Editor's Message -------------------------------------------- Pleased to say that Magic New Zealand has been upgraded and now back to normal. Over the past two weeks I thought Magic New Zealand had come to its end! My IPS unbeknown to me had changed their rules on how many e-mails can be sent out on an hourly bases. You can imagine how long it would take for 16,500 subscribe to receive their issue at 99 per hour!! Pleased to say that I have found another ISP that I will be using to send out Magic New Zealand. Also have upgraded to a new software package that will streamline all operating procedures. Remember if you have any magic news drop me a line: Editor@MagicNewZealand.com -------------------------------------------- 2. Criss Angel Altercation --------------------------------------------- Message by David Rogers Las Vegas Review-Journal An associate of Luxor headliner Criss Angel filed a police report Wednesday, alleging he was roughed up in the illusionist's office warehouse. Joe Monty, whose real name is Joe Safuto, told Vegas Confidential that Angel "flipped out" Wednesday during a disagreement over a magic trick. Monty, who gave his age as 52 and said he is about 5-foot-5, said he has been a consultant for Angel for years and endured his verbal abuse before. "But I draw the line at violence," Monty said in a telephone interview. Monty said he was bruised when Angel "bumrushed me out the door" about 4 p.m. Angel could not be reached for comment by deadline. "Video Of The Day" --------------------------------------------- Message by Walter Zaney Blaney walter@walterblaney.com Here is a daily website you may be interested in. Just sign up and you receive a free "Video of the Day", always a most interesting one. Often many are clips of some really great acts in show business ... both magic acts and variety acts. Some are clips from the top flight acts featured on the famous Cabaret Du Monde TV show in France. This show knows how to present an act in the best possible manner, with top flight staging values. They are also smart enough to include the well-deserved applause at the end of an act and not cut the clip the second the act ends. Just go to http://biggeekdad.com/video-of-the-day/ and sign on. I think you will be pleased. If it's not your cup of tea, just ask to be removed. But I know that good people run the site, and I have a lot of magic friends who subscribe and look forward to it each day. ------------------------------------------- 4. How Many Dealers Does It Take To Make A Convention Exciting? -------------------------------------------- Message by George Schindler (US) Every card dealer in Las Vegas makes his or her game exciting, as does every magic dealer at a Society of American Magicians convention, whether in Las Vegas or any other city. So far, twenty four (two dozen) have signed up for space, with more coming. You'll meet many regulars, plus a few new folks from the U.S. and abroad who will join us. If you haven't registered yet, now is the time to get the best seats at the Smith Center, for the galas. Take a sneak preview of the dealers and get an early look at their product lines. Go to http://www.magicsam.com/SAM2012/dealers.asp Then register on line for shows, contest acts, lectures, talks, young member events plus free tickets to the David Copperfield and Mac King shows. The hotel rates are low and the Fremont Street experience is just outside the door of the Golden Nugget hotel.. Do it now! (check it all out at http://www.magicsam.com/SAM2012/index.asp ) -------------------------------------------- 5. Remarkable Magic. #19 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message by Nick Lewin (US) Vegas Magic Theater Revisited. I took the opportunity to revisit 'Vegas Magic Theater' this weekend and see what was happening at Paul Stone's latest production in Las Vegas. It was also a chance to see an extended version of Jason Andrews's fine manipulative act which actually got me to budget my crazy schedule to include the visit. I was very glad I did. I (totally by accident) attended the Press Night event for the show recently. I am really no big fan of press nights or the way they introduce a show. The emphasis on the press corps, food & drink and celebrities in the audience often change the flavor and 'shape' of the actual show. I certainly found my second visit to the Vegas Magic Theatre to be a much more rewarding affair. We missed the opening close-up segment, which featured a 'Dueling Magicians' segment that seemed to be a huge hit. Given the success of the current breed of dueling pianists across the country this is a smart move. The very nature of the idea breathes fresh life into the concept of adding the close-up magic segment to the show. Another nice surprise was to see headliner Kevin James open the bill with a really great, intimate, low key and VERY effective set. In the comedy club world this is often referred to as a 'Boston Bill.' In the city of Boston, shows would usually open with the headliner hitting the crowd hard, before, introducing the rest of the show and then returning as the finale. It worked great. Kevin is a complex and gifted magical thinker and a great performer too. I personally thoroughly enjoyed watching him perform a scaled down set without any entourage or additional personnel involved. Kevin may just have returned from headlining a show at the Sydney Opera House, where I'm sure he featured many of his gloriously off-kilter and eccentric illusions, but this was 'Kevin James: Unplugged!' It really highlighted a very likeable, touching and vulnerable side to Kevin that was highly effective and extremely commercial. Kevin can achieve enormous results with just his 'presence' and a few small props, and did so with great aplomb and success. I will look forward to seeing what Kevin has cooked up for the new magic show at the Plaza Hotel 'Avant Garde.' I thoroughly enjoyed both his sets and they created a fabulous bookend effect to the evening. Ben Stone continued to impress as the host of the show. His singing adds a lot of texture and some nice razzle dazzle to the show. He has a great voice and a lot of charm, energy and onstage charisma. Oh, my wife took me for task last time I reviewed the show for not commenting how handsome he was! That is a comment I'd probably never, ever have thought to make, however, sitting flanked by two ladies (Susan and the irrepressible Karla Kwist from the Mac King showroom) I realized that this was indeed the case and that it was a huge plus point to the females watching the show! Aside from singing, Ben performed an excellent comedy sleight of hand routine featuring cards that worked very nicely indeed. The first time I saw him hosting the show his comedy magic was featured after another comedy magic act and suffered by the balance that this created in the show. On this occasion, veteran performer Tom Ogden appeared later in the bill and it was his turn to suffer from the similarities that always (myself, included) can follow from two comedy magicians appearing in the same bill for a lay audience. A verbal and a physical comedy magic show, in the same bill, might be a better balance in a comedy club format show such as this one. A good variety performer also makes a strong addition to the event. I am sure this is something that Paul will adjust accordingly as he continues his fine-tuning of the show. Just returned from work in China and Japan, Jason Andrews was a superb highlight in the center of the show. He performed his classic award winning manipulative show and it resonates with style, class and personality and drew very heavy audience response. It was great to see him add a new final segment to his show. This is not a performer who is going to be lost in the world of 8-minute acts for long! I have seen Jason perform his illusions and also his comedy magic show and they are both as effective as his award winning silent act. I hope the magic community will allow him to fully develop into the role of fully rounded performer. He has future magical superstar written all over him. Several times during the evening I heard him referred to as the next Lance Burton and that sells him short---we already have one Lance, but a fully developed Jason Andrews is going to create a stir all his own. To my mind, Jason could best be categorized (Yikes, I hate to ever do this, but I will) as the next Fred Kaps. Fred was a manipulative performer who developed and progressed into arguably magic's most sophisticated all round performer. I will continue watching Jason's ascendancy in the magic world with great interest. Catch his act now and enjoy watching him develop. A great evening, great acts and all the performers out onstage for a final bow - the professional way to close a variety show! Kudos to Paul Stone for his part in exposing Las Vegas to some new talent and old favorites, keep it up! Email me at nicklewin1@mac.com -------------------------------------------- 6. Strolling Magic for Scout Events - #244 - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com You may be wondering to yourself how you can possibly do strolling magic for a banquet style event aimed at scouts. Well this is actually something that is very easy to do and adds a benefit to the scout pack. Allow me to explain. There is always a time at the blue and gold where the tables are called one at a time to go up and get their food. This usually happens by calling up each den one at a time. This happens almost all the time. Now when it does happen, there are tables just sitting there waiting for their turn. This is dead time for them. So noticing this happens a lot, I figured there is a problem that I can try and solve and make a solution for. So, I started to offer to the scout packs strolling table side magic for the dinner hour. This is where, for an extra amount, I will help them to keep the tables entertained as they are waiting to go up and be called. I do some simple strolling magic that is both themed for scouting and fun for the kids and adults. It does not take me long to do and certainly does not add any real problems for me. I can easily bring my close up case with me and have more than enough to entertain the tables. I have had many cub pack clients love this concept and they latch on to it. For them, it solves a need or a problem and they see the fun and value in it. It also gives me the chance to get to know the audience and find my helpers ahead of time before the show starts. If I see a kid really interacting well but behaving themselves, they may be a perfect candidate for a certain routine I want to do in the show later on. So performing the strolling magic is also a great opportunity to really get to scope out the audience and find out who might be good as helpers. Now this could be booked as just a strolling gig at the event for those who prefer doing strolling magic over stage shows. It keeps the scouts involved, occupied and the perceived value of me increases in the eyes of the scouts and adults. Do not be afraid to offer the pack a strolling magic add on or simply strolling magic by itself. You always have to remember that you are there to provide solutions for the pack the best that you can. You cannot assume that every pack is organized and under control. Some are and they run it fantastic and the kids are well behaved. In some cases, the cub master has no idea what he or she is doing. This sometimes is just the case as they try and do the best that they can. If this is the case, this is YOUR time to shine and be a solutions provider to them. Who knows more about running events and entertainment than you do? If you perform a lot, then there is no reason why you cannot step to the front and help them to give advice and suggestions to make their event run smooth. If you speak up, they will listen to you. I often make suggestions to them and they thank me for it. If you would like more information on this topic or on how to work for any scout events, please see my book "Blue and Gold' at http://www.kpmagicproducts.com. Thanks. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you. Tony Brook in Conversation with Ray Parker #6 -------------------------------------------- Message by Anthony Darkstone Brook - Europe/USA ADB: Reads like a movie script. What a wealth of talent and experience. So tell us about the early years in Canada. RP: Thank you Tony for your kind words. My first job in Canada was singing in a restaurant with an organ and violinist accompaniment but soon I was getting work with Off the Record. In 1966 two things happened that really kicked of my Canadian career. I got my first acting role in a TV series called Magistrate's Court as a car thief . I also formed a show based on the British pub show format that worked very well for a North American audience which I named The Carnaby Crowd. This show has changed over the years and is now called British Music Hall, Palace of Varieties. In 1968 I went full time pro and toured as emcee, vocalist with a 4 piece band and comedian for a hypnotist show. The show opened on Vancouver Island that part of the tour concluded in a 10 day run at the McPherson Theatre. Then the financial backer fell out with the hypnotist and withdrew funding. The show was downsized, the band let go. Being under a 5 year contract I continued with the tour. Finally in Dawson Creek after being owed 6 weeks wages I was able to cancel my contract. I returned to Vancouver and resumed booking myself in night clubs, Legions, etc. ADB: This is when you love of characters was born from the necessity to stay in work . RP: Yes Tony. I acquired an agent and soon was fully booked. One specialty being, whenever my agent required a special character, I was always able provide it. I became an old prospector, a town crier, a secret agent disguised as an Arab named Ali Kadabra, a financial advisor, a river boat gambler, the oldest Canadian postie, etc. ADB: Your background in stunts and falls helped too. RP: Yes it did. It was during this time I incorporated a stunt in which I fell off the stage during the act, using my acrobatic skills, appeared to trip summersault and land on my back. I did this for many years, even on a Variety Club telethon, when host Ronnie Prophet, told the audience that I had been doing it at a venue he was working, to raise donations for the telethon. He asked me if I was prepared to do it off the stage of the Queen Elizabeth Theater from an extension built over the orchestra pit. It was the highest distance I had ever done that fall and required me to angle the fall, to miss the front row of the audience, but I agreed on the condition viewers sent in donations. I was fortunate everything went well and I pulled it off. ADB: You are well known for your one-liners which now have a great following on face-book ---myself included. Where does the inspiration come from? RP: Various sources but mostly from a keen observance of human nature. I am at the stage of my life when I truly can see the humor in most things. I am also a Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist. That helps. However, it is a separate part of my life. I do not perform stage hypnosis. End of Part 6 -------------------------------------------- 8. Broken Wand - Ken Krenzel -1926-2012 -------------------------------------------- Message by George Schindler (US) Ken Krenzel was born and raised on the Lower East Side of New York. At the age of seven he saw a marionette show at his school and, in his words, it started his " life-long and passionate love of magic and all things magical". As a youngster, Ken became a charter member of F.A.M.E. (Future American Magical Entertainers) run by Dr. Abraham Hurwitz , known as Peter Pan The Magic Man. This amazing group of young magicians would become major players in our magic world. * As Ken grew up he pursued the study of psychology in college and eventually earned a Ph.D. He was a Diplomate in the American Board of Professional Psychology. Ken had served for many years as Psychologist for the Board of Education in the City of New York where he eventually became a supervisor of School Psychologists. He was a member of the board and vice president of the Executive Committee of the New York Psychotherapy and Counseling Center before going into private practice. In his magic, he became well known as a leading exponent of expert sleight-of-hand with cards. He has published material in various magic journals: The Gen, Genii, MUM, Hugard's Magic Monthly, Phoenix, Hierophant, Kabbala, Epilogue, New Jinx, Apocalypse, and the Minotaur. His art has been featured in books like "The Card Classics of Ken Krenzel "in 1978. His 'Ingenuities" book is much sought after. He was always recognized as the "magicians' magician". In 1993 Ken was the Parent Assembly # 1 Society of American Magicians "Magician of the Year" and became its "Dean" in October of 2011. Ken was always a proponent of keeping the "secrecy" of magic and played a role in combating "exposure" of magic effects. He often mused that; "I never have to worry about falling into a second childhood. Magic has kept me in my first childhood." Longtime friend Rabbi Noach Valley officiated at the funeral where the "broken wand" service was performed by Dean George Schindler. *Ken's contemporaries were Howard Schwarzman, George Schindler, Albert Goshman Harry Lorayne, Jack London, Victor Sendax , Sol Stone, Jerry Bergman and Frank Garcia. He was also mentored by Ed Balducci and was befriended by Dai Vernon, Slydini, Cliff Green, and Charlie Miller. ** A full biography appears in the September 1993 M-U-M magazine. ------------------------------------------- 12. Help In Locating John Williams -------------------------------------------- Message by Bev Bergeron (US) Saw the notice in the last Magic of New Zealand from Barbara Lawton asking for help in locating John Williams. It seems that she was seeking information on Card Mondor whom she had met as a child when he was doing the Bozo show in Oz. Since I knew both of the gentlemen who were mentioned, Card from the 1950s when he was in the Spook Show business and later John when Card moved to Tasmania and teamed up with John Williams. John produced Card's book on magic as one of the very first electronic books. I have a copy of the CD as I wrote and told Barbara, but had lost contact with John a few years ago. A few days of emails back and forth and voila, John was found. Several of the Oz magicians got his email address to Barbara and me. If you want to contact him for a CD or other magical items his address is now: John@ezy-internet.com I also mentioned to Barbara and John that if she wanted to learn a lot about Card's early days in the States performing as a magician and "doctor" lecture for the famous Kroger Babbs - producer of "Trash Films" and the one that Card brought to Australia in the 1950s: "Mon & Dad," a must read is: "A Youth in Babylon" by David Friedman. It is selling on Amazon for about $25 right now. The book is a must for anyone wanting the real story of early motion picture trash films and some magic. Besides, Card Mondor is mention a lot as a spook show performer, but also as the "doctor" who lectured on sex after the movie was shown to a segregated male and female audiences. It also mentions the States' tour of Franquin, New Zealand's world famous hypnotist, and his problems later. A side note: I was in the Air Force then in Wichita Falls, Texas in 1951 when the Babbs organization had me sell ticket to the week shows. We sold thousands of them to Airmen and I got to see a lot of Franquin. Thanks to Alan Watson and his worldwide newsletter, another person has been served. ------------------------------------------- 13. 33rd Annual Abbott Close-up Convention -------------------------------------------- Message by Chuck The 33rd Annual Abbott Closeup Convention will be held March 9 & 10, 2012. David Boyd Selling Off His Magic --------------------------------------------- Message by Dave Boyd (Australia) Magic Mountain's Mr. Magic. My plans for a life after performing have just been shattered. I received some unexpected news from my doctor. It means I will have to give away my plans on making magic for sale etc. I will be placing my workshop and tools for sale by auction locally. The rest of my magic stuff that I have accumulated and what remains of my working props, books, DVD's etc. I will be selling off ASAP. These will range from small packet tricks, some brass stuff, Axtel Drawing Board through to A Dry Erase Mind Board from Pro Magic that I purchased at a Guy Bavil Lecture at Shaune Taylor's a year or so ago. It cost $800 and worth every cent. I will be letting it go for only $300. All items will be marked down to ensure I clear the lot. Anyone interested in getting details of what I have to sell, can email me on boyddp@hotmail.com. I hope you can help me in this difficult task of divesting myself of my last links with magic.
