Editor's Message -------------------------------------------- Due to major house renovations the Magic New Zealand Server has been out of action over the past week. Unfortunately over this period I was unable to put out a Newsflash notifying our magic subscribers of the tragic death of Terry Seabrooke.   Pleased to say that Magic New Zealand is all up and running again!   Remember if you have any magic news drop me a line: AW@Alan-Watson.com   -------------------------------------------- 2. Broken Wand - Master Entertainer, Terry Seabrooke -------------------------------------------- Message by Mel Kientz (US)   Born (26th December 1932) and raised in Watford, in England, Terry Seabrooke hasn't always been a world-class comedy magician! Graduating from Watford Grammar School for Boys, he excelled at track, captaining the Watford Harriers and became the County Champion in the quarter and half mile events. Having always been interested in magic and entertainment, the first magic book he owned was The Conjurer's Vade Mecum by J.F. Orrin.   Following his National Service, he began a career in banking and insurance. Whilst conducting an insurance inspection, he found the claimant to be Billy McComb, who was a major influence on his decision in his mid-thirties to permanently change careers. "There was more satisfaction performing on the nightclub and cabaret circuit", Terry says, then jokingly adds, "besides, they (his banking employers) didn't like me taking the samples home!"   Seabrooke has appeared three times at Buckingham Palace for H.R.H. Elizabeth II, twice performed at London's famous Palladium, toured Great Britain as support act with Linda Carter (Wonder Woman), brought his comedy to the first show in the Falklands after the war, and has made over 145 tours to the United States. He has worked all over Europe, Africa, the Orient, Australia and New Zealand.  In fact, it would be safe to say he's been around the world several times!   Seabrooke has shared the spotlight with Sir Elton John, Sir Cliff Richard, Sir Harry Secombe, Sir Norman Wisdom, Jim Davidson, Dame Vera Lyn, Barry Cryer, Burt Weedon, Roy Castle, Jethro, Roy Hudd, Cilla Black, Bruce Forsyth, Ken Dodd, Des O'Connor - to name but a few! He also had the pleasure to work a six week cruise with Victor Borge.   Terry has appeared on television for two series of For My Next Trick on BBC, and made guest appearances on The Ken Dodd Show, The Good Old Days, This Is Your Life, Comedy Magic Strip and Grumbleweeds among many others, totaling over 100 appearances in England and abroad.   He has written two popular books, Seabrooke's Book, and Beyond Compere the first and definitive book outlining the art of hosting the show and compering. His magical inventions, The Fire Wallet, Burnt Banknote, and Cigarette Through Coat are known and sold worldwide.   Terry was a Life Member of the Academy of Magical Arts, The Magic Castle; Member of the Inner Magic Circle with Gold Star; International Brotherhood of Magicians; Society of American Magicians; Grand Order Of Water Rats, and a long-standing member and President of the Watford Association of Magicians.   In 2004, Terry Seabrooke was awarded the Masters Fellowship, the highest honour in magic from the Academy of Magical Arts, The Magic Castle. He also has a Performing Fellowship from the AMA and has been twice nominated as Lecturer of the Year at the Magic Castle. He is one of only four Brits to be elected to the Society of American Magicians Hall of Fame and is their International Ambassador of magic.   He holds the Leslie Guest Award of Excellence for writing over 20 years for the pages of M.U.M. magazine. Closer to home, he has the Carlton Comedy Award from The Magic Circle, London, and the Murray Award from the Blackpool Magicians' Club.   Terry has positively affected the lives of most working magicians and magic enthusiasts around the world.   Story Source: http://www.terryseabrooke.co.uk/about.html   -------------------------------------------- 3. $5,000 Reward For The Stolen Chuck Jones Illusions -------------------------------------------- Message by Gene McCarthy (US)   Gene McCarthy of International Entertainment has placed a reward for information leading to the recovery in the recent theft of Chuck Jones touring illusions.   Chuck can be contacted by phoning: 805 583 0493   -------------------------------------------- 4. Remarkable Magic #15 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message by Nick Lewin (US)   A Magical Tribute that honors to the Ultimate Magicians in the Ultimate way.   I was honored and excited today when I received an early copy of the new book 'Siegfried & Roy: Unique In All The World.' To say that I'm impressed by this work of art is a gigantic understatement, I may have to look for new phrases and invent new words to pay full regard to their achievement.   My regular readers will know the slightly obsessive affection I have for the physical packing involved when presenting a product to the public. From Norm Nielsen's rubber dove to Apple's latest laptop, I just love the feeling you get when you see packaging that is practical, functional and combines them into an esthetic statement.   With performers as 'over the top' as Siegfried & Roy you would expect the packaging of the project to be just as 'over the top.' It is.  By the time you get to the final box that houses the book, DVDs and artifacts, you instinctively know that you have something very special in your hands.  You do.   Opening the package (which weighs as much as a large dog or a small tiger) a pair of white gloves is revealed which gives you an idea of the precious contents. This isn't a book you want to leave fingerprints on! The very act of donning those gloves to finally remove the oyster from its shell is enough to cause the most hardened heart to beat a little faster.   The actual book is housed in a magnificent box that also contains three exclusive DVDs and a secret compartment. In movie reviews they often warn you that a 'spoiler' is coming up that might interfere with your enjoyment of the plot. That has never once stopped me from reading the rest of the review. I am going to act accordingly.   I'm not going to give any hints, or 'spoilers' about what 'secrets' this compartment contains. However, let's just say they are unique, original and priceless to any true magician or collector. The attention to detail is immaculate and the selection of 'goodies' will delight any purchaser and bring shivers in the spine to collectors.   The actual book is about the size and weight of a medieval Bible and I will warn you in advance to open the book on a table or your arms will develop Popeye muscles by the time you finish reading the book. I should also inform you that once you start reading the book you won't want to stop - trust me!   The story of these two remarkable men will grab you instantly; it is a classic story of following a vision and creating reality from a dream. You will be amazed by how much of that journey you knew about, how much you kind of  knew and how little you really know about these icons.   I seldom write in Magic New Zealand about magical products unless I feel passionately about them. It's not my style. However, I happily, proudly and without reservation recommend this landmark magical production. Given its limited edition of only 500 copies each one signed and numbered, 'Siegfried & Roy: Unique In All The World' may well become the ultimate collectable in the magic world.   This is not an inexpensive book to purchase, because this was not a cheap book to publish but the sheer extravagance and 'over the top' way it has been presented will probably never be repeated. You won't ever be seeing a paperback or downloadable version of the book - it would be impossible.   If you truly consider yourself a serious student of magic, a collector or just a financial investor, I suggest that you go immediately to the publishers website http://www.noesispublishing.com/SRbook.php and see if there are copies still available. Then Buy One!   I feel absolutely certain you will never regret it. Think of the joy of being one of the lucky 500 people are going to feel the excitement of opening the box, putting on your gloves and turning the pages to share them with their magical cohorts. You will have to warn them not to salivate on the pages. Maybe they should have included bibs as well as gloves!   Congratulations to Diana Zimmerman, Paul Stone and Robert Gould and everyone else associated with the project.   You have succeeded in creating a book that is "Unique In All The World.' Give me a digital "Hi," at http://www.nicklewin.com   -------------------------------------------- 8. Tony Brook in Conversation with Ariann Black - (Part 3) -------------------------------------------- Message by Anthony Darkstone Brook - Europe/USA   TB: But the story has a happy ending ..doesn't it?   AB:.. it does. In the store at the same time was a magician who observed what had happened at the store; he stopped my mother outside the magic shop. The kindly magician took a rope out of his pocket and showed us how to do the rope trick. After completing the rope trick he gave us his rope to take home. This same magician said that I didn't need the ropes to do the trick, that I could use a hair ribbon, cotton twine, anything that was rope like, he also told my Mom about all the great magic books that were in the local library. To this very day, I remember this sincere gesture but I can't remember his name, only his appearance. He had red hair and a red goatee beard.   It was the best lesson I ever learned in magic. That you don't need the props you get when you buy a trick. So many illusions can be performed with everyday objects if you just take the time to think about what else can replace that rope.     TB: We have that kindly man to thank. I'm glad you shared that story with us. Thank you. It certainly will make many performers stop and think about their approach to Magic share with us please your growth from that moment ..   AB: I began to quench my thirst for magic and visited the library every day. Day after day, I spent hours in the library pouring over every magic book. I looked at every picture, studied every detail and imagined myself performing tricks and illusions with the greatest of skill in front of large audiences. Although I did wonder why they never referred to the person in magic books as SHE, commonly in magic books a person is always referred to as HE.   When I was 12, I began performing at children's birthday parties as Alice in Wonderland. Word got around. Each Saturday, the main Edmonton library treated the local children to movies and stories, but when they heard about me, I was invited to perform. These performances were fantastic because this was the first time I ever performed on an actual stage. I did that for over a year. I started out with only ten minutes of magic from my birthday act and later began to introduce new tricks into my performance. I guess, you might say,  that I intuitively knew, even at that early age the importance of variety in my show. It also fulfilled my desire to learn everything I could about magic.   End of Part 3   (Hidden in this article are deliberate grammatical & spelling mistakes. After much hard work, my proofreader & I have included these to please those who enjoy finding them.)   Send comments & corrections to:- tbrook47@gmail.com   -------------------------------------------- 9. S.A.M. Convention - Pittsburgh Has Laughs! -------------------------------------------- Message from George Schindler (US)   Comedy Acts always add flavor to convention shows and this year's S.A.M convention will be real tasty. We're looking forward to seeing the guy who had us laughing and came away with second prize at the 2008 IBM/SAM convention Dave Kaplan. It is always rare to find a comedy act winning these awards. And we have a few funny men you may not have seen before, such as the act described as "mentally irregular, bonkers, buggy, cracked, kooky, loco, loony, loopy, nutty, wacky. " Two guys called "Haywire" will have you in tears from laughter.   Favorite comedy juggler Howard Mincone makes a return appearance by popular demand, plus the antics of Bill Cornelius and the guy who made it big at Elmo's Rib Shop, John Hromada . You've got to be there to enjoy it all.   Register early at http://www.magicsam.com/SAM2011/index.asp   Hold the dates! January 29th, Potter & Potter Auctions -------------------------------------------- Message by Gabe Fajuri   On Saturday, January 29th, Potter & Potter Auctions will conduct an auction of rare gambling and magic memorabilia and books. The auction will feature an unusual assortment of cheating devices, as well as magic posters and ephemera. Many of the items in this auction come from the collections of Raymond Goulet and Terry Roses.   A variety of Holdouts will be offered. One highlight of the auction will be a scarce Holdout Table (est. $3,000/$5,000) - an apparently innocent card table that secretly delivers a card into the operator's hand, giving him a supreme edge in any card game.   Other curious items in the sale include:   -A Marked Card detector - an optical device used to detect "I.R." ink on the backs of playing cards; -Two "Juice Joints" - electromagnetic devices hidden inside tables which can control the roll of magnetic dice; -A gaffed carnival game known as a Camelback Arrow; -Tap Dice - dice with weights concealed inside which the operator can control.   Chief among the rare books in the auction is a first edition of S.W. Erdnase's Expert at the Card Table from the collection of Richard Hatch, formerly of H&R Magic Books.   Among the rare and collectible magic books in the auction will be 18th and 19th century texts in English, French and Swedish, as well as numerous limited edition and collectible publications from every decade of the 20th century.   This LIVE auction takes place in Potter & Potter's Chicago auction gallery.
