2. Mega Thanks To Luis de Matos
---------------------------------------------
Message by Paul Daniels (UK)

Can I, through your incredible newsletter, thank all those who took part in the astonishing EMC experience. Of course mega thanks to Luis de Matos (who should be given every magical award in existence) and his lady Vanessa (Cor!), and all his whizz kids behind and in front of the scenes. It could not have been better. Words cannot describe the huge effort involved in making it all happen and the genius of Marco Tempest and David Britland. If ever anyone talks about the A Team of Magic, that was it.

I would also like to thank those who sat around the tables with me and who
imparted their knowledge and skills quite freely, and I do mean freely; remember no-one got paid. That's a helluva trick Luis. I was inspired, and as last year, picked up some great ideas and moves.

I couldn't answer all the questions I was asked so if people want to email me I will try to get back to them with the answers ... the contact link is on my website.

One more thing, as I have explained the reason in my blog, I am selling posters and books on eBay and my seller name is pauldaniels. The prices are all on there and some of the stuff is new-ish and some vintage/antique.

After our amazing trip to the best magic studio setup in the world, now I am inspired to clean out my workshop!

Best wishes

9. Remarkable Magic #44 - Nick Lewin
--------------------------------------------
Message by Nick Lewin (US)

A brief 'Hullo' from the road..

Greetings from the middle of a very hectic seven-day tour of the Mediterranean, with a very brief note this week. Very little time to think let alone get my computer humming!

I wanted to ask for a little input from our readers about a future project that I am putting into action in upcoming issues of Magic New Zealand. While it isn't drastically different from columns I have previously written, it is significantly different in the way I will be researching, writing and tackling it.

I have written at some length over the past six and a half years about my friends, mentors and influences in magic. I recently did some thinking about a few of the truly iconic magicians that I have met briefly but whose influence on me was less profound, simply because I wasn't in the right place at the right time. I feel that this needs to be addressed.

Right at the top of this list are two wonderful English magicians that I want to write about, David Berglas and Paul Daniels. Mr. Berglas was one of the magicians that I remember most vividly watching on TV when I was growing up, however I never had a chance to see him performing live or even to meet him in person. As a young man, it was impossible not to be influenced by this powerful and dramatic performer.

Paul Daniels was a magician that I heard a great deal about from Ken Brooke. Ken was always supremely confident that Paul would become a tidal wave in the world of comedy magic. How right he was! Leaving England in early 1974, I missed the gigantic force of nature that Paul became, with his amazing contribution to the English magic scene. How many magicians must have been launched due to Mr. Daniels groundbreaking TV shows?

Arriving in Los Angeles, I had missed some really inspiring early TV appearances by Mark & Nani Wilson. I certainly didn't miss or underrate the huge influence of their network TV series, 'Magic Land of Allakazam.' Mark and Nani's live and television appearances have affected and inspired entire generations of magicians over the years. Like Paul Daniels, I have met Mark and Nani on various occasions but certainly wouldn't feel comfortable in implying that I know them well enough to describe them as friends.

This all makes it a really great challenge to me as a writer, to research and contribute a written work about these three iconic giants of magic. It will require more research and study than I normally devote to my columns! I would like to get to the heart of their gigantic influence over several generations of my contemporaries. Are there any other performers that I should include in this ongoing project? I know there are, and would love your input in adding to my list.

I don't foresee this being a weekly series of articles, however I would like to be able to add them on a regular basis to my writing in Magic New Zealand. I also plan to add photographs and memorabilia and turn these initial sketches into fully-fledged articles. That would give me a real sense of accomplishment.

Who are the magicians, who motivated and inspired you? Drop me a note at
nicklewin1@mac.com and give me your thoughts if you would, I would really appreciate it.

10. Why Attend A Convention - #267 - Kyle Peron
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kyle Peron (US)
magic4u02@aol.com
http://www.kpmagicproducts.com
http://www.facebook.com/perondesign

With the tremendous amount of conventions being held each year all over the world, why attend one? What is in it for you and what should you get out of it? This was a question I found myself asking after attending the S.A.M. National convention in Las Vegas.

Certainly there are many reasons to attend a convention and we each have our own. Some go for the talent that is brought in. Some go for the shows being held and yet others go for the dealers and the lectures.

I personally feel what draws folks to attend a certain convention over another is location and talent. These 2 main areas seem to be what brings attendance numbers up.

People want to be with talented folks and learn from them as well. Location makes a difference as it impacts costs and allows families to decide if it can become a vacation that is of interest to all members.

But are any of these reasons really at the heart if why you should attend and what you can get out of it? Sure the talent is great and the dealers important. Location does make a difference. However, I would like to think there's a deeper reason that can really make a difference.

Why do I attend? Friendship. It is as simple as that. The magic fraternity should be all about friendship and comradery. There is just something special about seeing old friends and getting a chance to meet new ones.

I gain so much out of just talking with someone over lunch. I learn so much from jam sessions around tables. It is all the things that go on outside of the schedule that impacts me the most.

Never forget the older folks that are at these conventions. So many people do not give them a second thought. Many never talk to them or even ask them how they are doing.

What we fail to realize is that this older generation set the path for which we follow. We follow in their footsteps. Many of these folks know much more then you would ever think. Their wealth of knowledge is staggering and they are dying to tell anyone who simply asks it of them.

If you see someone sitting alone, go over and sit next to them. Introduce yourself and find out a little about them. I guarantee you that you will experience an amazing thing. The friendships that develop is the real magic of conventions.

Friendships that develop can last a lifetime. You certainly can learn a lot in books and at magic lectures. But shouldn't we also have the ability to learn and share from each other?

I can personally tell you that some of the best information I ever received was simply from having the ability to ask. How amazing it is to be able to ask someone something and receive information back?

The brotherhood of magic is something that is very special. However, many do not take it seriously. Many folks forget about the people around them or feel they have to hide and guard everything they learned. Why?

What is stopping you from being able to be a friend to someone else? Conventions are a gathering of magicians and entertainers who share a deep interest just like you do. Why not share thoughts and ideas with folks who can give a different perspective.

The next time you attend a convention, make sure you realize what is truly most important. Have fun at the shows. Learn from the lectures. However, take time to be a friend to someone else. Share ideas and learn to listen to what others have to say. I think if you do, you will find attending conventions to be an amazing experience.

Message by Anthony Darkstone Brook - Europe/USA

AD: You have been writing a column in M-U-M for some time now and it is filled with the most wonderful stories from your past and the many great people you write about . naturally, you must have some truly wonderful memories . is there a story you would like to share ..

GS: One in particular .there are loads of stories. too many to tell here. Thanks to John Moehring ( former M-U-M Editor ) I did the Dean's List column limited to one topic at a time. I prefer to ramble as a diary which it is now. Perhaps I'll do a piece on how I met you and your wife in Portugal. I still recall the great evening having dinner on a river boat in the harbor. We arrived from Lisbon, and when we got to the ship, you were already on board with a bottle of Port Wine.

AD: He! He! Yes that was fun .. And it was a good Vintage too. and hey! George I brought you another vintage when I visited with you and Aunt Nina in New York. You are costing me a fortune!! Just kidding, a pleasure always . a joy to know that you have good taste and that you have an appreciative palate. Now tell me... you are well known for Corporate Magic and indeed your appearances at many venues all over the world but I heard that you started in showbiz as a Ventriloquist. What's the full story on that?

GS: I was always a magician, first. But as a kid Abe Hurwitz loaned me a vent doll for a show and told me I was to do vent. He said it was easy. He gave me 3 rules :-

1- Pretend the puppet is real,
2- When the puppet speaks change your voice.
3- Speak without moving your lips.

Actually that's all there is to it. The corporate and trade shows came many years later.

AD: You gave me a fine signed Poster when I stayed with you in Brooklyn, New York and that Poster exuded an air of Magic all of its own . how did a Comedian/Ventriloquist conquer the Corporate and Trade Show Market as a Magician?

GS: After getting married and starting to raise a family. I needed a "real" job. Magicians in show business did not always work regularly. My cousin offered me a job in his electronics firm and I bought and sold electron tubes which were government surplus.

I became Purchasing Agent and it allowed me to do weekend shows and still have a regular salary to live on. When I became Vice President I was able to take long lunch breaks and could visit the Rossoff magic table a few times a week. One of my duties was to arrange our exhibits at a yearly trade show. That's when my eyes were opened to the possibilities of combining magic and sales.

13. Dedicated To Peter Reveen, Master Magician
--------------------------------------------
Message by Paul Stone (US)

The Innovention Convention which is taking place at the Gold Coast Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas from September 30 - October 3, is unlike ANY other Magic Convention.

Dedicated to Peter Reveen, Master Magician, world famous Hypnotist and formerly Lance Burton's Manager, and who is now suffering severely from Alzheimers, the Innovention will feature many of Peter's friends who will be appearing to give him their support.

Already confirmed are ... The Great Tomsoni & Co, Amazing Johnathon, Jeff Hobson, Christopher Hart, Farrell Dillon, Armando Lucero, Paul Vigil, Ben Stone, Scott Alexander, Fielding West, Michael Goudeau, Michael Holly, Bill Smith, Kyle & Mistie Knight, Bob Kohler, Seth Kramer, with more top class performers still to be announced. The Innovention will also be honouring Circus legend TIHANY, with a
'Lifetime Achievement' Award.

What makes the Innovention so different is that we are limiting numbers to around 200 attendees, who will enjoy unique access to all the performers, and excellent seats for all the Workshops, Lectures and Shows. So, you'll be close to everything!

Virtually all the Workshops and Lectures will be presented for the very first time, and the intimate Gold Coast Showroom is ideal for watching all the innovative sessions, as well as the fantastic line-up of talent who will be appearing in the Cabaret Shows.

To make it even better we are going to continue to offer the Special Discounted Registration price of $245 ($100 off the regular Registration) until we sell out. After that, there will be no more tickets!

We are also offering a limited number of Teen Registrations at just $100!

The Gold Coast is located just off the Las Vegas 'Strip' and next to the Rio, and we've negotiated an unbeatable Innovention accommodation rate of $40 per room per night for a Premium room.

So consider this ... a brilliant line-up, an intimate venue with great value accommodation, terrific choice of restaurants including a 24 hour TGI Friday's for late night sessions, 8 Workshops / Lectures, 2 world class Cabaret Shows, and the best technical back up at any Magic Convention!

Throw in some surprise Las Vegas VIP's, and it all adds up to an unmissable and wonderful few days of magic!

14. Docc Hilford Finishes Nine Week Run In Mexico
--------------------------------------------
Message by Docc Hilford (US)

Almost headed home after a 2 month run in Cancun, Mexico. When I get back to the Docc Studios I have several Doccinars and new projects that will fly out.
But let's bask in the sun for a few days longer, shall we? And read what a local tourist mag wrote about the show...

July, 2012
Mentalist Docc Hilford is completing the final week of a nine week engagement of Cancun luxury resorts. His show, Docc Hilford, The Miami Mindreader, is unique brand of mentalism and has been a smashing success with both hotel guests and staff. The show is an interesting chain of events probably best describe by Donny Doyle of D&M Entertainment Agency, "That wasn't mentalism. That was fun!"

Docc performs many original pieces but in a way never previously seen. He reverses the mind reading process and lets the audience read his mind. In one particularly stunning demonstration, Hilford asks a woman from the audience how far off a volunteer will be from a secret target number. The volunteer guesses Hilford's number and misses it by three. But it's exactly how far off the woman in the audience predicted.

In the show I saw, Hilford said he would take a chance. Another volunteer tore up a newspaper, keeping one little scrap for herself. Hilford went back into the audience to talk with a little girl. Apparently, she was instructed to think of a word that would be on the other side of the woman's scrap of newspaper. Although the girl imagined a strange word, WARP, she was correct. The headline on the woman's piece read, NUCLEAR TIME WARP.

The big final number involves a married couple, two books and an unforgettable demonstration of what Hilford calls, "Putting a thought into someone's mind." In the middle of the experiment, Hilford points to people and reveals their names, birthdays and favorite colors without having spoken to them beforehand.

Hilford keeps the audience laughing and participating throughout the hour long program. This night had a capacity crowd that stood up for the final round of appreciative applause. Hilford's right when he suggests that the audience will remember what they see for years to come. Docc Hilford - The Miami Mindreader. Showing nightly in several resorts along the Cancun Mayan Riviera.

Peace,
Docc

Message by Gord Boyes (Canada)

Do you like Game Shows? I'm going to be running one in the style of Family Feud, called Magicians Feud. I'm looking for magicians willing to participate in a survey to get the answers for the game (ie - the top xx numbers to the following question).

Initially I'll be running the game at local meetings and/or conventions, so I would prefer to collect the answers from people outside of my area.

Participants will receive a survey monkey with 10 questions that should be answered without giving too much thought, as though someone has stopped you in the shopping mall. I would like to start with 30 questions so there will be 3 survey rounds, and may continue to be more.

If you're willing to help with this, please send email to survey@partygameshows.com

Your contact information will be use only for this purpose and will not be shared with anyone else.

Please forward this to magician friends so I can get the most data possible.

Thanks,
Gord Boyes
