More Remarkable Magic # 49 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message by Nick Lewin (US) Koran: The Unique Years. It is no secret to my readers that I am a huge fan of the late Al Koran. When I play the "I wish I had got to see xxxxxx perform live.." game, Koran is always the first man on my list. No one even comes in a close second. For many years, the two classic Koran books were the chief source of information for those of us who were trying to learn the secrets of the master. Wonderful information, advice and routines were contained in those two slim volumes. They are still valuable and beloved residents in my bookshelf. Recently my friend Martin Breese has done a wonderful job in updating the available reading matter on this iconic performer and magical innovator. Breese must be really thanked by the magic community for his recent additions to our knowledge and understanding of Al Koran. He has added another classic book to the available treasure trove. I was delighted when Martin was kind enough to send me a PDF of his latest publication; I have found it to be a particularly fascinating volume. It gathers some rather obscure and extremely interesting material and turned it into a must-read book for fans of Koran. In fact, even if you have never had any interest in Al Koran because of his identification with mindreading, buy the book anyway-you may be in for a surprise. Don't forget Koran was the man who created the basis and framework for Ring Flight! Before he became an almost instant star as a mentalist, Koran was a very sophisticated and accomplished sleight of hand/close-up performer. This book collects routines and effects that have previously only seen the light of day in magazines. What they really demonstrate is what a powerful tunnel vision Koran had for the structure and subtleties that can create a miracle. His ability to simplify an effect and maximize its impact reminds me of a diamond cutter taking something precious and transforming it into something as close to perfection as possible. The magazines that these particular gems were culled from include, 'The Gen,' 'The Wizard,' 'The Magic Wand' and 'Pentagram.' I particularly enjoyed one particular series of columns for 'The Gen' called 'Kard Kolumns' in which various moves are detailed and then a trick involving them is added to the mix. It should mention that not every trick in the book was originated by Koran himself, however his selection of material is enlightening all on its own. When you are sharing slices of the mind of magical practitioners like Alex Elmsley this is not a negative point! One entire section of the book contains many of the commercial effects that Koran released under the auspices of Harry Stanley's Unique Magic Studio in London. A great deal of scholarly work went into patching these various instructions and manuscripts into a form suitable for release as a stand-alone book. The final section of the book details two routines that Koran released, after his relocation to America in 1969. I really enjoyed the highly personal and fact filled introduction to the book by Peter Zenner, which does much to fill in the personal legacy of this remarkable man. It goes a long way in revealing the real 'taste' of the man born Edward Charles Doe, who carved out a unique spot for himself under a new name. Did you know Koran performed a magical/musical act entitled 'Song & Sorcery?' I didn't; and I found this a fascinating piece of information, especially given the reason why. Since receiving the manuscript I have taken the time to learn and perform several of the routines from this book and can report that they are pure gold. This collection has released great new/old material and is a true cause for joy for the performing magician. The full details of the publication are as follows, Al Koran: The Unique Years * Compiled by Martin Breese * 6.5" x 9.5", hard bound, 200 pages, illustrated by Phil Shaw * £27.50 plus shipping * Martin Breese International www.abracadabra.co.uk Check out my blog at http://www.remarkablemagic.com or contact me at www.nicklewin1@me.com -------------------------------------------- 6. Never Let Them See You Fail - #224 - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com You're standing on the stage in front of a large crowd who have come to see your show. You are excited and the adrenalin is flowing through your body. The audience is loving every minute of it and you know you have them in the palm of your hand. Everything is as it should be when.......SCREECH... everything comes to a halt in your mind because you realize you forgot a move or missed a steal. Your heart starts to pound and that notion of being 1 step ahead of the audience falls by the wayside and is replaced by this fear of "what do I do now?" Many of us may laugh at the above scenario and many of us are probably shaking our head right now agreeing with the entire thing. The reason is, that if you perform any style of magic, chances are you have found yourself in this spot on more than one occasion. The problem as to why this happens are varied as it can be from nerves, improper set up, or just plain memory lapse. Why it happens is not so much the main focus of this article. However, what you do when this happens I feel is something worth talking about. No matter how much you practice, rehearse and go over your set up, you will never be perfect. There will always be times when things just go wrong. After all we are only human and that thing called "Murphy's Law" seems to follow us entertainers around a lot more than others. Learning to accept this simple fact is the first step in realizing how to address it when it does happen. There are a couple golden rules that I have come to learn over the years about this very topic. Some come from the knowledge of magicians before me and some come from just the sheer act of having it happen to me and learning from it. - Never let your audience know you made a mistake in the first place. It is so easy to get this "deer in headlights" look when we realize something has gone wrong or not as we had planned it. However the only way an audience will know you made a mistake is if you actually tell them. If you allow your body language or patter to reflect obviously that a mistake happened, then that is the only reason they will even know. The best advice when a mistake happens is to keep going on with your routine or act and do not let the audience know anything. If you maintain composure, the audience will never know the difference. - The only person who knows what is supposed to happen is YOU. This is a very important concept for any magician to remember. You are the only one who knows in your mind how the act or routine is supposed to play out. The audience only knows based on what you show them as the act unfolds. With this in mind, you can always go off of your normal routine and switch gears anytime you want. If you realize this simple point, it can allow you to change direction in the event something does not go according to plan. - Realize that there is power in improvisation. Some of my best routines have come from the simple fact that I had to improvise when something did not go as planned. By allowing yourself to improvise, you can often create some great ideas that you may never have thought of. - Learn to create "outs" in your routines. By "out" I simply mean to evaluate your routines and realize potential problems ahead of time. By defining these problems, you can create alternative courses of action and learn to use these when a situation presents itself. Remember that failure is never failure unless you fail to learn from it. Even when something does not go according to plan, we can take a step back, evaluate it and gain incite from it. If you even learn one thing from it, then failure really becomes a stepping stone to your success. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you. Tony Brook In Conversation With Ozlen Tuncer - Part 6 -------------------------------------------- Message by Anthony Darkstone Brook - Europe/USA ADB: You once told me that Magic is your Life style. Share with us some of what that means to you.. OT: If you think about everything in the same way and try to see everything primarily through the same angle, it may be easily told that it is not an ordinary subject in your personality but you way of life. I do not recall at what age I thought of becoming a magician. I do not have a story as most of the magicians beginning with a "Mysto Magic Set" - we did not have such a thing in those days. I also do not have story as " one day a magician came to perform in our School and then . I was born as a magician." Anything I do, I associate with magic. Anything I live, I try to link with magic. If I buy a shoe, I consider if I can use it on stage while performing. Any new music I hear, I try to associate it with an effect if I can use it for any new routine. I cannot imagine that I may be living when I do not deal with magic. It is not like an obsession because I do not suffer it. And then people around me are used to it now. Any new object I see leads to a new effect not necessarily that I perform it. Any new movie inspires me something about magic. I have no idea what happens if one day I become deprived of magic. I think this must be the same for most magicians and not unique to me. At least it's same for those I know. ADB: Clarify something for us. You have competed at FISM and so have other Turkish Magicians ..but if I recall correctly, in a previous conversation you told me, that none of your Magic clubs in Turkey are FISM member clubs and because this is so you are looking for a FISM member club to "sponsor" you and a few other Turkish Magicians. I am not personally sure what the rules are now but in the past this was possible . if this is possible what would you say to a potential sponsor club? OT: I have to confess one thing: Although there are really good magicians in Turkey, the weakest part of these artists are that they cannot gather up under any institute. My efforts for IBM and some other magic clubs are always aimed to form a unity which may last for the long term. Unfortunately Turkish artists are not used to collaborating. The reasons are really unknown. One may say due to big egos, one may say they feel free when working individually; another reason may be is that they do not want to spend any money and time for a common club. I really don't know. The only thing I know is that people are not so willing to work together and share their knowledge. This may be because of the old tradition where everybody tried to hide everything from the others. This is one other barrier we could not break. On the other hand, there are really skillful magicians in Turkey. But up to the year 2003, there was not a single Turk that competed at FISM representing Turkey before I did it. I had managed to participate with huge efforts and got a signature from Mr. Mike Stratman of IBM. It was a revolution in the Turkish history of magic. This revolution was two-folded: Turkish magicians learned that there is a huge magic world out there and the world learned that something about magic in Turkey. My fault was to compete in a competition which I have never watched before. It was a big experience for the Turkish magicians. Now we know what to do and what to expect. We are more prepared. In short, we are ready! ADB: But there's a bit more to being ready .. OT: Yes Tony you are right .But since we cannot gather in a club ....and the old minded professionals as well as those who know that they may never be on that level, do not collaborate. So no magic club gathers the application money to become a member of FISM. To be honest I could pay it myself for once but who knows what may come the next year. I cannot personally be paying for it forever. I hope when I have more students and colleagues having the vision to be integrated with the magic world outside, we will do it. I hope it is close now, but we will need time. Since we do not have any magic clubs in Turkey that are FISM member clubs we have to search again for a signature/sponsor from a club that may endorse our applications. As far as I know we have at least three acts ready for FISM - including mine. End of Part Six. -------------------------------------------- 8. Ian Keable Lecture At The Blackpool Magicians' Club -------------------------------------------- Message by Peter Eldin (UK) Ian Keable will be lecturing at The Blackpool Magicians' Club on Tuesday 13th September. As anyone who has attended magic conventions or other events knows he is a great success wherever he performs for he has a wealth of experience gathered in the top echelons of the entertainment business. Much of this experience will be passed on in his lecture entitled Stand-Up Classics. This is about mainly classic tricks he performs in his one-man show. It is his presentation and interpretation of classic tricks, using the techniques described in his book Stand-Up: A Professional Guide to Comedy Magic. Even if you never intend to do comedy you ought to read this all-inclusive book. It covers everything you need to know - and a lot more besides. -------------------------------------------- 12. White -------------------------------------------- Message Forwarded on by Dennis Schick Peter W. White 63 of Germantown died Friday August 19, 2011 after a long battle with cancer. Born August 30, 1947 in New Rochelle he was the son of the late Peter and Dorothy (Wagner) White. Peter was a long time member for both the I.B.M. and SAM. Peter was a music teacher and accomplished Jazz percussionist, and played many instruments including the Hammond B3 he had at his studio. He also co-owned P&A Silks along with his partner and wife Cynthia, in Germantown where they manufactured silks for magicians. He lectured and performed Magic throughout the US, Canada and Europe. He is survived by his wife: Cynthia whom he married December 9, 1990 in Somers, NY A Broken Wand Ceremony and celebration of his life was on August 24th in Germantown with a packed house. Magicians traveled from 5 states, a huge turnout were folks from his town as he was very involved with his community and loved by all. Peter touched so many lives, not only in magic, but in so many ways. The stories told gave a better understanding to all of who he really was. A friend to so many. Peter's unrivaled passion for silks and silk magic put him in a class all by himself. His belief in producing a quality and perfect product gave the magic community a collection of the highest quality silk-screened silk handkerchiefs made individually by hand in his own factory. Peter was often heard telling his customers, "when I'm gone, there will be no more silks like these." He would then explain that the process was long and complex to produce a single silk, and joke that "no one else would want to do this." I think once I even heard him say it a different way - "no one else would be crazy enough to do this." I know this first-hand to be true, as I and a few others have spent time at the factory on printing days to see how much work and attention to detail went into the creation of an original P&A Silk. What I saw was nothing less than amazing. Peter & Cynthia's dedication to the business of P&A Silks is reflected by an old adage: If it's worth doing, it's worth doing well. And every P&A product was an example of great American craftsmanship. Consider yourself fortunate if a P&A Silk is part of your magic repertoire or collection. As Peter would say, "Use it well." Peter spent a lifetime teaching, and he was always ready to explain how to properly use his silks in a magic performance. He also encouraged magicians to think for themselves and be creative using the fundamental silk-handling skills that he taught. Peter's mentorship to many practicing magicians today is evidenced by the posters that cover the walls of his factory with notes of "thank you." Thank you, Peter, for all you taught us about life and magic. You'll be missed forever. Thanks for the friendship, and the memories. -------------------------------------------- 14. Erdnasum Aug 26-7, 2011 -------------------------------------------- Message by Robert Noel Clarkson Amateur Magician Michael Vance and Journalist Marty Demarest hosted an Erdnasum Symposium at the Sanders bed and Breakfast in Helena Montana during the weekend of August 27, 2011 to examine documentary evidence and to discuss the plausibility of Alexander's recent hypothesis concerning the true identity of S.W. Erdnase, author of Expert at the Card Table (1902). (NOTE: See Sept Issue of Genii for Alexander's revelation) Research Presentations were made by Richard Hatch and Marty Demarest, along with technical demonstrations by Jason England, and R. Paul Wilson. A short parlor mental performance by Vance took place early on Sunday Morning after the conference at the Victorian Mansion. Attendees were Jim Steinmeyer, William Kalush, Geno Munari, Bill Mullins, Ricky Smith, The Buck Twins; Dan and Dave, Jason England, Eric Mead, Derek Delgautio, Robert Noel Clarkson, Brent Cromeley, Chad Kruger, and Chad Randash. On Saturday the group made a field trip to the Montana Historical Society to examine historical diaries and notebooks pertaining to the theory; made a tour of the Montana State Capitol Rotunda and State Museum; and visited Forestvale Cemetery in Helena, final resting place for many prominent Helena families, S. W. Erdnase? Actress Myrna Loy ("Thin Man" and "Bachelor and Bobby Soxer"), and magician Joe Crowell (billed as The Devil); followed by lunch in the Parrot Confectionary, still serving original candy recipes, chili, and fountain sodas from the early 20th Century and located beneath the original location of the Erdnase? office (on the 2nd story which had been destroyed by a fire in 1925 that may also have destroyed many family records pertaining to the hypothesis.) The symposium ended with a beef barbecue, with beef provided by Demarest's ranch and prepared by The Sanders B&B, my local business sponsored a keg of local microbrew pale ale. All attendees received mementos provided through the generosity of The Conjuring Arts Research Center (NYC); and Houdini's Magic Shop (Las Vegas.) More specific information concerning the discovered evidence in the presentations is available to subscribers to the Magic Cafe and the Genii Forum. A future article about the event is being prepared for Richard Kauffman's Genii Magazine. So I will not be reporting anything about the revelations in this report out of respect for the magic writers and publishers who actually sponsored this historic symposium. A selection of my photos of the event appears on my Facebook page, Robert Noel Clarkson, in an album entitled Erdnasum. -------------------------------------------- 15. "Shore Is Magic!" Romhany Magic Report By Paul Romhany -------------------------------------------- Message by Paul Romhany This week on the Video Report my special guest performer is John Kaplin. John recently returned from Las Vegas where he was a guest lecturer at Magic Live. I was fortunate to tour with John in one of his touring shows across Western Canada and he is a great showman, business and all round good guy. His latest creation is his cut and restored Hanky - and having seen it many times it still fools me. It fooled the heck out of everybody at Magic Live and is destined to become a classic. I also review Pain Game by John Allen. It's probably the best version of the Russian roulette style routines out there. I saw John do this at the recent Canadian Magicians Convention and got a huge reaction. I'm not a big fan generally of these type of routines, however this one changed my mind - I love it! Also, each week I hope to show small clip of one of the most incredible coin workers I've ever seen - Michael Afshin - I am currently working a on very large project with Michael and so have the opportunity to get to know him and spend time filming his work. As Richard Webster said to me when he saw some of the daily footage - "it's poetry with coins." You can see all this and read more on my weekly report at http://romhanyreport.blogspot.com/ -------------------------------------------- 17. e-zine Archives -------------------------------------------- Back issues of the Magic New Zealand e-zine go to: www.magicnewzealand.com click on the red button center right "Archives" When you enter the archive the e-zines are in issue order in folders for each year and are Coded, e.g. 001 Nov06 1999.txt first three numbers (001) denote issue number, then the date (Nov06) and the last figures the year (1999) -------------------------------------------- 18.
