Remarkable Magic #37 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message by Nick Lewin (US) Adding some texture and dynamics to your show. There are two simple ideas that I would like to discuss in this column, between the two they add some powerful tools to the performers 'bag of tricks.' These two subtleties are texture and dynamics and while closely related they are certainly not identical, instead they are complimentary in nature. Let's begin the old fashioned way, with a dictionary definition or two. Dynamics. In musical terms, 'The varying levels of volume of sound in different parts of a musical performance.' Using the word as a noun, a force that stimulates change or progress within a system or process. Texture. The quality created by the combination of the different elements in a work of music or literature. I am asking you to think about employing these two ideas into one step to improve your show. We will start with dynamics and I will 'tweak' the definition slightly, 'To use varying levels of volume of sound in different parts of a performance in order to create a force that stimulates change or progress within your show.' I watch a great many performers who never greatly vary the volume, pitch or pacing of what they say, and how they say it, during their show. They settle for a monotone effect that is similar to what is sometimes referred to as a 'conversational tone'. You can significantly improve the impact of your performance by making it a little more theatrical and a little less conversational. Don't be afraid to really highlight parts of your show by making your voice louder or perhaps letting it sink to a whisper. Each of these vocal deliveries has its own effect and impact on an audience. They can both draw special attention to what you are saying and the actions that accompany the words spoken. They can jolt an audience into attention or seduce them into silence, both very useful techniques. During my 50-minute show, I work hard at building the audience into loud responsive fits of laughter and then 'turning on a dime' and creating a momentary silence, which is all the more effective because of the dynamic range between itself and the unrestrained laughter that proceeded it. It makes for a much more interesting show. In my work I take this a step further and concentrate very carefully on the 'highs and lows' that my voice uses to convey my words. You can achieve an effect (or create a laugh) just by letting your voice rise or fall in tone, as well as in its volume. Before I begin any show I take five or ten minutes to explore the range of my voice. I perform vocal exercises to strengthen the upper and lower boundaries of my vocal range. How do you know what will work best for a specific phrase, punch line or statement? You 'mix it up a bit' and experiment as you perform your shows and see what works. The very worst that will happen is that you expose the audience to your larger vocal palette. If 'Variety is the spice of life' then variety must also be an excellent ingredient for a variety act! Nowadays it is commonplace for magicians to extensively videotape their shows and watch the resulting tapes to improve their show. This is great, however, the performer watching these tapes is often a great deal more aware of what he is doing than what he is saying---much less the subtleties of how he is saying it. As an organ the eye tends to influence us much more directly than the ear. It is possible to learn a huge amount about yourself as a performer by slipping your iPhone in your top pocket and making an audio recording of what happens during your show. There is an entirely different dynamic involved in the use of the eye and the ear and it starts to open your mind to potential improvements just by realizing this and isolating your vocal performance, While you are listening to this audio recording take the opportunity to notice, AND WRITE DOWN, every superfluous statement or words you use. You will be shocked by how much time you waste saying unnecessary things just to fill in time because of something you are doing. Is there a more economical way to choose your words that will allow you to create a more streamlined and effective presentation? Almost definitely and sometimes by filling that verbal time with a more carefully chosen and polished audio you will make huge strides as a performer. By carefully analyzing and improving the vocal dynamics of your performance you will have gone a great distance towards improving the overall texture of your show. Texture is the second word I began this column by defining and we will look at it more closely next week. Let me finish by saying that although I am choosing to illustrate my ideas about this topic using verbal examples, everything I am saying could, with minor changes, be applied to the material with which you are performing. If this is too abstract then I will happily add a third column with some examples and hints about putting these thoughts into application in this area. Let me know your thoughts. 'Cruise Magic 101: how to make a great living performing magic on a cruise ship'. It is a really great book with tips, tricks and powerful techniques for shaping your performing skills to include bookings in this flourishing marketplace. Scout Show Delays - #261 - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kpmagicproducts.com You show up to the scout event and before you get to the door you say a prayer. The prayer goes something like this... "Lord PLEASE let them start on time!." If you have ever done a scout event you pretty much know they are notorious for running late and never having you on at the time scheduled. A lot of this comes out of confusion on their part. This confusion comes from the fact that many folks are involved in various aspects of the event and a lot of times they do not get accurate ideas on how long things will take nor do they plan the schedule out in advance. However, you do not have to fight this battle every time out. There are things anyone can do to alleviate a lot of this headache associated with working scout events. Once you understand what usually takes place, you have a much better idea of how to communicate your information to the client. When communicating, I do not want to come off as demanding or pushy. Instead I am a solutions provider to them. The difference is that my suggestions to them for when I start actually helps them and enhances their banquet. They do not see it as a demanding entertainer. Instead they usually thank me for offering them a solution that just flat out works to their best interest. The schedule goes something like this: - Opening ceremony - flag presentation by scouts and introduction - Banquet dinner is served - tables go up one at a time. Perfect time to offer strolling magic here if you can. - Friends in Scouting - I always tell them to have the friends in scouting speech done as desert is being served. This usually is a means in which to have it taken care of while the parents and kids are still seated. - Show Starts - I have them make an announcement to bring the scouts and siblings up. They are also encouraged to sit with their dens and den leaders. - Award ceremony - Closing remarks - Clean up Now why is this a great schedule and how does this benefit them? Well first it simplifies the schedule and the flow makes sense. The idea is to always keep control and focus at all times. This schedule does that. If I do my show after dinner but BEFORE the awards, I am keeping the kids attention. Dinner can be cleaned up in part as I am going on and performing. If I go on after dinner, there is no down time. Also, I have the scouts already seated so after my show is over, there is a natural progression right into the awards. The awards can start and the scouts are already there. Focus is maintained. I also feel the awards are the highlight of the evening or should be. The scouts hard work should be the biggest deal that evening and not my show. So I use this approach when talking with scouts and I get them to see the value in how this schedule benefits them. Once we come to an agreement, I have this spelled out in my confirmation agreement that goes to them. They agree upon the terms way in advance. A week prior to the event, I do a touch base with them to confirm last details and the schedule is bright up again. This has worked great for me over the years and I hope it does for you as well. I talk about it in more detail in the book which you can check out at http://www.kpmagicproducts.com if you would like more details. Thanks. As always if you have any questions, issues or concerns regarding this article, you can reach me directly at magic4u02@aol.com -------------------------------------------- 9. In Conversation with Eric Evans - Part 7 -------------------------------------------- Message by Anthony Darkstone Brook - Europe/USA ADB: Ah ! Yes Rome .. A wonderful city --- I can relate and understand why it appeals greatly to you. I'm sure you have many wonderful travel stories to share, but there is one involving you and Jim Cellini in Stuttgart, Germany .. EE: Oh yes ! .It was 1995 and I had just delivered the illustrations for his book in Zürich and not a week later ran into him on the pitch in Stuttgart; we were standing next to a display of flashing l.e.d. pins. The display of lapel pins was part of a retail kiosk and Jim was attracted to the flashing LED lights inside the pins that the vendor was selling. Rocco had just sent Jim a few D'lites so Jim was thinking, creating. Anyway, at one point the vendor turned to speak with me, during which time Jim acted like he took one of the pins and put it in his pocket, at least that's what the man saw out of the corner of his eye. As I knew exactly what Jim had done; employed his D'Lite, I knew that he hadn't taken one of the pins from the display. But I also knew that the man had seen that very thing in the corner of his eye. A few seconds later, the fellow asked me, "is he taking my pins?" As I laughed, I assured him that Cellini wasn't stealing from him, but I didn't know what to say otherwise; I couldn't tip the D'lites. So I just laughed even more at my quandary. ADB: Great mischief , love it .. as my close pals know I revel in it . but there's an even funnier story behind that ..isn't there ? EE: Ah Yes!!!!!! ..you mean why Jim was in Stuttgart in the first place . well. in his later years, Jim stuck around Switzerland for the most part. Moving to America for a few years to lecture and produce his DVDs was a brief exception. In addition, Jim went to Germany in 1995. Why. I'm not sure. But I do know that when he tried to re-enter Switzerland, the authorities wouldn't let him back in. I asked Marianne, his wife, why the authorities wouldn't let Jim back into the country and she said she didn't know why; the authorities wouldn't tell her. When she asked them all they would answer was "you know why!!" Years later, when I was visiting Jim during what turned out to be the last months of his life, she recounted a story to me that I realized was the reason they wouldn't let him back in. In 1993, Jim's school, "Der Zauber Zentrum" (The Magic Center) closed. It was in an old industrial building that was being torn down by the city to be replaced by condominiums. Well Jim had quite a few students there over the years and one of them wanted to do a bird act. With that aim in mind, Jim had acquired about 10 doves, training them for his student. As it turned out, the student decided not to do the act. So, Jim and Marianne continued to look after the doves even after they had moved out of the school and into an apartment. As you well know, doves "coo" constantly, so being in an apartment they "housed" the birds on their balcony. That, apparently, bothered the neighbors (the Swiss, after all, love their quiet) so the Police were eventually called in by a disgruntled neighbor. When the Police arrived, Jim met them at the door, wondering what the problem was. They informed him that the noise the birds were making was disturbing his neighbors and that he needed to get rid of them. Jim said "ok", and with that he walked out onto the balcony, opened the cage and released the birds. The Police were falling all over themselves to stop him, but by the time they reached Jim, all the birds had flown away out of sight. "What have you done, why did you do that?!" they asked. Jim simply replied that they had wanted him to get rid of the birds, so he did just that. As upset as they were, I'm surprised that they didn't haul Jim away to jail right then and there. Nevertheless, they left after a few minutes visibly upset that Jim had committed such an egregious crime!!! Of course, doves being doves, after about 15 minutes, the birds flew right back to their "home" safe and sound. But by that time the Police had left and I'm sure, returning to the Police Station, wrote up a report about Cellini for "cruelty to animals". One thing is for sure, Cellini knew doves. Cellini also knew mischief . I'm sure he did what he did just to put one over on the Police. It was just too bad his little joke came back to bite him a couple of years later, as for a while he was legally considered "persona non grata" in Switzerland. So now you know why the Swiss refused Cellini entry back into the Country all those years ago. End of Part 7 -------------------------------------------- 10. July 2012 Issue Of Genii -------------------------------------------- Message from Richard Kaufman - Editor Genii Magazine The July 2012 issue of Genii, the oldest and largest independent magazine in magic, is now in the mail and viewable online in its entirety for free to all subscribers. Our digital edition gives you the entire magazine at no charge and includes much supplemental audio and video. * On our cover this month is Miguel Angel Gea from Spain. Miguel is a gentle giant, one of the "Fat Brothers" along with Dani DaOrtiz and Christian Engblom. A student of both Ascanio and Tamariz, Miguel has developed his own path and is a master of coin and card magic. And you can see just how good Miguel is because if you've subscribed to the paper version of Genii, you'll received a free DVD courtesy of Luis de Matos and the Essential Magic Collection which is putting out Miguel's new DVD set Essence; if you're reading the digital Genii, then you'll find four "watch" buttons spread throughout the article that will give you access to a trailer for the DVD set, then you'll see Miguel performing and explaining three of his routines. David Britland chronicles the life of this burgeoning magic star in this issue. * Who can pack more wisdom into a mere 1,000 words than most people in 10,000? A person who rarely speaks . Teller. This month I'm very pleased to bring you a piece originally written for Smithsonian magazine that encapsulates a tremendous amount of magic theory into two pages. Read, reread, think, do. * An unusual exhibit, the History of Magic in Chicago, hands-on as much as history, recently opened at the Chicago History Museum and Danny Orleans, one of the technical consultants, interviews the Director of Curatorial Affairs for the museum, John Russick. Readers of the digital edition will find a video to accompany the article. Look for the "watch" button on p.74. * With the appearance of Juan Tamariz at our 75th Anniversary convention, the master is much on everyone's mind. In this month's "Genii Session," Roberto Giobbi reports on some of the valuable lessons he learned from his mentor at a workshop given at the Swiss Magic Convention in Baden 2007. * Yes, another Spanish cardman! Dani DaOrtiz! In "DaOrtiz a la Carte" this month he explores some theories about Dai Vernon's "Triumph," chaos, and shares some sneaky related techniques. We have three videos to accompany the article. * Sometimes what seem to be the simplest techniques are often the most difficult, and two columnists tackle the Double Lift this month. David Britland shares a new method in "Cardopolis," and Aaron Fisher concludes his series on basic card technique with Part II of his excursus on this ancient yet ever-challenging sleight. * The memoirs of Al Cohen return this month, along with Al himself, who relates the bizarre tale of the Vanishing Mr. Gray. * And speaking of Psycho, the amazing false automata (just like the Wizard of Oz, it's the man behind the curtain, you know), this month John Gaughan takes a look at the little fellow who originally belonged to Harry Kellar, then Houdini, and now rests Zen-like in the corner of his museum. * Jon Racherbaumer, David Acer, and our critics wrap up the issue-notably, Jamy Ian Swiss whips out his intellectual toolkit and disassembles Alex Stone's controversial new book, Fooling Houdini: Magicians, Mentalists, Math Geeks, and the Hidden Powers of the Mind. Those reading the digital edition will be able to watch a video of Slydini on French television in 1960 courtesy of Christian de Miègeville. This is about 12 years before I met Slydini and first saw him work and he is at the height of his powers. We also have very fine audio columns from both Max Maven and Jon Racherbaumer. Max is currently in New York starring in his Off-Broadway show Thinking in Person and he discusses its challenges and changes (tickets available here: http://www.maxmavenoffbroadway.com/Max_Maven_Off_Broadway/Home.html); Jon Racherbaumer revels in the spoken word and the ancient art of storytelling. A Couple Of Solutions To The Magic "Drawer Liner" Problem -------------------------------------------- Message by Tony L. Lewis (US) Dear Fellow Magicians, Having practiced the art of magic for about 70 years, I acquired a fair number of "drawer liners" along the way. As you are all aware, the trick that you finally receive often turns out to be a great disappointment for a variety of reasons. About five years ago I joined the Magic Café. After I made the required 50 postings to its various forums, I was eligible to sell my used magic in the Let's Make a Deal section with no commission to pay. Of course you could also try Ebay, but there a commission is definitely subtracted from your sale. As I netted a substantial amount from my Cafe sales, I used much of the proceeds to purchase some pricy coin gaffs that I could never have afforded otherwise. It's interesting to note that after making numerous sales in this manner, there was no noticeable dent in my magic collection. I also received a second great benefit from the Café. Whenever I now contemplate buying a new effect I google its name followed by "Magic Café." This lets me view one or more forums in which the trick's pros and cons are discussed by several of my peers, some of whom are highly experienced magicians. You do not have to be a member of the Café to view these forums, but you must be a member to contribute to them. Once you have made 50 postings, you are entitled to attend "Secret Sessions" in which the workings of a trick are discussed in much greater detail than they are in the lower level forums. Using this technique has cut down my disappointments by well over 90%. When I occasionally do make a mistake, I sell it off in the Lets Make a Deal forum. Yes, a loss is involved in such a move, but at least it's not a total one. Best regards, Tony L. Lewis Tonylew1@sbcglobal.net -------------------------------------------- 12. Magic Collection For Sale -------------------------------------------- Message by Lance Rich I've been asked to pass along some information from a friend who is thinning out his magic collection. I've seen many of these items in person and they are pretty impressive most were purchased over the years through Martinka's. The collection includes Marvyn and Carol Roy's Eiffel Tower production, numerous unique Houdini items and so forth. He is selling over 30 items in all. He's set up a website with photos and descriptions of each item: http://best-collectibles.com/ Perhaps some of your readers will be interested in some of these items. ------------------------------------------- 14. Invisible Lodge Scholarship Winner Announced! -------------------------------------------- Message by Roger Miller (US) My name is Danny Braff and I am a young magician from Flemington, New Jersey. I am 15 years old and I have been interested in magic since I was 7. I am the Vice President of The Society of Young Magicians, Chapter #69, The Bob McAllister Assembly In New York City. I am interested in comedy magic and my top favorite living magicians are Lance Burton, Michael Finney, Penn and Teller, and Gazzo Ozborn. My first magic trick was The Ball and Vase. It came from a Houdini Magic Shop magic kit. My grandpa bought the magic set in Las Vegas, and instead of doing what most people would do, which is give the whole set to their grandchild, my grandpa gave me one magic trick from the set each time I saw him. Because of that I didn't just open the set and forget about it 1 week later. I was always looking forward to seeing him to learn a new trick. The type of gigs I have done are restaurants, birthday parties, preschools, and charity events. I would love to win the $500 scholarship so I can go to Tony Spina and Eric Citron's Magic Jubilee (http://www.magicjubilee2012.com). The convention is from August 24th- 26th and is in Clinton, NJ. Going to this convention would greatly help improve my magic. Also, Michael Finney, who as I said is one of my favorite magicians, will be there, so I will be able to meet him in person for the first time. This convention will help me in many ways. One of the ways is it will improve my self confidence because I will learn more social skills by socializing with other magicians in addition to pros including Michael Finney, Johnny Thompson, and Shawn Farquhar. I will also learn a lot from the lecturers including metal bending from Banachek, which I have been trying to learn. Also, I have an egg bag and have been trying to get good at it for a long time but it still needs a lot of work, so Johnny Thompson's lecture on the egg bag will help me a lot, given that he is one of the best at it of all time. All of the other lecturers will help me in other ways as well. Last, but definitely not least, it will be my first convention that is more than one day so I will be very happy about that. Thank you for your time. Magical Wishes, Danny Braff ------------------------------------------- 15.
