s next performer will be Tim Hannig who loves using laughter, magic and music to entertain and inspire. Hannig has performed in Canada, England, and all across the United States, including performances for Six Flags, the Chicago White Sox and twice at the White House

Hannig won both first place and the People’s Choice Award in the Chicago Magic Competition, 2012. One of the competition judges was Chris Jones, chief theater critic for the Chicago Tribune, who declared, “Bravo! With formidable skills, charm and warmth, Tim really is amazing.”

Closing out the show will be Tim and Robin Balster. The Balsters’ act features an awesome array of magic, stage illusions and comedy all skillfully woven together with up-beat music, special effects and dance. True professionals, the Balsters have performed all over the world including the countries of Korea, Japan, Canada, Mexico and the Bahamas. In addition, the Balsters have performed in 41 states including Alaska and Hawaii.

The Balsters are currently touring coast to coast performing at performance arts centers and theaters with their productions: Duck Soup, Sheer Magic, The Plan Ahead Magic Show and their latest production, The Wizard’s Apprentice. The Balsters love performing for family audiences.

“Our philosophy has always been to entertain the audience, instead of just fooling them,” explained Tim Balster. “We enjoy the challenge of entertaining on different levels at the same time. Getting a response from every age demographic and often for different reasons within the same trick, takes a lot of planning and when you pull it off it’s such a thrill!”

The Illusionists:

* The Escapologist aka Andrew Basso - Death defying escapes
* The Gentleman aka Mark Kalin - Classic magic reimagined
* The Inventor aka Kevin James - Magic inventions and ground breaking illusions
* The Mentalist aka Philip Escoffey - Master of the unexplained
* The Trickster aka Jeff Hobson - Comedy magic. The biggest selling magic show on earth will appear on The Civic stage in May for a two week season featuring seven world grand master magicians in The Illusionists: Witness the Impossible.

The Illusionists: Witness the Impossible launched in January 2012 with a sell-out season at Sydney Opera House reaching an audience of 31,000 in nine days, followed by a Mexico City eight-day season with an audience of 42,000. More recently the show packed out Adelaide Festival Centre and Queensland Performing Arts Centre, and will visit Auckland before a launching world tour from London's West End.

The hand-picked cast of internationally renowned illusionists together create a blockbuster stage show featuring a stunning mix of their most outrageous and unbelievable optical illusions including nail-biting Russian roulette, jaw-dropping acts of levitation, mind-reading, disappearance and escapes.

This show sees the magicians take their cue from the showmanship of the great illusionists of the past - such as Houdini - and combine it with contemporary sets, costume design, technology and live band Z, best known as touring band for Hip Hop legend NaS, to create a spell-binding family-friendly blockbuster. Creative Producer Simon Painter says the show is a world first, with each of the seven international illusionists the best in their niche and together creating a 21st century stage spectacular that will leave audiences spellbound.

"From Dan Sperry's shock illusions to comedy magician Jeff Hobson to Escapologist Andrew Basso who performs the Houdini inspired underwater escape live on stage, there is no other group of magicians who can deliver the mind-blowing entertainment that The Illusionists do at every show.

"Kevin James, The Inventor, is the man who created most of the famous illusions and tricks that you'll see performed anywhere in the world by top magicians, and we have him bringing his favourite illusions to life as part of the show." Robbie Macrae, Director of THE EDGE Performing Arts Centre says that The Illusionists is a magic show like never before seen in New Zealand and another major stage show for Auckland and the rest of New Zealand to enjoy.

"We're incredibly excited to have secured The Illusionists for a season at The Civic.
We haven't had a blockbuster magic show of this kind in Auckland before and we know that the theatricality and artistry of the show will completely astonish our audiences."

12. The Magic Castle's Milt Larsen: Why Humans Need Magic
--------------------------------------------
Article forwarded on by Mel Kientz (US)

The Magic Castle is a private club with about 5,000 members, half of them magicians and half not.

Patt Morrison Asks . . .

When we first opened, we said let's have a club for magicians, and we immediately figured, who's gonna pay for it? So we have associate members who don't have to be even amateur magicians, just people who like magic, like entertaining their guests [here]. Then we have magician members who have to qualify and be able to perform or at least prove an interest in magic.

Your father and mother were magicians; your mother was "the Magic Lady" on KTLA TV for years, but that was unusual. Are there more women in magic now?

The 1920s, 1930s, and before that, there were very few lady magicians. The stereotype was white tie and tails, a suave person in a top hat, and the [female] assistant could only hand him props or appear in boxes. Now there are wonderful lady magicians sawing the guy in half! The whole world has changed; it's just natural that magic is no different. Ladies say, I can do that. I don't have to carry the props for that guy - I'll let him carry the props for me.

The castle began more than 100 years ago as Chateau Holly. You saved it and restored it, but in 2011 there was a fire - on Halloween. Ghosts?

A [roofer's] torch accidentally got knocked over. We'd had a whole week of Halloween. We called it "Inferno" - we always call it something - and it's second only to New Year's Eve for us.

Here's the spooky thing: Houdini passed away in Detroit on Oct. 31, 1926. The fire department was able to pinpoint the time the fire started and it was almost exactly the time Houdini died.

The other thing that's spooky: The fire started in the attic; there was a lot of damage to the attic and third floor. The main damage, the water damage, was the Dante Room, named after Dante the magician, who was a rival of Houdini's.

That room was completely destroyed. On the other side of the building, the Houdini Room, wasn't touched.

People say you're nostalgic. You play 78s on the radio; you co-wrote a musical about turn-of-the-century Broadway.

Nostalgia is the wrong word. Nostalgia (is) for something that happened that everybody remembers. We (he and his collaborator, Oscar-winning songwriter Richard M. Sherman) are doing a "period piece." There's a big difference.

"Hello, Dolly!" was a period piece; it wasn't nostalgia. Like the burning of Rome - you couldn't possibly have been there, but it's fun to look at people in togas.

Did Harry Potter change interest in magic?

Very much so. (It) was a very good influence on magic. (But) I don't think everybody went out with wizard hats and tried to make football games in the air.

Did you make J.K. Rowling a Magic Castle member?

She was in town for something and her publicity people rejected the idea.

From Houdini to Harry - it sounds as if you think humans need magic.

I have this wonderful book, it describes lighting a fire in an ancient temple with stone doors that 20 men could not move. You light a fire, and then the doors would open [on their own].

It's simple: The fire would cause hydraulic suction which would cause water to go into a retainer which would do a leverage thing which would open these huge doors. Just a magic trick.

Audiences want to experience the unbelievable. The magic illusions of today are often the scientific realities in the future.

In the meantime it's fun to be fooled. As long as there are people to be fooled, there will be magicians to fool them!
