Editor's Message -------------------------------------------- Magic New Zealand is coming out very early this week as I have a full-on weekend and the amount of current news that has come through we would like to share now. Remember if you have any magic news drop me a line: AW@Alan-Watson.com -------------------------------------------- 2. Retraction Regarding The Story About "The Pendragons" -------------------------------------------- Message by Mel Kientz (US) To Alan Watson, Editor, Magic New Zealand Hi Alan: Sorry about having to print a retraction regarding the story about "The Pendragons". After placing the story in Magician's Life, I did receive several emails regarding authenticity so I emailed the newspaper that printed the original story and both Jonathan and Charlotte separately. I have not received any response from any of them nor any of their representatives. In re-reading the story, the first paragraph does not in fact mention Charlotte and I suppose that it could mean that only Jonathan is doing the show... although I am not certain of this fact now either... The original author (Michelle Loubon -Trinidad & Tobago Guardian Online) could have been just filling space by going to The Pendragon's web site for information: See: http://www.thependragons.net/home.html The original story appeared both in print and on the Internet. There is a second story that was published today: http://guardian.co.tt/news/2011/06/11/pendragon-set-weave-his-magic This story by Camille Clarke in the same newspaper - mentions the show but does not mention Charlotte. I must apologize for any misinformation that may have been inferred by Magician's Life. You may want to mention that Charlotte is in fact working June 25th and 26th Lindsay Community Theater in Central California. Here is the link to this story: http://www.recorderonline.com/news/shows-48971-lindsay-pendragon.html Again I am sorry for any inconvenience caused by passing this story along to you. Great News From Jonathan Pendragon -------------------------------------------- Message by John R. Browne III and Jonathan Pendragon To: Browne III Cc: Chin-Chin Subject: The Props Dear Jack I have just returned from Trinidad. The illusions were in good condition and I used them in the three shows I presented. The Origami will need to be refurbished, but nothing major, mostly hardware and paint. As I mentioned it was in good enough condition to perform. I also presented Fire Cage and the Sword Suspension. They too need a little work, but functioned well in performance. The show went extremely well and the producers were so pleased that they inquired about a return engagement. The work of mounting a new show and training new performers to do the illusions with me was exhausting in the short time we had in Trinidad. My crew put in numerous 16 hour days to get the job done. West McDonough is in contact with the shipping agents here and in Trinidad. The props should be in transit in the next few days. They are being shipped via sea and land, it takes about three weeks to get them back to Los Angeles. My team, including West, Jacosa Kato, Tina Lee (Mystina) and my brother Mark all worked above and beyond in order to make the show a success and get these props home. I am very proud of them. As you know I never got any of the money Charlotte received for these illusions and never gave my permission for their sale. Even so I made it a moral imperative to honor the sale and get these props to their new owners. Due to my personal feelings about two of the illusions which are my own creations and my fondness for Jim Steinmeyer's masterpiece Origami, this was all very emotional for me. Without West's support the experience would have been overwhelming. I will keep you informed. Jonathan Pendragon ------------------------------------ Reply from: John R. Browne III To: 'Jonathan Yarbrough' Cc: 'Chin-Chin'; Alan Watson Subject: RE: The Props Jonathan, --This is an incredible story, which brings tears of happiness to my eyes as I type this reply... You have my total admiration and my utmost respect for all you have done over a period of many months to right a wrong, culminating by your traveling all the way back to Trinidad to personally recover for Chin-Chin (and for Chip Romero I presume) the illusions which they "bought" from Charlotte but never received. And congratulations on your three successful shows in Trinidad, and for once again performing your marvelous illusions for appreciative audiences! It sounds like you have a wonderful group of performers backing you, including Mystina. (This past December Tony Wilson and Alan Watson took Jan and me to see Chuck Jones' show in Auckland, New Zealand, in which Chuck was assisted by Chipper Jones and by Mystina. She sure gets around!) Even though the props are not yet in the hands of their rightful owners, the fact that their shipment from Trinidad back to Los Angeles is imminent is significant enough for me, with your kind permission previously given, to report the wonderful good news to Alan Watson for his publication in Magic New Zealand, which I am now doing by copying him with this email exchange. Jonathan, on behalf of Chin-Chin I thank you from the bottom of my heart for finding a way to arrange for him to get the original Pendragon Origami Illusion he paid for. This obviously involved much hard work as well as personal sacrifice. You deserve a lot of credit from the world wide magic community. My top hat is off to you for such a tremendous effort! Kind regards, Jack Browne -------------------------------------------- 4. Marco Tempest Demonstrating His Multivid Software -------------------------------------------- Message by David Britland (UK) It's a video from Marco Tempest demonstrating his Multivid software. I wrote the script, Marco created the magical choreography and art director Kevin Blanc did the marvellous graphic animations. This software enables you to synchronise video across multiple iOS devices. So it's useful for magicians and other visual artists looking to create all manner of video installations. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jvXqXcVF5S8 The software is free and can be downloaded from the iTunes app store. Best Wishes David -------------------------------------------- 5. More Remarkable Magic # 39 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message by Nick Lewin (US) A real magic store to savor. On a recent visit to Victoria, B.C. in Canada I visited a really great Magic store and enjoyed a visit with its owner. The owner is Murray Hatfield who is considered by many to be Canada's top magician. It was a delightful reminder of how much fun a visit to a brick and mortar magic shop can be. Murray is famous around the World for his annual touring magic show that travels across Canada, following both figuratively and literally in the footsteps of the Reveen touring shows. Like Peter's show it has now become part of the fabric of growing up Canadian for entire generations of Canadians. I have been aware of his work for years and have many friends in common with him. Situated at 688 Broughton Street, 'Murray's Trick & Joke Shop' is located in the heart of beautiful Victoria, it is easy to find and like many other magic shops has quite a history to it. It started life over 30 years ago as 'Crazy Frank's,' Frank was a guy who loved jokes and it was the place in town every kid got his first Whoopee Cushion. When Frank retired the shop became the 'Victoria Trick & Joke Shop,' but after a few years it's owners wanted to sell it but eventually just shut it down and put the stock up for auction. However you can't stop a good magic shop that easily. At this time Victoria magician Tony Eng, and his wife Ann decided to give it a try and went to the previous owners and offered them a very good price for the business, although they could have bought it much more cheaply in auction. The trade-off that they requested was that the previous owner work with them for a few months to teach them the retail side of the shop. This turned out to be a valuable idea and they learned a great deal in a very limited amount of time. Often people don't fully include experience into their budget consideration, Tony did so with great success. The shop now became 'Tony's Trick & Joke Store' and quickly became an iconic business. Coupled with an increase in the emphasis on magic in the store and with Tony performing literally hundreds of shows a year, both Tony and the shop became household names and a must-see stop for tourists and locals for the next 20 years. Hatfield had known Tony Eng for over thirty years and visited with him in Victoria many times during their touring and about 6 years ago was somewhat surprised when Tony and Ann told of their plans to retire. They also asked if Murray and his wife Teresa would like to purchase and run the store. They had an immediate response to the question though; "NO!" They had no interest in running a magic shop whatsoever! Ah, never say never. The next day they started to slowly re-examine the situation and realized that the idea had some very real merit and shouldn't be so quickly put aside. The move to Victoria from Calgary was a large plus point when they took the climate into consideration. They took a deep breath, said yes, and the results have been a huge success. I travel the world and always enjoy visiting the magic stores along the way and have developed a simple three-part way of grading them. 1. Are they friendly and inviting? 2. Can I get the 'replacement' items I need on a regular basis? 3. Can they sell me something new and exciting that I didn't know about before visiting the shop? I can wholeheartedly answer "Yes," to all three of these questions about 'Murray's Trick & Joke Shop' and even better than that I got to spend some time actually becoming an actual (not just a Facebook friend) friend of Murray Hatfield. As with any magic shop, it is the magician behind the store who makes it special. Murray was so friendly and such a joy to chat with that I can't wait to visit with him again. I strongly suggest that you do the same thing if life is nice enough to leave you with some spare time in Victoria. Murray also keeps a strong Internet presence on the web at www.MagicTrick.com Feel free to drop me an email at nicklewin@me.com -------------------------------------------- 6. Prop vs. Performer - #214 - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com Many times I hear magicians on forums or at conventions discussing why a certain trick or effect plays so well. You may hear something like "Why does the Instant Magician or Fantasy Magician play so well?" Seems like an innocent question to ask. Discussion is a great thing as it allows us all to learn. My only fear is that questions aimed in this fashion tend to head people down the wrong path. So if anyone ever asked me why The Instant Magician is so powerful in a show my answer may actually shock them a bit. The answer is simply "It isn't." It may not be powerful in a show. Like anything The Fantasy Magician or Instant Magician is simply a prop. Nothing more and nothing less. A prop alone does not make anything great or lousy. The prop is just a tool and means in which to be creative. However, YOU are the one that makes any "trick" a great routine. YOU are the one that makes it fun and entertaining to an audience. The prop itself does nothing. Even any standard effect/trick does nothing for you unless you are creative enough to develop a routine that fits who you are and fits your show and personality. Like any effect, it can bomb or play great. The choice is based on what you decide to do with it. In the right hands, ANY trick or effect can be a great routine that plays wonderfully . I also would hate to feel that anyone would simply do the routine that comes with any trick or effect you purchase. Sure you have a right to do that routine because you have paid for it. I just would hate to see anyone just mimic or copy what they have seen someone else do. This does nothing for creativity and certainly does not allow the routine to fit who your character is and your personal style. Like any effect, learn to take this trick and apply your own creativity to it. Make it your own. So yes any effect can end up becoming a great routine. However it is only great when it is in the hands of someone willing to spend the time to create something that is fun and unique to themselves. So the question should not be just "why does this routine play so well ALL the time?" In many cases, it CAN play well but it is not a given that it does. A routine performed exactly as is purchased, does not always guarantee you a huge applause. There are many things one needs to do in any routine to make it "play". So if we are going to evaluate a routine, it would only be fair to also explain what needs to happen to ensure it plays well? What is it that has to be done to make it play? The only logical answer is a simple one. The single most important ingredient in the success of any routine is simply...YOU! We are each different and as unique as the many tricks and effects in magic. What is right for one may not be for another. You must define who you are as a performer. More importantly, you must define who you are NOT. By doing this you can start to realize how tricks can be customized in your hands to create something special that is as unique as you are. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. Tony Brook In Conversation With John Teo - Part 1 -------------------------------------------- Message by Anthony Darkstone Brook - Europe/USA John Teo is TVP for The IBM and President of The Great Wong Ring 115 in Singapore. He is well-respected in Asia and his advice and contributions are always sought on many major magic projects in that part of the world. He has an excellent reputation as a Competition judge and his skills have been called upon several times at many Asian conventions. He has been for many years and continues to be a stellar point of reference and source of Magical knowledge to many magicians. Many major International names in Magic hold him in high esteem. John Teo is a good friend to all those who know him. He is a true gentleman. He is kind, generous and lots of fun to be with; he is a very experienced Magician and an Internationally distinguished and renowned Management Trainer. In May 2010, I was invited to perform at a private event in Singapore and whilst there I was honored to be invited to lecture for IBM Ring 115 and to give a workshop. Prior to my arrival, I made contact with John Teo and during my stay, I spent several days in his excellent company. He and his wife were gracious hosts and delightful company. Singapore is a delightful place. Anyone who has visited Singapore can testify to the vast and indeed numerous places to enjoy good food. As a rule, most Singaporeans have two passions. Hard work and good food. Knowing my passion for Asian cuisine, John and his wife made sure that I was well taken care of in that area. TB: Hello John . Thanks for taking the time to meet up and chat a while. JT: Hello Tony. My pleasure. Always good spending time with you. TB: John, as you know in my lecture, one of the effects that I share, involves a banana as a lie-detector. You were kind enough to say some kind words about that and even did so publicly in the November 2010 issue of The Linking Ring. I bring up the subject of bananas because in a way that is what got you started in Magic . Share some of that with us please.. JT: Yes Tony, you are right . It was a long time ago but yes, it was a banana that got me interested in Magic. Or to be precise. Two bananas! When I was in Primary School, there was a lull period after a major examination. This was meant for teachers to mark papers. Students were told to bring board or other types of games to play in class or books to read. When I was in Primary 4 (10 years old), during one of these lull periods, my form teacher showed us a magic trick. It was the cutting the banana in half without peeling the skin trick. He told an interesting story for this. He said that if an identical twin were to live far apart from one another, say, one lived in England and one in Singapore, then if one had an acute stomach ache, at exactly the same time, the other twin would experience the same sensation with his stomach in his own country of residence. He showed us a pair of banana that was stuck together, and told us this is a twin banana. He pulled them apart, took a knife and cut one banana cleanly in half. He asked one of us to peel off the skin of the other unharmed banana. To everybody's surprise, the other banana was found cleanly sliced in half, too. I went back home and pestered my mum to purchase such a banana for me. It was not easy to locate two bananas which were grown stuck together. After a few weeks, she managed to find one and bring it home to me. I was so excited and told her about identical twins. I pulled both bananas apart, and used a knife to cut one of them. I asked her to peel open the skin of the other banana. She did so but nothing happened! It was such an anti-climax! I was both puzzled and disappointed. End of Part 1. -------------------------------------------- 8. A New Trick From Patrick Page - The Pat Tube! -------------------------------------------- Message by Janette Page (daughter) The family of the late Pat Page now run The Patrick Page Magic Company, to celebrate his life and sell authorised versions of his work. We have just launched The Pat Tube, Pat's own variation of the dye tube gimmick. Perfect for bare hand vanishes and exchanges of silks etc, Pat got the idea from something he saw in The Magic Circle Museum. The Pat Tube is slightly wider and heavier than usual and has a sliding platform. The weight makes it much easier for "ditching", for example into a Topit Vanisher or into the offside pocket, as Pat often did. The Pat Tube was made for him (and now us) by Roy Johnson. He used it but it has not been marketed until now. The Pat Tube is available exclusively from Patrick Page Magic at www.patrickpagemagic.co.uk (£20 incl worldwide p&p) Take a look at our website. It's not just about selling! We have a photo gallery, a memorial page, and a Pat Facts page. We also send out a monthly newsletter, which features stories and information about Pat and his magic. Thank You Janette Page -------------------------------------------- 12. News From KIDabra International -------------------------------------------- Message by Mark Daniel Strange But True Department - The Rabbit Police Revisited Tim Sonefelt broke the wacky but true story of "The Rabbit Police" 3 years ago in The KIDabra Journal. It was a balanced look at what some call "the stalking and harassment" of children's performers in the US who use rabbits in their performances by a division of the United States Department of Agriculture. In a related, now in the news story, a couple in Nixa, Missouri who raised rabbits and sold them to petting zoos were fined in excess of $90,000.00 dollars for apparently selling too many rabbits in a calendar year (more than $500 worth). Well, tons of folks are up in arms over the ludicrousness of this and a blogger named Bob McCarty (bobmccarty.com) who has written extensively about the story, discovered our article and asked for permission to rerun it. The piece was picked up by many national news websites in late May and on June 2, was much discussed on the top syndicated radio show in the US- The Rush Limbaugh Show with guest host, Mark Stiyn. -------------------------------------------- 13. MagiCaresTM The Magic Charity -------------------------------------------- Message by Joan Lawton (US) If you've ever had the experience of needing a hospice worker to help you and someone you love through a terminal illness, you know what an amazing job they do. You cannot get through the process without them, their strength and their kindness. You want to give back, in some way, for what they have done for you and your loved one - and yet, you don't know how. All you know is that you are not cut out for the same kind of work. I know I felt that way when my husband was dying. Oh, I made a couple of donations to healthcare organizations - and still do - but it's not doing special for the hospice workers or for the special service they gave your patient. Well, here's a chance: My friend, Paul Stone, is producing a show called "100 Years of Magic at the London Palladium." He wants to fill as much of the theatre as possible with hospice and healthcare workers for whom tickets have been donated. The seats are NOT expensive. Just one seat is as low as $40 or as high as $80. If you itemize your U.S. tax returns, this donation is even deductible as MagiCaresTM The Magic Charity is an IRS-approved 501 (c)(3) charitable organization. Please visit www.palladiummagic/charitytickets.html to make a donation so that hospice and healthcare workers in the London area can attend the show. One more thought: Wouldn't it be great if someone would do something like this for hospice and healthcare workers in the U.S.? -------------------------------------------- 15.
