Mark Wilson's Magic Circus -------------------------------------------- Published with the permission of Milt Larsen (US) Open To All Members Of The Magic Castle November 17: Mark Wilson's Magic Circus The Palace Of Mystery, 6:30pm November 14 to 20th celebrates the 40th Anniversary of the first airing of Mark Wilson's Magic Circus TV specials. On November 17, at 6:30pm (Please note the early start time, so the cast can be ready for the 8:30 Palace show) Mark Wilson, Nani Darnell, Greg Wilson, and many of the other people that were instrumental to the creation of these innovative shows will have a Castle Perk Interview/Discussion. So many elements of the way magic is presented on TV these days was actually pioneered and refined on the Magic Circus shows, sponsored by Pillsbury. If you don't know about them, then you should. If you do know about them, you will have a blast hearing the behind the scenes stories. Either way, you can't lose. If last year's 50th Anniversary of Allakazam was any indication, then this year's 40th Anniversary of Magic Circus should prove to be fun in a whole new way. The host of the evening will be Mark Nelson, the man that knows Mark and Nani's career history so well, it's as if he lived it himself! Come join us for a trip back to the 70s. ****If you would like to become a member of The Academy of Magical Arts (The Magic Castle) go to: http://www.magiccastle.com/about/membership.cfm for more details**** ------------------------------------------- 4. The Legend Of Bigfoot - Phillip Morris -------------------------------------------- Message published with the permission of Milt Larsen (US) Open To All Members Of The Magic Castle November 15: The Inner Circle, 8:00pm In 1967, Morris Costumes made and sold a gorilla suit to Roger Patterson and his partner, Bob Gimlin, which they used to film the great "Bigfoot" hoax, of a creature walking through the Bluff Creek National Park in northern California. Then in 2005, National Geographic contracted with us to not only make another costume for them, but also to act as a technical advisor for their "Is It Real" TV program on Bigfoot. Phillip will not only tell about this experience, but also talks about his work on ghost shows like The Dungeon of Death and The Dr Evil Ghost Show. -------------------------------------------- 5. Derren Brown Plans New York Shows -------------------------------------------- Message by Peter Reilly Derren is planning to take a theatre show to New York towards the end of 2012. Whilst, at this stage, we have no further details, we are asking if you would be interested in seeing Derren perform live in New York. http://derrenbrown.co.uk/blog/2011/11/york-state-mind/ -------------------------------------------- 6. Remarkable Magic. #09 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message by Nick Lewin (US) In response to some questions.. I have been delighted with the response after the mention in Magic New Zealand about the origin of the 'standing o' gag and plan to do similar pieces in the future. I was also amazed at the reaction to the limited release of my signature Linking Finger Ring routine. I have had a great many enquire about it and an astounding amount of purchases just from that announcement. If I may, I would like to take the opportunity to say a few more words about it and respond to some of the questions I was emailed. New Zealand's own Richard Webster, a mentalist and author I respect more than any other magician, was kind enough to send me the following quote about the routine, "Your version of the Himber Rings is hilarious, mystifying, and one of the closest things to real magic I've ever seen." As I suspected there are many people out there in the magic world who would like to add this truly reputation making piece of magic to their repertoire. Many people have bought rings but then 'hit a wall' when it comes to actually finding a strong routine. I can get you over that wall and save you many, many years in your learning curve to performing it. In the last 30 plus years I have developed a totally unique routine that, along with a handful of others, has earned me a fine living. The impact of the routine is achieved with a collection of linguistic and psychological subtleties that is not easy to teach. It requires enormous attention to detail in order to pass on the full routine. It is a truly stunning piece of magic and the impact on an audience is astounding. The effort both to teach, and to learn it correctly is well worth the detail and work involved. The routine that I am offering is presented with exactly that degree of detail. This limited edition of the routine will come complete with the Book, a DVD, a CD containing the correct royalty free music cues, and a 50 minute Skype or similar one-on-one learning session. It also comes with a numbered certificate of authenticity and full performing rights. I believe anything less would fail to do it justice. Only these 100 sets will have full television performance rights. I made my debut on American television with an early version of this routine on 'The Merv Griffin Show.' Merv described it as, "The most amazing piece of magic I have ever seen." I performed the fully-fledged routine on a cable special that aired on Comedy Central and it received an ACE nomination for excellence in cable broadcast. Those TV rights mean something! My performance of this effect at the Hollywood Foreign Press (the group who present the Golden Globe Awards) 'Tribute to Orson Welles' was another milestone in my career. The producers hired me to perform this specific routine because they realized it's amazing impact and decided it would be a fine tribute to Mr. Welles' love of magic. I followed Peter O'Toole in the event and preceded Jane Fonda. I would like to claim it was me they wanted, but it wasn't - it was this routine! I am limiting this package to 100 people and I am being very careful to make sure no single market has too many people performing the effect. You deserve that if you purchase the routine, just as every other purchaser deserves the guarantee of secrecy that needs to be signed to make the purchase. This routine is not for amateurs but the professional performer who will take the time to learn to present it in the correct manner. While not a complex routine from the sleight-of-hand viewpoint, it has a structure and a dialogue that needs to be studied very carefully. My package teaches you how to perform it with devastating effect almost anywhere at anytime. I am now able to say that the full routine will be assembled and ready for purchase by early spring of next year. I will soon be accepting firm orders and expect the entire publication to sell out very quickly. If you have a serious interest then let me know so that I can continue to keep you informed and up to date on the progress. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me. I am happy to answer specific questions if they are thoughtful and intelligent! Send me an email at nicklewin1@mac.com to keep in touch or to reserve your number and place amongst the 100 people who receive this package. -------------------------------------------- 7. Head Rest on Chair Suspensions - #233 - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com This is one area that I am pretty adamant about. I know folks think they need a head rest and that it solves a problem. The fact is that a head rest is never needed if the illusion is performed correctly and with the proper set up, proper positioning and proper patter. Let me clarify my strong opinion against the usage of a head rest. I perform this illusion literally hundreds of times every single year over the past 10 years or more. I probably perform this more than anything else I own. In all of those shows, I have not had a single kid complain about the head being a problem at all. The reason behind this is because of how I present the illusion, my routine and the psychology that is involved. Too many entertainers THINK that the child will be uncomfortable and so they go the route of a head piece thinking they are doing a favor. Instead they are killing the look and feel of how the illusion is supposed to come across. Another problem many performers have is that their patter is worded in such a way that it evokes a negative response in the child. Many folks will state things like, "don't be scared. Don't be nervous. Are you ok?" These types of patter gets the child thinking that maybe something is wrong or that they should feel that way. It is almost like telling a child not to touch a light switch. If you tell them not to, they tend to want to. So I am mindful of my patter and what I say to the child because it does make a huge difference. If any child is off center or not in the proper positioning, NEVER go on with the illusion. Off center and improper positioning should never happen. This should always be a part of the performer's safety checks and the understanding of balance points. If it is not correct, make sure to fix it before proceeding with the illusion. The head rest just goes against how the illusion is supposed to be presented. This is a suspension and many folks forget that. In a suspension the audience needs to see and feel like the person is suspended at some point. In the broom suspension illusion, that point is the arm pit. On the chairs, that point should be the neck of the child. With the head hanging gently down, this sells the illusion properly. It gives the natural appearance of the point at which the child is being suspended. Not only does this look proper, but it is the way the original illusion was designed. It just looks more natural and sells better to an audience. The head rest idea (as nice as it is to think you are helping yourself and the helper) takes away from the power of the illusion. It just looks awkward. With the head hanging gently down, it not only makes for a better illusion, but it serves a purpose. The head hanging gently hides the gimmick for you. This allows you a much wider angle range. In fact I can do it surrounded by doing it this way if I had to. The biggest concern is that the child is hurting. This is not the case at all. Children are used to having their heads like this. Am not forcing it down or causing them pain by doing so. It gently hangs over naturally and comfortably. It also keeps them more steady, and helps them to not look upwards at what is going on. Kids on the playground have their heads like this all the time. They are also not in this position for anything more than a minute tops. It also gives the proper appearance that the helper has been magically hypnotized or is in a magical state of rest. With the head rest, there is much too much a feeling of tension. The other problem with head rests of any type, shape and size is that they can be easily seen. The audience sees it from the start and it looks unnatural. It should be 2 chairs and a board and a cloth. Nothing more and nothing less. A head rest seen by the audience makes them question it. Why is it there and what does it do? It makes the illusion look more like a magic prop. The other problem is that with the head on the rest, even during presentation, the audience can clearly see the head rest. No matter how you try and hide it, it can still be seen. The audience knows it is still there. They saw it at the beginning and know the head cannot stay out like that without it. They also can see upwards as most are seated. With the head hanging naturally downward, this covers this angle very well. Actually I have adults amazed at this illusion. No lie. They freak out about it. The reason once again is in presentation and proper handling of the illusion. When done well, it really can and does fool adults. Never downplay that point. I agree in that every performer must tweak things to their desire. The problem is that there is also a right and wrong way of presenting an illusion. In my humble opinion, the head rest is a not needed item that hurts the illusion from being as powerful as it can be. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. Anthony Darkstone Brook - In Conversation With Ray Parker -------------------------------------------- Message by Anthony Darkstone Brook - Europe/USA Ray Parker is a wonderful Entertainer. To call him an experienced all-round International Entertainer would not even begin to do justice to his consummate skill and talent. I met Ray back in May 2007 when I was invited to lecture in Canada. I was with Paul Kilshaw, Michael Roth and few others in Tony Eng's Joke & Magic Shop already sold to Murray Hatfield) when a sprightly, spirited, jolly character, full of verve, dynamism and a beaming smile "floated" into the shop and introduced himself. I am happy to admit publicly that I am one of his biggest fans. He is a long-time Member of The International Brotherhood of Magicians and The Society of American Magicians. I've been in this business a while and I know a talented Pro when I see one. Ray Parker is The King! Nay! The Emperor! A fine wit, a genial personality and a very instantly likeable face endeared him to me instantly. We became firm friends. I am delighted to share our friendship via the following words. http://rayparkermadhatter.ca/ Facebook : Ray Parker ADB: Hello Ray . Nice to be able to catch up with you. Thanks for taking the time to converse. RP: Always a pleasure with you Tony. ADB: Ray, you hail from England but now live in Victoria, B.C, Canada and I read somewhere that you have been an Entertainer for 71 years ... care to elaborate on that .. RP: I warn you that 71 years in show biz has given me many memories and it might take a while . ADB: Wonderful. I am sure we will just love to hear some of your recollections . RP: Yes as you say, I am English and years later moved to Canada. I now live in Victoria, B.C. From my earliest days, show biz has been part of my life. As a baby I was taken to the local Hippodrome and movie theaters in my mother's arms. I grew up watching my parent's favorite entertainment musicals and variety theater. Every week I was exposed to that type of entertainment. At weekends my favorite aunt and uncle would visit with my cousin Eileen. Eileen was a talented entertainer, six months my senior, she danced and sang and at the age of three had already performed on stage doing an impersonation of Sophie Tucker singing "Some of these Days." ADB: You even did a duet of sorts together.. RP: Yes we did. My Mother, Aunt and Uncle all played piano and Eileen and I would sing and dance in the corner of the room, one song I remember us doing together was :- "Say say, oh playmate Come out and play with me And bring your dollies three Climb up my apple tree Slide down my rainbow Into my cellar door And we'll be jolly friends Forever more. When I was 5 years old Eileen taught me "I Can't Give You Anything But Love Baby." one of the hit songs of a 1928 Broadway show. a song that is still being recorded by today's stars (Diana Krall 1999.) I sang it many years later, on every show I did with the trio that played on my shows in England. End of Part 1 -------------------------------------------- 9. Houdini Returns -------------------------------------------- Article forwarded on bye by Mel Kientz Houdini Returns. (Of Course.) By David W. Dunlap/The New York Times A bust has been restored at Harry Houdini's grave site in the Machpelah Cemetery in Queens. Even in death, Harry Houdini has been hard to pin down. A bust of Houdini atop the central pedestal of his family plot at Machpelah Cemetery in Queens was smashed or stolen four times between 1975 and 1993. The Society of American Magicians, of which Houdini was president at the time of his death in 1926, then gave up trying to replace it. After that, except for the annual observance of Houdini's death, when a bust would be set there temporarily, the pedestal stood empty. The allegorical figure in the monument seemed to be grieving over its abandonment. [Andrea Mohin/The New York Times As seen in 1995, the pedestal had been empty for nearly 20 years.] But look again. He's back. On Sept. 27, in a caper worthy of the intrigue-filled story of the Houdini-Weiss family burial plot, self-styled commandos from the Houdini Museum in Scranton, Pa., took it upon themselves to install a reproduction of the bust, in what they hope will be durable statuary concrete. Though they operated in broad daylight, they did so without alerting the cemetery or the magicians' society. After years in which blame and responsibility were traded and shifted over the condition of the Houdini grave site, the commandos decided a fait accompli was in order. "It's a can of worms, which is why we went in surreptitiously," said Dick Brookz, a director of the Harry Houdini Museum. (He started spelling his name with a "z" because too many Dick Brookses come up in a Web search.) Dorothy Dietrich, another museum director and Houdini commando, said, "We were ready to get arrested." Or were they? A retired escape artist, Stephen Moore, was included in the crew. Let Mr. Brookz and Ms. Dietrich tell the story: Everything was ready: diamond bits, drills, a powerful vacuum system, a generator (no electricity at the grave), special cements and epoxies, a way to safely transport the bust. Everyone arrived by caravan at 10 a.m. and the work began. Each person had their assignments. Part way into the project, a cemetery caretaker and watchman inquired what we were doing. Dorothy explained and tried to distract him with various papers, etc., as we continued working. He said we would have to stop until he called his boss. A long, almost nonending phone conversation followed, and the issue of insurance came up. Our insurance agent faxed a letter and we were given the go-ahead. Because of the lost time and other problems - such as a powerful construction cement drying too rapidly, having to drill it out and rushing to a local hardware store last minute for more - we did not finish until 7 p.m. The watchman had now become our supporter and allowed the cemetery to stay open an extra three hours. David W. Dunlap/The New York Times For the first time since 1993, a bust of Harry Houdi ornaments his family grave site in Queens. Despite the commandos' unorthodox approach, officials of the cemetery and the society said on Monday that they were pleased with the result. "When someone offers to repair something that's broken - in a charitable spirit - any cemetery would be thrilled," said David Jacobson, the chairman, president and administrator of Machpelah Cemetery, which is nestled in the great verdant necropolis straddling the Brooklyn-Queens border. He said the cemetery received no money for continuing care of the site, much less the restoration of an ornamental feature. "Unless someone else pays for it, our hands are tied behind our backs," Mr. Jacobson said. George Schindler, the dean of the Society of American Magicians, said his group had stopped contributing money toward the maintenance of the site in recent years. But he expressed hope that a new arrangement might be worked out, in cooperation with the Houdini Museum. As for the bust, he said, "We're delighted with it." The timing isn't bad, either. Not only is Oct. 31 the 85th anniversary of Houdini's death, but this week also is designated "Magic Week." Mr. Brookz and Ms. Dietrich said the museum spent almost $10,000 to restore the bust. "But it sorely needed to be done," they added. "Houdini, in his lifetime, had paid for the fixing of dozens of magicians' graves that were in disrepair. This was only fitting payback." And everyone is hoping that his days of escape are finally over. ------------------------------------------- 13. Paul Gertner Video, Blind Love -------------------------------------------- Message from Paul Gertner Here is a link to my new act Blind Love. I had the idea for this act on December 4th of last year on a plane flying from Pittsburgh to Los Angeles. The entire visual of the act from start to finish exactly as you see in this video came into my head over the 4 hour plane ride. Now I had to figure out how to do it. The obsession (the word my wife would use) took 11 months to figure it out, build it and rehearse it. It's still a work in progress, but I thought the readers might enjoy it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NrGhdgAhkSM -------------------------------------------- 15. 2011 Variety Artist Of New Zealand Award Winners -------------------------------------------- Message by Glenda Law (New Zealand) The Benny Award - Shane Agnew Excellence Award - Karen Davy Top Variety Artist - Rick Sahar Unsung Hero Award - Brian Edgar Reilly Comedy Award - Jarred Fell Top Male Vocalist - Jamesray Top Female Vocalist - Janice Bateman Top Childrens Entertainer - Mick Peck Musician Of The Year - Chet O'Connell Top Group - The Mike Walker Trio Nostalgia Award (Residing Overseas) Tom Orchard (The Amazing Orchante) Nostalgia Award (NZ) Merv Thomas Rising Star Award - Lisa Crawley The VAC committee awarded two Nostalgia Awards this year.
