More Remarkable Magic - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message by Nick Lewin (US) Going Digital I wanted to take a few lines to talk about the various developments that the exciting new world of handheld digital devices has added to the working magician. They are some wonderful addition to our arsenal. A couple of weeks ago Alan mentioned Bruce Kalver's App "Magic Gig Slips" and I couldn't wait to check it out. I was very happy that I did, and I consider it a really great App that makes getting the details of booking a show a real snip. What makes the App so useful is that it is so easy to create variable fields that can be added to the basic information that it allows you to swap with your client. I always have certain questions that I like to resolve in writing before finalizing a gig. For me the key questions (other than the really obvious) are: 1 How many people are attending the event? I have made the mistake many times in the past of neglecting to get the answer to this question and amongst other things it radically affects how much one should charge for the gig. 2 What is the nature of the event? This is a very key piece of information that affects what you wear and what magic effects you chose to perform. 3 Are there any special goals or requests that you wish me to address in my performance? For instance is there anybody in particular you want me to include in the show. 4 How close is the audience to the stage/performing area? There is nothing worse than a huge and unnecessary space between the performer and the audience. In comedians lingo we call it a 'Comedy Moat.' If you can nip that problem in the bud then you should. 5 What is the phone number of the person who is in charge of the tech requirements of the show? It is astounding how often your buyer fails to fully think through the needs of the performer, usually they just have no idea what is needed to make the sound and lighting suitable. 6 Payment. Yes, it is really nice to fully organize the exact details of how and when you get paid! I always require a 50% deposit and the remainder payable prior to show time. Why not make sure it is fully put down in writing and avoid any details getting lost in the shuffle. We don't want to get caught in a billing cycle that is like a twist on the old joke about nothing getting a dentist's bill paid quicker than a new toothache. Nothing can slow down payment more than the show having been completed and visible only in the rear view mirror. The nice part of this App is that it allows you to sort out your own list of key factors and then emailing them even as you are speaking to the client. This App can really help. I would also like to give a little shout out to the amazing job that Stan Allen has done with his iPad version of 'Magic magazine.' It is a peach. You can buy the issues individually and enjoy them wherever you are. The physical layout and manner of presentation are superb and a model for anyone else attempting to follow suit. Close on the heels of Stan in this area was Richard Kaufman's digital version of the venerable 'Genie' magazine. As far as I am aware the digital version is available only as an added bonus to a subscription to printed magazine. It does however allow one access to all past issues. Very cool, Richard! These are lovely additions to the life of a traveling pro. Why not throw in access to all your great books too . just a fast and greedy plug there! If I may add one little personal note here (and hell, why not!) I am getting really tired of reading negative magazine reviews of DVDs that feature just one trick. What exactly is the problem with this? A DVD is not a book, and if you can learn one good trick for $35 bucks then be happy about it. So please let's not be so 'snitty' about the cash to material quota. Look how much you spend at the local magic store on crap you never use! Finally a little 'heads up' to what I consider the best of the new iPhone tricks; 'iPredict.' It is a really great little effect that has been thoroughly worked out to eliminate most of the problems usually associated with iTricks. It has many strong elements and is a real winner. As always feel free to email me at nicklewin1@me.com (No, I am not plugging or promoting anything in Magic New Zealand that I personally profit from. Kinda' nice isn't it!) -------------------------------------------- 6. Disruptive Behavior - #206 - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com Disruptive Behavior - #206 - Kyle Peron magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com I do think there are 2 sides of the "disruptive behavior" scenario. 1) disruptive children in the audience causing issues or problems during the show. 2) children or adults or situations outside of the performance area itself that cause issues or distracts from the enjoyment of the folks watching the show. Each of these we all have experienced but both are vastly different in my mind in how I personally would handle them. The question is not so much how you handle disruptive behavior, but more on if you should have it on your materials or website to try and prevent problems before the event takes place. I commend anyone for being proactive and trying to solve problems before they become bigger ones. If you are a professional, your job is to be a solutions provider to the client and do what you can to both meet and exceed expectations. Controlling disruptive situations can help you to have a better experience. Now a disruptive audience has never really been so much of a problem for me. In my mind it comes with the territory. If I am a professional, I should be able to handle a situation like this and be able to turn it into around in my favor. When an audience is watching me, they are in my world and they are a part of my show. My show is not just my props and myself. My show also consists of the audience watching me and it is up to me to be able to control any situation that comes up. I get the kids and the audience excited. I want them to engage with me and interact in all different ways. So one of the only things I may state on the phone on in a letter to the client is simply something like this. "The Magical Illusions of Kyle and Kelly Magic Show is a fun show that engages children and adults in a very interactive style. We encourage our audiences to take part in the show from their seats as well as become part of the show by being invited on stage. Fun, laughter and lots of applause are always more than encouraged." Now in this fashion it is worded as a feature and a benefit in other words the feature is an interactive an engaging show. The benefit is that the audience gets to have more fun and a more entertaining experience. It is also worded in such a way that it does not come across as a negative to the prospect. Instead they see it as a powerful benefit that sells to them. It also allows the prospect to realize that if the kids jump up or shout, that it is OK and a part of the style my show tries to invite. The second situation is one in which there our outside distractions that prohibit the audience from engaging and enjoying in the show experience. These are the distractions that bother me the most and most of this can be solved by being open and up front with the client. A lot of times clients are simply not used to working with entertainers and so I take on a role of trying to educate the client by being a help to them to solve their needs. For example, I will always engage a prospect by saying: "Hi Mary. May I ask you first if you can tell me a bit more about your event and what your goals are for it? What would you like your guests to come away with after the event is over?" By doing this I am engaging them right from the start and do not have to write anything into any contract unless we agree upon something that the CLIENT brought up themselves. Most entertainers sell, sell, sell. I like to get them talking and find out through listening, what their needs are. In this way it allows me to talk about things that can be of benefit to them. In this fashion I do not come off as demanding. For example I might hear them state, "Oh we want the children to have a great time so the adults can meet and greet and get to know each other more." Now that I know this information I can offer a solution for them that also helps me out in the long run. I can state: "That sounds wonderful. My show is a family show and we encourage kids to sit with their mom or dad and moms and dads to sit with their kids. This way the show can be experienced as a family. Since many of the adults have not seen each other in a long time, I can understand people wanting to catch up on old times. To make this work best for both the show and for you, I would recommend having the show in a different area from where the meet and greet will be taking place. This way the audience can hear me and interact better during my show." Now once again, I engaged her first to have her tell me her needs and wishes before just throwing out demands towards her. My response is worded in a way that she sees as a benefit to her event and how I am making it a better situation for her. Once agreed upon, then this can be worded and mentioned in the contract agreement that goes out to her. I do not place it in there unless it was discussed ahead of time. As you can see, my approach is one of engaging the prospect/client up front by getting them to talk to me. When they do, I listen to what they are saying and I latch on to those areas I know I can directly help with. This approach gets them to see me as a true professional who is willing to help them make their event the best it can be by offering solutions to them that really work. My perceived value climbs much higher before I ever show up at the event. Once a subject is discussed, it gets written down and then I can include that in a contract or via an email conformation letter. When they see it, they are not alarmed at it because they know we have discussed it before in advance. It is no longer a demand but an agreement we have to ensure their event goes over the best it can. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you. Tony Brook In Conversation With Valerie - Part 2 -------------------------------------------- Message by Anthony Darkstone Brook - Europe/USA TB : Yes indeed, you are a very feminine lady as anyone who has seen you both on and off stage can testify and I shall consider it my duty to inform you know who that more bouquets of roses are in order. Speaking of roses and bouquets. I know that you and Gilles have been together for many years and my family and I, together with our other mutual friends, know how devoted you are to each other and that you both have a wonderful relationship. A very Magical relationship in every sense of the word. As I said, you two have been together for a long while but you only decided to formalize your relationship a few years back. I know that day in April 2004 was very special to both of you. It was a great day. Share some of that day with us. V : Yes it was very special and not just because it was our wedding day. It was special because of all the wonderful people that were there that day. Also the location. It was very special . the "Musée de la Magie" of Georges Proust located in the oldest part of Paris. It's kind of a tiny place for a party but we managed to have a seated dinner for some 66 guests made up of family and friends. Gilles's very best friend Christian Fechner and Tommy Wonder were there. It's so wonderful to recall them coming especially for us knowing they were already fighting against their terrible illnesses. Gaetan Bloom, Jean Merlin, Bernard Bilis, Veronique Ross, Henri Mayol, Pierre Mayer and many other dear magician friends. What a cast! But for once, we didn't want any "magic" at the tables. We didn't want to hear "what about showing us a trick ?". The great thing of that evening was the "Casino time" with a real big Roulette table and two Blackjack tables where everyone has had a great time. Yes Tony; as you said , a very special and memorable day. TB : Speaking of special days, as I mentioned in my introduction, you have won many prestigious awards. V : Yes Tony, I am very pleased and honored to say that I have. When I started, I wanted to gain a reputation as a magician, I wanted that to happen quickly and so I thought it would be best to compete in contests. For more than 10 years, I participated to most of contests in Europe, and of course mostly in Switzerland and France. Some of them are : 1996 and 1998, 1st prize French Contest. 1999, Silver Wand in Monte Carlo and 1st prize Swiss Anneaux Magiques. TB : Of course, they are all great awards and very special to you but I remember you telling me that receiving the Sarmoti in Vegas was very thrilling. Please share some of that moment with us. V : Well, Tony as you know it is a very rare honor and privilege to be even considered for the Sarmoti, let alone be awarded it. all my awards, as you have rightly said, are special but the Sarmoti has a significance because it is from Las Vegas. I know that you and I have many friends there and it is a very special place with its own Magical feeling. To be presented with such an award in such a place and by two Las Vegas legends is just, quite frankly, extremely overwhelming. Broken Wand - Prof. Looy Simonoff -------------------------------------------- Message by Lupe Nielsen (US) This is just a brief e-mail to announce the passing of one of our best friends, Prof. Looy Simonoff, from Las Vegas, Nevada. Looy was a mathematics and logic professor at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas for 35 years. He also gave evening magic courses at the university as well. Magicians who knew him were in awe at his vast knowledge of close-up and card magic. He invented numerous effects used by a number of professionals today. We will miss our friend that would constantly make us laugh with his dry sense of humor. He had an incredible memory with a knack to memorize entire poems and interesting trivia. Norm spoke to him on a daily basis and always got a kick out of asking him about old radio shows from the 30s and 40s. Looy could tell him who the actors were and the roles they played. When Norm wasn't around, Looy was my date in so many magic conventions and events in town. He was truly a special human being. His family and friends will be having a Memorial in his honor. Here are the details... Event: Looy Simonoff's "Celebration of Life" Memorial Date: Saturday, April 23, 2011 Time: 5:00 pm Place: UNLV Richard Tam Alumni Center Name of meeting room: Marietta Tiberti Grand Hall Address: NW corner of Maryland Parkway and Harmon Avenue (Maude Frazer Way) Las Vegas is a very easy city to navigate. The UNLV Campus is located between Tropicana Avenue and Flamingo Road. Harmon Avenue is smack in between Tropicana and Flamingo. Maryland Parkway is perpendicular to all three. When driving on Maryland, go to the corner of it with Harmon, and you will see the UNLV Alumni Center on the northwest corner. There is a parking lot in front of it with parking meters. I don't think you will have to "feed the meters" at that time, but be prepared. If you are a performer, you are certainly encouraged to perform your favorite Looy trick. This will be a celebration of his life and we look forward to seeing you there. For planning, it might help to get a basic head count. If you are coming, please send me an RSVP to: mail@nnmagic.com For condolences, you can contact Looy's brother, Jerry. His email is: jerry@chax.com As you know, we do not send too many "mass e-mails". Thank you for indulging us by reading this message. :-) And yes, one of my little projects this week will be to update our website. Norm and I have been quite busy in the workshop lately making another batch of Okito-Nielsen Chinese Sticks, restocking our shelves and figuring out what the next project will be. Take care, stay healthy, and have a HAPPY EASTER! -------------------------------------------- 11. For more than 40 years, Ted performed, collected and bought magic and was incredibly passionate about it, and had to money to buy good quality products. He was very well known throughout Tasmania as a performer and frequently held public performances and 'magic nights' which he often hosted in his own home. Ted's entire collection has been acquired with the help of Michael Patterson by Taylor's and will be sold by auction at our premises in Sydney on Sunday 15th May. Whilst I have acquired magic collections in the past, this is by far the biggest and most diverse collection of magic I have ever seen. It is a well-known fact that deceased estates tend to yield the kind of quality magic that people are generally reluctant to part with. This collection has more than 500 items from such quality dealers as Supreme, Abbots, Tannens, Magic Hands, Ken Brooke and Davenports. I can promise you that no matter what kind of magic you are interested in, there will be something for you in this collection. From Tenyo tricks to Abbots stage props and from the smallest Himber ring to the full size Zig Zag illusion, there is something for everyone. We will publish a full list on 1st May which you can download from our website and viewing will be available from 8th May at our premises. Bids will be accepted prior to the auction date by email and payment can be made by cash, cheque or credit card (3% charge on cards). Kodell Biography Available -------------------------------------------- Message by Jeff Pierce (UK) Available only from www.jeffpiercemagic.com and www.jackkodell.com "Kodell Do Something Different" the biography of magician Jack Kodell For a lifetime, Kodell traveled the world with his unique creativity, and a flight of birds. Headlining long running shows around the world in five-star venues from the Moulin Rouge and the Lido in Paris, the London Hippodrome, The Savoy Hotel, and the London Palladium in the United Kingdom, and the Ed Sullivan Show, New York's Copacabana, and The Latin Quarter in the United States. He also accomplished a number of firsts in his career including being the first magician to perform in Las Vegas. Kodell always strived to be different with his magic and his life, from flying an airplane at the age of nine to doubling at the Moulin Rouge and the Lido for one year in his early thirties. To quote the legendary magician Channing Pollock, "Thanks Kodell for paving the way for me and other magicians to follow." When he retired from show business at the young age of thirty-three he had five years of contracts sitting on his manager's desk. So why would someone walk away from show business at such a young age? Kodell had the best of both worlds, a privileged life, and his wildest dreams coming true. All thanks to Doing Something Different in the world of magic. Information on editions: There will be three editions. 1. The regular edition will be a hardback with dustjacket. Sells for $59.95 2.
