Remember if you have any magic news drop me a line: Editor@MagicNewZealand.com -------------------------------------------- 2. A Few Notes from Edinburgh by Debbie McGee -------------------------------------------- Message by Debbie McGee (UK) A few notes from Edinburgh by Debbie McGee. The wife of Paul Daniels, Magician and English Sex Symbol and Body Builder (so he says). Edinburgh is a beautiful town in Scotland, UK and for those who do not know about the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, it is the biggest event in the UK and maybe the world. Everyday there are 2,500 shows going on and it could be described as Rio meets Disney. Most shows last for about an hour and each venue will have shows on all through the day and into the night. There are hundreds of venues and they are very diverse, from the beautiful theatres of the city, hotels, bars, halls and anywhere you can host a show. Sometimes on a bus or in a public toilet! So now with the scene set I will fill you in on our experience so far. Paul and I arrived a week ago and it has been a frenzy ever since, a fun one though. We haven't stopped being interviewed or appearing on the shows of other artistes performing here. There are too many to name but they have all been a huge success. Paul is having a ball and I am enjoying being along for the ride. The Paul Daniels Show has literally stormed The Edinburgh Fringe Festival this year. No one has had as much media coverage, this was caused by The Sun newspaper printing a story that the famous children's puppet "Sooty" hit Paul in the eye with a pizza whilst filming for the new TV series. The story appeared in the paper the day Paul opened at the Fringe. In fact the truth was that six weeks earlier Paul had been hit in the eye by a pizza whilst filming with Sooty; but it was a slight happening not the huge injury that The Sun reported. Following The Sun's article the story spread around the national media and of course Edinburgh. The actual show here is full of fun and laughter and Paul's experience is shining through. People keep saying to me, we didn't know he was so funny! The venue is small "Assemby 1 at George Square" it seats 280 and Paul just loves the intimacy with his audience. It lasts for just an hour and the first ten minutes is just chat, getting to know the audience with Paul making jokes from the information he receives from the audience and also topical things of the day. Following this is Paul's trade mark "Cup and Balls" trick which has the auditorium vibrating with laughter. I can say this because at this point I am through two doors waiting to go on and I have to cover my ears with the noise. Deans' Box is the next trick, bought on by me to tumultuous applause and every show Paul complains that he is working his butt off and then I walk on and get a bigger applause (I haven't told him I pay them to do that, it keeps him on his toes!). Anyway back to Dean's Box, which Paul explains is only for intelligent audiences .... although said in jest I actually think this is true! I love it, say no more. Paul has bought back to life his Rabbit Table Routine for the next item on the show. This is wheeled on by the ever lovely Debbie McGee (that's me). Anyone who has seen this piece will tell you how funny it is, but to describe it would not do it justice, so I won't. (Take a look on Youtube) The next segment of the show is some of Paul's Act as known, card in wallet and others with two male members of the audience. One of the men as usual loses his paper money and to build to the climax of the show Paul puts this in a see through Guillotine, this is not a serious routine! The climax of the show Paul performs his Egg, Lemon and Walnut routine, from which he returns the chaps money. The audiences have all left on a high and the one review Paul has received so far was raving about the show, so what more could we ask for. If you have never visited the Edinburgh Fringe Festival I cannot recommend it highly enough. Yes folks it is better than a magic convention, but there are other magic shows here and so when we have slowed down a bit through all the publicity I will report on them. Until then tatty bye! AND keep practicing! Listen to me on BBC Radio Berkshire Sunday mornings from 9-12 104.4FM 95.4FM or online bbc.co.uk/berkshire -------------------------------------------- 3. FISM Oceania Results -------------------------------------------- Message by Sue-Anne Webster President - Australian Institute of Magic OCM 2011 Close-Up - Six competitors only Judges: Boris Wild - France Craig Mitchell - College of Magic, South Africa Sue-Anne Webster - President, AIM 1st - Simon Coronel (Equal 3rd place winner Micro Magic, FISM2009) 2nd - John Fung 3rd - not awarded OCM 2011 Stage - Five competitors only Judges: Boris Wild - France Craig Mitchell - College of Magic, South Africa Sue-Anne Webster - President, AIM Doug Tremlett - Magician, Theatrical Director and Producer of major Australian corporate events. 1st - not awarded 2nd - not awarded 3rd - Enzo Ficco The FISM World Championships of Magic is an event held once every three years in different countries around the world. The FISM not only expects high standards in performance, but it also expects performers to take magic to new levels. FISM Oceania is allocated one place for the FISM World Championships of Magic. However, the FISM had been kind enough to allocate FISM Oceania a second competition spot. Unfortunately, only one competition spot was awarded. The judges unanimously agreed that although the competitors had perfectly fine acts for general public viewing, they did not score high enough in the FISM judging criteria to be awarded the second competition spot for the FISM2012 WCM in Blackpool, England. As a result, the FISM has taken back the second competition spot and no further judging for the Oceania region will be conducted for FISM2012. We look forward to more FISM related organisations in the Oceania region, and more performers willing to partake in the prestige event of the FISM World Championships of Magic. The judges were extremely impressed with the high standard of junior competitors at the Australian Junior Championships of Magic - both stage and close-up, and were excited to see that the Oceania region has a bright future for the FISM WCM. -------------------------------------------- 4. S A M Hall Of Fame And Magic Museum -------------------------------------------- Message by George Schindler (US) Update from Ed Thomas, P.N.P. Vice President, S.A.M. Hall of Fame- The SAM Hall of Fame and Magic Museum has removed its magical artifacts, magic equipment, illusions, posters, library, ephemera, files, S.A.M. files and other personal property from the bank and placed them into two secure storage units. We also have an additional storage unit with items from the John U. Zweers collection and other magic items donated to the Museum. We removed our main theater seats to an auction house for sale. The seats came from the historic Pasadena Playhouse and were in our theater for 40 years, so they have a historic, theatrical background. The seats did not sell at the May 22, 2011 auction. Post sale offers were received and accepted. We are looking at the possibility of acquiring appropriate space where we can store our artifacts and re-establish a museum and theater. We are planning future "An Afternoon of Magic" programs on Sunday afternoons in August and in October for National Magic Week. The programs consist of a magic show, educational lectures, display of magic memorabilia and light refreshments. Our all-volunteer staff of talented and dedicated men and women is working toward the preservation and continuation of the S.A.M. Hall of Fame and Magic Museum. Donations are always welcome to S.A.M. More Remarkable Magic # 46 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message by Nick Lewin (US) Carl Andrews-the man with the magical Mojo! As promised last week, I want to discuss the very talented Carl Andrews. I have never seen Carl perform but we work in many of the same venues and I have heard many great things about his show, usually from production managers and technicians who are pretty tough to impress. Actually the first thing you hear about Carl is what a great guy he is, and that isn't something you hear all that often! Everyone seems to have a nice story about Carl that contributes to his ongoing thoughtful and kind character bio. It is amazing what you hear about other performers when you work with the same tech-teams and it usually isn't as overwhelmingly positive as it is with Carl. In fact there are some really great magicians that you hear horror stories about on personal level. As an iAnything junkie (yup, if you put a silver Apple on the side of anything I will buy it) it took me all of a nano-second to become an avid App collector when the iPhone first appeared on the scene. I currently have 1317 Apps between my iPhone and my iPad. This is where the other side of Carl comes in to play. He is also an elegant and world class App developer. There are many magic Apps available through the iTunes store, some are amazing and some are really pretty dumb. You pay your two or three bucks and you take your choice/chances. Many great Apps are spoiled by silly glitches and incorrect details that very quickly cause you to delete the App and save a little memory and onscreen real estate presence. I find it significant that each one of Carl's magic Apps that I have purchased has stayed on my phone and stuck there like glue since the day I downloaded them. There is a reason; and it is a simple one, they are top notch Apps that have been well thought out, well written and carefully updated. Andrews is obviously a triple threat as a Performer, Thinker and Computer Wiz! 'No Freakin' Way' is my very favorite way to make a fast, quick statement that proves I am a magician. It is a beautifully constructed App that blows away any telephone audience. It is as much fun to perform as it is astounding to watch. On those rare occasions when I want to give someone a business card, I turn the moment into something rather cool by using Andrews 'BizCard'. This App is a really great piece of iCandy that looks less like a magic trick than it does ultra new technology. Arthur C. Clarke, the great science fiction author once said, "All future technology that is sufficiently advanced will look like magic." I think it is worth making note that I am very, very sparing about how many iTricks I perform to any one individual. The top end of that sliding scale is two! Anymore and it becomes painfully obvious how integral the phone and its many hidden talents are involved in causing the magic to 'happen.' Other Apps from Carl's product line I always carry are; 'Loose Change,' 'Magic Draw' and 'Any Card.' I suggest you take a look at Carl's website www.mojosoftwareonline.com You might also want to take a look at his personal website www.carlandrews.com I had planned to share favorite Apps from some of my readers but my request last week for input resulted in only one email. Rather disappointing. However thank you Kerry Ross for sharing your great experience with 'Waze,' I have now added it to my arsenal! Website Lead Marketing - 3 Step Process - #221 - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com I have a 3 step process I go through whenever I am working with prospects that come in through my website. The inquiry comes in via my website. The website is set up in such a way that it is a form that they fill out. The form is easy to do and directs them to give me the information I need to bet be able to quote them a price. It is also set up so that I get information from them so as to best be able to give them packages or solutions that best meets their needs. I keep it easy in that many of the form fields are drop down menus or check box fields. This way it is very simple for them to fill out quickly. Then their information goes directly to my email in box as they get a simple email (done automatically) stating "thank you for your inquiry regarding our unique brand of magic and illusion shows. We are eager to talk to you and will get back to you within 24 hours. Thank you." It also gives them a bit of general information on who I am and what I do. Once I receive their email (generated from my website form), I send them out my first email to them. This is an email that is more of a sales letter selling who I am, what I do, what makes me unique and list the features and benefits of my show. It also gives them a powerful call to action. The beauty is that I have this set as a template. This way information goes out quickly with no time delay. It also ensures that I am sending out consistent information to every prospect every time. Keep in mind that this does not have my prices listed. I want them to engage me first before we talk pricing. I then wait 5 business days. If I do not hear from them, I send out my first follow up email. I make sure I am not sending anything out on a Monday as it tends not to be read. This is also set as a template to make it easier for me to send out a great letter that works every time. This letter is short and to the point and basically states something like: "We hope by now you have received our information regarding providing our unique brand of magical entertainment for your event. We hope it has answered many questions that you may have and shows you how we can create a customized solution to meet your needs. We still have dates and times available, but they are filling up fast. We want you to have the first option on the date you requested so act today. If I can be of any help to you or answer any questions you may have, please let me know. You can reach me at (place contact information here)" You get the general idea. It is a good and simple follow up that entices them again to remember you and that you sent them information before and that you can answer questions for them as needed to help them out. I then wait 2 weeks after this follow up to send out one last follow up email to the person. This is similar to the above but shorter and to the point and just asking them that we are still available for them and their event and can work with them on a customized show. It states we encourage them to contact us so we can talk about a solution that meets their needs. Of course this is also in a template to make it easier for me to get information out quickly. After this, that is the last follow up I will send to the person. At this point, if I send something out too soon, it becomes spamming. However, I will always add them to my leads database. This way I can send them stuff next year and also send them an email occasionally during each holiday. When I do this, I am not hard selling. It is just an email wishing them a great holiday and keeps my name fresh in their minds. I hope that this helps and that you can see how setting up a system like this can work and benefit your magic business. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you. I am proud to say that my new product website: http://www.kpmagicproducts.com has been doing very well I thank so many of you for checking it out. I hope you continue to find it of help to you. Please stay tuned to the site for sales, news and upcoming product launches. -------------------------------------------- 8. Tony Brook In Conversation With Ozlen Tuncer - Part 3 -------------------------------------------- Message by Anthony Darkstone Brook - Europe/USA ADB: Well, in a way, why not? You have every right to be proud of your achievements . I mentioned in my introduction that you have the ability to think on several levels at the same time and this brief list of your many achievements clearly demonstrates that quality. You used to perform as, "Ozlen The Magician" but changed to Dr. Tora. OT: Yes Tony. It is a long story but the short version is that there are many people who had contributed to my development but I have to thank one person especially: Dr. Morgan, my mentor. He did not teach me lots of tricks. He taught me how to become an original .. not a copy of anybody. More importantly, he also taught me the ethics of the art. He taught me the very basic effects in detail such as: The Linking Rings, Rope cutting and basic card manipulation etc. He was a great man. He created Dr.TORA: The Prince of Magic out of a young boy "Ozlen the magician " ADB: Over the years there has been some controversy over that . as there is another gentleman who uses that name. OT: Well yes . you are right Tony. I can talk about that for hours but the fact remains that I used it first . Some will agree with me some won't. It is, as you say, quite controversial and it is a subject that has been talked about, debated about and in the end as I said already, some agree with me, some don't. Nevertheless in this very e-zine I had written about it. I also had written to many places such as IBM, IMS, WAM etc. For me, I am Dr.Tora and I will continue to be Dr. Tora. Audiences and other members of the International Magic community will decide which side of the debate they will support. But I have the proof to present to anybody who is interested. He was TURA not TORA and changed his name after meeting me. I have his own commercial papers and posters in which he called himself TURA. As I said, the magic community will decide who is the original one. ADB: Well true . people will decide. But I'm told that one hard core fact is that you studied at the IMS and obtained your Magic degree as Dr. Tora. OT: Yes that is indeed true. It is a matter of record. But my academic study about a Magic Curriculum for a year university education in the major field of Psychology surpasses all. My doctorate comes from there in fact. I am "Dr" Tora for I have an academic doctorate. ADB: Moving on . let's talk about the annual Magic Convention that you are involved with at Izmir. tell us a bit about that . how it got started , etc ..etc . OT: Tony, would you believe that it was not a planned event? In the year 2000, one of my good friends Dr. Selim Basarir informed that he has come to Izmir for an academic meeting and will glad to meet with me in the evening. We met and two my colleagues were with me. We went to the seaside and sat at a cafe table doing tricks for each other. During this session, I received a call from one of my very good friends Mr. Erdinc Demiray from Istanbul. He told me he wanted to visit. And surprisingly, he said he was already in the area. We told him to wait there and headed the location immediately. We arrived in 15 minutes. We met at the reception lobby of the camping site and sat at a table chatting about magic and doing more tricks. Then I got another call . a friend from Austria was calling and said he was only 35 km away and wanted to meet me the next day. I was glad and told him that I was not alone but with more people who were mutual magician friends. We agreed to meet the next evening at the OBA hotel's lobby. To make a long story short, we met the next evening and spent time together until dawn. We did not know that it was the first of our meetings to come. Only 5 magicians and some lay people to watch that was all. The next year we had some students and we wanted them to show their acquired skills to their families. Incidentally, it was on the same week that we had met the year before. We only invited the families of the students and in the last minute we also wanted to inform the magicians about this event. Just to inform! We did not invite because we did not expect them to come. We were wrong. Many people from different cities and even from foreign countries came to share the event. The saloon was fully packed. And it was at this second meeting that we decided to convert this event in to a get together. The following year we had held it in conjunction with the International Izmir Fair which is a huge event involving millions of visitors. This was so huge for us that we again decided going on in our original premises: OBA Hotels lobby. This year we will be doing the 12th get together. I can keep talking about this annual gathering for forever .. so I better stop now ...However, I just would like to add that this is a non-profit making event in which nobody earns anything ..just sharing magic. Anybody who is interested is welcome. This year the event will take place on the 28, 29 and 30th of June 2011. Plus if you are a member of any of the Magic organizations or Societies you do not have to pay to attend the event. Any form of contribution is welcomed, such as a show, a lecture, a workshop or whatsoever. Anyone interested can contact me. End of Part Three -------------------------------------------- 9. Bill and Marlene Seagraves Send Their Thanks -------------------------------------------- Message by Bill and Marlene Seagraves Through your e-zine I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Magical Fraternity for their concern during my recent illness. I was humbled by the amount of phone calls, emails and cards I received from around the World. Your thoughts and prayers were appreciated. Where has the time gone, it seems like only yesterday that Marlene and I were spending a memorable time in the USA enjoying the IBM convention in Dallas, visiting The Magic Castle with our long-time friends Fred and Manya Casto. Enjoying the hospitality at Jack and Jan Browne's home on the 4th July. Happy memories. Then on our return to New Zealand without any warning I was being rushed to Taupo hospital with a suspected heart attack. I was then transferred to the new 5***** Cardiac Unit in Rotorua for further tests as I was not responding to treatment. I was then flown by helicopter to Waikato hospital in Hamilton to be examined by their Cardiac team. The end result is that a viral infection had affected two major organs, my heart and lungs. After three weeks I have been allowed home with ongoing monitoring. Once again I thank everyone for their kindness. Magic Mountains - Dave Boyd Hangs Up His Wand -------------------------------------------- Message by Dave Boyd (Australia) I have finally hung up my wand, I turn 77 on the 1st September this year. I retired about four years ago, I had been under contract to Magic Mountain fun park for all school holidays for 25 of those years. When the Victorian Bush Fires devastated so many homes, I decided to perform a show for a local Pre-School, the entire takings to be sent to the Bush Fire Appeal. The details were published in the local paper. This started the phone ringing requesting show at schools, pre-schools, shopping centres as well as Agricultural shows and kids birthday parties. It was averaging three shows a week and sometimes much more at shopping centres where I would perform two shows a day for the whole week. As a result I could not do as much travelling as I wanted, but did have two months in the UK, a month in New Zealand and a couple of cruises. As a result of the bookings it was getting harder and harder to get away. I decided to take no more bookings, just perform the advance booking I had in the diary. I advertised the business for sale, I quickly had a buyer, I am now training him up in the basic shows, including selling him the props required for those show. I have a large number of magic books I am selling if anyone wishes to be sent a list of the books email me on boyddp@hotmail.com. Over the next few weeks I will also be listing the props that I will have for sale, again, send me an email requesting a copy of that list, I will then email them a copy of props and prices when I have made up the list. Lastly I would like to thank the many magicians that I can call friends in Australia, New Zealand and around the world for their friendship over the many years. Dave Boyd (Magic Mountains Mr. Magic) I can also be contacted by phone on 0428 922940 -------------------------------------------- 11. The Magic of Smoking An E-Cigarette -------------------------------------------- Message by Walter Blaney (US) Just this week I saw a friend with a rather new device called an E-Cigarette. It is a white metal cigarette that looks like a real one. But there is no tobacco, no smoke, no cancer or other health problems, no odor, no fire hazard, and no continuous cost in money. Yet it appears to light up at the end, and a person sucking on the filter tip then blows visible smoke (actually just harmless water vapor) into the air, just like with a real cigarette. Sounds almost too good to be true, but I saw it and examined it, and it works. So it occurred to me that magicians who used to do an act of producing lit cigarettes can now do this again with the blessing of the public, as long as it is known what they are doing. All those "cigarette sleights" you learned when younger can be used again. A cigarette act has never been my cup of tea, but in the past some professionals made a reputation with their cigarette acts. The product is so well made I fully expected to see "P&L" stamped on the fake e-cigarette. Read more here: http://adphealthinsights.com/are-electronic-cigarettes-healthy/index4b.php Take the idea for what it's worth. -------------------------------------------- 12. September Issue Of Genii Magazine -------------------------------------------- Message by Richard Kaufman (US) The September issue of Genii represents what is probably the end of almost 110 years of nagging curiosity: the identity of S.W. Erdnase. Journalist Marty Demarest has discovered the true identity of the man who is almost certainly the author of The Expert at the Card Table. Marty's CV-he's a lifelong amateur magician-reads perfectly for this task: "A national-award winning writer and journalist whose work has been featured on National Public Radio (Morning Edition), Public Radio International (Marketplace), Disney and Viacom networks, as well as in the alternative press. He is the recipient of a Golden Reel, an Edward R. Murrow, an AAN, and two PRNDI awards. His work has received grants from organizations including the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation for Arts and Culture." To continue our efforts to scale the top of Mt. Erdnase this month, Roberto Giobbi's new installment of the "Genii Session" offers details on his own study of The Expert at the Card Table which I'm sure you'll find invaluable. * Tom Stone, who doesn't seem very much interested in Erdnase, still manages to climb onboard the train and publishes a unique handling of the "Ten-Card Poker Deal" that doesn't use 10 cards. * Even Jon Racherbaumer manages to squeeze Erdnase into "On the Slant," and Jon also provides an Erdnase audio quiz in the digital version of Genii. And we also celebrate the fact that this is Jon's 100th edition of "On the Slant"! I greatly appreciate his unique contribution, and so do many of you from the comments we receive. * We have a fine "Magicana" from David Acer with three excellent tricks. * Jamy Ian Swiss, David Regal (filling in for David Oliver, who's on sabbatical), and Dustin Stinett wrap it up with books, tricks, and DVDs. About the Audio and Video Supplements in Genii's digital edition: One of the things I've noticed in my travels in the past six months is how many people have iPads. Apple is projected to sell another 40 million this year, and it's easy to see why. Thousands of people have downloaded Genii's free iPad app, and the issues on the iPad are free to all subscribers as well. . When you subscribe to the paper, you get the digital free. One of the things I enjoy about our iGenii digital edition of the magazine is the opportunity to include audio and video supplements. As I meet Genii readers at magic conventions, I ask if they've looked at the digital edition and they sometimes say, "I'm a paper guy." Well, even if you prefer to read the paper edition of Genii, the digital iGenii edition offers at least an hour of video in every issue. Genii gives you more than any other magazine in magic for your money. Subscriber to Genii for only $56 for one year and you receive: * 12 paper issues delivered to your home. * The current issue online, free to all subscribers, with audio and video extras. (Subscribers can read these issues weeks before the paper issue arrives.) * Access to every single back issue Genii has published from 1936 through December 2008. That's almost 1000 issues! Tens of thousands of columns, tricks, illusions, and articles. And it's all absolutely free to every Genii subscriber. Of course you will have to be on the internet for access, which will be through the Conjuring Arts Research Center. The issues are simple pdf documents which can be read on most electronic devices including newer Kindles, Sony eReaders, Nook, iPhone, iPad and of course any desktop or laptop computer. (So far, unfortunately, tablets running Android cannot read pdf files embedded in a website--we're hoping a patch will be created soon.) Every subscriber will have access to an electronic version of every issue for the duration of his or her subscription. Digital-only subscriptions are available for $56 to residents outside the United States: http://geniistore.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=35&product_id=57 If you are a subscriber and haven't sent us your e-mail address yet, please do so to: genii@geniimagazine.com). Magician's Survival Guide - The Book -------------------------------------------- Message by Paul Romhany (NZ) Dear friends in magic. My new project is a book about hints and tips from the working magician. I am looking to fill this book with as many different people in the world of magic as possible. It can be one line quotes or several lines. The idea is to offer handy hints and tips for magicians by magicians. It can deal with close-up magic performers for example who might have a great tip about keeping props organized to advice on how to handle a heckler. It could be an illusionist who has advice or hints on traveling - A cruise magician who has advice on packing small and playing big. It's about magicians sharing their experiences so if you have a great story to tell please drop me a line as well. I would really like to get as many magicians from around the world as possible involved in this project. Email me at info@paulromhany.com -------------------------------------------- 20. This Weeks Romhany Video Report -------------------------------------------- Message by Paul Romhany (NZ) This week on my Video Blog I visit with Matthew Johnson again, and he performs his latest effect called The Moment, which was also created in partnership with Christopher Taylor. It's an incredible effect using a person's cell phone, and can be performed on stage or close-up. I also take a look at a brand new release that was originally designed by Wayne Rogers called "The Briefcase Illusion." This is an easy to build illusion that offers lots of potential from appearances to vanishes. I have been asked to review some 'kids' material so this week I take a look at Silly Billy's book plus a few of his products.
