Editor's Message -------------------------------------------- Just heard from Gene McCarthy of International Entertainment that James Dimmare who was scheduled for the New Zealand 'Festival of Magic' tour has received another substantial offer and has asked to be released from this year's tour. Pleased to announce that Chuck Jones & Company will be on the tour this year. Remember if you have any magic news drop me a line: AW@Alan-Watson.com -------------------------------------------- 2. Wyrick Doing My Water Tank Illusion On The Ellen Show -------------------------------------------- Message by Franz Harary forwarded on by Al The Only Hi Al Here's my story with Wyrick doing my water tank illusion on the Ellen show. A few years ago, he told me his plans to do my effect, if we made a deal or not. Being cornered. I agreed to trade the water tank license for his airplane illusion. Steve was a friend at the time and I trusted him. As such, knowing we had a deal, I pre-sold the plane to another production company off of the photos that "my friend" Steve had given me. On delivery, I discovered that the plane was destroyed from sitting out in the desert abandoned for months. Unfortunately, I had already sold it and was forced to try to make it work. $90,000 dollars later in repairs, the plane was still far from operational. This lead to my lawsuit agents on him. Wyrick went bankrupt and walked. I got screwed again, this time with massive legal fees in addition to the money lost on failed repairs and the profits from the would-be sale. Even if the deal had gone down as planned, Wyrick would NEVER have had the TV rights for this illusion. I was sure to hold back rights for ALL Electronic media! Unfortunately, "my friend" never got around to signing the contract while the tank was getting built. The reality here is there is not much I can do to stop him. But at least I can save others from making my mistake. Magically,.. your friend. .. Franz -------------------------------------------- 3. Update On Terry Seabrooke -------------------------------------------- Message by John Wade (UK) John Wade writes to say that Terry's wife Hilda and the family have been overwhelmed by the kindness and thoughtfulness of magicians all over the world since Terry was taken into hospital, and would like to thank everyone. It has been a difficult three months and although she would like to have replied personally to everybody she has simply been too busy. Terry will be leaving the hospital shortly for further care. He can still be called on his mobile but cannot receive emails himself. Julie Carpenter had a good response to her request last week and is still willing to take emails for Terry and to make sure he sees them. She is on crazywoman1969hotmail.com Once Terry has settled into his new treatment we will be able to give more information. -------------------------------------------- 4. The Merlin Awards??? -------------------------------------------- Message by Tim Ellis (Aust) Thanks so much to all of the helpful feedback I received in cataloguing THE MERLIN AWARDS presented over the years. I have now compiled them on a website here http://merlinawards.wordpress.com/ where they are available as a resource for anyone interested in The Merlin Awards. I guess a lot of people are just as curious as I am because, on the day the site went live (last Wednesday) we had over 2,500 hits! There are still a lot of award winners we still haven't been able to identify, so please check out the UNKNOWN section and leave a comment if you can help us out. Thanks again. Tim Ellis PS: A lot of people think this website is saying that ALL Merlin Awards are "bought". That is not correct. Many well-known magicians are legitimately given awards, and this helps the Merlins prestige and credibility. In a lot of other cases, however, winners are asked to pay an "administration" fee to help fly Tony over to their country to present the award. -------------------------------------------- 5.'Teller Talks at the Innovation' -------------------------------------------- Message by Nick Lewin (US) During a breakneck visit home from South America before leaving to go back to South America, I enjoyed a magical treat of a lifetime. I'm sure that no one ever thought that Teller (the silent half of Penn & Teller) is silent due to a lack of words and in his lecture this morning he proved every bit as articulate in speech and meticulous in thought as any magician I have ever heard. The lecture was part of Paul Stone's 'Innovention' in Las Vegas. Although I was only able to attend this one event, it was obvious instantly that Paul had done a superb job of re-inventing the standard magic convention. Stone's many years producing top league corporate shows was very evident and everyone attending the event seemed delighted with this one of a kind gathering of magicians. Bravo, Paul you did a first rate job and with lectures by performers such as Criss Angel and Teller you have raised the bar for all such future events. Teller took the time to share the way he created one particular addition to the 'Penn & Teller: Live in Vegas' show at the Rio Hotel. It was a fascinating tour through the brilliant mind of a creative and slightly obsessive perfectionist. He demonstrated not only the evolution of his re-staging of a classic piece of magic but also how he developed it into pure and classic 'Penn & Teller' material. With the aid of witty and minimalistic AV and one or two live demonstrations, Teller was able to accomplish a feat of forensic psychology that was an inspiration to everyone present. His demonstration gave an insight into the attention to detail that made it obvious why he may be one of the most original minds ever to tackle the business of getting something right. As he related each physical and psychological change he made along his journey with this particular trick, there was a feast of information and knowledge to be gained by those of us lucky enough to be in attendance. The detail of the tweaks and development in the music that accompanied the creative process were fascinating and the fact that it has ultimately ended up being presented silently in the show was one of the insightful elements that I particularly enjoyed. I was reminded of Oscar Wilde who explaining he was just exhausted from working. When asked what he had done that day, he replied; "I worked all morning on a poem and added a comma, then this afternoon I toiled for hours on it again and removed the comma. I am quite, quite exhausted." The incremental development of Teller's new masterpiece showed the exact same attention and re-attention to detail that marks the genius of someone who creates in steps and stages before achieving exactly what he wants to achieve-even if he's not quite sure what it is until he arrives there. It was also fun to get a glimpse of the working dynamic between Penn and Teller that has created such a successful and slightly unlikely partnership. I learned a lot about both of them and even more about the creation of great magic. There are currently more lectures filled with more tricks than the magic world could ever need, it was great to be given a view of the big picture and the amount of tiny brush strokes needed to create it. Thank you Teller (and Paul Stone) for allowing us this unexpected and in many ways unprecedented delight. The multiple standing ovations at the conclusion of the lecture were ample evidence that my enthusiasm was shared by all the attendees. If you ever have a chance to spend an hour touring the mind and methods of this modern magical master-do NOT miss the opportunity. -------------------------------------------- 6. Remarkable Magic # 3 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message by Nick Lewin (US) 'How many cards can you find in the deck?' I can't resist weighing in on the IMS award confusion. Of course there are discrepancies in the amount of Magicians of the decade etc. These aren't real awards: not real, honest to God awards. Sorry to have to break the news but there is also no tooth fairy. Don't ask me which year Steve Wyrick won the 'magician of the year?' Tell me any year in which he should even have been nominated for it! The IMS isn't in a legitimate position to give these awards. End of story. In my last column I detailed how the fictitious character of James Bond influenced my decision to be a comedy magician. It was written only partially with tongue in cheek. There was an awful lot of personal truth in what I wrote and when I attended the 'Magic Live' convention this month I was delighted to find that it had struck a chord with quite a few other magicians. I was encouraged by this response to complete the subject and would like to continue by explaining about who it is that has kept me focused on my work, and shown me how to keep it relevant. It is another quasi-fictitious personality with a longer than expected shelf life as an icon. This person is poet, singer and musician Bob Dylan. However, it is Dylan the performer who I want to discuss in this article. Bob Dylan has worked consistently and grown creatively for well over forty years and has done so in that most difficult of places, in the public eye. The fact that some of the very strongest of his work has blossomed after the age of sixty is not only unusual but highly inspirational. I have been a fan and student of Bobby the Z. since the sixties and enjoyed every step and 'misstep' during his career. When I first decided to become a magician it was always my intention to be a 'journeyman' and to perform full-time magic for the rest of my life. So far it has worked out pretty darn well, in spite of the occasional 'misstep,' which is another way of saying I am just like any other performer who wishes to be an artist and remain creative. It is very easy to project youthful enthusiasm when you start out as a performing magician because you are youthful and enthusiastic and there comes a time when audiences no longer respond as they once did. Dylan has described the toughest time in his performing life as being when he had to learn to 'Do consciously what he used to do unconsciously.' This is the moment when self-consciousness' enters into the picture and can throw a serious spanner in the works for a performer. The biggest problem with the arrival of self-consciousness is that it frequently proves to be the delivery system for the ultimate 'death-watch beetle' to the performer. This often manifests as a form of self-bitterness that is probably best categorized under the umbrella term 'familiarity breeds contempt.' Sadly, this contempt is projected to the audience who not unnaturally feel less than thrilled by it. When you know where and when an audience is supposed to respond it becomes all too easy to project a degree of subtle belittlement upon them when they do so. Multiply this effect by twenty when comedy enters into the equation. Most comedy magicians begin by not even being aware that their 'patter' is stock. It came out of a book (or someone else's act) so it must be funny-right? Wrong. When the performer begins to realize that his show is filled with 'hack' material, but he does it anyway ("Hey, it gets a laugh doesn't it?) that is when he or she has hit Dylan's 'needing to do consciously what he used to do unconsciously' moment. The high faulting performer may feel he is achieving a post modern or de-constructional approach to his craft. Yeah, right. The answer to this problem is learning to be, what is known as 'in the moment.' Regular folk would probably refer to this as spontaneity or more accurately, appearing to be spontaneous. This Zen like state allows you the freedom to actually be spontaneous and react to your audience by performing to them, rather than at them. If you don't find a way to correct this problem it is easy to be trapped inside your material. Dylan found a way to escape this problem, and deal with it in a very simple manner--- he just kept right on performing. This period of career began with what is generally referred to as the 'Never Ending Tour' and it continues to this day. Imagine the shock of realizing that you had created one of the greatest bodies of work in the last century and you were now drowning in it. Weird. Dylan responded to the realization by singing his country, blues, folk, gospel and rock music in the manner a jazz musician would approach the situation. He made the decision to continue performing on a non-stop basis but to never sing any song the same way he had sung it before. Sometimes the variations on his classic songs work and sometimes they don't, but what is important to Dylan is the feeling of walking on a tightrope night after night without a safety net. There is a very good reason that the entire business of 'bootlegged' recordings began with Dylan. You can listen to recordings of him on a concert tour and one night a song will be slow and stately, the next night the same song will be a wild blues stomp. This is one of the reasons that all these years since he began his career, Dylan has never become a one-man 'Rock & Roll Oldies Tour.' Every show is an event and often the loudest roars of approval are from the way he twists a phrase or alters a lyric's meaning just by an inflection of his voice. It is simple, difficult and effective all at the same time. It has become meaningless to debate whether Dylan is a 'good' singer or not, he has moved far beyond to a unique area of communication that has nothing to do with whether his voice is pretty or whether he hits the right notes. It just isn't relevant. This is the main reason that Dylan's stadium-sized audiences contain not just folk from my generation but people younger than some of his own grandchildren. Just as the glamour and excitement of James Bond made me want to be a magician, it has been my 'ridiculous' obsession with Dylan that has afforded me the key to remaining a relevant one. If you can juggle the elements of a classic song like 'Blowin' In The Wind' you can do the same with the Gypsy Thread. You can learn to really own it. You too can make, break and re-arrange your Greatest Hits on a nightly basis-even if they are the Linking Rings or Baffling Bra. You owe it too yourself and your audience not to do less-repetition is how you learn a trick, not the way it should be presented. "Show" and "Business" - #183 - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com "Show Business". Now there is a term every magician has heard numerous times. Whether you have heard it or read it, one cannot escape the concept. The problem is that many simply do not understand what it really means. To many, the term simply is a definition meaning "those involved in providing entertainment." This is very true, but there it more to it than just that. If you study the term you will realize the power comes from the two words themselves. Each word has a very important meaning and each should be studied intently by any magician practicing our art. If you want to have any real success in the magical arts you must realize that you first must have a "show" that is of value to someone. You must provide a service of a high caliber that meets and exceeds expectations. You must be willing to have a show that solves problems for the folks that hire you. If the show is lacking, then one will not get very far for very long. Sure you may have short term success, but if the product (show) is not of a high caliber then it is sure to falter. Likewise there is power in the term "business". If you get paid a single cent for the magic that you do, then you are in the business of magic. It is as simple as that. You must realize that your magic is a service and a product. Your consumers buy products for a certain reason and you must be willing to invest time in marketing your services the best that you can. It is the combination of show and business that brings about true long-term success. But how can you take these two words and apply them every day? Is there something we as magicians can do to utilize these terms in a much greater fashion? As far as the "show" is concerned, I always believe a magician should be ready to perform at any time in any situation. Even when you are out and about, you should have the ability to perform magic for someone. Now this does not mean that you force magic on a person. It simply means that given the right opportunity, you have the ability to "show" magic to someone. In essence you are always ready. For me personally, I never ever leave the house without rubber bands on my wrist and a pack of cards on me. It is just a force of habit that I either have one or the other if not both. This always gives me the ability to "show" magic if the opportunity presents itself. As far as the "business" side is concerned, I also believe a magician should always take an active role in marketing their shows and what they provide. One must always learn to see opportunities and to get in the habit of treating the magic as the business it really is. For this very reason there is one other thing I never leave home without. I always, always have business cards on me. I carry a professional card case and my business cards (also of quality) are placed in there. I make sure it never runs down and it is always in easy reach on my person. When a situation presents itself, I am always ready to hand out a card and (more importantly) ask for a card in return. Now how does this all work together? Well let me explain through a situation I found myself in just a few days ago. I was done a show and stopped at a local eatery for a little dinner. I still had on my performance clothes as I was only a short distance from home. When you walk into a food establishment dressed a tad bit different, people can not help to stare, look and want to know why you are dressed like that. The waiter came over and politely asked if my wife and I were coming back from a concert, I just calmly replied that we were magicians coming back from a show. Now I could tell he was fascinated, but I never force magic on anyone. That is simply not my style. It was at that point when the waiter asked if it was OK if I could show him something. Always being ready at all times, I did a few rubber band routines for him and the table near us. Everyone had a great time and he was very pleased that I took the time out of my day to show him something. After the little performance, he and a few others asked if I did shows and if I had a card. I simply reached into my card holder and gave a few out and thanked them. I wished them all well and went back to finishing dinner. Now through all of this, I now made a few new friends, got folks excited about magic and marketed my services to a few new prospects. All of this was never forced, it was simply being ready to handle the "show" and "business' sides of magic at any time. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. Tony Brook In Conversation With Jay Scott Berry - Part 3 ------------------------------------------ Message by Anthony Darkstone Brook - Europe/USA TB: Australia... that's where you live. You have invited me to come visit you there in your own Castle of Magic on a 100 acre property. Thank you Jay. It is on my To Do list. We just need to dovetail our schedules and travel. Speaking of Castles and Palaces, we have to reminisce on that incredible weekend of shows that you Produced at Falkland Palace from 2001 through 2007. That was a remarkable event filled with many one-of-a-kind memories as dear Ali Bongo and Pat Page are no longer with us. That was great fun when Ali and I locked Pat in a dungeon cell. We have the photos to prove it and an extensive article was published with that photo in The Magic Circular. Anyone going to www.magicsam.com and clicking on Events and then International News will see more great photos of that event. We had some 6000 people at that weekend event. Share some of the background on how you put that together . JSB: Yes that was fun. Great having you and your son headline there alongside Pavel, from Switzerland, Flip, from Holland, David Goldrake from Luxembourg, Columbine from Australia, Kramus Nexifisus the 2000 year old wizard from Scotland, Helmut & Doris Kautz from Germany along with many others. Of course, as you already mentioned, the two Grand Masters themselves, Pat Page & Ali Bongo, were there every year! It all came about as a result of my good friend, Mark Fisken, from Edinburgh. He contacted me in April 2001 and invited me to headline the very first "Palace of Magic" Festival, held in and around the historic Falkland Palace. It all sounded very intriguing, and certainly an opportunity not to be missed. When Lisa and I arrived in Falkland, we were utterly entranced by the beauty of this quaint medieval village. It was as if we had stepped back in time. The whole event went off very well and, it just so happened, there was a 250 year old, listed house up for sale, just near the Palace. To make a long story short, a few months later, we owned it. By the next year, Mark and I had teamed up to co-produce the Festival, which quickly became one of the world's largest celebrations of magic and wonder. TB: This is a testimony to your organization skills as an Event Producer. I hear you may be planning something similar in Australia in the near future and combining it with another great passion of yours - Music. I well remember after the shows in Scotland, sitting in your living room; my son picked up one of your guitars and started playing some chords..and you, began entertaining us with your singing and guitar playing. Tell us a bit about Jay the Musician. JSB: The event in Australia is in the early planning stages right now. At the moment, however, I am staying very busy performing magic as well as music. This all goes way back. When I was 8, I began playing cello in a string orchestra and at 9 was singing in the Sierra Boys Choir. I got my first guitar when I was 12 and, at the same time, I was playing drums at school. In fact, when I first moved to Hollywood, I landed a lead role in a musical that was bound for Vegas and Broadway. As destiny would have it, however, the backers pulled out at the last minute, which allowed me to pursue magic instead. However, music has always remained an integral aspect of my life and career. In 1985, I began composing soundtracks for my stage productions. This led to 3 instrumental albums and a commission to come to Vienna and compose a score for an original ballet in 1995, performing with The Vienna Symphony Orchestra. During that time, I was actively travelling, all around the world. In 2001, while on tour in Australia, I met Lisa Richards, who is a magician and very talented costume designer. For 5 years, we lived in Falkland. When we were looking to purchase a larger acreage to raise our children on, we searched to world and decided upon a beautiful place just north of Sydney called Wherrol Flat. Once there, I decided to actively create and compose music again Just a year (and lots of hard work) later, I released a new album which has now been heard on over 800 radio stations around the globe. Clown Gets The Vote In Brazil -------------------------------------------- Message by Mick Peck (NZ) Source: Reuters Voters the world over complain about having clowns for politicians, but Brazilians embraced the idea on Sunday by sending a real one to Congress with more votes than any other candidate. Francisco Everardo Oliveira Silva, better known by his clown name Tiririca, received more than 1.3 million votes in Sao Paulo state in Brazil's presidential and congressional elections. That was more than double the votes of the second-placed candidate in Brazil's most populous state. Tiririca caught the attention of disillusioned voters by asking for their support with the humorous slogan: "It can't get any worse" and a promise to do nothing more in Congress than report back to them on how politicians spend their time. "What does a congressman do? The truth is I don't know, but vote for me and I'll tell you," the 45-year-old said in his campaign advertisements. The clown, whose stage name means grumpy, usually appears in public wearing a blond wig, a red hat and a garish outfit. He survived a last-minute attempt by public prosecutors to bar him from running because of evidence that he is illiterate. His candidacy may not have been as spontaneous or innocent as it might appear. Tiririca's well-financed campaign will help elect other politicians because under Brazil's election rules he can pass his substantial excess votes on to other candidates in his coalition, which includes the ruling Workers' Party. -------------------------------------------- 13. Mental Epic Compendium by Paul Romhany - Pages 360 Size 8 x 10" Mental Epic is one the most powerful effects in the mentalist's repertoire. Compiled and edited by Paul Romhany, Mental Epic Compendium, is packed with over fifty-four routines and ideas for this classic effect. Hen Fetsch invented the board in 1954, and over the past five decades it has undergone many different variations, however most magicians and mentalists still own an original Hen Fetsch board. This book covers routines for the standard Mental Epic prop and its modern variations, as well as One-Ahead routines that can be performed close-up and impromptu using post-it notes, business cards and index cards. Contributors include: Banachek, Kenton Knepper, Bob Cassidy, Larry Becker, Dan Garrett, Kostya Kimlat, Sean Taylor, Richard Webster, Bev Bergeron, Alan Shaxon, TC Tahoe, David Regal, Gerard, James Biss, Danny Archer, Bill Abbott, Paul Alberstat, Whit Haydn, Patrick Kuffs, Vanni Pule, E Raymond Carlyle, Tony Binarelli, Mick Ayres, David Seebach, Professor Spellbinder, Bob Tripp, Hal Spear, John T Sheets, Dr. Bill Cushman, Rob Domenech, Ken Dyne, Charles Gauci, Dave Lord, Nathan Grange, Wayne Rogers, David J O'Connor, Ken Ring, Adrian Saw, Jonathan Royle, Christopher Berry, Jheff. Bill Cushman, Chuck Hickok, Peter Arcane and several routines by Paul Romhany The Mental Epic Compendium is the definitive work on this classic of magic and mentalism, and is destined to become a classic in mentalism literature! "You only have to look at the list of contributors to know this book is special. I'm thrilled to find that they all love this effect as much as I do. I don't think a book paying so much attention to a single effect has ever been published before." Richard Webster -------------------------------------------- 16. Important Day For Magicians Across Canada -------------------------------------------- Message by Clive Court October 16 is a very important day for magicians across Canada. Why? because a Canadian magician is being given some official public recognition for his career as an entertainer. And in Canadian culture that is an amazing breakthrough. The blunt fact is that when it comes to arts, entertainment and sport, we are pretty miserly with our national recognition of those who work hard to represent us in certain fields of endeavor. Even the British acknowledged the work of Tommy Cooper with a stamp and a statue. The Americans issued a stamp to give Houdini some official recognition. There are other examples around the world. So when the late Doug Henning is inducted into Canada's Walk of Fame on Friday, October 16. We should all give a collective cheer across the country. As the current emcees say "Make some noise!" That is only part of it. Knowing the poor track record of the Canadian media for acknowledging the success of Canadian athletes in almost any sport but hockey and their preference to ignore not only magicians but almost all visual or non-musical entertainers, I can predict that they will prefer to ignore Doug's achievements and focus most of their coverage on the living inductees which is understandable---and a very good excuse. So it is up to us to tell Doug's story for him. If you have an anecdote or personal story about Doug, please call or email (that's easy enough) your local media outlets. I know that Doug inspired many of you with his success---so you owe him this small favour. It's not too much to ask. Just make sure that the phrase "Doug Henning to be inducted into Canada's Walk of Fame. October 16" is in your headline otherwise it may not get any attention. The date is critically important so they can arrange the interview/schedule the story. Ideally, do it during the first ten days of October. Last year about this time, I donated a copy of Doug's newly-published biography to Canada's Walk of Fame with the dedication "...in memory of one of Canada's great entertainers." Without making any pitch that Doug should be on Canada's Walk of Fame, I simply presented the copy to the CEO for their library. He thanked me and promised to read it. I did point out that both the author (John Harrison) and the publisher were American ...giving recognition to a Canadian entertainer. I also donated copies, with the same dedication, to the editorial libraries of The Canadian Press (the national newswire), the Toronto Star, The Globe and Mail, and CBC-TV and Radio in Toronto (English Network offices). So they have the book and details in their libraries--and no excuse not to produce a story). However, we still need to light a fire under them during the next few weeks. So come on, let's make some kind of collective effort---right across Canada. It is a great opportunity...please do not miss it. Get going! Call your local paper, radio or TV station! Now! Do it for Doug. -------------------------------------------- 17.
