David Berglas' Foundation For Promoting The Art Of Magic -------------------------------------------- Message by Crag Mitchell (South Africa) Many know of David Berglas' incredible feats of the impossible - from the legendary Any Card at Any Number to the most sensational of mentalism stunts ... but few are as familiar with his philanthropic endeavours and his Foundation for Promoting the Art of Magic ( FP-AM ). Behind the scenes and away from the spotlight - David has quietly been supporting and inspiring a whole new generation of young performers ... particularly at the College of Magic in Cape Town, South Africa. The only organisation of its kind - the College of Magic uses the art of magic as a social means for upliftment - affecting change and giving hope to those who need it most. With a student population drawn from some of the most poverty stricken areas imaginable, these young people face a daily battle of survival against a backdrop of crime, hopelessness and a future without possibility. The College of Magic aims to change that - showing young people that as in magic, nothing in life is ever impossible. And the results have been astounding. Thanks to David's support - thousands of young people have experienced the life changing benefits of the College's training - quite literally altering their future life trajectory forever. David's belief in the development of magic and earnest desire in making a difference - is not just limited to the confines of South Africa ... but extends across the globe. The Foundation for Promoting the Art of Magic was instrumental in bringing the recent Essential Magic Conference to young magicians around the world and in May made a lasting impact in supporting deserving young performers to be a part of the phenomenal International Magic Experience in Las Vegas. David Berglas may well be known as the International Man of Mystery ... but his contribution to magic and the future of the art is no enigma at all ... it is one clearly borne out of love, respect and a deep desire to make a lasting impact in the lives of so many young people. Thank you, David ! -------------------------------------------- 5. More Remarkable Magic # 44 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message by Nick Lewin (US) Looking forward to TAOM. A very brief column from me this week, as I wend my way back from Norway to Las Vegas and prepare for my upcoming move to Los Angeles. Lots of packing and sorting of props as we return to the City that I still think of as home. One item on my schedule that I am really looking forward to is my appearance at the TAOM Convention in San Antonio this Labor Day weekend. My performances at Magic Conventions have been very, very limited in the last twenty years; in fact they can be counted on the fingers of one hand, basically I have been too busy working at non-magician events. A trip to the glorious city of San Antonio and a side trip to my favorite spot in the states, Austin TX were just too good to miss! I am counting down the days to my first Lone Star Beer and that first bite of Texas barbeque. I am dusting of my favorite duster and cowboy hat----I am dead serious about that, as I am a devoted faux cowboy. The committee have organized a truly World Class line-up of performers and lecturers and I am honored to be amongst them. Just to give you a taste of the talent, Gaetan Bloom, Wayne Dobson, Tom Stone, John Archer, Nathan Kranzo, Jon Racherbaumer, Quentin Reynolds, David Acer, Kurt Miller, David Kaplan and Amos Levkovitch. Yikes! There will be three stage shows in the gorgeous Lila Cockrell Theatre, twelve lectures, close-up and stage contests and a late night Bizarre show. The HQ for the event will be at the Hilton Palacio del Rio, which means the always-exciting San Antonio Riverwalk will be in our backyard. If you want more details about the event click on their website www.taom2011.com I hope any of you who have been readers of my writing will make a point of coming up to say, "Howdy," to me at the event. It is always a pleasure to meet my 'magical pen pals' in person. To all my friends 'Down Under,' I will be appearing at the New Zealand Convention next year, so don't worry if you don't make it to San Antonio -I have some special surprises for all my Kiwi buddies! I am already excited about attending this event and getting to catch up with friends old and new. One of the joys about returning to Los Angeles is that I am planning to re-explore my roots in the magic world, so if you want to catch my show or see my lecture, this could be the time. Drop me an email if you have a magic event or convention that would like to see a fresh face, who has been busy making money and working constantly for the last 40 years! Effective Group Brainstorming - #219 - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com The power of creative thinking and being a better performer is in the art of doing. You MUST be willing to take action to achieve any success you are after. No one is coming to your house to hand you creativity on a platter it's not going to happen. If you want to be better physically fit, you need to exercise your body. Likewise, if you want to be more creative, you need to exercise your mind. The more you do, the easier it becomes over time. By consistently practicing the art of creativity, you start to hopefully make the process a habit. It has been stated that anything can become a habit if you consistently do it each day for over 30 days. During the end of that time you will have created a process that you naturally do without stopping to think about it. So how do we exercise our mind each day? How do we learn to be creative on a daily basis? I often do this through the art of brainstorming sessions or what I also refer to as free-flow thinking. My art teacher once told me that ideas are constantly entering our head every single day. The problem is we do not take time enough to write them down and so the ideas go in one ear and out the other. We simply never stop enough to take that idea and retain it for a later use. You want to first get into a habit of recording anything and everything that comes into your head. This is the art of journaling and it has a huge impact on effective brainstorming. You simply want to have a method of recording your ideas as they come to you. This can be in a journal or even a phone app like Dragonspeech. Once you have realized that you need to start recording your ideas, you can take the next step by forming what I call brainstorming groups. It is great being creative by yourself. However, the power really comes from surrounding yourself with other creative people just like you. You will be amazed at how you each help each other out to grow. You are in essence assisting each other and ensuring everyone stays on track to keep heading down the right road of being a better creative thinker. So how do you host brainstorming group sessions? The first thing is to make sure you are careful about who you let into your group. You want to make sure the folks you allow in are creative thinkers and are open to helping themselves and others. They must put their ego in check. The power of the group is that everyone is equal and everyone helps each other. Next you set a time or place to either meet at a person's house or even meet via Skype. Skype.com is wonderful and free service that allows multiple people the ability to voice and video chat live around the world at no cost to you. This is such a great tool for brainstorming groups. Now the people in your group do not have to live near you. If you are using Skype, you simply pick a date and time where everyone can meet online. The beauty is that you can also record the session and send this to the group afterwards as a follow up. Now there are some rules your group needs to follow as you host these brainstorming group sessions. Let me explain them to you: Each time you meet one person is designated as their time. In other words they are in the spotlight for that session. They come to the group with an act they are working on or a routine they need help with. Everyone else is simply there to assist that person in any way Next step is to have that person start off the session by showing or explaining to the group what they have so far and what areas they need assistance on. The group then takes turns offering suggestions and advice. This is done one person at a time so people are not just shouting out things. Each person takes a turn to share ideas and thoughts. It is important that what is said in the group STAYS in the group. Nothing gets told to anyone else outside of the group so people feel more open to sharing ideas. It is agreed by the group in advance that anything stated or shared to any person can be used by that person freely to advance their idea. You do so out of trust and knowing you will get help in return later on. There is no wrong answers and no wrong ideas. The main point is to freely share thoughts to assist the person. It is up to that person to take in and utilize what they feel can work for them. Do not hinder yourself or the group by trying to filter ideas you decide to share. Put it out there and let the group decide. You will be amazed at just how powerful group brainstorming sessions can be if you follow some of the above tips. Often times someone else can solve a problem that was staring you in the face but you simply did not see it. Many times a person in the group can spark an idea that takes your routine or act in a direction you never thought of before. Folks if we want what we do to be seen as an art, we need to start treating it that way. What I do is not always for me. What I do is for my audiences. I want them to remember ME and the experience I created for them. There is no greater feeling in the world then to have someone applaud you for something YOU created. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you. I am proud to say that my new product website: http://www.kpmagicproducts.com has been doing very well I thank so many of you for checking it out. I hope you continue to find it of help to you. Tony Brook In Conversation With Ozlen Tuncer - Part 1 -------------------------------------------- Message by Anthony Darkstone Brook - Europe/USA Ozlen Tuncer is well known by many Magicians around the world. He is also known by his Stage name of Dr. Tora. Although he has not personally met them all, he is known. This is due in great part to his skill as an excellent Communicator. Furthermore, the Laws of the Universe have decreed that the social media of Skype, Facebook and emails should play a role in making his name familiar to many of Magic's leading names. His photo and reports often appears in issues of The Linking Ring. Within the International Magic community he is known as a Mentalist but to label him as such is not enough. He possesses a great mind and has the ability to think on several levels simultaneously. He has a Ph.D in Psychology which he puts to good use in his performances. Over the years we have got to know each other and he has generously shared his time and thoughts with me. www.magictora.com ADB: Greetings Ozlen. Thank you for taking the time to converse. OT: Thank you Tony. It is really a pleasure for me. ADB: You once told me that Magic is not a hobby for you, nor is it a job, but a passion ... share with us in full what you mean by that ... OT: Yes that is right. I really don't know how to express it fully in words - Magic is not a hobby, is not a profession for me... It is a passion. It is a passion that I have had since I was born . Seems a bit strange saying I was a Magician from the day I was born but that is the best way I can describe it. I was born as a magician. Magic is my life style. Although I have had considerable success in Industrial Design, by and large, people did not accept me as an "Industrial Designer doing magic" but " A Magician who also is an Industrial Designer". I run my own company, OBA Design & Organisation Ltd. Co. since 1993. I design and organizing related events. I have been on many television shows and finally I had my own TV Program named as Telegiz (meaning Tele-mystery). And then I moved to another documentary program showing the mystical and mysterious places of Turkey named as Telegezi (meaning Tele-Travel ). I have won awards with my TV programs. I had also had columns in the Yeni Asir Daily for almost 7 years. I have also been awarded for my work in my columns and special news. ADB: Give us a little bit about the background that created this passion ... OT: I, am also known as Dr.Tora, but my family name is Tuncer; I was born in Izmir, Turkey. I was fortunate to have attended many of the best schools in Turkey; primarily in Bornova Anadolu Lisesi and in the Middle East Technical University. My first Bachelors degree was from the Department of Industrial Design, by the Faculty of Architecture at M.E.T.U. And I have some more degrees: Bachelor of Journalism, Master of Archeology, and Doctor of Psychology. By the way, I had all my education in English which made me to be classified as bilingual. During my university years I used to earn my living from the stage. It was November 1982, when I first stepped out onto the stage.. In 1989, I founded the METU Magic School. With this little step, I became the first magician who formally taught magic at a University in Turkey. Nevertheless, neither the Club nor the School survived after my graduation. ADB: But you have a burning desire to elevate the Art of Magic to a University Degree course... OT: It is indeed so; it is part of the great passion I feel for the Art. Not many people view it as an art. I know you do and I also know many others who also view it as such ...but , to many more it is just tricks. My passion, my desire.. is to teach Magic, to form a Department within a University that encompasses all the true elements of the Art of Magic. My belief is that the Art of Magic can also stand alongside History, Geography, Industrial Design, Economics etc . We have degrees in Performing Arts and Theatre. My question is :- Why not a full degree in The Art of Magic? End of Part One -------------------------------------------- 9. Michael Finney - $1 Million For Children's Charities -------------------------------------------- Article forwarded on by Mel Kientz (US) Azcentral.com Dry Heat Comedy All-Star Review by Kellie Hwang - The Arizona Republic Arizona - Some people might think Michael Finney is crazy to host two charity shows and a golf tournament in the middle of an Arizona summer. But for the Glendale magician and comedian, his idea has proven wildly successful. His annual Dry Heat Comedy All-Star Review and Dry Heat Classic has reached its 15th year in the Valley, and raised nearly $1 million for children's charities. So for Finney and his celebrity golfers and entertainers, spending a few hot days in the desert is no sweat. Finney started the charity tournament and shows in 1996 after attending many charity golf tournaments, and realizing he could start one of his own and really make a difference. He didn't think the event would last so long. "Back then, I committed to 10 years," he said. "But after the 10th year, I didn't think my job was done. I'll continue to do this as long as there are people in need. It's my little way of giving back. If everything goes right, I'll keep this going for years and years." The three-day event kicks off with a chef's dinner and silent auction on Thursday, and the golf tournament runs Friday and Saturday mornings. This year the tournament features baseball Hall of Famers Ozzie Smith and Rollie Fingers, Chris Rich from television's "Reba," and award winning French magician Kevin James. Golfers are paired with celebrities, and there are still spaces available. Friday night's family-rated show features all magicians, while Saturday night the 18-and-over audience will be entertained by comedians. Finney talks about the success of the event, and what audiences should expect at the shows. Question: Tell us about the charitable aspect of the events. Answer: Every year we've raised money for Gift of Life that helps kids on waiting lists for open heart surgeries. This year we are also donating to Operation Smile, which helps children born with cleft palates. It costs only $240 to fix. I was born with a cleft palate, and had the surgery done within days of being born. It's a simple procedure that alters lives. We are also donating to Operation One Voice, which has a program that helps Special Operations rangers coming back from Afghanistan with recovery . . . My 18-year old is in the Navy so now, so this means a lot to me. Q: What should people expect from the Friday night show? A: One of the guys will shoot a cannonball through a human being, and another will blow up a clown balloon, swallow the entire thing, and then make it come back out. Andre Cole, a grand illusionist, will likely do a transposition of time trick where he is in one place, disappears and reappears in the back of the room. He also levitates himself. Q: How about the Saturday night show? A: It's all stand-up. You'll see one-liners and hear from story tellers. You'll see Denny Johnston, a prop comic, and get intellectual comedy from Tom McTigue, and the dry, deadpan delivery of John Mendoza. It covers the spectrum of all types of comedy. If someone says they didn't laugh at all, I'll give them their money back. There are 13 comedians and they only get seven to 10 minutes each, so people will hear their best material. Q: Why do you think your event has been so successful over the years? A: I think people like what I'm doing, and who I do it for. It doesn't cost you a zillion dollars to attend, like some charity events, and you know all the money is going to a good cause. What else is there to do in Phoenix in the middle of the summer? I bet this will be the best thing happening in town those days. -------------------------------------------- 10. Hawaii's "Godfather Of Magic" Dies -------------------------------------------- Article forwarded on by Mel Kientz (US) by Ron Mizutani - July 22, 2011 Hawaii has lost one of its finest entertainers. Jimmy "Tengu the Magician" Yoshida died on July 3 after a brilliant career. To say he was magical is an understatement. Yoshida was considered the "Godfather of Magic" in the islands. "His stage name was Tengu which as I understand it is a Japanese mischievous spirit," said Curtis Kam. Hawaii's top magicians have studied under him including John Hirokawa and Kam considered to be one of the best coin magicians around. "Now if I wanted the silver dollar in the purse instead all I do is snap my fingers and squeeze the silver dollar becomes the penny and so inside the purse is the silver dollar that's just the way it works." Yoshida owned the old magic shop on Alakea Street. "After a while he realized that the more magicians there were the more magic he would sell so he started teaching classes." said Kam. But his commitment extended beyond Hawaii. Yoshida was instrumental in helping some of magic's biggest names including Lance Burton and David Copperfield. In fact, Copperfield got his professional start at the C'est Si Bon at the Pagoda Hotel when he was 19. "Jimmy was there at the shows making sure he had what he needed and also just to support the guy and they remained friends ever since," said Kam. Yoshida loved performing for children including his own. "Always, and it's funny because I would bring my friends over when they came and we would go in the back and we would say hey grandpa can you do a magic trick for my friends and it was always like that," said granddaughter Shelli Toguchi. His love for magic was passed down to his daughter. "And I enjoy performing as a hobby and I just can't thank him enough for that," said daughter Pam Toguchi. His granddaughter Kristi Toguchi is also a magician today. Yoshida performed until he was 81 and was later inducted into the Society of American Magicians Hall of Fame. He died at the age of 91. "I just can't believe how the magic community has embraced my dad," said daughter Pam. Magicians like Curtis Kam who closes with a card trick in memory of his mentor. Kam promises he could produce any card I chose in between two kings, even allowing me to change my choice. "There you go - makes you feel like you're a part of it I don't know if that's your ace of diamonds or not but we've got to give it the squeeze test and if if we do one card rises up like that. You're killing me!" Services for Yoshida were held Monday, July 25th at 10 a.m. at Hosoi Mortuary with a private burial to follow. -------------------------------------------- 11. Edinburgh Fringe Work -------------------------------------------- Message by Nathan Barker If there are any magician's in Scotland who would like to help out at the James Galea: I Hate Rabbits show (very basic assistant duties needed), please contact Nathan at nathan@jamesgalea.com The show runs from August 5-29 at The Playhouse http://www.edfringe.com/whats-on/cabaret/james-galea-i-hate-rabbits -------------------------------------------- 12. IBM British Ring Convention News -------------------------------------------- Message by Geoffrey Newton PRO pro@britishring.org.uk David Tomkins has joined the line up for the IBM British Ring Convention in September both as a performer on the children's show and as a lecturer on magic for youngsters. His name will be familiar to many of you especially those who read The Magic Circular with his regular contributions entitled Cheeky Dog Chicanery. He has been an entertainer since leaving school at 16 although his first public appearance was at aged 8 as a ventriloquist at Butlin's in front of an audience of 2,000. He has been a member of the British Ring for many years, received his MIMC about 10 years ago and now sits on The Magic Circle board of examiners. David is a very creative performer who, over the years has invented and made many of his own original tricks and routines. The lecture therefore should be of great interest to those conventioneers specialising in this side of the magic business. The ladies afternoon at the convention has again been placed in the very capable organising hands of Julie Llusion. This year another excellent speaker has been sourced in the name of Pam Bosworth from Grantham with "A History of Fashion and Millinery". Pam has been involved in the fashion business since the 1960's when, during her teenage years she began modelling for a variety of shops in the Midlands. In the 1980's a hat hire service was created having seen the demand for millinery items required for one off special occasions. On the strength of this success she branched out into fashion. Ladies had regularly complained to her that expensive outfits they had bought for weddings, christenings etc would not be worn again. Pam started her Premier Dress Agency to sell these designer labels at half price. This talk down memory lane with designs and fashions over the years should prove an interesting afternoon and Pam's motto is if you look good, you'll feel good. More History Of Mystery For this year's More History of Mystery at the IBM British Ring convention in Southport, on Saturday afternoon (24th September) Eddie Dawes will present a programme of speakers who will cover three interesting and very contrasting topics. One of the important magical centenaries of 2011, and certainly the most tragic, is the death of The Great Lafayette in the fire that occurred on 9 May at the Edinburgh Empire Palace Theatre, and which also cost the lives of nine members of his company. Even in death, mystery abounded when the body initially sent to the crematorium turned out not to be that of Lafayette. Over the years much has been written about this eccentric magician, including two new books in 2011, while Will Goldston described him in a phrase that our first speaker, Brian Lead, employs in the title of his talk. Brian, who in the past has written articles on Lafayette, will relate his recent research under the title of 'The Tragic Deaths of Lafayette, The Most Hated Magician Who Ever Lived'. David Devant is widely acclaimed as England's finest conjurer and his name is forever linked with that of J.N.Maskelyne, initially as a member of his Egyptian Hall Company and for ten years his partner at St George's Hall. Devant was the first President of The Magic Circle (1905-06) and donated his personal library and collection of posters, photographs, press albums and ephemera to the new Society, whose current Archivist, David Hibberd, has for some years been working assiduously to catalogue and organise this treasure trove of material. David will be presenting and commenting on a selection of photographs from the large Devant archive under the title of 'A Glimpse of the David Devant Collection of Photographs from The Magic Circle Archive'. Several years ago, in Eddie's programme at a Southport Convention, Jon Marshall spoke on Sideshows having a magical theme. Since 2004 Jon and his Sideshow Illusions team have restored seven of showman Jon Gresham's 1950s sideshows, including, the Girl in the Goldfishbowl, The Mummy, The Headless Lady and the Butterfly Girl. In this illustrated talk on 'Secrets of the Sideshows'. Jon will describe how this has been achieved and how many of the illusion principles used date back to the 1860s and still thrill and amaze audiences today. Going To Southport? Don't forget your passport! Registration Officer John Palfreyman has arranged for all conventioneers to receive the Southport Passport. This handy little booklet contains an assortment of vouchers. Some restaurants are offering a free glass of wine whilst others offer a free bottle! There also dining vouchers for up to 25% off meals at some local establishments. A handy town centre street map is also included in this worthwhile publication. The convention is a very packed programme but if you have time for a short diversion from magic you can have a buy one get one free game at Premier Bowl and Laser. Linking Britain is a new book just completed by IBM British Ring member Roy Field documenting the history of the society. This A4 publication of about 30,000 words is double columned with approx 60 pages and 70 plus illustrations. It tells of the first edition of the Budget in 1929 and the 14 editors who have produced it through the years. Information is there from the first convention in Cheltenham in 1931 through to modern times. These are classified into gala shows, competitions, late night shows etc in over the 80 years of existence. It goes on sale at the special price of £10 at the British Ring convention in Southport . It is sure to be a welcome addition to the library of any magician. Roy is a retired chartered librarian who has researched the material well and brought Linking Britain out to celebrate the 75th convention of the British Ring. If any family or friends approach you with "What is this British Ring we hear about?" then let them read (or buy a copy of) Linking Britain. Competition Judges for the British Ring Shield Stage Competition have been announced. Chairman, John Palfreyman who is the Assistant Secretary and Registration Officer is teamed with Ring President Keith Cooper, and Vanni Pulé from Malta the International President. Also from overseas, author, broadcaster and lecturer Tony Brook from Portugal. Stuart and Jayne Loughland from Safire. Our own Chief Steward Don Beattie and Brian Lead who is equally well known in the Modern Mystic League and Northern Magic Circle complete the panel. Anthony Darkstone Brook (also known as Tony Brook) will appear at the British Ring convention this year in the role of a talk show host with guests Jason Andrews, Shawn Farquahar, Joe M. Turner and Michael Finney. Tony is very experienced in this field having produced many similar activities in the United States for The Society of American Magicians and other overseas institutions. This Portugal based American has many other talents including those of a performer, author, producer and broadcaster. The event has all the hallmarks of a very interesting part of the convention and Tony promises a special surprise finale. The Convention runs from 22nd - 25th September 2011 in Southport England and details are on www.magicconvention.co.uk -------------------------------------------- 13. Romhany Report - Video Blog Is Andrew Gerard -------------------------------------------- Message by Paul Romhany (NZ) This week's guest on my weekly Video Blog is Andrew Gerard. Andrew has been making a name for himself as the go to guy for anybody who performs on TV. He is the only person to have consulted for all three of the major TV Magic Super Stars out there today including Chris Angel, David Blaine and most recently was head consultant for Keith Barry's new TV series. I have spent many hours sitting with Andrew and a group of magicians and all of us had no idea how he did anything!! He was not brought up in the world of magic like most of us, which is why he thinks outside the box. Andrew not only performs one of his incredible versions of ACAAN but also shares a really cool trick that you can do anywhere. I also review a brand new effect by Harry Monk called "Notion" which was released this week, as well as a few of my own products including Multiplying Bottles book.
