Editor's Message -------------------------------------------- The highlight for Michele and I this week was to attend the Martin Lewis lecture in Auckland (Martin was accompanied by his vivacious wife Suzie). The lecture was well attended, including two magicians travelling 7 hours to attend and the general feeling was that it was thoroughly enjoyable and fun. Martin's magic is always very practical that can be used in the real world. Now we can see why he was receiving rave reviews from the Australians when he lectured in Perth, Adelaide, Sydney and Melbourne recently. ------------------- Pleased to hear from Richard Kaufman the all copies of David Berglas's new book "The Berglas Effects" (except the deluxe editions) have now been shipped! Coming Up In The June 2011 M-U-M -------------------------------------------- By Michael Close, Editor With the June 2011 issue, the S.A.M. commemorates the 100th anniversary (or birthday if you prefer) of M-U-M, another milestone for the world's most prestigious magic organization. If you're curious as to what was happening in the organization a century ago, Tom Ewing fills you in with his article, "A Hundred Years Ago in The Society of American Magicians". In addition, Tom discusses Germain the Wizard in his regular Nielsen Gallery column. The subject of this month's cover story is Hank Moorehouse, who will be honored (and rightly so) at the S.A.M. national convention in Pittsburgh this July. Hank has had a long career in magic as a dealer, a performer, and as one of the preeminent producers of magic convention shows in the world. As you'll read in the article by Brad Jacobs, Hank has provided many performers with their first convention performance opportunities. He also played a huge part in the booking of talent for the 2009 FISM convention in Beijing. You'll find a variety of card magic in the June M-U-M. Chris Wasshuber heads down the home stretch with his series on do-it-yourself gaffed card making. The series wraps up in the July issue. Nonagenarian William Kahn has a knack for fundraising (he's raised a half-million dollars for a Clearwater, Florida, soup kitchen), but he also enjoys creating simple, effective tricks. Two of his card routines are featured this month. Dennis Loomis moves from the stage to the close-up arena with some excellent work on the Kelly bottom placement. And Ian Kendall's June Basic Training lesson focuses on the classic force. If you've ever wanted to learn this most useful move, Ian will put you on the right track. Also in the June M-U-M: The Balloon Guys (Tom Vorjohan and Daniel Herron) present a spectacular balloon model that you actually construct around the guest of honor at a party. This model will be a tremendous asset to anyone who does a "balloon show" as part of his or her magic show. The Quick Look Book Nook features four excerpts from Rune's World by Joshua Jay. Many of you will know Rune as an outstanding coin man, but he also has a wild-and-crazy sense of humor, aptly demonstrated by his stage magic. Speaking of Josh Jay, his Under Over column offers some video suggestions for young magicians (he discussed a book list in the May issue) and gives parents some guidance for using contracts. Steve Marshall's I Left My Cards at Home column features an offbeat coin production by Doug Lippert. It's almost self-working and uses a gaff you probably already own. Bill Duncan and the staff of Informed Opinion give you the lowdown (nine pages worth) on the recent products released to the magic marketplace. Card magicians will find my review of the highly-anticipated The Berglas Effects by Richard Kaufman and David Berglas to be of particular interest. Bruce Kalver keeps you up to date on the technical side of things with his Tech Tricks column. Plus more great columns from Norman Beck, George Schindler, Larry Hass, Aldo Colombini, and Rod Danilewicz. All this and more is available to members of The Society of American Magicians in the June 2011 M-U-M. Membership information is available at www.magicsam.com. -------------------------------------------- 4. More Remarkable Magic # 36 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message by Nick Lewin (US) Working on cruise ships part 3. I am often asked about the best way to get work onboard a cruise ship. Curiously enough I am almost never asked about what to do when you have got your first job working on a luxury liner. It is a very different world out there on the high seas, and it needs to be approached carefully and systematically to ensure that you get booked back again. I wrote a very tongue in cheek column for the Linking Ring a couple of years ago on this topic. I got some wonderful reactions from pros that were involved in this kind of work. They appreciated how much real information I delivered between the lines in the article and enjoyed the way I turned the topic on its head to achieve my goals. However, I suspect that I may have been a little oblique for others reading the piece so I decided to remove my tongue from my cheek and retackle the subject in a more straightforward manner. There have been several books published on this topic but I can't help feeling that they often stressed the obvious at the expense of the practical. I will give you a key part of the 'Nick Lewin Crash Course' in the next few paragraphs. Cruise ships are the nightclubs of this era of entertainment. In the old days a performer would schlep around the country to different cities so that he would be able to work to different audiences. Now the ship does the schlepping and the audiences change because of the itineraries. The performer still has to get to his venue of course so sign up for your frequent flyer clubs. I performed on my first cruise ship in 1969 and have continued to embrace this arena of work ever since. The business has changed greatly recently and the working conditions have improved vastly. The larger cruise ships now contain showrooms that rival your local Performing Arts Center. The sound, lighting and stages are very sophisticated and if you know how to, can be used to dramatically improve your show. Generally speaking to get a booking on a ship you are going to need to travel two 45-minute shows. It doesn't mean you will actually get to perform two 45-minute shows but you might. I am writing this column in the Grand Lobby of the Queen Victoria where I was booked to do one show. On a ship your show is usually repeated twice so that early and late seating dinner guests can catch them with ease. At least, that is how it should have been on this particular three day run. However nothing runs quite that smoothly in real life. As I was going through my tech rehearsal the Production Manager informed me that there had been a magician who had already performed that cruise. He had featured a Torn & Restored Newspaper, which is the closer to my show. I immediately adjusted my show and changed my closing effect to the one from my second show. No problems. After I finished my shows I was told that in fact they would need me to perform 15 minutes the next night in a variety show. No problem-I can dodge bullets for 15 minutes! However the next day at my tech rehearsal I was informed that the singer had lost her voice and could I do 35 minutes to close the bill. It worked out very well, but the entire business required a great deal of flexibility. I described this episode in some detail but in verbal shorthand I could just have said, 'Prepare to be flexible." Drop me an email at nicklewin@me.com -------------------------------------------- 6. Is Children's Magic "Art" - #211 - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com Well it is a great question and one which has been asked and debated for years. Just bring up the question of "what is art?" and you are bound to get into heated debates. My goal here is not to cause a debate but to simply express my own views on the topic based on my own background and opinion. I am both an artist (illustrator and designer) and also a magical entertainer. How I view the subject of children's magic as art is different than most view it. I see things from both perspectives because I have a foot in each. To even answer this question we should probably try and define "art" as it exists in the dictionary. "Art is a noun meaning the quality, production, expression, or realm, according to aesthetic principles, of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance." That is pretty interesting when one looks at it. I think the key there is the phrase "according to aesthetic principles, of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance." This alone means to me that art is subjective by nature. What one person likes another may not. What one sees as art another may not. Even how each person views art is different. Anyone looking at a work of art gets something entirely different out of it. So is Children's Magic an Art? Yes and no. It is all in how you view it. But more importantly it is how your audience views it. I always like to say that as an entertainer, I am the artist. My show is the canvas of which I display before the audience for their acceptance. It is the audience who defines what I do as art or not. It is the audience who decides if what I do is beautiful, appealing and more than ordinary. With this in mind, it is up to me to try and create "works of art" that appeal to the audiences I perform for. So how does one do this? Well any artist uses the "tools" of the trade to create a masterpiece. As a children's entertainer, I must acquire these tools and learn how to use them effectively. The more tools I have, and the more I understand the tools, only then can I begin to create. So how can a children's performer hope to have the audience see what we do as art? Well the first is that we MUST be willing to TREAT what we do as art. If you do not take what you do as art, then how and why should anyone else? If you are not serious about putting your all into what you do and being truly creative, then do not expect an audience to view you anything more than ordinary. You must also be willing to think outside the box. By definition, exact imitation is not essentially art. Being "influenced" by someone is different. All artist are influenced. However, we cannot allow influence to become imitation. As a children's entertainer, I cannot expect to have what I do be seen as art if what I am doing is the exact same thing as everyone else. If it is the same old thing, then it is certainly not more than ordinary significance. If you want your audience to view what you do as art, then you must be willing to get off your butt and think for yourself. You must force yourself to be creative. You must in essence define who you are as an artist and allow your style and personality to be your own. A great artist is one because their style is very well defined and unique to them. An artist touches the emotions of an audience. When a person views something as art, they do so because there is something about it that moves them in some way. As an entertainer, this can take many forms from laughter to shock to sadness to happiness and everything in between. We make connections with the audience. We engage them. We move them. So when you walk out on that stage, remember one important thing...YOU are the canvas. Display your work proudly and the audience will decide if it is worthy. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you. I am proud to announce the launch of my new product website: http://www.kpmagicproducts.com. I hope you find it of help to you. Please stay tuned to the site for sales, news and upcoming product launches. 7. Tony Brook In Conversation With Valerie - Part 7 -------------------------------------------- Message by Anthony Darkstone Brook - Europe/USA TB : Yes indeed. The method you use is pure genius. I was totally blown away when I saw you do it for the first time... and I was in the wings ! I love all your work but for me the absolute highlight is your levitation, totally original and of course pure genius again in the way you constructed the prop. I am very privileged that you kindly shared the secret with me. Because I know the secret, it actually increases my admiration for the entire illusion. You may remember, I wrote an article way back entitled " The French Girl's Legs". V : Thank you Tony. You are very kind. And yes thank you for that article. I enjoyed it very much. And yes, as I was saying earlier, the whole "Legs" illusion idea came about because I was working on some sewing in front of a mirror and accidentally pricked myself with the needle, my leg shot up, I saw the reflection and Voila! a new idea was born. TB : You are very welcome. I enjoyed writing that article. I have been privileged to know some great illusion builders in my time and I have to tell you, in fact I already have a while back, well. never mind. it is worth saying again. ? the methodology and concept is that you use for the umbrella and the "legs"... well, quite frankly. is pure genius. And I am pleased to say that many of the more knowledgeable Magicians also agree with me about your work. As you know, last year, we sadly lost a good friend of ours, Ali Bongo. He and I often chatted about different aspects of Magic. The last time I saw him we were in Scotland together and over breakfast with Shirley Ray (Past President of The IBM British Ring 25) and Pat Page ( also sadly, he too has passed) we spent a long while listening to him talk full of admiration for you and your prop making skills. High praise indeed from one such as him. V : Yes dear Ali was a very kind and gracious man. We who knew him will miss him greatly. You know we were with him when he first took ill in Paris. A wonderful man. TB : Yes he was. A sad loss. Let's turn to another mutual friend, Norbert Ferré. Do you recall the fun time we all had in New Orleans? V : Yes indeed I do. You, Norbert, Gilles, me, your wife and son. I still smile when I recall dear Norbert finding his shrimp too spicy and you squirting lemon juice all over his plate. TB : Yes it was after the S.A.M convention at the Fairmont Hotel. We were at a party at Gary and Fay Hughes house. That's a story for another time. Afterwards, we all decided to all head out to dinner. On the way back, we stopped at a couple of bars and at one in particular Norbert started an impromptu act with a lit cigarette which blew the bartender away. You then joined in with some amazing Close-Up card Magic. My son, Gilles and I followed. That was an amazing time and no one in the bar knew who we were and they got a wonderful show from World Class talent for FREE! Like I said your Close-Up Magic was amazing! V : I remember that well. It was a very wonderful evening. I actually love performing Close-Up Magic but mostly everyone knows me for my stage work. But, I am happy to tell you that I equally comfortable performing intimate Close -Up Magic as I am on stage. Nowadays, how do you say it?! "A gig's a gig!" We all have to work twice ... hmmm! maybe three times as hard doing different kinds of Magic. Development Of A New 2-Way Envelope Spectators Can Handle -------------------------------------------- Message by Wayne Rogers (NZ) There are many "multiple out" envelopes in the magic literature and on the market. But few can be handled by the spectator without them discovering the workings. I have used a number of switching envelopes over the years. All of them, (except for a couple that needed to be cut open) required me to open them, even though the spectator might actually remove the contents. For one particular routine I worked on I wanted a virtually "hands off method" for switching two sets of written instructions. I eventually hit on the method using a normal manila, letter size end opening envelope. I have used it with success since 2008. At the time I was developing this particular envelope I was aware of the Ted Lesley Teleport Envelope, the Kismit Envelope and the self-sealing envelopes used in some Card to Wallet effects. I had also came across the double envelope used by Sean Taylor (similar to one explained by Richard Osterlind on his DVD series), The Mike Porstmann Double Decker Envelope (Now used by Martin Lewis in his Technicolor Prediction) the Ray Piatt Envelope, and other postal pouch type switching devices from the likes of Lee Earle and James Biss. At the time I developed the envelope there were certain conditions I wanted to meet. I wanted a standard manila end opening envelope. The spectator had to hold the envelope and remove the prediction themselves. That was top priority. The prediction slip had to be large and easily read by the spectator. No small pieces of paper and no folding of the prediction. The envelope was not to be sealed. I did not want the spectator or myself to have to tear the envelope open or use scissors as you do with a full Teleport Envelope. The envelope could be reused 50% of the time depending on which side was opened. Preparation had to be simple. Having designed the envelope and started using in all my shows, over the years I corresponded with a few people about it and was pleased to find that no one had seen an envelope quite like it before. I wrote up a short explanation of how the envelope worked, along with a sample routine idea and had it published in "Magicana" The New Zealand Magic Magazine back in 2008. The Automatic 2 - Way Prediction Envelope is now a 30 page manuscript, fully detaining the envelope's simple construction and handling. Included are routines and ideas contributed by myself, Paul Romhany, Andrew Gerard, Greg Arce, Richard Osterlind, Stefan Olschewski and Luca Volpe. The envelope design employs known "magic" principles. I make no claim to these principles, but should point out that the combination of ideas used in the design and construction of my envelope were developed independently. Comments from performers in the industry been very complimentary: "Wayne Rogers has developed the ultimate switching envelope for when you need the spectator to do the work. This is excellent" - Ben Harris "I have seen, made, and even created some pretty tricky envelopes in my time, Wayne's concept here is not only practical, but as close to perfect as I could imagine an envelope could be" - Andrew Gerard Mentalist/Hypnotist TV Producer "This envelope opens up so many amazing possibilities - one of the best mentalist tools I've seen in a very long time!" - Paul Romhany "Thanks for sending over the manuscript. There are a lot of good ideas there!"- Richard Osterlind The manuscript is a commercial release available as an INSTANT DOWNLOAD from http://www.nzmagic.com/mentalismproducts.html -------------------------------------------- 10. Broken Wand - Max Hapner -------------------------------------------- Message by Lindsay Smith Max Hapner passed away May 10, 2011 in Colorado Springs, CO, U.S.A. He was 80. His services were conducted there on May 17. John Bryan, longtime friend and former assistant on his full-evening shows, delivered a beautiful eulogy with many delightful stories of his days with Max and his wife, Salli. The Broken Wand ceremony was conducted with dignity by Bill "Quig" Wysong, another longtime friend and dean of Assembly #170, the Pikes Peak Prestidigitators. Over 50 years as partners and performing professionals, Max and his wife, Salli, performed their dynamic, fast-paced illusion show, "Magicadabra," that took them to 48 states, Canada and England. They enjoyed a remarkable career (actually three careers: school shows and assemblies, theme park productions, and touring a full-evening show). They retired from active performing in October 2005. John Moehring credits Max with pioneering the field of theme park magic shows. In a three-part series in MAGIC magazine (June through August 1995), Moehring traced theme park history, stating, "Max Hapner was the first magician to produce magic shows for a theme park." Max got his start in magic when he was in grade school in Caldwell, Kansas, his birth place. Loring Campbell was the first magician he ever saw. He later went to college in Wichita and met Joe Stevens, also a student back then. Joe and Max were good friends ever since. In the early '70s, Max developed the "Bubble Act," more accurately known as "Bubbles, Bangles and Beads." It became a signature piece that took Max & Salli to London for the Magic Circle and on the BBC, Hollywood and Milt Larsen's It's Magic, plus I.B.M., S.A.M. and regional conventions around the country. Those who were fortunate enough to have seen the Bubble Act will always remember it as one of the most beautiful 12-minute acts in magic. Writing in M-U-M about the 1973 combined I.B.M./S.A.M. convention in Miami Beach, Kirk Stiles said, "The most beautiful act at the convention, and one of the loveliest I've ever seen, was presented by Max Hapner with the glorious assistance of Salli. Dignity, beauty and spectacle - without a flaw." In Genii, Bill Larsen Jr. wrote, "Max Hapner and Salli can open or close any show I ever care to produce...they evoked the delight of the packed house." Max said that Salli was a great assistant from the beginning, but that she always credited Carol Roy, Marvyn's wife, with setting an example of how an assistant could be an integral part of a magic show -- more than just handing the magician props. "That's been our philosophy of working together," said Max in a feature article in MAGIC magazine (February 2005). "We've been a team, not slave and master, as so many magicians have done with their assistants." He was also a close friend of the late Paul Fox in his later years. Max is survived by Salli, his wife of 55 years, a truly gifted artist herself. Joe Stevens, of Stevens Magic, said, "He was truly one of the 'Magi'.as Joe Berg used to call anyone who devoted their life to the art of magic full time and paid the price for the love of it. Max was a 'true Magi.'" -------------------------------------------- 18. Wayne Houchin Lecture @ Diamond's Magic -------------------------------------------- Message by Diamond's Magic 515 Lowell Street Peabody, MA Sunday, July 24th @7:00 PM Fee: $20 RSVP: 978/535-8950 "The more you pay attention to what he's doing, the more you can't help but think that you are watching something extraordinary in the making." - Synthesis Magazine Synthesis Magazine wrote that about Wayne Houchin in 2004. One year before he was hired as a consultant on the hit national television series "Criss Angel: Mindfreak." Two years before he released the groundbreaking international bestselling DVD's Stigmata and Indecent, and three years before Houchin helped found Theory11.com - the groundbreaking new online resource for magicians. And if you ask Wayne, this is just the beginning. Young, ambitious and charismatic, Houchin has never stopped pushing himself. At age 16, he made national headlines for escaping from a regulation straightjacket while hanging upside-down 50 feet in the air over a blocked off intersection packed with thousands of people. Gimmicked straightjackets can be purchased from magic distributors all over the world. Houchin wasn't interested. He trained for months in preparation for the escape and it paid off, cementing him in the mind of his fellow Chico, CA residents for a decade to come. A few years and a handful of critically acclaimed theatre shows later, he found himself on the front page again, this time for accurately predicting the exact outcome of the Patriots upset over the Rams in Super Bowl XXXVI. Next it was being blindfolded with duct tape and driving safely down Highway 99 at 65mph for Synthesis Magazine. And in between all the publicity, Houchin spent his time developing his own effects and perfecting them in front of audiences across the country. In 2003, an underground tape of Wayne's original magic found its way into the hands of Banachek, one of the world's foremost mentalists, who immediately recognized its potential. It wasn't long before the two became friends. So, when Banachek was hired as a consultant for the A&E series "Criss Angel: Mindfreak" and was asked if he knew of any underground creative minds, one name stood out. Houchin came on board, agreed to allow a few of his original pieces of magic to be performed on the show and subsequently shot a DVD of his impromptu signed quarter through soda can, Sinful, with Angel. The DVD was an instant hit and was hailed largely as one of the best effects to be released that year. In 2007 Houchin joined forces with Jonathan Bayme, Chris Kenner, B.J. Bueno, and Dana Hocking to form www.theory11.com - a new online entity devoted to the advancement of the art of magic. Along with Dana Hocking, Houchin has helped to revolutionize the art of teaching magic on video. Everything from filming in High Definition to music production to the cutting-edge, MTV-style editing that is fast becoming their trademark. Houchin's vision for the company is expansive and each success only serves to increase his drive. Believe it. For Wayne Houchin, this really is just the beginning. -------------------------------------------- 19. e-zine Archives -------------------------------------------- Back issues of the Magic New Zealand e-zine go to: www.watson.co.nz/fezine.html When you enter the archive the e-zines are in issue order and are Coded, e.g. 001 Nov06 1999.txt first three numbers (001) denote issue number, then the date (Nov06) and the last figures the year (1999) -------------------------------------------- 20.
