Editor's Message -------------------------------------------- Highlight for the week for Michele and I would have to be attending Australian comedy Magician Brad Manuel's lecture in my hometown Auckland, New Zealand. I found Brad to be highly entertaining, very creative and original with a great modern slant on the various routines he presented. - Refer item 3 - review of his lecture. Remember if you have any magic news drop me a line: AW@Alan-Watson.com -------------------------------------------- 2. Three Arrested In Murder Of Young Magician -------------------------------------------- Message by Brandon Jay Scott Brandon Jay Scott .. Sad news, young 19 year old magician Adrian "El Magnifico" Ramos, killed in Anaheim. My condolences to his family. Los Angeles News Authorities say three people have been arrested on suspicion of killing a young magician known as "El Magnfico" who has performed on "The Tonight Show."..... Brad Manuel's Funny Tricks Lecture -------------------------------------------- Message by Richard Webster (NZ) Brad Manuel's reputation had preceded him, and a large group of Auckland magicians turned up to see his highly entertaining and practical lecture. Brad, from Queensland, Australia, easily lived up to everyone's expectations. He started by producing two shooter glasses of Schnapps from his shoe, which he and Alan Watson drank. He followed this with a series of his own hilarious original effects. My favourite was his coin in bottle routine in which the coin became temporarily stuck halfway into the bottle. I also enjoyed his comedy dice stacking routine. Earlier in the evening, he'd borrowed $50, which promptly disappeared. He gave the person who had "given" him the note an opportunity to win it back. Needless to say, he failed at this. Brad then helped a ten-year-old to successfully stack the dice, proving how easy the feat was. It was a treat to see a magician who not only invents and manufactures all his own effects, but also knows how to get the maximum impact from them. A good example of this was "Buckethead," a routine in which a child has his head "pumped up" until it expands to twice its normal size. Brad Manuel included stage, close-up and children's magic in his lecture. I'd recommend his lecture to all magic clubs. He'd also be a great addition to any convention. -------------------------------------------- 4. iTricks Podcast Magic -------------------------------------------- Message by Eric DeCamps (US) Hi Everyone! More Remarkable Magic - Nick Lewin #33 -------------------------------------------- Message by Nick Lewin (US) A little bit about Nick Hello, my friends out there in Cyberland. It has been a very crazed few weeks for me and I have had very little time to concentrate on writing a new column and finding the bandwidth and facility to send it out to my 'Kiwi-Brother' Alan, in New Zealand. So please forgive me for failing to come through with something new in this week's ezine. The good news is that between Kyle and Tony there is no longer any shortage of material of fine writing in 'Magic NZ.' After four plus years of writing various variations of my column for Magic New Zealand, I hope you will allow me the privilege of a slightly erratic schedule! One question that I seem to be constantly asked in the magic community is, "We really enjoy your writing but where can we see you work?" Well, it is a very good question because over the last 25 years my performances have been very scarce for magicians to catch. I haven't played the Magic Castle in 25 years, I have only performed at 6 magic conventions since 1974 and my lectures have been few and far between--mostly for very small and select groups scattered around the globe. I am finally (not retiring) but slowing down from my private, cruise and corporate dates. I am looking forward to becoming more involved in the world of magic. It is a step that I have been looking forward to for many years and in all truth began with my weekly contribution to Magic New Zealand over four years ago. During 2011 I will be traveling the world, but now performing my lecture and magical conventions. This would of course be financial ruin were I not to be proceeding with releasing a series of truly professional routines in the form of books, DVDs and career development coaching. As I plan to be rather selective in my approach to 'uploading' my magical knowledge, I'm sure I will be bridging the gap by continuing some of my more instantly profitable gigs. I would like to announce two upcoming engagements in the magic world which will give me a chance to catch up with my old friends as well as some of my new friends who know me only from my writing. I think you will enjoy seeing the place from where I am talking about comedy magic. I am delighted to say, that I have finally managed to squeeze into my schedule a booking at the 'Mystery Lounge' in Boston on Tuesday, May 25th. I have many friends in the area who remember me from my appearances in the 80s at the 'Comedy Connection' and 'Catch a Rising Star.' I made a whole new group of friends at Hank Lee's 'Magic Concave,' please come by and say hi! I'm looking forward to meeting everyone. I will also be appearing for a week at the Magic Castle in Hollywood from August 23rd-29th. The reason for this 'Never say Never,' occasion is that it is a one week tribute to my hero, mentor and friend Billy McComb; I will also be lecturing on Sunday, August 29th at the Castle. Again I davit friends old and new as I take part in this very special tribute to a very special man! I have tried to avoid promoting myself or any product I am involved with, in the years I have written columns for 'Magic New Zealand.' However, I am happily breaking my thoughts on this topic to promote the new direction I am taking in my career. For details on these gigs email me at nicklewin1@me.com -------------------------------------------- 6. Scripts and Patter- #165 - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com poofersgrl@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com Often as magicians we can fall into the bad habit of rehearsing and scripting our routines so much that every little thing we say and do is planned in advance. Now some may say this is what a professional does. Some may state that this ensures a proper routine or act every time out. These may very well be true statements. However, there also runs the risk of you becoming so fixed on the script that you miss golden opportunities or become extremely stale. When I state about missing opportunities, I am talking about the ability to improv off of situations that happen in every single performance. No audience is ever the same and certainly no helper ever reacts the same way. There are golden opportunities to go "off script" when moments present themselves. We have to see these moments and go with them. By doing so, it shows the audience how versatile you are. It also adds a level of personal fun to the entertainment experience. It is you customizing the script to the situation at hand. Often times these improv moments can and often do get great reactions. When they happen this way, it is a wonderful opportunity to make that a part of the new script. To me a script for any routine is never done or set in stone. It is always evolving and I am always open to the opportunity to make it better. If something happened at a show that got a great reaction, I will seek to add that into my script going forward. Having too rigid of a script can also lead to a stale performance. What tends to happen is that we get so used to the moves and the patter that we tend to end up in this "auto-pilot" mode. Things happen and are stated but they lack any substance. There is no pizzazz to what we are doing or saying simply because we are so used to doing the same thing the same way every time. Audiences are not stupid and we should never lose our respect for them. An audience can sense when you are simply "dialing it in". If you are not in the now, they will know and they will let you know by their lack of response or interaction with you. We must always remember that every time out there, our script needs to come across as fresh as the very first time we created it. So what one can do is to create a script that is more of an outline approach. It is like writing an essay or term paper. In order to get your thoughts in line, you often will write an outline first. This becomes your "roadmap" that guides you through the writing of the paper. As magicians, we can take this outline approach to the scripting we create. Instead of trying to recite and recall every single word and every move to what we do, we can instead create an outline of the important key spots. These key spots are what is essential to the audience understanding and enjoying the routine. As a magician, it allows us to simply know where we need to be at a certain time. However, this also gives one the amazing flexibility to be a bit more open and relaxed in the script. It is not so rigid any longer. The patter and the moves can change and adapt as long as you know where you need to go. In a way it is like a map. As long as you know what your key stops are, you can get to these stops in numerous ways. They may not always be the same route. This allows one to be a bit more fresh each time out. Sometimes the road less travels can be quite a fun journey for not only your audience, but for you as well. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you. -------------------------------------------- 7. Tony Brook In Conversation With Murray SawChuck (Part 1) ------------------------------------------ Message by Anthony Darkstone Brook - Europe/USA Murray SawChuck, or as he is better known, "the CD guy" or "the guy with the hair " and even more recently I heard several people in Vegas refer to him as the "that amazing CD guy with the hair". Murray travels Internationally but now makes Vegas his base. A very long way indeed from his birthplace of Vancouver, Canada. Before he was 18, he was already a Magical Superstar on The International scene and amazed audiences in several countries. He is the epitome of a consummate showman and he possesses that rare quality of being both a strategic and intuitive thinker. I first met him at a Convention some years ago and he had that special something that made him extremely noteworthy. He delivered a flawless performance. I watched from the wings as an audience of experienced Magicians gave him a standing O. I was doubly impressed not only with his skills as a Magical Entertainer but by his incisive grasp of what it takes to be an outstanding performer. He is exceptionally skilled at Stagecraft. I recently met up with him in Vegas and he introduced me to John and Arlene Sawchuk his proud parents who were visiting. http://arleneandjohnny.com (A website Murray made for his parents one Christmas honoring their life and times together.) http://murraysawchuck.com TB: Hello Murray, thanks for taking time out to converse a while ... MS: Hi Tony, always a pleasure talking to you. TB: Y'know , in all my talk shows and articles of this nature , I absolutely avoid asking obvious questions like "how did you get started in magic? " or "when did the magic bug bite?" but in your case, I will make an exception and ask them because the answer reveals a Circle of Magic that reads better than a Hollywood script, ..in a way, you were influenced by Las Vegas and then . well, you tell the story ... MS: Well, I guess that is just so; I was born in Vancouver , Canada in 1980 and at 8 years old I was given a Magic set.but not just any Magic set , it was a Siegfried & Roy Magic set. Now I live in Vegas and along my magical pathway actually got to meet and know Siegfried & Roy. That was truly amazing. TB: Let's fast forward a few years when you opened at The Frontier in Vegas and they came to your show. That was a bittersweet time wasn't it? MS. Yes Tony it sure was .I was going thru some things in my personal life. A divorce. You yourself and others have experienced similar things , but you know the cliché , "The Show Must Go On".well , my contract at the Frontier was for only 2 months but was extended for a further two. Those were some heady months for me. I watched with amazement at the various stars that came to watch the show. One of my most thrilling moments was when I walked on stage and saw Siegfried in the audience. I was awe-struck. A legend at my show, watching me! A kid from Vancouver, Canada who had a dream to have his own show in Las Vegas. Now Siegfried, the man who had changed magic in Las Vegas along with his partner Roy, was watching me ! TB: Now you know why I brought up the question about your first Magic set.something even better happened after the show .. MS: Yes it did Tony. After the show, Siegfried waited till the audience left so that we could chat. We took pictures, and Siegfried invited me to see his show. At their show, I sat in Siegfried's booth and was escorted backstage to meet the famous duo. The respect I was shown by two of the giants of magic, gave me an elation unlike any I had felt before. This wasn't just respect by my peers; this was respect from the top. TB: I bet it was.but let me take you back to when you were 16 and you went to Stan Kramien's Convention in some excellent company .once you got there , you met two people who changed your Life forever .share with us a little of that adventure ... MS: Sure. That was really a huge turning point for me. At the time, I already had several shows under my belt, was doing OK and received many bookings because I was young, good at what I was doing, and a cute kid. However, the only thing that was original about me was that I was young, and doing some pretty cool miracles. I was doing a good enough job fooling adults. Then Shawn Farquhar, my first mentor, encouraged me to go to Brush Prairie, Washington for Stan Kramien's Magic Convention. My parents were understandably reluctant to allow me to go. There was a group of about 12 Vancouver magicians, including Juliana Chen who was going and Shawn assured them that I would be safe. Well, anyway, we all drove down together. The two major headliners that year were Johnny Ace Palmer and Mr. Electric. What an experience that was for me at 16! TB: Ah! Yes! Whatever happened to Shawn ? Just kidding. I first met him at The 2001 SAM Convention in New Orleans. He was competing in the Close-Up contest. Jon Racherbaumer and I were judges. Shawn blew us away and won Joint First Place. I met Juliana once at a FISM and she is amazing . She was also something of an inspiration to you as well.. MS: Oh yes she was ! Many people influenced my early magic, but the person who affected me the most at that time was Juliana Chen. She had just arrived in Vancouver from China, and her act with cards was amazing. It also sparked a creative idea that I was to develop and use later. TB: I can well imagine how you must have been feeling but little did you know, it was going to totally change your Life. MS: Yes it did Tony, much better than I could ever imagine. I still remember it clearly as if it happened this morning. I was standing in the lobby of the hotel when Shawn tapped me on the shoulder and said, "See that couple sitting over there? That's Mr. Electric and Carol! They're legends!" I thought OK but I have to honestly say, at that time, I had no idea who they were. Shawn explained that they were one of the greatest touring cabaret acts in the world. Then Shawn told me that they turned on real light bulbs magically. I just couldn't believe it! As luck would have it , the next day Shawn introduced me to Marvyn and Carol Roy. They didn't perform their act, but they lectured and played a video of it. I was stunned! I couldn't believe how original it was. They were classy, elegant and memorable. That totally changed my life in the magic world forever. End of Part 1 - (Hidden in this article are deliberate grammatical & spelling mistakes. PCAM Update ------------------------------------------- Message by Shawn Farquhar PCAM President This year the 77th annual Pacific Coast Association of Magicians convention is being hosted on the Royal Caribbean Cruise vessel, the Mariner of the Seas from July 11th to 17th. This massive luxury ship with its rock climbing wall, ice skating rink, miniature golf course, dedicated convention centre and beautiful theatre will be home to seven days of magic and fun. This year I wanted the focus of the convention to be on comedy magic and so I enlisted a few of my best friends. Eric Buss, who recently appeared on David Letterman will be presenting a full evening show with his signature style of odd comedy. Speaking of odd, we will also be treated to a full evening of Stephen Bargatze and his outrageous antics. For the family style entertainers we will be featuring Oscar Munoz who was just named Children's Magician of the Year in Blackpool. Oscar is also a consummate sleight of hand artist, having won the IBM Gold Cups and is a regular at the 4F convention. In fact they will be honoring him in 2015! Another family style entertainer is Steven Kline and Dusty. This interactive comedy magic duo features a talking dragon ... no not ventriloquism ... the dragon really talks! I am also proud to announce I have booked this year's Siegfried and Roy Gold Lion Head award winners, Trevor Watters and Lorena. To round out the bill I, Shawn Farquhar, will also be presenting a full evening show featuring much of the material I have used in the past with a few new effects just for fun. Registration is still open and few good cabins are still available. Visit www.magicatsea.com for more details. Cheer, Shawn Farquhar -------------------------------------------- 10. Comedy Magic In Melbourne, Australia -------------------------------------------- Message by Ron Gallagher (Aust) Three magicians (myself included) all with 20+ years of performance behind us went to see a Sydney Magician as part of "Comedy Festival" here is Melbourne. Generally not a bad act, just not a great one. Assistant very pretty, Mic technique average, gags so-so. What the three of us didn't like was the exposure of an effect for the "Comic" effect (minimal though it was) that this might bring. Especially an effect that two of do in our acts. Here is my spin on things, for what it is worth. Comic Magic or being a magician with comedy patter etc if one thing, exposing magic isn't funny, (I mean that is all senses of the statement) . Lets avoid the cheap gag and easy options, of throwing away an effect and exposing it's method as 1 - generally YOU DON'T OWN IT unless YOU created it so don't expose other peoples intellectual property. 2 - It isn't funny, work on the gags, the quality of material and get a routine that relies on YOUR comic talent... Try being "Funny" that would be a start, especially if at a "Comedy festival" Cheers, Ron Gallagher. www.funbiz.com.au -------------------------------------------- 20. Walter Blaney At Magic Collectors Assn. Weekend -------------------------------------------- Message by Walter Blaney (US) The Magic Collectors Assn. will have its annual "MCA Weekend" in Chicago at the Westin O'Hare Hotel, May 13-15. See details at: www.magicana.com We're thrilled to announce that the lead off presenter Friday afternoon will be none other than Walter Zaney Blaney. Walter is going to discuss - and perform - his famous Ladder Levitation. Many regard the Blaney Ladder Levitation - and his hoop - as one of the great innovations in illusion design of the past half-century. As Walter is now retired, this may be your last chance to see the illusion performed by the man who invented it. -------------------------------------------- 21.
