Sid Lorraine's Magical ChatterBox -------------------------------------------- Message by James Alan Sid's adventure continues on the high seas as he makes his way to England in All Tied Up: http://bit.ly/9HtYvh Follow: http://twitter.com/sidlorraine -------------------------------------------- 4. "John Calvert - His Magic and Adventures" -------------------------------------------- Message by Ulf Morling (Sweden) "John Calvert: his Magic and Adventures" could very well be the DVD of the year. "John Calvert - his Magic and Adventures" is the title of a new DVD about the living legend and the great magician and adventurer, who will soon be preparing for his Grand Jubilee performance in London in August 2011, when he turns 100 years old. After the unfortunate stroke last year, when John and Tammy were touring and playing close to 50 towns and cities in the United States, he now seems to be fully recovered - check the DVD for yourself. From his home in Bowling Green, KY, the 98-year old Calvert is sitting in his favorite corner and tells about his fantastic life in a most relaxed manner, as charming as ever. Personally, I could listen to him for hours, as he tells about his childhood in New Trenton, Indiana, the most beautiful pictures are shown together with a perfect music, and so it continues throughout his fascinating life story that ends with John and Tammy taking a walk in the park. John Calvert's life, however, has never been "a walk in the park". Instead it has been one big death defying adventure. The biggest mystery is perhaps how this magic daredevil managed to survive all the dangers he encountered, from category 6 hurricanes on board his first sailing yacht Sea Fox (that he bought from Henry Ford), to pirate attacks, flying stunts, and a serious crash with his own Douglas DC-3 passenger plane with the entire ensemble, including the assistants and a ballet group - not to mention all the illusions on board. When you see the wreckage of the DC-3, I think you will agree it was a miracle that only the pilot, i.e. Captain Calvert himself, was seriously hurt with a broken leg. The rest of the passengers were all black and blue, but nothing some extra pancake couldn't fix! This was in 1947, and the show went on as scheduled with John limping with one leg in a cast. It should be noted that Mr. Calvert not surprisingly is the only magician that traveled with his company on board a passenger plane, owned and piloted by him. That is, when he didn't prefer to take his company on board his yacht with plenty of room for the illusions as well. He crossed the Atlantic several times, toured Africa this way, and he also navigated his way to the Far East on his world tours. There were many of them. This DVD is simply a master piece. It is so well made that it very well could be shown on national television any time. As a matter of fact, I hope it will. The film is one hour and 21 minutes long but there is never a dull moment, mostly thanks to the fact that this giant of man John Calvert is sitting in his home in Kentucky, now 98 years old, telling a story that is greater than life just like him. His interacting remarks, storytelling and explanations are all sequences made with a perfect timing, and his profound voice is of course that of an actor. For the first time you can also watch a hardworking John Calvert backstage -- from early morning before a full evening show. Now he is being a demanding perfectionist with great authority, and with the stage manager and stage hands taking notes while listening to his instructions. Many sequences and still pictures are shown for the first time. One is when a 20-year old John Calvert is playing the banjo. Another is when he started his full evening show in 1932 only 22 years old - the same show he still does today! He is dressed in tails and has an impressive moustache ŕ la Clark Gable, who later became his friend. What strikes me is that John Calvert looks older on these pictures than today! Another good friend was Errol Flynn, shown in the DVD. It is however a disappointment that this wonderful, intriguing tale hardly mentions one of John Calvert's biggest successes, namely his two year run with his magic show on Broadway with a full house every night. I also miss his rather remarkable acting career. He has made many movies, in some of them as the star, and in the 1940's he became famous as "The Falcon", a detective who also was a skilled magician in a series of movies. Is maybe the former actor John Calvert more introvert than the magician? I don't think so. Perhaps the professional producer and filmmaker Fred Calvert - John's nephew -- wanted to concentrate on magic only. There is one more important item to mention about this entertaining movie. Already from the start the outgoing and charming John Calvert was lucky enough to be surrounded by the most beautiful assistants and gifted chief assistants. But when Tammy came into his life in 1960, this longest running show in magic history got a whole new dimension, and so it has been ever since. You can follow Tammy from the early years and enjoy her fine acting, her strong charisma and wonderful smile. Her stage presence always matched John's stage presence - something that never had happened before. Let's only hope that the younger generation will buy this real life fairytale and watch it over and over. It will give young magicians a marvelous background and insight of the art of magic. They will meet several of the leading magicians from the early 20th century, like Howard Thurston, Harry Houdini, Harry Blackstone Senior and others. John Calvert himself has so much to teach them - you learn it by just watching and having fun at the same time. Keep in mind that this DVD is a limited edition that will be priceless one day when the wonderful Calverts are gone. -------------------------------------------- 5. March Issue of Genii -------------------------------------------- Message by Richard Kaufman (US) Yes, it's true! The March issue of Genii is now on its way to all subscribers. This month's extravaganza begins with my own "Genii Speaks," in which I talk about the new line of Tenyo for 2010. You get Jon Racherbaumer's "On the Slant," certainly the most unusual column in any conjuring magazine. We feature "Now Performing," which gives you the low-down on whose performing where at The Magic Castle, and in New York, Chicago, and Boston. Roberto Giobbi's "Genii Session" is next with a new handling of "The Einstein Card Trick"--self working and smart, too. Tony Giorgio returns after a long hiatus with a new installment of "The Giorgio Letters" in which he talks about the colorful slang of the hustler. The second installment of Max Maven's new column "Lost Horizons" describes a self-working mystery of mentalism called "Diskette." "Radnevsky's Real Magic" is Prakash Puru's explortation of an innovative off-Broadway show starring Peter Samelson, Dennis Kyriakos, and Luke Gopnik, with an additional piece by Luke's proud dad, New Yorker magazine writer Adam Gopnik. And we haven't even hit the big feature yet! Next David Regal interviews creative wizard Angelo Carbone, whose many inventions and marketed items mark a high point in magical creativity. Then we are treated to seven tricks from Angelo. The issue wraps up with "Light from the Lamp" in which Jamy Swiss, Dustin Stinett, and David Oliver review books, videos, and tricks. Another great issue for only $4.50 (the price when you subscribe for one year and get a free copy of the Harry Anderson/Jon Racherbaumer 32-page Jinx). Meet And Greet - #155 - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com Ever have that awkwardness when you get to an event and realize that trying to find the main contact is like trying to find a needle in a haystack? Have you ever felt weird by showing up at the event and the client simply does not know who you are? Even though you may be wearing clothes that simple screams magician, the client still does not put 2 and 2 together. They may have seen your website or photos numerous times but at that very moment they suddenly develop amnesia. How can you overcome these awkward meet and greet moment and how can we set up practices so that you are perceived as a professional the moment you get at an event? You want to make that first greeting with a client a good one and also make a favorable first impression with them. How can you do this and do it well? What can you say and do to ensure it goes over well? You do not want to waste any of your set up time and you do not want to take time away from the client's duties. You want to keep it short and sweet and professional. You want just enough for both parties to know who each other is and let them know you are there. You can then get the quick information you need to begin set up and have the client pleased that you have things under control. Often times the client at the event may not even be there or they may be involved in other things. In this case, you need to ask ahead of time about who you should ask for upon arrival. In my talks with the client (as well as my agreements and contracts I send out) it always states what time I am arriving and who I should ask for upon arriving at the event. I cannot always assume it is going to be the client. It could very well be someone else. Asking ahead of time saves me a lot of time and frustrations. I also ask for the contact and client's cell phones as part of my confirmation agreement with the client. This way I can touch base with the client as I approach the venue. By doing it this way, they know I am about to arrive and can prepare accordingly. When you arrive at the event venue, there are certain rules I always try to abide by: - I never will walk into a house or private residence even if the door is open and others are walking in. I will always knock or ring the doorbell. This is just a common courtesy. - Do not assume that the person answering at an event is the client. In many times they may not be and may just be trying to assist you. - If you are doing a family show, do not assume that the spouse will know who you are or that you are coming. In many cases it is one spouse who usually handles all the arrangements. - When someone does approach you, I will always simply state who I am and that I am the entertainer and politely ask for the contact that I am supposed to touch base with. - When meeting the client, a nice smile and a firm handshake can really say many things before any words are ever spoken. It is just a polite gesture to show you are a professional. - After the handshake I will simply state who I am and that I am their entertainer for the event and excited to be there. I will ask them to show me to the stage or performance area and make sure I have what I need. This is my moment to take a quick sweep to ensure I have everything from them. If I need something, I can take this moment to ask for it while I start to bring things in and set up. I like to do this now because once the client leaves, it is often hard to get them back to you. You also do not want to have to keep bothering them. This is my time to make sure I have what I need and then ask the client if they have any questions for me. - If everything is good at this point, I can thank them again for having me and state everything looks great and that I will start to bring things in to set up. I will ask if bringing stuff in a certain way is still OK with them. This is always planned out ahead of time, but I always like to ask again just to be sure. Once again it is about greeting them and making that first positive impression. These are very simple concepts but ones that really can make a lasting impression if followed. People often forget that the first impression you make can really set the tone of the event going forward. I never consider my job starting when the curtains open. Part of being a professional is all the little things many of us take for granted. Meeting and greeting your client appropriately is an important skill to learn to do well. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. Tony Brook in Conversation with Norm Nielsen - Part 1 ------------------------------------------ Message by Anthony Darkstone Brook - Europe/USA Norm Nielsen knows Magic. He knows how to perform it. He knows how to create it. He knows how to build it. He knows how to collect it. He is part of an elite group of Magicians who can speak with great knowledge on several aspects of the Art of Magic. In all likelihood, he is the single most qualified authority on Magic Posters. Together with his charming and gracious wife Lupe, he lives in a wondrous and enchanting home in a Las Vegas suburb. Their home exudes an air of enchantment and very positive Magical energy. Sharing that home with them is their amazing and very magical dog, Misty, a born performer in her own right. I had met Norm briefly a few years ago. We re-connected through Gilles, a mutual friend in Paris. Norm was informed I was going to Vegas. He kindly extended an invitation for me to visit him and Lupe at their home. What a delightful and memorable time. I was greatly honored to be treated to a personal tour of Norm's vast and impressive collection of Posters. I was thrilled and much honored to be asked to sign his Guest book. www.nnmagic.com TB: Hello Norm. Thank you for taking time to converse. Over the years, much has been written about you in various prestigious publications and sites. You are indeed well-known internationally by magicians and lay people. I read somewhere that it was your barber that got you hooked on magic. I understand you followed him around trying to figure out how he did his cigarette tricks. Please share with us some of those early years and how you managed to work out the methodology of his tricks. NN: It's a pleasure to have this opportunity to share with you Tony. When I was nine years old, my dad took me to a barber, that my dad knew performed magic tricks. Little did he know the effect it would have on me. The barber (named Herman Raditz), vanished a cigarette several times and made it reappear. Being a shy boy, I didn't find him again until two years later. On Sundays, Herman would go to several different taverns in the afternoon, and I would sit on the side drinking a 7-Up and watch him perform half a dozen tricks for the customers. After considerable repetition I began to learn how the tricks were done. Herman would not show me the secrets openly, but knew I would learn by watching a number of times. When I was in my teens, Herman took me to my first magic convention in Whitewater, Wisconsin - sponsored by the Houdini Magic Club of Wisconsin. At the convention, I was exposed to my first real magic shop at the dealer's room, where I met Joe Berg and bought my first trick which was a Color-Changing Silk Tube. TB: At that first convention, you were inspired by Neil Foster. What was it that Neil said or did that propelled you to enroll in The Chavez School of Magic in LA? NN: Neil Foster and Al Sharpe appeared on the gala show of the convention. Al Sharpe did a Miser's Dream, which was very inspirational, but when I saw Neil's act, I was blown away. I heard from someone that Neil was teaching at the Chavez School of Magic. So when I graduated from high school my plans were to go to California and attend the Chavez College of Magic. TB: I understand that you had a bit of a tough time whilst you attended the Chavez school. You worked at a factory and bused at tables whilst you were putting in 5 hours a day, 5 days a week at the school. Well, that's' dedication. Tell us a bit about those experiences. NN: That is funny; I never thought this to be a very tough time because I was fulfilling my dreams. Spending five hours a day doing magic was a piece of cake, and in order to support myself I had to work. So I worked on the midnight shift at Lockheed for seven or eight months, and then through a friend got a job as a busboy at the King's Arms Restaurant in Hollywood. TB: You became quite skilled and were ready to make your mark but an Agent in Hollywood literally changed your Life and indeed your perception of show-business by a single remark.. NN: Yes. I graduated from the Chavez school in 1953 and I had learned all the technical skills but I still needed to develop into an Entertainer. The Agent you are referring to said, "You are magician #453 with this Chavez routine and very skilled at it. Now you must begin to throw out the act you have learned. Develop something of your own." Harsh though it may sound, it was indeed the best piece of advice anyone had ever given me. All I really wanted to do was make a living at what I loved to do. TB: That you most certainly did. You are quite literally known the world over for your signature effect with the white violin. How did that evolve? NN: Initially I did the Chavez routines, and worked with doves, cards, cigarettes and a large Zombie. But I knew I had to find something different. The first thought was to do a floating trumpet with the keys moving, but I soon realized that the audience would not be able to see the keys moving and it wouldn't mean anything. Then I had a picture in my mind of a violin floating instead of the Zombie ball. I love the sound of a violin anyway, which enhances the effect. It took several years to develop the violin. The first time I tried it was at the Playboy Club in Los Angeles. On my last show, I asked the band to play something as close to "violin sounding" as they could. There was no vanish at the end, and no climax, and I did not perform it again for the next six months. Then I found a violinist who was the first violinist from the Turkish Symphony Orchestra. His name was Feti Kopez. He was visiting with a neighbor of mine in Kenosha, Wisconsin. I asked him if he could record some eerie music for the Floating Violin I was working on. He said: "We are having some guests over tonight, and if you will do the Floating Violin for them I will be in the adjacent room watching you and can play the violin." It worked very well, as it gave a lot of life to the violin. He played an old Turkish lament of a mother losing her son. Talk about eerie! Later he recorded the music for me. TB: In common with many Magicians and indeed lay people, I have experienced the sheer joy and pure enchantment that you create with that effect. What an amazing background story! Indeed the story about the music is just magical as well. You have performed that effect the world over at several prestigious venues and much has been written and talked about regarding that effect. Personally, I am rather fond of the text you kindly shared with me; This would be an appropriate point to quote John Fisher's words from the book Paul Daniels and the Story of Magic: "This warm, engaging performer weaves a very special spell of wonder etc., ... Nielsen's specialty, however, is his floating violin, rightly considered to be one of the most beautiful illusions in magic. The instrument takes on a bewitching life of its own as it soars, spins, and plays hide-and-seek behind a silk scarf in Nielsen's hands. Balanced precariously across the strings, the bow moves tantalizingly to and fro to play hauntingly of their own accord. In a last attempt to tame the instrument, the magician throws the scarf high into the air. In less than a second, the violin literally melts away. Nielsen walks forward to acknowledge his applause; from the wings the violin enters at ground level and makes its way to his side. As Nielsen takes his bow, the violin dips the head of his fingerboard as its own cheeky mark of respect. Seldom has a magician endowed a supposedly inanimate object with such telling personality." Reading words like that must be, no pun intended, music to any performer's ears. Given this wonderful description, you must be overjoyed knowing that your years of work in creating this Masterpiece was all worthwhile. NN: Yes you are right Tony. You know, it is indeed gratifying for any performer or inventor to know that one's work is appreciated. To this day, it gives me personally great joy every time I perform it. TB: I can understand that, it is why we perform . the applause, the acknowledgements. Nevertheless, you told me that you have retired from performing. You said that your last performance was on 28 September, 2008 at the famous London Palladium at the Siegfried and Roy Tribute Gala show. Please share with us the background on that show and your final performance. End of Part 1 - Check in next week (Hidden in this article are deliberate grammatical and spelling mistakes. Peter Eldin's Books are among the Top 25% -------------------------------------------- Message by Peter Eldin (UK) The Public Lending Right figures for 2008/9 have just been released and once again Peter Eldin's books are among the top 25% of borrowings from public libraries in the United Kingdom. This is remarkable because Peter specialises in non-fiction for children and the majority of books appearing in the Public Lending Right figures are fiction for adults. Magicians know of him for his several books on magic and his contributions to The Magic Circular, Abracadabra and other magic magazines but magic is a very small part of his output. He has also written books on Cats, Transport, Trees, Puzzles, Jokes, Gardening, Mysteries and many other subjects. Name almost any subject and Peter has probably written about it. Peter is a successful freelance writer with several best-selling books to his credit. His success is undoubtedly due to the fact that he has a rapport with children and knows instinctively what they will like. He does not talk down to his readers but still manages to import factual material that is interesting and informative in a way that children of all ages can understand. He also writes for adults! -------------------------------------------- 9.
