Jack White IBM International President Suffered Diabetic Stroke -------------------------------------------- Message Jack & Lynn White forwarded on by Tony Wilson International President Jack White suffered a diabetic stroke on July 20. It caused him to lose the use of his legs and ultimately to land in a physical therapy facility in San Diego where he lives. Jack is working hard at his therapy as well as performing his presidential duties from his bed. From time to time the numbness in his lower back has disappeared and then returned. However, his doctors see this as a positive step. He has also noticed the touch of his therapist on his feet and ankle a few times. Obviously, progress is going to be slow, but progress is progress, and Jack is all for it. On September 9, Jack is transferring to the Veterans Hospital in San Diego where they specialize in spinal cord injuries. Jack is a U.S. Army veteran and is very grateful that the VA is an option for him. He will probably reside at the VA for at least a month. Jack is extremely grateful for all of the cards, good wishes and prayers that his fellow magicians have sent. You have no idea what an positive impact it has on Jack when he receives a funny card or a note from his brotherhood. Jack is determined to overcome this ‘bump in the road,’ and with everyone’s wonderful support, he knows he can do it. Thanks again. Jack & Lynn White -------------------------------------------- 3. 2009 Milbourne Christopher Awards -------------------------------------------- Message by Bill Andrews (US) Milbourne Christopher was born in 1915 and passed on in 1984. New Magic History Website -------------------------------------------- Message by Tom Ewing Your many readers around the world may be interested to know that I have launched a new magic history website. You can find it at www.mahatmaland.com. I am very fond of Mahatma magazine and wanted a site that at least gave a nod of gratitude to that publication. Also, as you'll see when you check it out, I had planned on writing a book on the history of magic in Philadelphia from colonial days to the present along the lines of my Conjurors and Cornfields: Magic on the Indianapolis Stage, but then decided the web would be much more dynamic, colorful and more easily and constantly refreshed. In the next few weeks I will have a complimentary full-color PDF version of my Kellar's Egyptian Hall monograph, a story of Houdini in Philadelphia, and an updated and color edition of my monograph on Frederick Eugene Powell. There is already an article on Thurston in Philadelphia on the site. I invite your readers to check it out. Thanks for your continued efforts on magic's behalf. -------------------------------------------- 5. Rare Houdini Belongings Discovered in Austin, Texas -------------------------------------------- Message by Kent Cummins (US) Austin, TX - Harry & Bess Houdini return to the Driskill Hotel Austin magicians have discovered rare Houdini belongings given to a local man over 50 years ago by a lifelong friend of the famous escape artist. Kent Cummins, the founder and Executive Director of The Kent Cummins Magic Camp and a Special Consultant to the Society of American Magicians presented the items at the historic Driskill Hotel, the Houdinis' home away from home when performing in Austin. Austin oilman Jim Baldauf recalls, "It was in 1955 when I was a budding boy magician, and Houdini's old friend, Jim Bard, was in his mid 80s. He would pull out his scrapbooks and share stories- and rare memorabilia- related to his and Houdini's careers. They started out in show business together, touring with the Welsh Bros. Circus in 1896. After the gigs, they would go out and shoot pool." In addition to a collection of posters, letters and postcards, Bard passed on to Baldauf personal Houdini belongings such as a statuary bust of the magician, and a stage coat worn by Houdini's wife, Bess. As spelled out in letters from Bard, Bess gave the coat to Mrs. Bard in the 1920s, and Houdini gave the bust to Jim Bard some years earlier. Only two other copies of the sculpture are known to have survived, one in David Copperfield's collection, and the second in another major Houdini collection. The stage coat, designed and handmade by Bess for a European tour, is a one-of-a-kind rarity that exists nowhere else in the world. "I really didn't know the value of what I had until I consulted with local magicians and studied a new biography which describes the lifelong friendship of Houdini and Bard," Baldauf said. "Since then, several private collectors have expressed interest in the original items, but I decided to make reproductions available to the general public, and to let some of the revenues benefit two non-profit magic groups." Kent Cummins and his daughter, Carolyn (wearing the Bess Houdini stage coat!) performed a tribute to Houdini during the event. Kent Cummins says the news conference was the first public showing of the Houdini items; the sale of reproductions will kick off a fundraising campaign for the non-profit Austin Magic Camp. The Kent Cummins Magic Camp was founded in 1993 in Austin, and now helps nearly 1,000 children each year enjoy the fascination and fun of juggling, puppetry, and MAGIC! For more information or to purchase these rare items, contact Kent Cummins: kent@magiccamp.com. -------------------------------------------- 7. Remarkable Magic #9 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message by Nick Lewin (US) Nearly a relaxing week at home. I had wonderful plans for this past week. They included editing some magic videos for my blog, visiting with friends, finalizing two new releases for my 'Perfect For the Pro' series, catching movies with my wife, enjoying my daughters visit from Boston and playing with the puppies. It was not to be. I was sitting in the living room finishing my monthly column for the 'Linking Ring' when Susan burst into the room with an ash white face and I assumed something terrible had happened. It had. My extremely well deserved, and highly overdue, vacation had disappeared like a diamond ring attached to the world's most powerful Ring Flight. I had 12 hours to pack, and get ready to fly to Athens. The first part was easy because I never unpack-it is the only logical way to handle a schedule like mine. It did however leave me with a lot of things to do in very little time. I reluctantly set aside my computer. When you are a performer you must be ready to perform. I left our house the next morning at 5:15 AM, not quite sure what working situation I was heading into. The prop bag I carry on the plane holds 45 tricks while still fitting into an overhead compartment. These are all tricks that can be performed onstage in the 2000 seat theaters that seem to be the norm on most of the ships I find myself working. I traveled for 30 hours and performed two 55-minute shows the night I arrived. The next night I performed two 20-minute shows and my job was completed even before jet lag had set in. I have long considered the major difference between a Pro and a 'non-pro' is how prepared they are to perform a show when the prep time is non-existent. The only thing I forgot to pack was the correct chord for my MacBook Pro. To be honest I would rather have forgotten my Die Tube or Thumb Tip, however it did give me a splendid chance to scour Naples in order to buy a new adapter. A pink eyed and ancient Sri Lankan quickly adopted me and acted as my guide and interpreter during the quest. Throughout our mission he spoke animatedly about intricate details of English and Sri Lankan cricket. I hadn't the heart to tell him I know nothing whatever about the game. So that is my week for you in a nutshell, however I would like to add a little magical postscript to the column. In the preceding week I had a chance to experiment in an intimate home setting with two new tricks. Both effects had been obtained from the estimable Martin Breese during my recent visit to the UK. Both were winners. The setting was a late night group of friends gathered in our home, drinking Grand Marnier and tequila. I thought it was a perfect time to perform a little 'Bizarre Magic.' I began by warming them up with Martin's ingenious 'Cyclops Box' and was amazed at the impact it created. It is one of those props that is so sneaky you get a giant kick just out of performing it. They loved it and were thoroughly fooled and intrigued. My final effect was Martin's 'Jack is Back,' which is a glorious routine involving Jack the Ripper and some very cool props that look so authentically aged, that they might well have been swiped from a Scotland Yard museum. The trouble with most 'Bizarre Magic' is that there is a great deal of talking and dramatic build-up and then a very anti-climatic ending, using a plate-lifter or some such bit of nonsense. Not this one. 'Jack is Back' not only provides you with a great visual finale, but it has a twist in the tail that is truly hair-raising! This ending is only casually mentioned in the instructions but DON'T leave it out-it is quite literally a killer. My friends were not only entertained and fooled, but more than slightly spooked. For the right kind of performer this is a 'must have' routine, check it out on Martin's website. Well, that was my week, how was yours... Agents: Friend or Foe? - #134 - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com Whenever you bring up the word agent to a fellow entertainer, you better be ready for a long discussion or a very short one ending in someone running off frustrated. The term "agent" just tends to bring out bad memories, bad experiences or just leave bad taste in people's mouths. It seems no matter who you ask; you will always get a strong opinion. But what is it about working with an agent or agency that gets us frustrated or nervous? What is it about them that makes us uneasy and has us treading carefully? Is there also a way in which to work with agents that simply works and makes logical sense? My answer is yes if you learn a few things and come to the table with a bit of knowledge and research. I think a lot of the fear of working with an agent stems from the unknown. It is that uneasy feeling that somehow they are out to "get you "or "use you" for their own monetary gains. I think this feeling is natural but it is not fully justified. How can anyone think this way if one does not know for sure? In this day and age I believe in showing respect to gain respect back. So what can we remember and learn when dealing with agents? - Do not start off thinking they are leeches waiting to suck out everything from you. Thinking this way from the start will only have you projecting the wrong attitude and wrong impression. Instead, give them the benefit of the doubt and show respect upfront. The agency will see this and you will have a much better way of viewing their reaction back to you and know if it is genuine or not. - Remember that you are representing the agent in every show you do for them. You always must give 100% effort because you are a professional. You represent them and the services and quality they stand for. - Just as much as you are representing them, NEVER forget that they are also representing YOU. Too many entertainers view an agent relationship as one-sided. It is really a two way street. They represent you as much as you representing them. Their attitude and how they deal with things effects you as well. - Whenever you work with any new agent, always ask to speak with them in person. If they are serious about what they do, they will not have a problem with it. This is your chance to see for yourself how professional or unprofessional they are. Like any job, there must be a "fit" that takes place between agent and entertainer. This is your chance to hear them out and to also ask questions you may have as well. You can often find out in this meeting (or interview) if the agent is respectable and one you may want to work with. - Do not feel afraid to ask for references. They may want to do the same so there should be no reason for you asking also. You want to hear from other entertainers or their past clients. This gives you a feel for how they work and gives you a perspective from someone other than the agent themselves. - Do not fear talking about the money and commission issue. Most entertainers shy away when asking and talking about money. Many feel that they simply must take what the agent is giving and there is no room for negotiation. This simply is not true and you should not think this way. You are a professional and there is simply no reason why you can't talk about your fee as well as how they base their commission off of you. This is where you can come to an agreement upfront on what works best for you both. You should not have to lower your feel substantially simply to give them a bigger cut. Talk it out and be open and honest with each other. Doing so upfront saves a lot of hassle down the road. - Build the relationship with every agent. The problem is that they deal with so many entertainers' day in and day out. You do not want to be seen as entertainer B. You want to be seen as yourself and you want them calling you by name. You do this by building a relationship with them. Let them see your importance and do that through a great show, great service and great customer service back to them and their clients. - Ask up front the exact process they go through from prospect call to completion of the gig. This is very important as each agent works differently. Have them walk through the process with you and make any adjustments with them if you feel something may work better for you both. Some agents will do all the client calls and Q and A for you and not want or allow you to talk to the client prior to the event. Others will make the initial contact and ask you to follow up with the client for the details. There is no right or wrong here. It is what works best for you that is agreed upon by the agent as well. Just know the process before hand so there are no surprises later on. - Find out what information the agent needs to best be able to sell your services. No one knows your show better then you do. It is up to YOU to make the agent see your show the way you do and see the value in it. Have them see your website and give them full promo kit as well as letters of reference and people they can talk to. They need to know who you are and who you are not. Supply them with as much information and materials as you can to make this happen. - When at an event, it is a policy to NEVER send out or hand out your own material. This is just bad taste and can ruin the respect and relationship you are after. As much as you may LOVE to send a prospect to YOUR site, do not do so. You are working for the agent and it is only right to give out the agent's card and send them to the agent's website. Now most agents will allow you to write your stage name on the card and materials you hand out. This way the prospect can mention you when they call to the agency. Some may even allow you to use your own materials as long as the contact information is their own. - If in doubt always ASK. Never ever assume anything. I always will ask for everything if I have any questions about anything. - Always be a professional when it comes to paperwork and phone calls. Nothing will make you look more like the pro you are then being prompt in your replies, calls and how you work with the agent. - When done a gig, always send out a thank you card or email to the agent. This may seem trivial but it gets noticed and they will thank you for it. If a lay person or client enjoys what you did for them, ask them if they would not mind calling or sending an email to the agent letting them know how much they enjoyed what you did. I hope these simple pointers will get you feeling a bit more at ease working with agents. If you follow them, I am sure you will not only be working with them, but build better working relationships as well. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. Copperfield In Melbourne, Australia -------------------------------------------- Message by Ron Gallagher (Aust) I saw Copperfield in Melbourne 12 years ago and loved the show. Did excellent routines, Did the snow production and Flying etc. In the meantime who hasn't seen his various YouTube routines, being cut in half etc, etc. So you can imagine I had high expectations of what was going to be a great night to celebrate my Birthday Sat 15th Aug. $510 for two seats, and happy to pay for what I was about to watch. Little did I know 1 1/2 hrs later I would be in my car after watching revised versions of the same effects I saw 12 years ago and although the car production was truly spectacular it was not being cut in half, flying, or any such truly unique "Copperfield" moment. I won't be going again if he comes out. I would have been better off going and seeing Slavas snow show again, as that has "Magic" moments that 10 years after I saw it, I still remember and at 1/3 of the cost. -------------------------------------------- 11. Latest British Ring Convention News -------------------------------------------- Message by Bob Hayden PRO to the British Ring 2nd September We have continuously up-dated as to who will be performing in both the stage and close-up shows so it is now time to put the spotlight on the lectures/workshops that are to be given in Southport and wherever possible the content of the lecture. The organisers have made every effort to make the lectures as diverse as possible and to include at least one to suit your particular interest in magic. Here is a summary of the lectures that will be given over the course of the four days. Stand-up/Stage Magic: Pavel will be giving a lecture entitled "Best Of" in which he will be performing and explaining a dozen of his proven and successful stand-up effects. A few are ancient (and therefore may have been forgotten) others will be his latest hits. If you are new and commercial effects for stage, stand-up, parlour or even your children's show you will certainly learn something you can easily include in your next programme. Mental Magic: Sean Taylor is known as a comedy magician and mentalist and is able to fit his one hour show into a briefcase. With a background as a marketing and management consultant and a highly developed intuition has enabled him to 'read' his audience and led him to create a truly remarkable mind reading act. His workshop "Selling the Show" is how to sell magic as an entertainment. You will gain valuable advice from Sean irrespective of the form of magic your particular forte is.  Balloon Modelling: In any Balloon Modelling Workshop that Mike Stokes gives his instructions are always clear and presented with a great sense of humour. This year his workshop has the intriguing title of 'Let's get away from Swords - the alternatives!' Even if you have no experience of balloon modelling and would like to include it in your programme you will most certainly benefit from Mike's tuition. Close-up: Hayashi's lecture concentrates on his cutting-edge work in the fields of coin and card magic. He teaches mind-blowing routines that can be performed with a regular pack of cards and four ordinary coins. These are the items he carries on his person everyday of his life which enable him to spontaneously do an entire show anytime, anywhere. He covers routines which range in difficulty from intermediate to amazingly easy. Children's Magic: Terry Herbert is acknowledged worldwide as the Crowned Prince of Children's entertainers with a lifelong experience in doing so. He will be showing some of the tricks he regularly uses and those most important 'bits of business' which children love. Next he explains the tricks and what effect he is trying to achieve. Here is an opportunity for you to learn from a Grand Master of children's entertainment. Stagecraft: Brando & Silvana will be delivering a lecture on Theatrical Magic that embraces dramatic structure, motivation, logical justification for the magic, personage, and the use of different techniques that can enhance the magic. It is a lecture on our art that is rarely available let alone given and is one which if you wish to heighten your persona you should attend. Close-up: Ed Ellis specialises in card and rubber band magic. He is a master at card manipulation and brings a real sense of the impossible to his moves. You are particularly advised to look out for his effect 'Ringature'. It has been described as a close-up workers dream effect. His DVD 'Totally Blue It' has been described as the best colour changing deck routine ever seen. This is a lecture you card manipulators must not miss. Ventriloquism for Children: In his lecture 'Talk to my Hand', John Kimmons will not only be exploring and showing how ventriloquism with hand held animal figures can add to and enhance your children's show but will be detailing the skills to master this art form. It is one that is increasingly becoming popular as an alternative to balloon modelling and one you may well want to adopt. Close-up/Stand-up Magic: Be prepared for anything when Thom Peterson takes to the stage to conduct a workshop that draws from his considerable collection of close-up and stand-up routines. He will be giving slants on presentations that have enabled him to label himself as 'An Amazing Guy' and approaches that make an audience laugh like a little child and makes everyone of his shows an interactive one where the audience does not just watch but experience the magic and comedy. It is possible you will be inspired to adopt a completely different approach to the way you perform. Act Development: Many of you must have thought how the magical transformation act of David & Dania was initially conceived and how was it developed into the highly successful spectacular it is today. You will find many of the answers to these questions when John Pye holds a conversation with them and they reveal how it all came about. This is a unique opportunity to discover the thoughts of two of the world's greatest exponents of the art of rapid costume change. Close-up/Stand-up: Tyler Wilson from Alberta Canada is another stand-up/close-up comedy magician and known as a bit of a joker. His card work is clever, creative and entertaining. He is famed for his table hopping and performing for corporate clients and is held in high esteem by the likes of David Acer and Joshua Jay. Finger Flickers will be learning a lot from Tyler Wilson. Close-up: Henry Mayol's magic is simple, effective and completely unique to him. He is the complete professional working with French elegance, humour and poetry. In his close-up work he uses mainly coins varying his routines from what is standard. For instance he does coins through a thick book instead of a table. From his newly opened magic shop in Paris he sells we are told some of the best fake coins in the business. The Jeffery Atkins Memorial Lecture: This prestigious lecture is being given by John Styles MBE.   Don't expect John to demonstrate any tricks. He will not be telling you how to do a 'top change' or to make an elephant vanish but what you will get is a further insight into the life of one of this country's most gifted entertainers. John's experience in the world of entertainment extends beyond the usual run of children's parties, variety and cabaret engagements. It may be forgotten that he has worked on feature films for Stephen Spielberg, Danny Boyle, Michael Winner, Robert Zemeckis, Tom Stoppard and Roman Polanski as well as advising and performing in numerous television programmes for both children and adults. He has also entertained passengers on many of the world's luxury cruise liners and has spent a record 22 years as the close-up magician in a fashionable restaurant in London's West End. It has been his honour to privately entertain members of the Royal Family and dozens of celebrities. So reminisce with John as he travels down memory lane talking about some of his intriguing and varied experiences I.B.M.
