4. Joe Porper Rip-offs
--------------------------------------------
Message by Carl Williams (US)
As
you know I seldom have much to say in your great column however
once in a
while an issue comes along that really stirs up my American/Welsh
blood. It has come to my attention that the Chinese are making
rip off copies of the Joe Porper version of the Lippencott
box. To make matters worse they are selling this item at a
fraction of the cost that Joe is asking for his.
I
am not a close friend of Joe Porper, in fact, I hardly know
the man, but over the years I have come to respect his incredible
craftsmanship. Whenever Joe turns on any of his power tools
you can be sure the result will be something special. The
item to which I now refer is a very clever innovation of the
classic Lippencott box. Joe has invented an exceptionally
unique design and has applied it to this old chestnut. Joe
has done very well with this item in the marketplace.
At
lease this has been the case until just recently when the
Chinese decided to move in for a piece of the action. Needless
to say Joe's uniquely machined apparatus is far superior in
every respect to the Chinese rip off model but still there
are those American magicians that want to save a few pennies
by going, "cheap screw" with the Chinese copy.
I
am told there is nothing that can be done about this sick
situation. I know how Joe must feel because, in the past,
I too have experienced the same kind of violation regarding
a few of my efforts to develop new magic items. In closing
let me say one thing regarding this kind of criminal behavior,
namely, we Americans don't have to give these thieves our
money. We have a choice to purchase American quality magic,
so let's do it!
Pay
the additional money Joe is asking for his well-crafted box,
it is worth it. Joe, in my opinion, is an outstanding craftsman
with a most innovative mind. Do you really want junk apparatus
in your act, or would you rather pay a little more so you
can perform at your best with the best? Together both builders
and American magicians can beat these Chinese crooks.
Let's
buy American made magic to enable guys like Joe Porper to
continue to produce the clever, well made, magic masterpieces
he is so well known for. We may not be able to undersell these
unethical Chinese rip off businessmen but we can slow them
down considerably by attacking their merchandise outlets.
I for one desire the Joe Porper high quality kind of magic
and intend to do all I can to promote it. How about giving
a hand and a few extra bucks the next time you buy magic apparatus
and get a Joe Porper Lippencott box American style, you can't
go wrong.

5. Remarkable Magic #51 - Nick Lewin

Message by Nick Lewin (US)
Great
advice and tips from a Pro.
This
is a somewhat belated second half of a column I wrote recently
about Gary Hunter. For those of you who aren't familiar with
Gary, he is a superb ventriloquist and also one of the leading
cruise directors in the cruise industry.
Gary
has seen the industry from both sides, as a performer and
as the man who has to fill out the report that may (or may
not) get an act rebooked. He is an ultimate professional in
both these capacities and I recently took the opportunity
to have him share some of his insights with our readers.
I
asked Gary to share five 'golden rules' for performers with
me. I didn't give him time to think about the answers he gave
me, instead I tried to get his immediate, and impromptu responses.
Although I was fully aware that Gary was speaking as a non-magician,
I was delighted that his answers translated universally and
seamlessly to a magical audience. Here is his list....
1.
Be relaxed onstage. The more relaxed you are, then the more
relaxed your audience will be. He rightly pointed out that
audiences instinctively know when you are comfortable with
your material and when you aren't. A relaxed, confident tone
will let the audience know that they are in the hands of a
pro, which is great basis for a strong show.
2.
Really know your material before going onstage and then trust
your material, this status is made easier by making sure that
your act consists of largely true and tried material. Hunter
says that part of his success has never trying to be too original.
This certainly doesn't mean he steals people's jokes or acts.
Gary points out that there are many universally wonderful
jokes out there, which have been around for years, and are
proven commodities. Your job is to figuring out an interesting
route to get to the punch line, and then maybe giving that
punch line a little twist. A familiar and funny series of
jokes can act as 'tent poles' to keep your act moving in an
entertaining fashion.
3.
Gary is a firm believer in the comedic 'Law of Three.' Framing
your jokes in sets of three, 'joke-joke-BIG joke.' He then
sets up a storyline by interjecting original material and
jokes to pave the way to his ultimate destination. He has
written his show so that he is continually telling a story
that keeps leading to his next major reaction. He lets the
audience enjoy the journey as well as the destination.
4.
Dress like an entertainer, and make sure that when you hit
that stage you are dressed above your audience. Dress like
a showman---not necessarily glitz and glamour but meticulously.
Gary is a performer from the old school and never sits down
prior to a show in his working pants. The only crease in his
pants will be the razor sharp one on the front where it should
be! Oh, and polish those shoes...
5.
Know how to get on and off your stage. Your entry and exit
onstage is the most important thing you will do during the
show. You must walk out onstage so that people will sit up
and pay attention. You want them to subconsciously change
position, doing this will help cause their blood to flow and
this will energize them for your performance. You may be the
third or fourth act they are watching and you want their full
attention. When the show is finished you have to know how
to take your bow, really enjoy receiving your applause; and
then get off and stay off, leaving them wanting more. A much
quoted but often overlooked state of affairs!
I
really liked Gary's list! They are simple and direct points
that are worth reflecting upon carefully, and can improve
any show with their application. I thank him for taking the
time to share them with me and allowing me to pass them on
to you.
Check
out my website, I will be releasing a very cool new effect
shortly called 'Nick Lewin's Ultimate Card in Envelope.' It
is an inexpensive blockbuster of a close-up item that has
become the hit of my lecture. It is a gem of a routine ideal
for 'strolling' performers because it re-sets itself every
time you perform it! Details of its release and the rest of
my product line are available at www.nicklewin.com

Working
any large event can be a lot of fun and a great means of revenue
for you. It gets you excited performing for a large amount
of people and the ability to market to them during the event
itself in numerous ways.
However,
working larger events like fairs and festivals pose other
problems that you simply do not have to deal with when working
smaller markets. There are so many variables one must consider.
The
first rule of thumb is to NEVER assume that things are going
to be provided for you or that common sense will prevail.
Sometimes it does, but many times it simply does not.
Assuming
you will be provided certain things only leads to a lot of
headaches and problems on the day of the event itself. If
in doubt, always ask. This is one reason why I tell everyone
to use contracts and to send out and information gathering
style letter or email to the client to fill out.
This
letter/email is designed to simply allow you to receive valuable
answers and feedback on various aspects of the show and the
event itself to ensure things run smoothly for the client
and for yourself. This is YOUR opportunity to make sure you
go over everything and anything that can help or hinder your
ability to put on a top show.
So
what should you ask a festival style client? What types of
things would you want to ensure you go over? Let me list a
few of them here to give you a general idea.
Important
Information and Questions:
-
What type of staging do you have available for the day and
for our usage? Example, pavilion, grass, stage, band shell,
show mobile, tent, awning etc...We can pretty much work with
anything you have but wanted to find out what you already
had set up. Certain stage set ups will allow us to provide
more illusions incorporated into the show experience.
-
Will we be sharing the staging area with other entertainers
that day? We can certainly work with any entertainers and
are happy to do so. This just allows us to know who we are
sharing with so that we can work out the best way to move
items on and off the stage between acts.
-
We will need to be able to drive our vehicle to as close to
the staging area as possible on the day of the show. We have
a lot of equipment and this makes for easy loading/unloading.
We will also need to be able to move the truck back near the
staging area at completion of our performances that day. Does
this work for you?
-
Will we be needing any parking passes or information in regards
to a special way that we have to gain access to the festival
area?
-
Is there an area that can be made available for us to get
changed into our performance attire? Even a restroom would
serve well for this.
-
What time are people arriving that day to set up? We would
like to arrive early enough to set up without being in any
ones way or causing traffic problems. Can you describe the
event schedule that day so that we can work with you on the
best arrival time?
-
We will need to gain access to electric; we have a 100 ft
electric cord should we need it but prefer access to be fairly
close by. Is this a problem for you?
-
We will need approx a 10x10 ft space somewhere next to our
performance area, this will allow us to store our props and
equipment and have it set up and ready to go on. We would
need this area from the time we arrive till the end of our
performances that day. We are happy to work with other acts
and your committee to make sure we are not in anyone's way.
Does this work for you?
-
In the event of inclement weather what is your weather or
rain policy for the fair or festival? Is it rain or shine
and who would make contact with us in order to get updated
cancellation information?
As
you can see these are just a few of the questions I will always
go over with the festival client at time of booking. By asking
these questions, I not only assure a less problematic time
at the event, but I also am looked upon as an entertainer
who is a true professional. The perceived value goes up in
the mind of the client.
Another
reason to always ask these things is that the client often
times has so much going on the day of the event, that their
head is spinning. They are mulit-tasking and running around
trying to simply handle every and all situations. The last
thing I want to do is add to their burden.
Even
worse is that if you need something, you end up waiting a
long time for it. If you are like me, I am self-sufficient.
I make sure every and all shows I do I am as self-contained
as I can be. This gives me more freedom and the ability to
handle things myself without relying upon others.
I
hope these ideas are of help to you and allow you to have
better success at your festival style events now and into
the future.
As
always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts.
So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions
or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com.
I would love to hear from you.

Message by Anthony Darkstone Brook - Europe/USA

AD:
A small but vital detail ..I know what you mean as I have
a friend who lives in a Palace but he works there too as part
of the Stable Management. you yourself know a few things about
stables and horses.
PF:
Yes Tony, I do. Soon after my 2nd birthday, my family and
I moved to the new development of Sallynoggin where I spent
a very happy childhood with my two older brothers. I was schooled
by the Christian Brothers in Eblana Avenue in Dun Laoghaire,
but I left school when I was 14 years old to embark on a career
as a flat race jockey.
I
signed on as an apprentice to racehorse trainer Kevin Kerr
whose stables were located in Clonee in County Meath about
twenty miles from my home. Together with fifteen other young
apprentices, I also lived there in somewhat primitive conditions
and was poorly paid.
I
remained there for the seven years of my apprenticeship but
in truth, I never established any real success as a jockey.
It was time to move on and in 1972 I moved to Newmarket with
my girlfriend Janet to take up a position of work jockey with
the former Queens jockey Doug Smith who had begun training
there.
AD:
You have any better luck there?
PF:
Not really Tony. My Newmarket move was not a happy one and
within a year I decided to leave the racing business altogether
and I moved to London.
AD: That proved to be a bit of a turning point didn't it?
PF:
Yes, it was. I married Janet and trained as a hotel and catering
manager. After a couple of years we moved back to Ireland
where we managed a number of small hotels in Killarney and
Dingle on the beautiful Ring of Kerry before going into private
service with the Guinness Family in Castleknock in Dublin.
AD:
It was around that time that your passion for Magic began;
share some of that story.
PF:
It was during that period I discovered my passion for magic
when I saw a young magician, Dan O'Donoghue (now the husband
of Ron McMillan's daughter Georgia) demonstrating a deck of
trick playing cards in Arnotts Department Store in Henry Street,
Dublin.
Also
English magician Paul Daniels was regularly on television
at that time and when he appeared for a two week run in Dublin's
Gaiety Theatre, I was at the front of the line for tickets.
AD:
That was the turning point?
PF:
Oh yes indeed Tony, that it was. On that February night in
Dublin I decided what I wanted to do with the rest of my life.
I knew I could never settle for anything other than being
a Professional magician.
