You've probably been notified of this already, but in case you haven't, the missing magician, Stanley Jacobson, Jr., was found stabbed to death this past week in his apartment. The apartment had reportedly been checked weeks before without any luck in finding him, but this time he was there - dead! His "girlfriend" is being questioned as a person of interest.

4. Review Of John Kaplan's lecture In Auckland, New Zealand
---------------------------------------------
Message from Paul Romhany (NZ)

John Kaplan's lecture in Auckland really could have changed somebody's life. A good turnout from a variety of ages showed that his material appealed to every kind of performer. The lecture was in two parts. The first John performed and explained routines from his working repertoire including his huge hit release Killer Cut. An incredibly visual and mind boggling effect where a silk is placed in a piece of newspaper, both are cleanly cut and shown apart, then both restored.

John has the ability to take an old effect and really spend time working on it and creating something that is far superior. My other favorite was his Bogart Newspaper Tear. I had the opportunity to see John perform this routine in a live theatre show back in Canada and blow the audience away. He has taken one of the oldest tricks in magic, that you see everybody perform and give it such a novel presentation. It still played well in the lecture room and the magicians really loved it. John's effects are all commercial and work under any condition, perfect for New Zealand magicians.

The second part of his lecture was where the local guys really struck gold. John performs his 34th year when he gets back to Canada this week with his Fundraising Touring show. He has made an incredible full time living from doing tours raising money for every type of organisation and school you can imagine. There is nobody in the world I know in this business who has created a system like John has. He went into detail about how he puts together his tours and how he gets clients. Forget the 'percentage' idea most fundraising people think about, John has a sure fire way for him to get his money and the sponsor to make over $10,000 for one event!!

I've never seen anything like it and it was inspiring. I know several magicians purchased his course in which he goes into detail about everything he has worked on for the past 34 years and I hope these people put it in to practice.

Nobody in New Zealand is doing what John has done, and I can see a huge market for any perform, whether it be a magician, hypnotist, puppeteer, or musician with a show to take what John has done and apply it to the New Zealand market and made a huge amount of money working year round with his system.

The most amazing thing was the deal John offered those interested - a bargain that could change the life of any performer!! I hope those that purchased it really take the time and go through it and put it in to practice, and become successful with the fundraising tour. As I said, nobody in New Zealand is doing anything like this way he does.

John, thank you and Heather for coming our way and sharing your fun and knowledge with us all.

Remembering Hal Spear.

There was very sad news on the Internet yesterday about the passing of Hal Spear. Hal was a long time magician and comedian who was a creative and delightful force in both areas. Born in Livingston, New Jersey he was now living in Las Vegas, Nevada - like so many other magicians and comedians.

An avid magician from an early age, Hal was creative and persistent in his approach to magic. Ultimately he moved more into the comedy sphere than the magic world. However he never lost his interest in magic and brought his encyclopedic knowledge of comedy to bear on his first love.

As a comedy writer Spear wrote for such shows as, 'The Drew Carey Show,' The
Tonight Show,' 'The Arsenio Hall Show,' 'The Howie Mandel Show' and many others. He also wrote for comedians such as Rodney Dangerfield, Jay Leno, Howie Mandel, Rosie O'Donnell, Tim Allen and Rich Jeni. He was one funny guy.

As a performer Hall (Chickie to his friends) was seen on numerous TV shows and appeared in every kind of live venue. His comedy was always fresh and smart. He was a true comedian's comedian. However, he never forgot or abandoned his magical roots. The last full day I spent with Hal was in Victoria BC when we visited Murray Hatfield's magic store and had a delightful lunch with Murray and Eric Bedard.

You can share some of Hal's talents in three excellent releases he has recently made via Paul Romhany's online magic store. They are 'The Amazing Twenty Dollar Bill Trick.' 'CSI-The Case of the Half Died Hanky,' and his superb book of comedy routines 'Extreme Magic Makeover-Comedy Classics.' It is an education to see what a real comedy writer can do in routining magic. They are highly recommended. Check out details at www.halspear.com

It is amazing how many brilliant minds are fascinated by magic at an early age, and how often they retain that interest. Hal Spear was a true lover of magic and one of the most friendly and generous people you could hope to meet. He is the kind of person that magic needs more of. I don't claim to be one of Hal's closest friends but I wish I had of been, he enriched my life immensely by the contact we had.

If you want to watch Hal perform comedy then look him up on YouTube, where he is well represented, and settle back to laugh. The comedy and magic world are both smaller and less interesting places with his passing. I will miss him.

I have some great products and videos online. Check them out on my web site.

As most folks know...or maybe do not know....I am a deaf magician. I started losing my hearing at age 8 and it got worse as the years rolled on. I am now about 60-65% deaf in both ears. I lip read to understand what people say and I tend to feel music more than hear it.

There are many magicians out there who have various disabilities. I commend them for never giving up or giving in. Magic for me was a saving grace. It brought me out of my shyness and helped me to learn to communicate better and focus more. In a way magic was a healing art for me.

If you are reading this and have a disability (or know someone interested in magic that has one) I hope that it inspires you to go out there and get involved in the art. We do not have to stop doing what we love simply because it may be harder for us. What we must do is have a desire to go above and beyond and push ourselves to simply adapt.

Magic and performing magic was a challenge for me and still is in some degrees. That does not mean I have to stop doing it. It does not mean I have to settle for second best. If the desire is there, work hard to come up with a means in which to accomplish what you want to accomplish. There is always a way to make it work for you.

Although I can't hear music well at all, I adapted my sound system so I can feel the vibrations from the speaker hitting my leg or through my shoes. This gives me a means in which to stay on cue. I could have easily given up and told myself music is something I can't use or do. But having a disability does not mean I have to settle for anything less than anyone else.

Sure it may be harder and sure it may take longer. However, working hard is something everyone does who has a passion for the art.

I never say any of this for folks to feel sorry for me. I do not feel sorry for myself. For you see, to me this is a gift. Although I cannot hear the world like you all can, I can SEE the world in ways others simply can't. It makes me love the art of magic even more. It makes me realize that through my magic I can make a person smile or laugh. Isn't that the greatest form of magic there is?

My disability has given me the chance to share magic and a powerful message with audiences I perform for. Through this wonderful art, I can let audiences know about deaf culture. I can share the message of overcoming hurdles people face in life. I can share a strong anti-bullying message with students because I have lived it first-hand.

I write this article as a way of reaching out to you all of us are faced with hardships in life. Some of us though a physical disability and others simply through the roadblocks of life. Never let these stop your pursuit of learning and performing magic. It can heal you and can also heal your audiences in ways you never dreamed of.

As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you.

8. Magic - Art, Craft Or Neither - Part 3
--------------------------------------------
Message by Anthony Darkstone - USA/Europe

At the beginning of this series, I mentioned that I would be including thoughts and musings from various guests who have kindly shared their perspectives. This week I am delighted to continue to welcome Ivonne Perez Montijo

For just over 3 decades, has been active in Film & TV. She is a member of the Screen Actors Guild and has also written and produced independent short films and theatrical productions. Her "day job" has been as "Pinky the Clown", performing magic and entertaining young children all over Los Angeles. Ivonne has a B.A. in Spanish Literature with a minor in Theatre & Film from U.C.L.A. and a M.A. in Religious Studies from C.S.U.L.B.

She is currently studying music theory, piano, and guitar at Long Beach City College. Ivonne is first and foremost a writer and a story teller. She has written numerous poems over the years and her work can be found on :- www.ivonnemontijo.wordpress.com.

I have not read all her written work but from the writings that I have perused , it is indeed praiseworthy. Her conceptual thinking and phraseology are superb. I have publicly stated that some aspects of her work flow in a similar vein to Kahlil Gibran. She is also currently developing her thesis, "Mary Magdalene: Beloved Wife and Disciple of Jesus of Nazareth" into a book. I am eagerly looking forward to this as the topic has interested me for some 50 years. She also has a page dedicated to inspiring thoughts on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/ForTheLoveOfYou.April2012

For reasons that will become apparent as you read the following words, I am both deeply appreciative and delighted that she responded to my request to contribute to the topic. Of necessity, the Editor and I have chosen to publish it in installments over the next few weeks.

The Art of Magic - Part 3
By Ivonne Perez Montijo, M.A.

Mircea Eliade states, "For of course, the shaman is also a magician and medicine man; he is believed to cure, like all doctors, and to perform miracles of the fakir type, like all magicians, whether primitive or modern. In ancient Egypt and biblical days, the priests were magicians. Go back to Moses battling it out with the magicians of Pharaoh in his attempts to free the Hebrew slaves. In Exodus 8:7 it states, "But the magicians did the same by their secret arts and made frogs come up on the land of Egypt."

In Acts 8:9-13 we find the following, "But there was a man named Simon, who had previously practiced magic in the city and amazed the people of Samaria, saying that he himself was somebody great. They all paid attention to him, from the least to the greatest, saying, 'This man is the power of God that is called Great.' And they paid attention to him because for a long time he had amazed them with his magic."

Johnny Thompson, has stated that, "At one time we held a lot of power until they caught a guy switching bricks at the last second, a gold one for a real one, you know. But till then we were held in pretty high esteem now we have had to turn it into an art form instead of a religious form- End of Part 3

10. IBM British Ring Convention
--------------------------------------------
A message by Geoffrey Newton (UK)

The IBM British Ring convention organisers now have quite a list of artistes, lecturers and events planned for the 2013 get together being held in Buxton, Derbyshire, England from 4th - 8th September. The Opera house and the adjacent Pavilion Gardens will cater for most of the events so let's look at what is on offer. From the USA comes Skilldini, David Kaplan and Tim Wright, from Spain Eduardo Galeano and also many well-known UK performers.

The Jeffrey Atkins Memorial Lecture will be presented by Fergus Roy on the
Davenport Story whilst Steve Short interviews Ian Adair on his life in magic which I am sure will have plenty about the Supreme Magic Company in it. A tribute to the late Alan Shaxon will also be part of the convention programme.

The gala show will be compered by Vincent Hays MBE, well known to many of you for his many appearances at Brick Lane Music Hall in London.

Ricky McLeod will present the children's lecture, and 'Sooty's Magic Show' with Richard Cadell will be the children's show on the Saturday morning. Guest entertainers on this show will be announced soon.

There is to be a Gala of Youth with Ed Hilsum and Megan Knowles-Bacon being already scheduled to appear at the time I write this.

The ladies trip (whole day) to Chatsworth House is now nearly fully booked and promises to be a great day out.

Dealers booked so far include Practical Magic, Made to Measure Magic, Astra Magic, Peter Diamond, Master of Mystery - Adrian Sullivan, Qualatex Balloons - Graham Lee.

I'll keep you updated with more news as I receive it. Remember the members' convention rate is £125 up until the end of June then it goes up to £140. A very good reason to book now! Details are on www.magicconvention.co.uk

12. Bag Of Tricks Documentary
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kevin Spencer (US)
Executive Producer: Bag of Tricks Documentary

My name is Kevin Spencer. My childhood passion for magic turned into a 30-year career that has enabled me to create and perform one of the largest theatrical illusion touring shows in the world. I never believed I could achieve greater satisfaction than traveling the globe performing magic. but it turns out I was wrong.

Through my own personal tragedy and, more recently, my association with some extraordinary individuals, I've learned that mastering even the simplest magic trick can be one of the most satisfying and therapeutic activities one can do.

I've long been a believer in the power of the arts to positively impact the quality of people's lives. My commitment to that belief has taken me down some interesting paths. One of the most rewarding has been working with people who struggle daily with developmental and intellectual disabilities.

In 2010, I accepted an Adjunct Faculty position in the Occupational Therapy Department at the University of Alabama in Birmingham to research the physical and psychosocial benefits of integrating simple magic tricks into the therapy and education of individuals with disabilities. The documented results, much of which has been published in several international research journals, are nothing short of phenomenal.

You may be asking how mastering a simple magic trick can have such a positive effect. The biggest reason is that the art of magic has the ability to capture and hold the attention of people of all ages. Children especially are intrigued by the seeming impossibility of a magic trick. By tapping into their natural curiosity, we can teach them to perform magic tricks and the results are improvement in their motor skills and coordination, greater ability to organize tasks and movements, and a tremendous boost in their confidence and self-esteem. And equally important, this activity provides them the opportunity to develop social skills that are so often critical to their success and acceptance.

People who have disabilities are often thought to be different from the rest of us. They're not. They have hopes and dreams just like everyone, but their future is often molded by the attitudes and perceptions we have about them. As a society, we have to stop focusing on their disabilities and start appreciating their abilities. This film will allow them to tell their stories in their own words in a compassionate and captivating way. Their experiences can move us one step closer to transforming our attitudes and fostering hope.

If you agree that raising awareness is a positive step in changing people's attitudes toward the disabled, then I hope you'll see the value in making this film. Once it is completed, we hope it will be shown in film festivals, community theatres, on college campuses, in local churches, on television, and anywhere else people gather. But we can only make this film if people like you join us in this effort. I hope you will. All contributions are tax-deductible in the USA.

Please, watch the video. There's a lot more here than meets the eye. The power of a simple magic trick may be the best magic of all!

13. The Original Suspended Animation
--------------------------------------------
Message by John Taylor (Aust)

I would like to announce and welcome Willie Kennedy from www.wkmagic.com to
the official builders team for the Suspended Animation Illusion.

Due to demand for the original Suspended Animation after 13 years I have decided to get a 2nd builder, so this now makes Bill Smith and Willie Kennedy the ONLY official builders in the world of the Suspended Animation illusion.

Please Note: Buyer beware - There are many copy props and builders like Tilford Illusions, StarTrixx, and 52 Magic that do NOT have the rights to sell my invention, they never have and never will. So if you hear of any other builder besides Willie Kennedy and Bill Smith you know they are building fake Suspended Animations.

Please beware of poor quality imitations that could prove very dangerous to you and your assistants as I have seen one of these rip off props break at the pedestal causing near total disaster!

Please support original illusions and magic props by only buying from the authorised builders who know how to build them properly (and immaculately!) and understand the illusion inside and out. For more info please check out www.suspendedanimationillusion.com I urge Illusionists world-wide to please do what's right and be ethical with all purchases otherwise creators like myself and others will stop inventing as there's no point in selling something that is going to get ripped off anyway. Piracy is damaging all of us, the inventors, builders and performers alike so please don't be a part of it and do the right thing for you and the industry.

* The Gentleman aka Mark Kalin - Classic magic reimagined

* The Trickster aka Jeff Hobson - Comedy magic. The biggest selling magic show on earth will appear on The Civic stage in May for a two week season featuring seven world grand master magicians in The Illusionists: Witness the Impossible.

The Illusionists: Witness the Impossible launched in January 2012 with a sell-out season at Sydney Opera House reaching an audience of 31,000 in nine days, followed by a Mexico City eight-day season with an audience of 42,000. More recently the show packed out Adelaide Festival Centre and Queensland Performing Arts Centre, and will visit Auckland before a launching world tour from London's West End.

The hand-picked cast of internationally renowned illusionists together create a blockbuster stage show featuring a stunning mix of their most outrageous and unbelievable optical illusions including nail-biting Russian roulette, jaw-dropping acts of levitation, mind-reading, disappearance and escapes.

This show sees the magicians take their cue from the showmanship of the great illusionists of the past - such as Houdini - and combine it with contemporary sets, costume design, technology and live band Z, best known as touring band for Hip Hop legend NaS, to create a spell-binding family-friendly blockbuster. Creative Producer Simon Painter says the show is a world first, with each of the seven international illusionists the best in their niche and together creating a 21st century stage spectacular that will leave audiences spellbound.

"From Dan Sperry's shock illusions to comedy magician Jeff Hobson to Escapologist Andrew Basso who performs the Houdini inspired underwater escape live on stage, there is no other group of magicians who can deliver the mind-blowing entertainment that The Illusionists do at every show.

"Kevin James, The Inventor, is the man who created most of the famous illusions and tricks that you'll see performed anywhere in the world by top magicians, and we have him bringing his favourite illusions to life as part of the show." Robbie Macrae, Director of THE EDGE Performing Arts Centre says that The Illusionists is a magic show like never before seen in New Zealand and another major stage show for Auckland and the rest of New Zealand to enjoy.

"We're incredibly excited to have secured The Illusionists for a season at The Civic. We haven't had a blockbuster magic show of this kind in Auckland before and we know that the theatricality and artistry of the show will completely
astonish our audiences."
