Obit For Edd Patterson - Children's Entertainer -------------------------------------------- Message by William V. Rauscher Edward S. Patterson Edward S. Patterson, 92, of Shrewsbury, New Jersey and Bristol, Rhode Island, died May 13, 2012. Edd was known professionally as Edd Patterson, The Magic Artist. He had an illustrious career as a children's entertainer, presenting stage programs in schools for many decades. His programs were endorsed by thousands of school administrators and parent groups throughout the eastern United States. Edd's live school shows for young people numbered more than 18,000 programs, and in sheer numbers equaled or surpassed most other performers of his time on the American platform. He was considered an entertainer with an educator's point of view by teachers, administrators, moms and dads; his presentations won the unqualified approval of young audiences from Connecticut to Florida. Edd was noted for his fine publicity material, personally designed for each new season. His numerous new programs each year, along with his props, employed the finest artistic quality. Edd's career began as a young boy when he worked as an assistant to Don Rose, and continued with his own large stage show until he eventually dedicated his life to children's entertainment. His shows always included chalk drawings, puppetry, magic, music, and (often) sand paintings. In 2008 he was the subject of the book Edd Patterson: A Lifetime of Magic and Art, by William V. Rauscher. During World War II Ed served in the Army Air Corp. as historian and entertainer. Stationed in Kearney, Nebraska he hosted a popular variety show radio program called "Party Time on the Army Air Base." During his retirement, painting scenes and still life in water color, and caring for his dog Sandy and his cat Rosie, became an important part of his life. Edd especially enjoyed attending the Yankee Gatherings and the IBM Conventions, two important magic events. In the IBM he held the position of Order of Merlin - Excalibur. Edd will be sadly missed by his family and friends in the magic community. He is survived by his wife Virginia, daughters Donna and Susan, Susan's partner Taki, and grandchildren Amanda, Brendan and Connor. A memorial service will be held in September. In lieu of flowers donations may be sent in his name to the Bristol Animal Shelter, 10 Minturn Farm Road, Bristol, RI 02809. Remarkable Magic. #35 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message by Nick Lewin (US) Gary Hunter: Master of illusion and emotion. Part One. The parting of the path always fascinates me: magician or ventriloquist? Gary Hunter faced this decision early on and decided to make a choice in favor of ventriloquism rather than continue dividing his interests. The fact he made an excellent choice is amply attested to by his long and highly successful career as a 'voice thrower'. The tipping point for Gary in deciding his future career was watching a performance by the late, great Edgar Bergan. He gained a great deal from his other interest though. Hunter's act gives more than a hint at how well life would have worked out for him if his choice had been to devote his attentions to the magical arts. I have never seen a ventriloquist who creates quite such a subtle and effective impact in his show by adding illusion and misdirection to his professional arsenal. It is highly impressive the way he creates, changes and shifts focus to achieve his goals throughout his performance. Gary closes his show with a genuine tour de force, as his husband and wife characters 'Mr. & Mrs. Tweed' review their lives together and reaffirm their love and connection with each other. As their mutual feelings create a humorous and emotionally charged, finale to the show, Gary all but disappears from view. Not a bad piece of magic, and one that pays big dividends in its application. Hunter sets things up, and then has the wisdom to allow his creations to get the job done on their own. Having seen Gary perform many times I can tell you, it is frequently the case that audiences who were laughing uproariously moments before are suddenly and surreptitiously wiping a tear from their eyes as the show makes its emotional arc felt. I recommend any performer who has a chance to do so, to catch this piece of 'ventriloquial theatre' and watch his casual expertise. Last year Gary produced a superb documentary at the 2011 International Ventriloquists Convention in Fort Mitchell, Kentucky. I was been lucky enough to see some of the footage from this documentary and it is really great. As well as featuring such big name ventriloquists as Terry Fator, Jeff Dunham and Jay Johnson, however It captures the feeling and spirit amongst all the attendees at the event. Not just the famous, but also the not so famous, and in equal part the youngsters who may well become the 'next' Jeff Dunham. The reasons and stories of those present at the convention vary greatly, and the documentary does a wonderful job in displaying the wealth of diversity in the attendees. Like any really good documentary you learn about the subject matter, and it answers some questions that you hadn't even thought about asking. Also featured in the documentary are two more of my friends Don Bryan and Mark Merchant, who are both wonderful performers. Gary Hunter can also be seen performing a segment of his wonderful 'Mr. and Mrs. Tweed' routine. The focus of the convention last year was to pay tribute to a living legend in ventriloquism Jimmy Nelson, who was celebrating his 70th year in show business as a ventriloquist. It was Nelson's 'how to' record albums and personal encouragement that fired the spark and mentored the careers of numerous ventriloquists. It is touching and instructive to see the camaraderie that his shadow has cast among so many younger performers including the superstars I mentioned above. Watching the top pros like Fator and Dunham share their enthusiasm with youngsters, as they give tips and encourage the newcomers, is beautifully captured and cuts to the heart of how a convention can affect and inspire all those present. I wish Gary would bring his team to a magic convention and capture as rich an overview of the magic world as he did in this documentary, I believe it could provide just as rewarding an experience to the viewer. Gary has been a highly sort after entertainer in the cruise market for many years and now balances a unique double position as a featured entertainer and a cruise director on the 'Crystal Serenity,' one of the most prestigious cruise ships in the world. In this position he works with many of the world's leading professional variety acts and Gary was kind enough to share his thoughts about the business of entertaining an audience. In a 30 minute video interview (which I will be eventually be posting on my blog site) Gary gave me a really fantastic 'Five Golden Rules' list, based on his experience. I am going to be detailing next week in part two of this column. I consider his advice to be invaluable to any magician wanting to improve his performance and I am delighted to be able to share it with our readers. Stay tuned! Talking about being delighted, I am just two weeks away from the release of my new book, 'Cruise Magic 101: how to make a great living performing magic on a cruise ship'. It is a really great book with tips, tricks and powerful techniques for shaping your performing skills to include bookings in this flourishing marketplace. It was such a fun and simple concept that always got huge laughs and fun from audiences who saw him work. I believe the effect is still available these days through David Ginn and you can also make your own if you know how. I wanted to create a routine that was different and unique. I wanted something that better fit my personality and get more interactions. This is what I came up with and I would like to share it with all of you. I think the idea I came up with was that you need to build the routine up since the basis of the effect is so simple and short. It needs to be well rounded to add impact to it. Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, cat's dogs and even frogs.. I am here today to introduce to you the world's coolest performing trio. These guys are so cool they sing and do magic tricks and today they are my guest right here on this very stage. So if we all give them a very big clap let's see if we can bring them out... Ladies and gents.. I'd liked to introduce to you... 3 Frog Night (take off of 3 dog night). You motion to the table but nothing happens. um hmm maybe we need to be a little louder and clap more so they hear us. You do it again and still nothing. You says you are going to check back in the dressing room and will be right back. You go behind table as if talking to the guests. You state.. hehehe well they are not coming out until they get their fanfare introduction music. you play a CD or tape of some sort of funny musical intro with a drum roll. Still nothing. You state.. oh this is real silly but they said they are not coming out unless the girl in the front row gives them the lead singer a big kiss on the nose. Kids laugh and you get one to agree. You do it again and finally bring them out one at a time. Each of them wearing a little cape. =) have the girl give the frog a kiss. Then maybe say... hmm I would have thought he would have turned into a prince by now. Oh well. Well here they are 3 Frog Night. the world's coolest frog singing and magic trio. They are the coolest because they are the ONLY singing and magic frogs. Well they want to sing to you their hit single ... "I love you.. even your warts." but they have a problem. You see they can never ever figure out just who is the lead singer and who should be the backups. This can lead nicely into the monte part of the trick. get a kid to come up and dress them up as the frog's stage manager. Give them a big scarf and funky glasses to wear. It is the kid's job to have a rehearsal and determine which is the lead singer and which sings the best and to find the lead singer. you perform the monte part of the effect and throw in some funny frog jokes like... oh you know why he could not speak? He must have a frog in his throat. etc. It should get a few laughs. Finally the kid gets it right and is therefore made the official manager of the frogs for the day and you present them with a small manager certificate for them to take home with them as a souvenir. I hope this gives you an idea how this could be routined. It is not fully fleshed out but you get the basic idea on how you can build upon this and take a simply effect into a totally new direction of creative thinking. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you. In Conversation with Eric Evans - Part 4 -------------------------------------------- Message by Anthony Darkstone Brook - Europe/USA ADB: I echo your comments about the need to explore and define those underlying principles that make good Magic work ..it is good that we have a few fellow thinkers in getting this message out. If we do not value and respect our Art how can our audiences? Well, that is one of the reasons you wrote the book . EE: Yes Tony, it is. Again, good fortune struck and I met Nowlin Craver, who later became my co-author in an online magic chat room. A core group of us, from that chat-room got together in Missouri to put on a Dinner Theater show at the beginning of 2000. When I met Nowlin, I was reading Sun Tzu's Art of War. With his encouragement I began to incorporate Sun Tzu's teachings into a small booklet I had written about street performing. I began to search the literature for other parallels. It wasn't long after that that I found The 36 Strategies, or, The Secret Art of War. One the great things about working with Nowlin on our book, was that he consistently helped me say focused. I wanted to include lots of quotes from additional sources to add weight to the text but he helped me realize me that it was better to remain concise and consistent. Like your Samurai analogy that you referred to early. You yourself understand Musashi's Way and will therefore know what I mean when I say that limited movements often bring greater results. ADB : Well, in a word - Yes! I am personally fond of The Art of War and have great admiration for the manner in which you have effectively brought Sun Tzu's principles in to play and interconnectivity to the performance of Magic .. Tell us a bit of the book and for those who have not yet read it, describe this relationship between the two Arts. Of course, I don't expect you to paraphrase your book but share the concept in a broad overview citing an example or two .. EE: Well, to me Sun Tzu is just the beginning. He was the one that convinced me that Magic was War, complete, total war. So I began to read Napoleon, Frederick the Great, Baron de Jomini, Vegetius, Clausewitz. And on all of the important points, they agreed, at least as much as men of different backgrounds and times could. And, again for me, through their words I came to a deeper understanding of magic through their concepts of war. But as to the book, Sun Tzu said, the best General was one who won before he ever had to fight. S.W. Erdnase said something similar, but from a slightly different direction: "they should not suspect, let alone detect..." In other words, the battle is won before the fighting begins. That, I think, is the thrust of Nowlin's and my book, the underlying principles that make magic work, how to make you invincible as a magician. -------------------------------------------- 10. Bristol Day -------------------------------------------- Message by Mandy Davis (UK) It was a surprisingly sunny day but there was no time for the magicians to appreciate it. The Bristol Day of Magic was a day full to the brim with everything you could possibly want. Children's magic? We had the amazing Oscar Munoz from the US. Close up? Not only a show with Paul Gertner as its star, and featuring Oscar and Will Grey too, but a superb lecture from Paul too. Stage magic? Here was Pat Fallon from Ireland to lecture on that. With all this there was also a large dealer hall with lots of magic to buy and a junior workshop with Russell Levinson teaching torn and restored napkin and Pat Fallon demonstrating several different effects. That was only the daytime! The evening featured a fabulous gala show with Oscar, Pat, Romany, Steve Hewlett, Kockov, Martyn James to name a few! So the sunny day was wasted. But at least we didn't have to fight the rain! -------------------------------------------- 16. Story About A Magician In A Car Wreck -------------------------------------------- Message by Michael Night "Have a Magical Night." Written by Heather Mott It's a packed night at a popular bar, and the owner is frantically running around trying to squeeze in enough folding chairs to accommodate the sold out crowd. Everyone has shown up to watch popular comedian/magician/hypnotist Michael Night. He has once again brought his wildly entertaining show to town, and everyone is anxious for the evening to begin. Energetic music begins to pump through the sound system, and the crowd applauds loudly while Michael Night walks up and takes the stage. What most people don't realize is that as amazing as the show they are about to witness will be, they have already witnessed the most amazing feat of the night.Michael Night walking up to the stage on his own. The only sign that something may be amiss is the cane he uses to help him walk. It looks like a leg bone, from hip to toe, complete with a little shoe. Michael's career has been studded with accolades, his most recent being the runner up for Best Live Comedy in Ohio in 2011 (and he will probably receive the same honor this year as well). He performs a myriad of different shows ranging from children's magic acts to full comedy/hypnotist shows. Michael began performing at an early age and mixed his love of magic with comedy to create a highly amusing and intriguing experience. His personal struggles, however, are a different story all together. In December of 2010 Michael was at the end of a run of successful shows. Rather than stay in a hotel for another night, he decided to make the two hour drive home. The next thing he knew, he was drifting in and out of consciousness and joking with firemen, EMT's and First Responders as they were cutting him out of his vehicle (even commenting that the news crew at the scene were definitely NOT the press he needed). Then he passed out, and didn't wake up until a couple days later. Michael had fallen asleep 10 minutes from home, crossed two lanes of traffic, ran up an embankment and smashed his Blazer into the steel pole supporting a McDonald's sign. The doctors at the hospital told his family he had a 20% chance to live, and if he did, he would never walk again. Learning how to walk was no small endeavor, but to Michael it certainly wasn't the most challenging experience in his life. In August of 2008, his son, Stefen died of a brain aneurism. He was 16. Compared to enduring the loss of a child, learning how to walk again was nothing. There was still quite a way to go before that could happen, though. In the wreck Michael had broken both legs, five ribs, his right ankle and also suffered internal injuries. He went through seven surgeries before he was told his finances had run out, and had no other choice but to check himself out of the hospital, with a rod in his left leg and a cage on his broken right leg and ankle. He stayed alone at night and his sister helped to care for him during the day, changing his dressings and helping him around. After having the cage removed weeks later it was time for him to begin therapy. During his convalescence, Michael began to think about getting back up on stage. Thinking about getting his show back together helped him greatly, and when his friends from the magic community found out what had happened they came in droves to lend support and help. Upon hearing that his car had been looted during his wreck (literally robbed of half his show gear as he was unconscious in the front seat) his friends began sending him new tricks and props. Dirk Losander learned he had lost his floating table in the robbery and sent him a new one. He also had magicians such as Barry Mitchell, Eric Buss, Robert Baxt, Kerry Pollock, Michael Mosher and Tony Clark contributing to getting his act back together. He even received a donation from the Society of American Magicians, and was the guest of honor (in his wheel chair) at a fundraiser organized in his name. He was so overwhelmed by the graciousness, care and concern of his colleagues, friends, family and fans, and says their continued support is what helped keep him going every day. After another visit to the hospital and having to go have some metal removed, he began his rehab in earnest. Feeling tired and beat up every day was wearing on him, but he was still making jokes and planning his return to the stage. Sitting gave him plenty of time to think about his show. He found he couldn't stand feeling trapped in the wheelchair anymore, and started making himself walk again. He progressed from crutches, to a walker, and finally to his cane, which he calls "the coolest cane in the world." Today, he still needs at least two more surgeries, and has a long road ahead of him, but has performed at two fundraisers he committed to, one from his wheelchair! Since then he has also done two more shows that are more full style shows and is excited about doing more, and hopes to be able to add more to his act as his mobility increases. Michael says that he feels he is a much better performer now, since he has worked the whole show over and over in his head, reworking and thinking about every little aspect. He thanks fellow magician, Tony Clark, for his gypsy balloon trick that he performs at the end of his show. He tells his story and then uses the balloon to illustrate beautifully how even though he is broken, he won't be for long.
