The highlight for me this week was watching Keith Barry's
mentalisim show. His Irish humour was extremely entertaining
and I loved how he put his own twist on the material he used.

2. Keith Barry Received A Well-Deserved Standing Ovation
---------------------------------------------
Message by Richard Webster (NZ)
Keith Barry received a well-deserved standing ovation at the
end of his two and a half hour show before a near capacity
(800+) audience in Auckland on Wednesday night. His show was
fast-moving, and full of energy and humour. I was captivated
by the entire show, but particularly enjoyed his original
routines for classic mentalism effects, such as the magic
square, tossed out deck, and Key-R-Rect.
After the show, a long line of people gathered to say a few
words to Keith, and in most cases, to have their photograph
taken with him. It was good to see so many local magicians
attend what must be the highlight of Auckland's magical year.
Come back soon, Keith.

5. Abbott's Get-Together On The Magic Word
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells (US)
Podcasts
from the 75th annual Abbott's Get Together are now available
in cyberspace on The Magic Word. As always, Scott Wells uploads
daily podcasts from conventions he attends with interviews
with some of the talent and registrants. If you can't be there
in person, then this is the next best thing. The Magic Word
also includes notes and photos from the convention, too. The
Get-Together ran from August 1-4 and you can see and hear
it all at http://scottwellsmagic.posterous.com/ or you can
download the audio podcasts only through iTunes. Just do a
search in iTunes under podcasts for The Magic Word.
And
subscribe today so you don't miss the updates from the Midwest
Magic Jubilee in St. Louis which will be held on August 9-11.
Scott will be one of the performers on the bill there, too,
presenting his late night talk show with the talent, "Now
You See It With Scott Wells".

6. Remarkable Magic #45 - Nick Lewin

Message by Nick Lewin (US)
Smart
and Handsome Jack.
I
was delighted to catch a performance recently in the Parlour
at the Magic Castle by a really great magician who is also
a fabulous performer. Oh what a joy it is when those two qualities
are combined into one entertainer. The performer was Handsome
Jack.
Now
he wasn't actually christened or given the birth name of Handsome
Jack, in fact many of you will know him by his 'real world'
name John Lovick. Handsome Jack is the delightfully quirky
alter ego of the scholarly and rather serious Mr. Lovick.
They are a mighty fine pair of magicians!
I'm
not saying that Jack isn't handsome, but it sure gets a huge
laugh when he walks out after being introduced as the Castle's
resident sex symbol. In many ways it is quite difficult to
fully define what 'H.J.'s character really is all about. It
is self-depreciating and carefully considered, all at the
same time. I'm going to revert to the word I used before quirky.
After
taking the time to allow the audience to adjust to his style,
a piece of rather standard looking piece of foolery with a
handkerchief resulted in a deadly smooth production of a large
glass filled with liquid. It sure fooled the hell out of me!
I wasn't expecting it and was suddenly aware that I had better
pay full attention to this lanky looking performer.
I
hate to write about really good performers, and just do a
breakdown of the effects they performed. It doesn't do justice
to so many of their skills and talents and usually turns into
a laundry list of effects. It is usually my goal, when writing
about a performer that I have just had the pleasure of discovering,
to try and catch something of the 'taste' of their style.
I
hasten to add that I am outrageously late in 'discovering'
Handsome Jack's show; he has been a Castle favorite for years
and a multiple nominee for Parlour magician of the year, for
many years running. The loss has been entirely mine in failing
to discover his double threat appeal.
I
would, however, be entirely incorrect if I were to fail to
make a special comment about the Handsome One's book test.
It is an absolute doozy! I am a sucker for a good book test
and this one was as good as it gets. It had a great lead in,
a real reason for the selection of books involved and a visual
finale that made the divination of the 'word' all the more
effective.
What
I enjoyed most about the show was the assurance and easy grace
with which 'H.J.' paced his show and combined his humor and
really fine magic. It was a masterful and thoughtful blend
that had obviously been designed for the room in which it
was presented. Parlor magic is a very specific style of entertainment
and this show truly made you feel you were present in the
performer's parlor.
I
was so impressed with the show that I couldn't wait to explore
the magician whose thinking had created Handsome Jack. I immediately
acquired a copy of Mr. Lovick's book Switch--- an exhaustive
study of dollar bill switches. I briefly enthused about it
in these pages a couple of weeks ago and it is a fine piece
of writing and research.
It
is wonderful returning to Los Angeles after such a long absence
and getting to discover new and exciting performers who have
become 'Castle Stars' while my work has had me based in other
cities. Handsome Jack and Scholarly John have become new favorites
for me. I can't wait to enjoy more of their work!
Check
out my website and list of products at http://www.nicklewin.com

which were featured on my 90's show on the Fox Network--'The
Entertainment Files.' The latest video features Master Magician

7. Marketing: Total Solutions Provider - #268 - Kyle Peron
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kyle Peron (US)
magic4u02@aol.com
http://www.kpmagicproducts.com

The
other day I was talking with a friend about the trend of show
inquiries being a bit down this year over years past. We got
to talking about why this may be and asked him what they were
currently doing to revamp and change their marketing approach.
What
I realized was that they had a good show but were missing
out on a very strong but fundamental concept in marketing.
It is all in how the customer sees you and should see you.
If you have the wrong concept, your marketing is not going
to be as focused as it should be.The biggest thing I can teach
anyone is to know that we are not magicians, storytellers
or entertainers first. It shocks folks when I say it. But
let me explain. Customers should never see us as these things
first. In their minds they should see us as total Solutions
Providers. There in lies the difference.
As
a Solutions Provider, my goal is to lock in on creating customized
solutions that meet and exceed the needs of the person whom
I am doing business with. Many entertainers these days really
try and sell the show itself and how much fun it will be.
This is true but it does not get at the heart of why the customer
really wants you or may want to hire you.
For
example, why does anyone buy any service these days? It is
because they have a need or a problem they need fixed. You
buy a washing machine based on having a direct need for one.
You may be tired of washing by hand. You may be paying too
much at the cleaners or the old machine is not fast or efficient
enough. ALL of these are problems they are seeking solutions
for. The company or service provider that BEST solves these
problems is more likely to be the one to get hired or have
their products sold.
The
same applies to entertainers. We just often do not think like
this. In the marketing world, we should always think, "What
are the direct needs and problems that this potential client
may have that I can directly solve for them?" Once we
start to get into this mode of thinking, the marketing we
do is much more direct and powerful. We are not just selling
a fun show. Now we are selling a solution to a need we know
they have.
Whenever
we do this the perceived value climbs much higher in the mind
of the prospect. Instead of us being just magician A,B C or
D, they suddenly see you much differently. So what I do for
every marketing I send out is to research my market and get
to know what the needs are of the people booking me in this
market.
This
information is so valuable. I always ask my repeat clients
what their needs are and what they originally were hoping
I would do for them. I have built a relationship with them
so I trust them to give me honest feedback. The more I know
about the needs, the more my marketing can directly solve
them.
Instead
of the classic "magic for all occasions" approach,
my marketing is much more on target. Now the prospect is getting
a flyer or email or direct mail campaign that is really talking
to them. They see that I understand what their needs are because
I state it and I also state how I solve it for them and how
it benefits them directly.
This
is a very powerful approach and a way of thinking that really
can and does make a difference.
If
you would like additional information on marketing techniques
and approaches, please feel free to contact me at magic4u02@aol.com.
I would love to hear more and get a chance to help you if
I can. My pleasure.

8. In Conversation with George Schindler - #5

Message by Anthony Darkstone Brook - Europe/USA
AD:
One of the most important things I learnt from Ken Brooke,
Pat Page, Ali Bongo and indeed yourself was the value of being
an Entertainer. a Magical Entertainer and not just someone
who performs tricks . please talk about your philosophy on
that.
GS:
On my income tax form my occupation is Entertainer. If we
can't entertain, why do magic or plays the piano or anything?
I always prefer to go for the laugh rather than fool anyone.
My motto is "Entertainment First! " The magic is
my vehicle.
AD:
Last year, over breakfast at your home, you blew me away with
a couple of effects which you have since put on the market.
You kindly gave me that CD entitled 'Party Card Tricks' and
I am totally enthralled by those effects. It has MP3 instructions
and a PDF file. As I'm a non-card Magician who can't do a
double-lift to save his life, those effects make me look like
a genius with a deck. You have no idea how much I love those
effects and performing them. Tell us a bit about what inspired
that CD, the "voice instruction" idea and a brief
description of the effects..
GS:
In the 1950's, there was a recording done by Zingone who performed
a few
effects. I also heard that Blackstone Sr. had one out as well.
I was a consultant to Reiss Games and their magic sets were
great. One of the kits was Party Card Tricks on an audio cassette.
It did not sell well as people didn't have an easy way to
play it outside of their dining rooms. Bruce Kalver transcribed
the old cassette for me and it can now be downloaded to an
MP3 file and it can be played on iphones, iPods and laptops.
My voice gives the instructions and the magician provides
the deck and the secret something needed to do the self working
effects. They get a PDF file and a CD.

Richard
Turner is a phenomenon who creates, dazzles, entertains, and
motivates. Gaming experts and gamblers know and respect him
as a master Card Mechanic / Manipulator, who could take down
any casino or wipe out any high-stakes gambler. His unparalleled
skill with a deck of cards has stirred and staggered audiences
throughout the world.
Featured
in dozens of television specials around the globe, ranging
from "That's Incredible," "Ripley's Believe
It or Not," "The 700 Club," "The Paul
Daniels Show" on the BBC, and "World Geniuses"
in Japan. Richard is now indeliblyassociated to "winning
ways" with cards.
Richard
has entranced legends such as Muhammad Ali, Johnny Carson,
General Colin Powell, Bob Hope and recently bamboozled Brad
Pitt in the movie, "Tree of Life," which won Best
Film 2011 at the Cannes Film Festival.
When
not entertaining the rich and famous, he inspires students,
our military personnel, and Corporate America with lively
talks that coax, connect, and entertain. Being a possibility
thinker, Richard reveals what we see and fail to see and in
a vital and immersive way leads audiences on an exploration
of the seen and unseen, the real and unreal, while making
sense of our wondrous brains and in offbeat, entertaining
ways.
Being
blind since age 9, Richard reveals how to fully use all of
your senses, including vision. Providing examples of eyesight
insights, he shows how to apply his guiding motto: As you
think, so you are.as you dream determines what you become."
Many
publications have profiled his exploits, including Los Angeles
Times, the Dallas Times Herald, the Orlando Sentinel, and
Genii Magazine. He has also performed for hundreds of CEOs
of large corporations such as AT&T, IBM, ARCO Chemical,
USAA, Southwest Airlines, and many more.
The
recipient of many accolades and honors, Richard has received
the FBI Director's Community Leadership Award, Rotary Leader
(awarded by Siegfried and Roy), and was inducted into The
Magic Castle's Hall of Fame. He is also listed in Believe
the Unbelievable Book of World Records for his amazing "Eight-Coin
Roll."
When
he is not entertaining and educating, he actively practices
the martial arts. He is currently a Master, holding a sixth-degree
black belt in karate. His black belt test, ten rounds of three
minutes each, was so grueling it was televised and appeared
on the front page of the sports section of the Los Angeles
Times.
He
also designed and created a series of board and puzzle games,
including Batty and Texas Showdown. His company (Showdown
Creations Inc.) has produced a bestselling DVD series on advanced
card technique that is used by casinos and cardmen worldwide.
Due to his remarkably delicate "feel" for the pasteboards,
he has been the Touch Analyst for USPC, the largest card manufacturer
in the country, and is known for producing the finest quality
cards used by professional magicians and gamers.
He
has written a novel titled Re-Deal a Time-Travel Thriller
and has co-starred in Hood- winked, a stage show featuring
four of the most renowned international con artists.
The
forthcoming biography of Richard's life story, aptly titled,
all in - all out: Playing the Hands You Have Been Dealt intimately
discloses his credo of survival and triumph. Written by renowned

11. Update - IBM British Ring Convention
--------------------------------------------
Message by Geoffrey Newton PRO
Details
of the Eddie Dawes (photo) History of Mystery part of the
IBM British Ring Convention (Great Yarmouth 26th - 30th September)
have just been announced. The first speaker will be Will Houstoun
(current editor of The Magic Circular), in a talk entitled
"King Koko and the Magic Playlet" detailing how
short magical playlets became popular amongst magical illusionists.
Following
on comes Bryan Baggs with "Positive Aspects of Goldin".
From Horace Goldin's (known as "The Whirlwind Wizard")
first appearance in Britain in 1902 he made enormous contributions
to magic extending to a forty year period. He created illusions
including the visible sawing in half and was a superb close
up worker. He was popular with magicians and Bryan, a great
admirer of Goldin will consider all these attributes during
his section.
Finally,
well known award winning magician, magic editor, author and
one time pitchman Walt Lees takes to the stage. Using the
latter description he focuses on experiences and psychological
approaches used during his time of peddling Svengali Decks.
Entitled appropriately "Selling Svengalis" will
bring the very interesting 2012 History of Mystery to a close.
The
event takes place at the Hollywood Cinema on Saturday 29th
September at 2.15pm.
