John Daniel Fell And Broke His Back -------------------------------------------- Message by Cathy Daniel (US) Two months ago John fell and broke his back. We have a great back doctor who performed Kyphoplasty surgery and John came home from the hospital the same day. He is up and around but a bit slower than usual. Thank goodness he hasn't lost his sense of humor! His inspiration has always been John Calvert whom John has known since 1942. John says "Calvert is the man!" -------------------------------------------- 5. Paul Daniels Memorabilia And Illusions ------------------------------------------- Message by Paul Daniels (UK) At last I think I have sold the land on which I have three containers full of gimmicks, memorabilia and even a few illusions. That means I have to empty them and that means I have to dispose of the contents. I can't do it all at once but I have to do a 'raid' at least every other week so if you are interested in hearing what is in there (even I don't know) just contact me on pdanielsmagic@yahoo.co.uk. This address has been set up for the sole purpose of dealing with this clearance and when everything has gone I will send you a note terminating this means of contact. -------------------------------------------- 6. More Remarkable Magic - Nick Lewin #47 -------------------------------------------- Message from Nick Lewin (US) Glenn Falkenstein: the man who read minds. This is a column I wrote about my respect and admiration for Glenn Falkenstein on a personal and professional level. It was published in July 2008 and I thought it worth revisiting. It is my personal reminisces of this great performer and human being and was written long before I had any idea that Glenn was ailing, therefore what I say is not from any sense of false sentiment, but was shaped solely from the heart. All my sympathy and condolences go out to Francis, who has obviously been a Godsend to Glenn in these final years. After this column was published I received an email of extreme graciousness and humble pleasure from Francis and Glenn, thanking me for my words. It was one of those moments when I realized why I needed to be a writer Due to some miscalculation on the part of a cruise line I ended up onboard a ship with a mind reader. Not the best of bookings given all the psychic stuff I feature in my show these days but a true joy as far as good company goes. The name of my fellow entertainer was Marc Paul and although I hadn't seen his show before, I suspected (correctly) that he would be outstanding. Sitting drinking Lattes, we discussed mindreading and mind readers for hours. When I asked him what had really inspired him to specialize in this aspect of our art he replied; "Glenn Falkenstein, because he really just looks like he is doing what you would do if you really could read minds." I thought this was a great answer and it took my memory back to the first time I had ever watched Glenn work. I remembered how very impressed I had been at the way he just snapped out answers to questions in truly dynamic manner. I watched Glenn work many times when I arrived in the States and I can honestly say that he really fooled me more than any other act I saw. I was blissfully innocent at the time to the subtleties of a blindfold Q & A act and I gasped right along with the civilians, as during his act he truly seemed to peer into people's minds. He just got right on with it and did what people wanted to see him do. He read peoples minds. Many years later I had the opportunity to work with Ross Johnson and observe his Q & A from the metaphorical wings. Every show I got the same charge watching him go about his business. He would sometimes laughingly refer to himself as a one-trick pony. It is a hell of a trick convincing people you can read minds. By the strangest of coincidences Susan and I were present at Glenn's marriage to Francis Willard in Las Vegas. It isn't that we were close friends, it just sort of happened! However I was delighted to be able to attend as I had become a huge fan of the way Francis and Glenn had reinvented his show with their classic performance of the spirit cabinet. It wasn't easy to change or top Glenn's act but this was a match made in heaven. Peanut butter and jelly good! In the documentary 'Women in Boxes' (I must have really enjoyed the film because I keep quoting it!) It was fascinating listening to Francis talking about her multi-generational life in the magic world. I suspect that many other people, just like me, would have loved to have heard her talk in a little more depth about her life. I hope there are plenty of deleted scenes on the DVD. (There weren't!) I have always been astounded and more than a little outraged at the cavalier manner in which some magicians dismiss mind readers as if there is something not quite fair about their goals and means. I suspect there is more than a little jealousy about the reaction they achieve and the strong hint of the mysterious that they bring to the audience. We are meant to fool them but it is cheating to make them believe us seems to sum up the mind-set of these characters. I have frequently seen magicians reveal 'mind readers' secrets in a casual and vindictive manner. They would never do that with an illusionist or sleight of hand performer. Yesterday while sitting, sipping and chatting with Marc Paul it took me back into an earlier stage of my magic career and the simple pleasure of watching Glenn just get on with it and read minds. He didn't waste a second and he made every minute count. He gave me a real sense of wonder. It is a feeling and a memory that I treasure. So I guess this column goes out to Glenn and Francis one of the classiest couples ever to mess with an audiences mind! Well, that was what I thought back then, I still feel exactly the same way and send my deepest condolences and love to Francis for her great loss. Send any notes or comments to me at nicklewin1@me.com -------------------------------------------- 7. Constructive Critique And Feedback - #171 - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com poofersgrl@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com Constructive Critique and the Art of Feedback Being a part of contests over the years as a competitor and as a judge, I have the upmost respect for just how hard it really is. I have experienced the nerves and the emotions as well as the thrills of victories and the agony of defeats. But through it all I most remember the critiques and feedback I have received. No matter where I competed or on what level, the feedback was the single most important thing to me. Certainly winning is nice, but it is not everything. If you want to grow the art of magic and to exceed your own goals and surpass expectations, then you must be willing to accept feedback and use it. You must absorb it and not fear it. However, what is it about critique that scares people so much? What is it about feedback that makes us put up our defenses? Is there something about it that makes us feel vulnerable? Perhaps accepting feedback makes us feel weak or maybe it is just the simple notion that we are not willing to understand that we are not nearly as good as we think we are. Or perhaps our own ego gets in the way of us seeing and thinking clearly. As a contest judge over the years, I am amazed at how many magicians want their ego stroked whenever they ask for feedback. For whatever reason, they expect everyone to praise them and the ground they walk on. However, the reality is that no matter where you are in your magical journey, you never stop learning and you never stop growing. It is always important to keep an open mind and to really be honest and true to yourself. You owe it to your audience to strive to always do better and learn from every experience. We should not be performing magic simply for ourselves alone. It is our audiences that we perform for and they deserve our best every time out. So when you ask for feedback, do not take offense to what you may hear. It may not always be praise. But any feedback can be powerful no matter if you feel it is negative in nature. Do not take failure as failure. Some of the most successful people in the world will tell you that one of the keys to success is realizing that failure is a stepping stone to greatness. If you learn even one thing from any failure you are stepping forward not backward. Accepting feedback is the same thing. If we accept it as a way in which to learn, then we can continue to move forward. I love it when a contestant comes into a room for their feedback session and they are genuine and happy to be there. Sure they may be nervous, but you can always tell the ones that have a passion for learning and a desire to better their art. You can see it in their eyes and in the way they conduct themselves. They never seem down on themselves and they are always the ones taking notes and asking questions. They understand that they are there to improve upon what they are doing and they realize they can learn from everyone around them if they are just open to receiving the information. So the next time you ask for feedback or receive critique remember to put your ego aside. Remember that the art of magic is about learning and to growing as you go down the road. Like any journey, you never truly stop moving forward. Even when you get there, there is always still plenty more to see. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you. -------------------------------------------- 8. Tony Brook In Conversation With Harry Maurer (Part 5) ------------------------------------------ Message by Anthony Darkstone Brook - Europe/USA TB: How do you make the necessary decisions to put in or take out effects in a show and/or venue? HM: Fortunately, the roots of everything I do from performing in nightclubs and casino to working on cruise ships and even trade show work started from my experiences as a close-up magician. In High School and College, I spent about 6 years performing in restaurants on weekends going from table to table for six hours a day entertaining people. It is there that I learned what makes people laugh, how people react to things, how to interact with people, how to use audience participation properly and effectively, how to select material and structure a performance -- and more! That's what I pull from when I work Trade Shows. I honestly think that performing close-up magic in restaurants is something that every magician should do at some point in their career. Jeff McBride has a wonderful expression called "flight-time" -- meaning time spent in front of an actual audience. Learning the rudiments of the tricks and being able to do the moves flawlessly is one thing, but being able to perform the routine over and over for a live audiences 50 times or more in one day is invaluable! That is where you learn how to take a trick and make it into a routine, and once you do that, you've learned how to be more than a magician - you've learned how to be an entertainer! On a cruise ship, it can be two weeks or more before you get to present that same show again. Unless you are performing two shows a night in a Las Vegas style production show, performing onstage is so sporadic that it takes so much longer to advance as an entertainer because you don't have the luxury of "flight-time" that you can get by performing close-up magic. TB: At the risk of sounding repetitive, this is exactly what the greats like Eugene Burger and Jon Racherbaumer have been stating for decades. I don't mean to condense their teachings but this is the fundamental question all Magicians need to ask, "What do I want my magic to be?" There are Tricksters of various degrees and then there are Magical Entertainers. Apart from what you've just said what would you add to point up and coming Magical Entertainers in the right direction? HM: Simply this: Analyze your personality and use the strongest elements of it to establish your performing character. In that way, you will always be unique and will never be a "copy" of someone else. Keep performing and gaining that crucial "flight time" and keep a journal and do an honest assessment in writing after each of your shows adding ideas, lines and improvements so that you can make each performance better than the one before. And here is my biggest tip.The easiest way to improve a show is by removing the weakest element. If you have ten tricks in your show and you removed the weakest routine, without adding anything else, you have just improved your show by 10 percent! TB: Harry, that is just great insight and excellent advice. As always, it has been great hanging out with you. I truly enjoy your company and thanks for taking the time to converse. HM: Like-wise Tony. Always nice seeing you. You are very welcome. It has been a real pleasure. (Hidden in this article are deliberate grammatical & spelling mistakes. British Ring Convention News -------------------------------------------- Message by Bob Hayden (UK) Having to face an audience, some possibly with drooping eyelids, who already have enjoyed a packed day of magic, to be the compere of the Late Late Gala starting around 10.30pm must be a daunting task. Not so for this year's compere. Why? It's Danny Buckler. Everybody is alert and there is no nodding off when he's on stage! Danny is one of Great Britain's fastest rising stars of comedy and magic with a unique style that has taken him in a comparatively short period of time around the world. Danny fell in love with performing almost as soon as he could walk but it was at college, when called upon to perform a self devised piece as part of a drama course that he realised this was something he could do in his life. He began his career in the mid nineties as a magician working the shop floor in Harrods. From there he worked his way up through London's tough comedy circuit all the top venues including Jongleurs and the Comedy Store. He also worked as a TV warm up artist on shows as Channel Fours hard hitting show 'Is this your Life' and the award winning sitcom 'Dinner Ladies'. He was soon invited to perform at private functions for celebrities like Liam Gallagher, Bruce Willis and the Sultan of Brunei. Victoria Wood was particularly impressed with Danny's work and asked him to be the opening act on her sell-out 2001 national tour. His top magical moment came when he was asked to perform with Victoria and Imelda Staughnton as part of the show 'Victoria Wood and Friends' at London's Adelphie Theatre. In 2003 he teamed up with fellow magician Mandy Mullen to bring their show 'Two Funny Magicians' to the Edinburgh Fringe. There conjuring remained the mainstay of his act but more recently he has opted more for a story telling approach. This will be Danny Buckler's first appearance at a British Ring Convention but it is doubtful if it will be the last. One of the acts he will be introducing in the Late Late Gala is Ian Keable. Ian Keable has been a professional magician for 20 years. His act is described as a mix of comedy and magic combined with mind reading. He specialises in good natured friendly audience participation. Before becoming a professional entertainer Ian was an accountant. So rather than adding up numbers he found himself predicting them. In developing his act he was influenced by many magicians, particularly Paul Daniels and Billy McComb. He honed his comedic skills in the Comedy clubs of London working with the likes of Jack Dee, Frank Skinner and Harry Hill. When he walks on stage he looks more like a business man than a magician and finds this works for him as the audience aren't expecting him to be funny. One of his heroes is the vaudeville magician. Emil Jarrow who according to Dai Vernon was one of the few who combined sleight of hand magic with belly laughs. Over the years Ian has made a number of television appearances the first of which and probably the most memorable one was New Faces in 1987, where he came second in his heat. His last television show was on Channel Five's The Big Stage hosted by Bradley Walsh. Apart from corporate work, Ian is presently concentrating on touring his one man comedy and magic shows. His first was 'Conjuring Up Comedy' in which he explained, with a mixture of anecdotes, jokes and magic how he changed from being an accountant to a magical comedian. In his second show 'Nothing Up My Sleeve' he talks about and demonstrates some of the techniques he uses to mystify his audience as well as performing different branches of magic such as reading minds, sleight of hand of close-up magic and comedy magic Ian has written a well received book on comedy magic called 'Stand Up, Professional Guide to Comedy Magic'. It is a book that looks in detail at the performing skills and techniques of some of the top comedy magicians around such as, MacKing, Paul Daniels and Michael Finney ; and sets out in detail how you can apply them yourself to improve your own comedy magic. Just some of the subjects covered in this step-by-step manual are: Finding your character The underlying techniques of audience participation The crucial difference between 'lines' and 'jokes' The five ways to S-C-R-A-P all unfunny lines Refining patter with the use of call backs, topping the gag, converting laughter to magic etc Selecting the right assistants and using them correctly Structuring an act Coping with heckling and 'dying the death' on stage How to find work and earn a living from Stand-up This is a book you must have if you are serious in wanting to do stand-up comedy magic. (www.iankeable.co.uk/books ) Apart from performing in the Late Late Gala Ian will also be delivering a lecture, which he has especially devised for the Convention on the Classics of Magic. Included, however, will be plenty of references about how you can improve your comedy technique. Make sure you don't miss this lecture in the Gold Room of Eastbourne's Winter Garden on Saturday afternoon. The comedy magic of Danny Buckner, Ian Keable, The Great Nardini, the comedy vent Steve Hewlett and the glamour and magic of Yogane the Late Late Gala will not have anyone dozing off. We learn from Steve Evans, the organiser of the Close-up Competition that this year's line-up of competitors is very healthy. He also advises that there is still room for two further entrants. If you want to do so you will have to be quick as entry time for the competition will close on 23rd July. So if you are a fully paid up member of the British Ring and are registering for the whole Convention and are interested in entering the Competition for the Zina Bennett Trophy and handsome cash prizes get in touch with Steve immediately on 07900 191958 or by e.mail: stevemagicbloke@aol.com -------------------------------------------- 14.
