Woerner
Can modern day magic ever really be "cool" again?
The art form has been pretty brutalized by folks like Criss
Angel and David Blaine, and yet Hollywood still thinks they
can presto-changeo modern perception into some kind of "Oceans
11 with magic" movie with the upcoming Now You See Me.
But can it work?

3. Major Update For Vanish Magazine
---------------------------------------------
Message by Paul Romhany - Editor Vanish Magazine
I'm
very pleased to make this important announcement. Because
Vanish Magic
Magazine has grown SO quickly since its release earlier this
year I have taken on a co-editor. This position will be taken
up by none other than Chipper Lowell from the USA. Chipper
is a very talented and extremely busy performer with contacts
all over the world. He has been helping with Vanish working
behind the scenes and recently I approached to see if he would
like to take on the job of co-editor. Chipper will be helping
me edit, design and work on interviews for the magazine. With
each issue you will see more input from Chipper - I'm VERY
excited to welcome him to the Vanish team.
Coming
Up In Edition Five
A few highlights include a full interview with Illusionist
Michael Giles. Michael has had an incredible career with ups
and downs and he is very candid in this interview about his
past and the present.
This
issue we start a new series of columns by a group of respected
magicians, and this first one is by Eugene Burger. There is
a great article on Acting and Magic by Joey Pipia, as well
as a new series by Canadian magician Leif David on the business
side of magic. We also have a variety of effects you can learn
ranging from cards to mentalism. This issue will be ready early
December - stay tuned to find out more or download the app

4. Milt Larsen Looks Back At 50 Years Of The Magic Castle
--------------------------------------------
Message by Stan Allen - Editor MAGIC Magazine
Milt
Larsen Looks back at 50 Years of the Magic Castle
By Stan Allen, Editor of MAGIC Magazine
While
2013 is still over a month away, this issue officially turns
the final page on another year of MAGIC Magazine. And it's
been quite the year. Cover stories alone featured Pit Hartling,
John Bannon, Fielding West, Steve Cohen, Marco Tempest, Jay
Sankey, Mike Bent, Neil Patrick Harris, Derek Hughes, David
Copperfield, and Korean FISM Winners. And now Milt Larsen
and the Magic Castle, which begins celebrating its 50th Anniversary
in January.
How
do we cover such a milestone? By going straight to the founder
and twisting his arm to write about the "magic house"
he built. Okay, it really didn't take too much arm-twisting,
as Milt is still a writer at heart. This month, he tells how
the club and the clubhouse came to be. And while this starts
us at the very beginning, the following twelve installments,
like Milt himself, will be jumping all over the place. And
like the Castle itself, this should be a fun ride.
Also
in the December issue, you'll find the story of Jason England
and Paul Wilson's "Road Trip!" across the US in
search of magicians, hustlers, and collectors of the unusual;
a feature on Marcel, the FISM-winning Prince of Illusions
from the Netherlands; a holiday gift guide featuring fun presents
you can dream about all year long; an interview about magicians
with one of the producers of America's Got Talent; coverage
of magic events in London, Spain, Chile, China, Texas, and
Hollywood; and much more.
One
of the big additions to the MAGIC family this year is MAGIC
Plus. It's the bridge between print and digital, and it's
available free to everyone holding a print copy of this magazine,
whether you subscribe or pick it up in a magic shop. This
month, MAGIC Plus features bonus tutorial videos from "Talk
About Tricks," "Directions," "Bent on
Deception," and "The Almighty Dollar." We also
have two bonus Pluses this month. Our feature story on England
and Wilson's recent excursion is divided into eight parts;
each part has a video available, so you view the clips as
you read the story.
The
other bonus this month is a holiday gift from Joshua Jay.
Spoiler Alert: it's a video download called The Bluff Shift
Bundle - and it's free! All of this is free to everyone who
has a copy of the December issue of MAGIC Magazine. With a
copy of the issue at hand, pull up a chair and the Internet,
go to our website, and enjoy.

5. Remarkable Magic #58 - Nick Lewin
--------------------------------------------
Message by Nick Lewin (US)
Thanks
Given.
I
am writing this on the day before the American holiday of
Thanksgiving Day. I want to extend a very sincere Thanksgiving
wishes for all my friends in the USA, and everywhere else
Magic New Zealand reaches. Last thing I heard, that was over
70 countries, but the number may be higher now that the methods
of digital distribution have increased.
I
want to give a few special 'Thanks' to some people in the
magic world in my column this week. I'm going to start with
a really big thank you to my dear friend and editor Alan Watson.
Putting together this publication is a lot of hard work and
consumes a great deal of time. This isn't done for cash but
love of magic and I really appreciate it.
Before
I was a writer for Magic New Zealand, I was an enthusiastic
reader and I still am. It is a really great addition to the
magic community and I am proud to be a part of it. On a personal
level, this Thanksgiving Day also falls on Alan's birthday---a
great chance to say thanks and offer my warmest wishes for
a great birthday. Have an extra glass of red wine for me,
my Kiwi brother. Give a toast to Paul Romhany for his bold
and successful launch of 'Vanish'.
How
about a big thank you to all the owners of magic stores around
the world, you provide a great service to all of us magicians.
Many of my happiest hours, growing up, were spent in magic
shops, where I got some great advice and met some wonderful
people. It isn't an easy job to keep a 'brick and mortar'
store running in this day and age---thanks for doing it guys,
we need somewhere to meet on a Saturday morning!
Thank
you to the many people who keep the Magic Castle humming along
as it enters its 50th year. What an amazing achievement to
see that crazy Larsen dream reach its half-century mark. How
many magicians have been inspired, entertained and educated
due to the Castle. I would be incorrect not to give a special
'shout out' to Milt as the man at the centre of it all. Thanks
Milt!
Publishing
a genuine ink and paper magazine is becoming tougher than
ever in the Internet age---just like running a store. However,
it is a tremendous resource to magicians and adds greatly
to our heritage. How about a special thank you to Stan Allen
and Richard Kaufman, for not only keeping their magazines
available in solid form---but also for adapting to the digital
age in different and meaningful ways. Thanks guys, you are
real publishers and I respect your work immensely.
Sammy
Smith had big shoes to fill when he took over editing the
'Linking Ring' from Phil Willmarth and he has done an incredible
job. Michael Close has done an equally fine job with 'M.U.M.'
Along with all the other folk who keep the I.B.M. and S.A.M.
ticking along, you help supply a heartbeat that unites the
pulse of magicians throughout the community. Thank you for
your service, hard work and talents, the magic world appreciates
it.
On
a really personal level, I want to give big thanks to some
friends and individuals who have improved my skills as a magician.
Many thanks to past masters; Billy McComb, Ken Brooke, Pat
Page, Jules Lenier, Maurice Fogel and Alan Shaxon: your spirit
stays with me constantly, and my thanks go out to you each
time I walk out onstage.
Contemporary
magicians who inspire me, with their presence, and the truly
classy way they think/act/behave include; Norm & Lupe
Nielsen, David Regal, Steve Mitchell, Jack & Dove Goldfinger,
Lance Burton, Richard Webster, Jon Stetson, Max Maven, Eugene
Burger, Jeff McBride and Jason Andrews. You guys are amongst
the Aces in our communal deck!
Finally,
my thanks to everyone I missed in this article (who I will
remember the moment I push the send button on my keyboard)
and thanks to all my readers out there, without you I would
have missed one of the most rewarding aspects of my life in
magic. THANK YOU.
You

videos on my website, at www.nicklewin.com

6. In Conversation with Pat Fallon - #10
--------------------------------------------
Message by Anthony Darkstone Brook - Europe/USA

AD:
Convention thoughts .
PF: We all remember our first convention like no other for
lots of reasons but mine was a real eye opener. I expected
the level of talent and performance to be much higher than
it was and with a few exceptions I believed I was as good
as most of the competition acts I saw that weekend.
That
was a big mistake, as I found out the following year when
I entered the
competitions. I had greatly underestimated the difference
in performing before your peers in that special environment.
The
magic I presented wasn't all that bad, just the wrong type
of material. However I still managed to win the showmanship
award and got my first mention in the magical press. On discovering
that the standard of magic was so low gave me the confidence
boost I needed to pursue a career as a professional entertainer.
I fear that particular statement will upset a lot of people
who were around at that time, but it's a fact.
Looking
back now makes me realize that I must have had more guts than
brains as I possessed very little magical knowledge and had
absolutely no experience of show business. Not really the
criteria for considering such a bold move.
My
first real learning curve was when I discovered how old fashioned
most of the magicians in Ireland were at that time. They were
stuck in a time warp of a Jack Hughes prop acts and were getting
left behind with the changing face of entertainment. Again
this is something that some people will not like me saying
but again it's true. Not only were the props out of fashion
but so were their suits and their style of performance and
patter.
Knowing
what not to do is half the battle of knowing the right thing
to do in any situation. If I wanted to be successful I would
have develop the kind of act that would work in the new world
of entertainment.
Something
Tommy Wonder had said in an interview really struck a chord
with me. He said that "Magicians should not just be in
the business of fulfilling existing markets, but be in the
business of creating new markets for their work. With this
in mind I bought the 'Art of Hopping Tables' by Mark Leveridge
which enabled me to get a grasp on what was needed to peruse
this avenue of work.
Close-up
and table hopping magic was virtually nonexistent in Ireland
so it was a bit of a hard sell at first to generate interest,
but I managed to get into a restaurant for Sunday lunch time
and then progressed from there into the night time slot at
weekends .Towards the end of 1988 I met probably the most
influential person I have ever met. Paul Welch was a young
band manager fighting to establish new acts on the pop music
scene who saw the opportunity to promote a magic act too great
a challenge to ignore.
Paul
introduced me to the five year plan which was to make me into
an international act within that time frame. I was skeptical
to say the least, but decided to play along to humor him more
than anything else. He encouraged me to grow my hair long
and put it in a pony tail to improve my image.
With
Paul's help I secured my first pre-recorded television performance
and soon after that my first live television interview and
performance along with some radio and newspaper articles.
By now I was established as a regular close up magician working
in restaurants and hotels so I was able piggyback onto other
things. I began performing close-up magic in night clubs and
then slowly but surely I moved into the corporate market.
Despite
wanting to perform in a modern way I had a fascination with
old style magic so continued to work on whiter tie and tails
silk act, if only for my own amusement. I reluctantly entered
the competitions at the Limerick convention and much to my
surprise I swept the board winning everything in sight. It
was a great confidence boost but I never saw this act as a
commercial venture. Again how wrong can one be.
One
night club manager asked me if I could perform an on stage
piece to music during what was known as the slow set. I had
the silk act and was contemplating introducing some doves
into it so this was now the perfect opportunity to do so.

9. A Magic Circle Youth Initiative
--------------------------------------------
Message forwarded on by Alan Maskell
The
Magic Circle Young Magician of the Year Competition is held
every two years at The Magic Circle Headquarters, in the magnificent
Centre for the Magic Arts near Euston Station.
Competitors, aged between 14 and 18 years, have to present
a stage act, suitable for family entertainment, lasting between
eight and twelve minutes. They are judged on their technique
and general ability, presentation and originality, appearance
and personality and the routining and magical content of their
act. Over the years, competing acts have covered a wide range
of magic - manipulations, illusions, comedy, pure theatre
and even mentalism - usually giving the judges a difficult
job selecting the winner. In 2013, the heats will take place
on March 10th and the Final on 7th April.
The
winner holds the title of "The Young Magician of the
Year" and is awarded the Derrick Speight Trophy. He or
she receives admission to full Membership of The Magic Circle
at the age of eighteen, with the entrance fee and annual subscription
for the first four years of membership waived.
The
Competition which has been held biennially since 1961, celebrated
its 50th anniversary with the last Competition in 2011. It
so far has produced 27 winners, (there have twice been joint
winners) most of who have gone on to successful careers in
entertainment, including the first winner, Johnny Hart, who
in 1961 appeared at the London Palladium and subsequently
presented his magic in Las Vegas. Russ Stevens, joint winner
in 1977, starred in the Mystique Illusion Show in Blackpool
for nearly 8 years. Richard Cadell became a highly successful
illusionist and is now Sooty's presenter. Andrew O'Connor,
who won in 1981 has developed a highly successful career,
starring in the touring production of "Barnum",
producing and presenting numerous TV shows and has recently
made his film directorial debut. Dominic Wood took the title
in 1995, going on to become a favourite children's television
presenter. More recently, Philip Hitchcock, Paul Dabek and
Michael Jordan have gone on to busy careers in magic.

information may be obtained from the Competition Secretary
Dr.

11. Rare Magic Book Collection Of George Sands Is Now For
Sale
--------------------------------------------
Message by Alan Sands
I
am the son of the late, George Sands. My father wrote the
routines RopeSational and Sandsational Rope - the two rope
tricks most rope routines are now based on. It is the routine
David Copperfield used when he did ropes; the routine used
by Comedy Magician Mac King as his opening in Las Vegas. Others
that use these very routines include Jeff McBride & Michael
Finney. Daryl's rope routine is more than 50% based on my
father's routines, etc. (www.alansands.com/gsropes)
My
father also wrote the Encyclopedia of Balloon Modeling, a
book that was one of the first books on balloons. George Sands
published booklets with over 880 pages of other completely
original magic and routines adapted from classics. (www.alansands.com/magic-hypnosis-store/george-sands.html)
My
father passed away in 2006. I inherited this treasure of magic,
and I also inherited his personal collection of classic magic
books, some rare, some not so rare. some worn, some not as
worn. I am selling his magic book collection to raise funds
so I can publish his personal magic writings into hardcover
collector's volumes, and to preserve his name in the annals
of magic history with the other great writers, creators and
publishers. With proceeds and profits I make from the sale
of the hard covered books, I will buy beer.
Please
visit the following web site and peruse the list of 500 books
currently listed. More will also be added as we catalog them.
www.thats-impossible.com
I
am also collecting stories about my father, videos and other
memorabilia to add to the collector's editions. If you knew
my father, met my father, have a story, married one of his
ex-wives or six daughters, want to make up a fish story or
tall tail and want to share, I am happy to listen.

are NO losers at the Society of American Magicians Convention!

Some
of you may be on that select committee known as The S.A.M.
