"Beyond Reasonable Doubt" - Charles Gauci & Ross Skiffington -------------------------------------------- Message by Richard Webster (NZ) "Beyond Reasonable Doubt" - Charles Gauci & Ross Skiffington When I heard that two of Australia's leading entertainers were putting on a mentalism show at the Melbourne Comedy Festival, I immediately booked my air fares to Melbourne. I wasn't disappointed. Ross Skiffington and Charles Gauci work very well together, and have created a wonderful evening of comedy, mystery and entertainment. Ross hosted the show with enthusiasm and gentle humor, and Charles was perfect as the psychic and memory expert. Ross opened the show with the Split Deck and the Gold Medallion. He then introduced Charles who performed some of the effects that have made him famous: Eye to Eye, the Three Digit Magic Square and Card Memory. They both performed a hilarious bank night routine using a paper shredder, and their own version of Dream Vacation. The climax of the show was the opening of a large envelope that had been on display throughout the evening. Inside were Charles' predictions of everything that had occurred during the show. He was 100% correct. Ross closed the show by asking the audience if they had demonstrated ESP "Beyond Reasonable Doubt." We stayed behind to congratulate Charles and Ross on a wonderful production. They are both highly talented, professional entertainers with a wealth of experience and excellent stage presence. They should feel extremely proud of what they achieved. When we walked out to the lobby fifteen minutes later, thirty or forty members of the audience were still there discussing what they had seen. Charles told me this happened every night. -------------------------------------------- 3. More Remarkable Magic #30 -------------------------------------------- Message by Nick Lewin (US) Greetings to all my friends and readers. I am sorry to say this is another basically Nick-free newsletter. Not because I have nothing to say, but because I have so much to talk about that I haven't got enough time to write about it in the style and details that it deserves. I finally managed to visit Monday Night Magic and Magical Nights at 'Feinstein's' in New York. What gems these two spots are. I want to give my especial thanks to Peter Samelson, Michael Chaut and Todd Robbins and the not present this weekend, but always there in spirit Jammi Ian Swiss. You will have to wait to next week to hear how and why I found their magic rooms. If you want to find out what the first of my new projects is--then follow this link. I do warn you that I am planning on severely limiting all the projects in my next series of my career check out the following link http://remarkablemagic.com/the-nick-lewin-school-of-comedy-magic/ If you are interested in being kept up to date with everything that is happening then drop me a note at an email to nicklewin1@me.com Nick Lewin www.nicklewin.com -------------------------------------------- 6. Preschool Perceptions - #160 – Kelly and Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com poofersgrl@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com With this article, I would like to do something a bit different. As many of you may know, my wife is my magical partner on and off the stage. Every show I do, we perform together. Kelly is also a magician and specializes in shows for young children. As a preschool teacher, Kelly has a very different and unique viewpoint on how to work with children in a magic show environment. Her experience as a teacher of daycare aged children allows her to utilize skills and lessons that many of us may not be familiar with. I want to let her share some of her thoughts on this subject that we recently were discussing. I introduce you to my wife, Kelly. Working with day care aged children!!?? Some of you might think, yikes, I cannot do that, all they do is scream and fuss and cannot sit still for more than 10 minutes. However, if you structure your show in such a way that keeps them entertained and engaged, you will be surprised at how well they will sit and watch your show and enjoy every minute of it. As a preschool teacher, and having performed numerous shows for young children over the years, I am around young children all the time and I have a sense of what makes them laugh, cry and get frustrated. I also know the verbiage that the children are most used to hearing. I would like to share with you some of what a preschool teacher utilizes on a daily basis as these lessons and skills can be directly applied to your magic and the shows you do. By knowing these skills and tips, you can be sure the children will react positively to you simply because they are used to doing this on a daily basis. Young children are used to certain words/phrases that are used in their daily life at school. These are simple and easy to understand phrases that tell or direct the child to do a specific action .For example, when asking a child to sit down; we use please sit “crisscross applesauce” or “sit on your bottoms”. Back in the day, we might have been told to sit “Indian style”; however, this is not used due to the fact that it is not considered politically correct. However, the terms mentioned above are terms they are familiar with. When stated in this manner, they know what you are asking. This works because they are being told to do this daily. When I have needed the children to quiet down, I ask them to play the “quiet game”. This is a simple and easy game that most understand and makes it fun instead of being stern. I ask the children to see how well they can sit down and remain quiet. As the children are sitting down, I am encouraging them by using phrases such as “let’s see if you all can be as quiet as a mouse” or tiptoe to your seat. Once the children are seated and quiet, I often ask them to give themselves a pat on the back or round of applause for doing a great job. The “quiet game” is meant to get all the children seated quickly and quietly so we can begin our activities. But it is done so in a friendly manner that is not demeaning to the kids. It also empowers them by effective affirmation when they do something correct. One thing I have found out, through both trial and error as well as my experience in the preschool field, a good time limit for a show of this age group is about 30 minutes. Now some of you will disagree with this. You might be saying to yourself, I have done this in the past and kids will sit for a longer period of time. Why should I change? Anything over 30 minutes and the children might get restless, need to go to the bathroom etc. However my reason for doing shows 30 minutes is not so much the lack of attention span but more so from a sense of familiarity. Children are used to short time frames for activities. In my classroom, our activities are arranged in increments of 30 minutes or less. This tends to be a standard in most preschool environments. This way the children are more focused on a certain activity during that time and are more empowered. From my experience in this field, I have noticed that children of that age range like to help. For example, we have classroom helpers for everything from lunch to pushing the chairs in. By having this, it not only engages them in an activity, but also they feel empowered and make them feel special. In a show environment, you can engage them by having them say magic words, or wiggling their fingers. Do not feel afraid to use helpers in your show. Another thing that is a plus (especially if you want to work in preschools/daycares) is to have state clearances. In PA, to work in a school of any kind, you need a fingerprint check, criminal background check and child abuse check. So even if you are not currently working this market but might be considering it, it would be a good rule of thumb to get them. A preschool/daycare would be more likely to hire someone that has these rather than someone that does not. Most of these clearances are either free or you only pay a small fee and can be done online. I am hoping that what I have said might open your eyes and show you that it is not so bad working with the younger children. Use these preschool tips and techniques to your own advantage. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com or contact Kelly at poofersgrl@aol.com. Tony Brook in Conversation with Mark Weidhaas (Part 2) ------------------------------------------ Message by Anthony Darkstone Brook - Europe/USA MW: I had the large telephone banana prop made special from a clown friend of mine – it looks great and I had to get it in the photo. In the show, I use it to get a chuckle when I answer it, and the caller thinks my act has “a peel.” I thank him a “bunch” and then “split.” You know, I really do perform magic in my shows somewhere between the one-liners. I’ve been using the magnifying glass for years. It is part of my logo that Ed Harris made for me. It also acts as a magicians’ wand when I want to subtly show my hand is empty. Anyway, I’m glad you enjoyed the photo. It was an SAM Assembly program – we have two very good photographers in our club, and they offered to have a photo-shoot night. Many of the members took advantage. TB: Interesting. I agree. It is important to portray the character, to play the part, to get into the role so that we can be better entertainers. You live in Colorado Springs, Colorado and you won The Best of Colorado Springs” Award in 2008 and 2009. Share with us some of the background on that …. MW: I love Colorado Springs, nestled up against “America’s Peak,” Pikes Peak. If you or any of your readers are in the area, please do look me up. The awards were a very pleasant surprise to me, voted by the local citizens through our local paper. But the award I have that is dearest to me is the Presidential Recognition award signed by both IBM President Joan Caesar and SAM President Bruce Kalver for the work I did as Logistics Manager for the 2008 Joint IBM/SAM Convention in Louisville. It was a lot of work – I have holes in the soles of two pairs of shoes due to that convention, but it got me hooked (and my wife, Anne hooked too). TB: Richly deserved. As we have mentioned before, you will soon be President of the oldest magic Club in the world and be following in the footsteps of such greats as Harry Houdini. Before I ask you about your thoughts and ideas for the future of The S.A.M please share with us some of your thoughts on Magic Clubs in general …. MW: I’ve always been a staunch supporter of Magic Clubs. Currently, I belong to 4 clubs in Colorado - each is at a different stage, the infant small club where everything is new (what is a magic lecture?), the adolescent medium size club with its growing pains and the elder large club that is filled with wisdom. I enjoy each, participate with each and I grow from each sharing experience. Besides the S.A.M., I am also a member of the I.B.M. and The Magic Circle (A.I.M.C. with Silver Star). I helped create an IBM Ring and eventually became Ring President. I have always seen how a magic club can offer so much in this society of secrets. It gives opportunities to practice and grow, and to move forward. The club is a give-and-take sharing that you cannot have with the Internet. I am disappointed when I hear of a magician who purposely shuns the magic clubs due to fear of theft of ideas, and go it alone. The club is alive and needs to be nurtured with positive participation among friends to grow. TB: I’m happy that you referred to the friendship in Magic. From personal experience I am very pleased with the great many friends that I have made, quite literally, all over the world thanks to Magic. My own empirical experiences of Life have been made richer because of my magical friends. I know this is also very important to you and we’ve touched on “You have a friend in 2010” and the pin but in practical terms how do you see your future role as President and the friendship of Magic? MW: That is what it is all about – friendships. I have made wonderful friendships due to this silly hobby. It is because of these friendships that I have learned and grown to become a confident performer and taken the hobby to a point where I now earn a living with it. My best friend, mentor, and original S.A.M. sponsor when I joined was Alan Shuman, an investment broker and magician near Boston. He was the most giving and sharing member – you did not want to disappoint him by missing a single club meeting. He passed away doing what he loved – performing magic. I am at that point where I can give back to others and help them grow. We have some extraordinary new benefits for S.A.M. members that are about to be revealed. By doing my best to keep this organization great is the best way I can say “Thank You” to all those friends who helped me, and particularly my friend, Alan Shuman. TB: You and I have chatted informally about the International aspects of The S.A.M. The letterhead says “ A Worldwide Organization” and we have Ambassadors of magic namely David Copperfield and Brad Jacobs and several International Deputies like myself in Europe and Alan Watson in New Zealand, others in Israel and Japan, etc … …please share your thoughts on that ….. MW: Sure ..I’d be happy too …Today, we have Assemblies and Members all over the world - 45 different countries have members. We are still an American Organization with American programs such as our Veterans Program, National Magic Week in October, our National Conference and our insurance program, but we have a worldwide membership and many programs that benefit all magicians. Yes, you can be a member of the Society of American Magicians no matter where you live. It’s the oldest and most prestigious magic organization in the world. You too can join the likes of Kellar, Houdini, Thurston, Cardini, Tarbell, Guest, and Christopher. TB: Absolutely. You and I, and I’m sure, many others too, are on the same page on this one …. There are some new ideas that have been launched and a few more are in preparation … End of Part2– Check in next week (Hidden in this article are deliberate grammatical & spelling mistakes. After much hard work, my proofreader & I have included these to please those who enjoy finding them.)Send comments & corrections to:- tbrook47@gmail.com -------------------------------------------- 8. Paul Daniel's Master Class - Los Angeles -------------------------------------------- Message by Ralf Weber (US) Paul Daniel's Master Class is coming to Los Angeles on June 11th, 2010 Watch Paul Daniels on any stage and you somehow know nothing can go wrong. It all looks so easy, so casual, and each effect flows with entertainment. For years Paul Daniels has turned down request after request to reveal his methods of arriving at this level of perfection. Many have tried to copy his style and have even copied his methods and routines but there is a very, very good reason why they have failed to have the same audience appeal. Now, for the first time, Paul is going to reveal HOW AND WHY his routines were developed by taking a small group through not only the methods but also the psychological thinking that creates that deceptively simple appearance. At this very special happening you will have the opportunity to ask about the tricks that YOU want help with and to get the Daniels Touch added to YOUR routines. Many of the biggest names in magic today credit Paul not only for their first big break (as a guest on his TV show), but also as their inspiration for getting started in the business! To participate in this extraordinary event, you must purchase tickets in advance. British Ring Convention News -------------------------------------------- Message by Bob Hayden PRO to the British Ring We are delighted that Charlie Frye & Company will be returning to our Convention in September. For many they were the highlight of the 2006 Convention with their unique original eccentric comedy act of juggling, sleight of hand, physical comedy and much more. If you did not attend in 2006 make sure you are present this year for Charlie Frye and Company will never fail to keep you laughing and applauding at the same time. So who are Charlie Frye and Company? Charlie Frye plays the rubber-faced put upon juggler/magician while Sherry Frye, his wife, is the elaborately bored beautiful assistant. Charlie amazes; Sherry yawns. They are the very personification of America’s rich vaudeville tradition who synthesize skills and a passionate love of their art into something classical yet undeniably fresh – something that astounds even as it entertains. Charlie has the accolade of often being compared to classic comedians such as Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Stan Laurel and Dick van Dyke. In her reviews of Charlie’s stage and close-up work in 2006 Mandy Davis reported he performed a super mixture of magic and juggling to music both impressive and excellent. In his report on Charlie’s lecture “Eccentricks with Charlie Frye” Ross Quinn described it as a whirlwind of magic and juggling, manipulation, humorous anecdotes and dozens of original sight gags adding that Charlie’s personality immediately endeared him to the audience and it had been his privilege to see such a talented performer. Off stage he was the really nice guy as he was on. Charlie Frye will be performing in both the Wednesday Night Comedy Show, the Saturday Night International Magic Show, the International Close-up Show and will be giving another lecture. Make sure you don’t miss Charlie Frye & Company in 2010! How many of you were at the Hastings 1970 Convention? If you were, no doubt you will remember a Dutch magician Goochel-Flip performing in the Gala Show. Flip as be became known was making his debut at a British Ring Convention. What puzzled many prominent magicians watching his act were the modus operandi of several of his moves. What they didn’t know they were seeing for the first time the ‘flip stick move’ invented by him and subsequently used by a number of magicians utilising sunglasses, combs and sharpie pens in their award winning acts. Flip has been inventing countless magical effects since 1957, L & L Publishing producing a 6 volume DVD set of his creations. Over the years Flip has won numerous awards and has a host of TV appearances to his credit worldwide. Rumour has it that Flip is thinking of retiring in the near future. If this is correct don’t take the chance of missing what possibly could be your last opportunity of seeing this highly acclaimed creative magician in action. He will also be lecturing. It is bound to be a lecture that will be attracting a capacity audience. These are just two of the Stars of Magic you will be able to watch and enjoy, listen to and learn in Eastbourne. So get your registration off to Neville Johnson by down loading the Registration Form from the British Ring website www.britishring.org.uk Whatever your particular brand of magic is your forte you will find there is something for you at the 2010 British Ring Convention in Eastbourne. -------------------------------------------- 11.
